Your tutorials are perfection. So clear, so well paced, explained in a way that is very easy to understand. I really appreciate your style of teaching.
Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much !!!! wow I made my first pockets with your tutorial and they came out beautiful in my garment, a shirt dress for the fall of 2021 . .4 yrs since you posted this tutorial. Amazing !!!!! YOur explanations, your videos all is on point to follow instructions
Thank you for the step by step tutorial. I kept pausing the video - step by step - to follow your magic. I had a hard time wrapping my brain around it before I found you. You made it easy. I added a colorful pocket to a black wool jacket but added a couple of inches of the black wool to the edge of the pocket going on the side seam. I wanted to avoid a pop of color peeking out. It worked very well. I am definitely subscribing as you certainly know your stuff.
Brilliant video!!! You explain everything so clearly with such detail!!! Im going to give this a try in the pants I’m making!!! You are an amazing inspiration to crafters around the globe!! May your tribe increase!!!
Thank you so much for this excellent clear and concise tutorial. I've just finished a three-quarter length coat, in which I would of liked to of had inseam pockets but as I had never done them before, I put patch pockets on instead and although they do look lovely, I am just about to start making a full length version of the pattern in some gorgeous woollen tweed and will definitely be putting inseam pockets in it, thanks to you sharing your skills. I'm so glad to of found your RUclips channel. Thanks a million
Thank you! Oh my goodness thank you! I am about to start an "easy" pattern with in seam pockets and some of the wording and even photos were confusing me. THIS helped it all make sense!
Very clear and helpful! Especially the part about finishing seams before putting it together. I got into trouble there on my first seam pocket project. Thank you!
Thank you so much, I was following the (sparse) directions on an independent pattern and got in a mess! Your fantastic clear instructions allowed me to successfully insert the pockets. ❤️
This was brilliant thank you. Instructions in patterns not always well explained or lack of them. Thank you very much. Have subscribed to see your other videos. 👍
Thanks for providing this video. There aren’t a lot of tutorials explaining how to sew in seam pockets using an overlocker/serger. I like your method is it looks a bit “safer” than trying to manoeuvre the serger around the outer edge of the material with pockets already attached to main garment. I guess the only issue with this method is that as each fabric edge is serged separately do you end up with two layers of serger stitching sitting on top of each other?. Does this potentially create some extra bulk in the seams? If so, would you recommend a smaller 3 thread stitch?
I’m glad you liked the video 😊 It’s definitely much easier to edge finish everything first to save any accidents with the cutting knife when overlocking. You could definitely use a 3 thread narrow stitch to cut down on the bulk.
@@ImGinaMarie they may be attached from the waistband but the opening for the pocket will be lower down the side seam. The ones I show in this video attach to the side seam only but many PJ, skirt and trouser patterns join the top of the pocket to the waistband. There’s no definite rule, just depends on preference.
@@HouseofMissSew Thank you I just don't want to screw them up even though they are PJ's!! LOL Have a wonderful holiday and be safe!! You have been very kind to answer so quickly and completely! New subscriber for sure!!
@@ImGinaMarie you’re welcome! I often find that when the pockets are attached at the waistband it can add extra bulk but depends on the thickness of the fabric and also how your waistband is formed. If you’re planning to fold over the top edge to create a casing/elasticated waistband it’s best to add the pockets only at the sides. If you’re attaching a separate casing/ waistband you can choose to either extend the pocket piece to the waist, or not.
I will eventually add the patterns to my website and also provide a download link in the video description. In the meantime, I can email you a copy if you contact me at julia@houseofmisssew.com
If the pocket is still there and there's enough of the pocket bag left after the alteration to make it worthwhile, start by reinforcing the stitching above and below what will become the pocket opening (go back and forth over the existing stitches at the top and the bottom of the pocket on the side seam). Once this is complete you should be able to open the stitches across the pocket opening without the rest of the seam coming undone.
Jody Breland you would need to cut a pattern for the pocket pieces - use your hand as a guide for size and the pattern shape on the video as reference. Then attach these to the side seams of the skirt about 6cm down from the top edge of the garment.

Thank you so much for this great video!! I am about to make some DIY pajamas, how far down from the waist should you start a pocket?
They should be close to your hips. Hold up the pattern to yourself and decide where you’d want the pocket opening to be, and then measure. 😊
@@HouseofMissSew ok I have been under the impression that pockets are attached along the waistband thank you

Lovely work, thank you.
Would you not serge the seam above and below the pockets?
I’m not sure I understand. I serged all the edges of the pocket and the side seams before attaching the pockets.
Thank you for posting this clear video

Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial! Is there a way to get your pattern pdf so I can practice?
Thank you for such lovely feedback 😊
I don't have a digital copy of the file... it's something I'm working on at the moment though. - sorry!
Beautifully executed and so simple to follow. Is it possible to download the pattern of the sample for practising?
Elaine Rennie thank you! If you email me at juliahincks@hotmail.com I can send you a PDF pattern x😊✂️

You're most welcome ☺️
Thank you! I'd read the instructions about twenty times and still couldn't figure out how to do it!

this is a very helpful video! but how would I add this to a skirt?
Jody Breland you would need to cut a pattern for the pocket pieces - use your hand as a guide for size and the pattern shape on the video as reference. Then attach these to the side seams of the skirt about 6cm down from the top edge of the garment.
Merci beaucoup madame
thank you
It looks good don't get me wrong but the pattern looks way to small because you can't even get your hand in the pocket
You’re right, it is small... or I’ve got really big hands! It’s a sample to test the technique so the size isn’t really important. 😊
Where are these pattern pieces?
I give them to the students on my courses. They represent those that you would get in a commercial pattern. They aren't available online.
