It would be really cool if this could have a career similar to the doctor career. Except instead of treating physical symptoms, at the end you had to treat the psychological/emotional symptoms.
Yeah, I'm working on a more in depth career mod, that allows for non linear progression and actual strategy gameplay, as opposed to ' do these few actions 47 times and you'll get promoted' But it's a ton of work, and hitting a lot of roadblocks with EA's codebase. I'm working on politics specifically, but I think therapy would be an interesting one as well. You could be really bad at it, low skill, etc., and end up causing your client to have negative traits, or the reverse, and your client replaces their negative traits with positive ones. The core game mechanics actually lend really well to that idea.
Thaaaank you! I've been trying to learn how to mod for months now, but never could find any decent tutorials, and everything just made my brain hurt. Trying to learn how to mod is like trying to learn Latin. I finally have a little bit of a grip on Zerbu's Mod Constructor, and it STILL makes my brain hurt sometimes lol
I've watched your videos for a few years now and never have I subscribed to your channel. I subscribed today because of your notes in the video about you having a life. HILARIOUS! Loved it. Felt like I really knew you. Is that weird?
This was immensely helpful. I just started looking into modding when I saw how simple it could be. Who knew just changing a couple numbers in a file could completely alter the game? I have about 537 things I need to tweak in the game. My biggest gripe is that there is too much busywork. I play at a more meta level. I like to guide the overall course of my sims's life rather than fuss with every minute detail of their day. But the game isn't designed for that style of gameplay. I want to build a winery. But I don't want to have to plant, weed, water, spray, and evolve fifty grape vines every day while also trying to keep mites off the bees, honing my nectar-making skill, raising a family, and maintaining some form of social life. Ranch hands, gardeners, and utilibots are all marginally effective. Little tweaks might help, like making bees cover more area or skipping animations.
WOAH! I never imagined you may be able to do a video on this. The Title brought me straight here. Carl, are you a Genie? :-) I was watching a Bunch of "Mod" videos last night (for the first time, I have used CC since sims 1+ mods since sims 2 + I support a very special modder "King" WW). Very Timely topic! Okay I'm gonna watch now (lol).
I was so happy to see this because A. of course I was looking for how to mod because I have ideas all the time of things I'd like that no one has a mod for or no one is updating an old mod for and thought *maybe* it's something I can learn to do. B. Because the idle thing has been driving me nuts, so I was just grinning all the way through this tutorial going OH! that can go away now! Thank you twice over!
Thanks for this video! Watching your mod development on Patreon has sparked my interest in learning to fix things in Sims, too, and this was the first resource that Google popped up for me! 😊
I must be dumb because I have literally no idea what you're talking about but congrats on doing such a great job in helping others and kudos to you bc this is really complicated I'm just an incredibly slow learner.
I might try this to remove the animation a spell caster has in CAS. That drives in insane! I’m happy to see it once, but 20 or many more times, depending how thorough I’m being in CAS, is really bloody irritating. I wouldn’t mind so much if it didn’t prevent me seeing the change I just made quite often!
I know this is an older comment, but there is a mod that stops all sim movement in CAS (except for the trait movements), I can share it if you want it.
I have a couple of great mod ideas but I don't know a thing about coding in this game. Lol. Like, I would love a mod where you can confess to other people that you're a vampire, and they'll either be okay with it or run away from you screaming.
Great. This video is helpful for newbies) I have an idea for a mod that will make emotions like enraged, mortified, hysterical etc more dangerous (by increasing the chance of death).
I think I saw a mod like that already, but I don't want to discourage you. On the other hand my Sims die of hysteria all the time, I wouldn't want to increase that 🤣
Thank you so much for creating this Carl! You said this could be done using just the Sims4 studio. Is there any chance you could make a tutorial with how to use that for these types of mods?
Watches sim get aroused from eating a ham and cheese sandwich. Turns to the waitress "I'll have what she's having". Wow, just realized this video was from 3 weeks ago. 🤷
I have no modding skills but im wanting to learn. Im really interested in making one that does a voice over for mood changes and needs changes to incorpoate commands for the game player. I have played sims a longtime and now have 2 children with autism and id like to have a voice over to set reminders of what needs they need to met in the game.
Great video, Modding is really anything that works that modifies the current experience. Super stoked that XML is used a lot since I'm accustom to C , XML, some JSON, JAVA, and pound my head into my desk dealing with Python. Lucky me if the core Language is Python for the Sims .. Kept looking at the expansion and stuff and seems like there aint much I like at all. SO I'm off on my journey to learn what the SIMs take to create content probably going to focus on new items and clothes.
Time. I'm learning in my free time here and there, but it's a lot to pick up. I'm not sure which direction I want to go with it. I have ideas, but some of those are bigger than I'm capable of right now. For now, fixing little gripes helps me to learn :)

The XML extractor doesn't work for me, i keep getting a "FullBuild package contains no binary tuning" warning, then i get an "unable to decompress compression type0000" error and then it crashes.
Thanks Bruno. I just fixed it. Someone else mentioned that scumbumbo had reportedly died months back, and I didn't know that at the time. scumbumbo made tools that let a lot of other modders make great mods, so it's really sad to hear. Like a lot of online names it rolls right off the tongue but I got it on the first take, just no idea if I pronounced it right.
I get a error when I try using the extractor that says "Warning: The FullBuild Package for SP29 contains no binary tuning." And when I click OK it brings up another SP# and it continues until it asks me to close because of it acting up. What do I do? I matched your settings....?
Is there a place/method to learn more about the actual codes in the .xml files? Like for example, how did you know that you had to edit or 0, or how do you know means distraction, and that you need a higher/lower number to achieve the actual changes? I have great ideas, but I can look at the code till my eyes liquefy, - without someone actually pointing out these basics: oh, you have to remove an interaction from the super_affordances! - that is rather wishful thinking. I do guesswork, and I enjoy it, but if there is a handbook lying around, I would willingly dig in.
Hey,I know Im a year late.. but did you ever find anything tutorial or otherwise that might help with this line of thinking?? This was my exact takeaway and only real "?huh?" after watching this
I also hate these animations and it cancels out all of the tasks I’ve set for them and by the fifth time I’ve asked them to do it (and they decide to stand in place for absolutely no reason) they decide that they want to go do whatever they want to do. I have more “commands not listened to” than “commands listened to” it was over 200 on the not listened too side
Yeah, truly. :( I hadn't seen. I had hopped into the extractor area to grab a link, but just went to have a look. Geez, just mentioned 3 days ago. With scumbumbo being inactive for some time, I don't think we'd get better proof than that with the nature of online identities.
hey! I understand your busy, however can you do a fresher like with the mod your working on now? I want to add a new feature myself, something with jewelry.
Thank you so much for this! I know it's been a long time since this was posted but say I wanted to do one on trait idles.. So multiple different ones, Can I group them together and is that more complicated?
I like the animations but when the Sim needs to care his or her baby they should do it right after teleporting them there, they should care about the baby and not be happy singing or somethin... I find this mod helpfull, and its more realistic but on the other side I like to see the thinking bubbles what the sims have on her/his heads, which helps me out to know what they feel and want, not just the wishes and the moodlets but also the thinking bubbles helps to know what they need. So a mod about controlling other NPCs or other sim characters would be really nice, bcs I want to hire a babysitter that lives in the same household and works there, for when my sims are working, and when they come home she could go to her home and not being homeless. Because she's homeless rn and idk what happened to her. Its also sad that the lifes of the other households go on while I play another Sim carachter that i created, because I wish i could play every household to the end and win every aspirations and goals in the game. I know a bit of xml bcs I learned html and xml and phyton I never saw but maybe its like c# or c++ where my head burns bcs its too complicated for my little brain, so starting off with xml or Sims Studio might be a good start, I already installed the Sims 4 Studio and TSR Workshop but idk how they work, Im a noob at this but I really wish I could do mods and cc (if its legal for EA, idk how it is), so that if its legal I wish I could do that and publish for people to enhance the game and make it feel more realistic. Thanks for your video I really like your videos, your voice makes me feel comfortable and your a nice person I appreciate every video you upload and enjoy your tutorials. Thanks
I wasn’t sure how to make a mod since I want to make a mod that makes sims die of sadness like how sims can die from embarrassment, anger and hysteria but I guess it’s more simple than I think it is
I wanna use this to stop ghost from breaking every single stuff in my house, but I have 0 idea on which string I can change, since they're not the same as this video example. (Maybe I'm just too noob for this...)
does anyone have any advice on adding a singing override? i made an ariana grande sim and i want to replace the in game singing options with mp3s of ariana singing in real life so it's more realistic. people have overrides for almost anything, the in game dancing, in game tv shows, in game phone, etc. so im pretty sure this is possible, i just dont know how if i can use the method in this video or if i would need to do it through python.
Some things I would love to change about sims 4: -if you could play as pets as well like in Sims 3 Pets -if you could go to school with your sims -change the height of your sims
luumia has a really nice height slider mod, if you're still looking. he also made a bunch of other extra sliders for cas, like face asymmetry, ear height, neck length, hip curve, finger thickness, etc. pretty sure he has a patreon where that stuff is available for free
I'm annoyed that we got rock climbing in snowy escape but there's only two places to rock climb and it's super slow. I never found a mod for a rock wall and I don't want to pay for fitness stuff just for something that's technically already in my game...hopefully one day I can make/find one

The mod you made is a lifesaver 😍
You. Are. A. Legend. Thank you for making a video like this, this will do nothing but good things for the modding communities.
Cool I been looking on how to make an occult mod this gives me an idea on how now but still need to look for more info nice vid btw.
Did you ever get around to making that occult mod?
Thank you for the video I'm going to try and make my own mods for sims 4 may take me little awhile to learn but I will get there
Thanks Carl! Once again you have produced an insightful video on the Sims 4 experience. This has helped me a lot.
@@Ollie_nel pleasae please please pleassseee
I have a couple of great mod ideas but I don't know a thing about coding in this game. Lol. Like, I would love a mod where you can confess to other people that you're a vampire, and they'll either be okay with it or run away from you screaming.
Great. This video is helpful for newbies)
I have an idea for a mod that will make emotions like enraged, mortified, hysterical etc more dangerous (by increasing the chance of death).
The idle animations drive me MAAAAAAAAAD!
Watches sim get aroused from eating a ham and cheese sandwich. Turns to the waitress "I'll have what she's having".
Wow, just realized this video was from 3 weeks ago. 🤷
Well, I'm here 4 months later...
I'm here 4 years later
Thank you for doing this. The last update broke my mods and the template I used has been down. Now I can fix it myself. 🤔
10:02 omg yaaaaaas! It's such a simple yet useful mod!
Thank you sooo much for this! Would like to see more of your tutorials, easy to follow and you do everything step by step.
Thanks Carl! this demystified so much for me!!!
I have no modding skills but im wanting to learn. Im really interested in making one that does a voice over for mood changes and needs changes to incorpoate commands for the game player. I have played sims a longtime and now have 2 children with autism and id like to have a voice over to set reminders of what needs they need to met in the game.
This is extremely sweet of you, you’re a wonderful parent for being considerate
Great video, Modding is really anything that works that modifies the current experience. Super stoked that XML is used a lot since I'm accustom to C , XML, some JSON, JAVA, and pound my head into my desk dealing with Python. Lucky me if the core Language is Python for the Sims .. Kept looking at the expansion and stuff and seems like there aint much I like at all. SO I'm off on my journey to learn what the SIMs take to create content probably going to focus on new items and clothes.
Nice one. I'll definitly give this a try.
Why don't you do more modding?
Time. I'm learning in my free time here and there, but it's a lot to pick up. I'm not sure which direction I want to go with it. I have ideas, but some of those are bigger than I'm capable of right now. For now, fixing little gripes helps me to learn :)
@@CarlsSimGuides Your guides are the most detailed, reliable, and well-arranged I've found out there.
@@ruksharalam173 Agree! I've watched my fair share of modding videos and I didn't have to rewind Carl's video even ONCE.
@@beanana5281 Who do you watch? I have experience coding(I'm an information technology major) and I would love to start learning to Mod The Sims 4.
@@t_sizzler_2032 I've honestly just been searching through yotube and watched a lot of videos to be honest. Most of them are the same but it's not at all the same quality as Carl's. I'd recommend watching other videos by accounts who have a large amount of followers since they usually have more content about the subject. Good luck and I hope you'll make mods in the future for me to download! :D
i want to make a mod thats able to send child/teen sims away to summer camp @ granite falls. i wanted to make cabins with bunk beds and just make it super fun and have it full of other campers. i just have absolutely no idea how to go about it 😭 seems way to hard. hopefully someone will make it though
I know this isn't perfect, but you can put all the children you want into one household (with one older sim as a counselor) and send them to granite falls. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it might work
"Anyone who knows Python doesn't need my help!"
I'm a programmer with experience in multiple languages yet game modding is something completely foreign to me.... so here I am looking up how to do the most basic things lol
Oh my god This is actually game changing
Pun not intended? ;P
heh, badum tss
The XML extractor doesn't work for me, i keep getting a "FullBuild package contains no binary tuning" warning, then i get an "unable to decompress compression type0000" error and then it crashes.
Carl saying "Scumbumbo" is so funny!
btw the link to ModTheSims has an ALL at the end of the URL that gives a 404 error.
I love you, Carl! You’re so relatable.
Very amazing thank you thank you
Lmao I wanna make my own mods but , I don’t think my brain could ever survive the confusing mess of moding
I get a error when I try using the extractor that says "Warning: The FullBuild Package for SP29 contains no binary tuning." And when I click OK it brings up another SP# and it continues until it asks me to close because of it acting up. What do I do? I matched your settings....?
same error
Same error. When I continue to run, 16 hours into it, nothing seems to be happening.
Thank you, I have been looking for something like this.
Is there a place/method to learn more about the actual codes in the .xml files? Like for example, how did you know that you had to edit or
0, or how do you know means distraction, and that you need a higher/lower number to achieve the actual changes?
I have great ideas, but I can look at the code till my eyes liquefy, - without someone actually pointing out these basics: oh, you have to remove an interaction from the super_affordances! - that is rather wishful thinking. I do guesswork, and I enjoy it, but if there is a handbook lying around, I would willingly dig in.
Hey,I know Im a year late.. but did you ever find anything tutorial or otherwise that might help with this line of thinking?? This was my exact takeaway and only real "?huh?" after watching this
This is awesome! Thank you
I must be dumb, but how did you index the Sims XML...I tried looking with no luck...not sure where to find the XML data
could you do a video on existing mods out there that make the sims 4 a better life simulator? as my grapes about the game match your thoughts
This is so so so helpful. Thank you.
please another video about how to add interaction
I also hate these animations and it cancels out all of the tasks I’ve set for them and by the fifth time I’ve asked them to do it (and they decide to stand in place for absolutely no reason) they decide that they want to go do whatever they want to do. I have more “commands not listened to” than “commands listened to” it was over 200 on the not listened too side
Thank you so much for the tutorial!!
that ham and cheese sammich tho
Hi Carl, not sure if you saw but on that Scumbumbo mod thread he has been reported as passed away. Very sad day for all of us.
Yeah, truly. :( I hadn't seen. I had hopped into the extractor area to grab a link, but just went to have a look. Geez, just mentioned 3 days ago. With scumbumbo being inactive for some time, I don't think we'd get better proof than that with the nature of online identities.
It's on the last page of comments for XML injector here modthesims.info/download.php?t=622928&c=1&goto=newpost
hey! I understand your busy, however can you do a fresher like with the mod your working on now? I want to add a new feature myself, something with jewelry.
I love this video. Thakn you for doing it
All my interest in creating MODs was gone by 3:23 😂 I’ll just enjoy whatever mods you guys create
Ik this video is suuuuppper old. But I want to make a mod and I would love to have your guidance!!
thank you!!
Great info, but all goes over my head, i don't think i have the patience for doing this
2:07
I know python and can very much confirm I need your help
lol ikr? Knowing a programming language doesn't mean you know how a particular developer has implemented that programming language.
This was a great introduction to modding, but I fear the thing I want to mod (adding careers) is too complicated.
Andre, High King of the Summer Sea practice makes perfect
Thank you! Those idle animations also ruin everything when you want to make a movie with sims 4 sims!
Thank you so much for this! I know it's been a long time since this was posted but say I wanted to do one on trait idles.. So multiple different ones, Can I group them together and is that more complicated?
Hi, thanks a lot for this tutorial. Um, a dumb question but what is the minimum or recommended laptop spec to be able to make our own mod?
You are awesome!
Thanks
Thank you SO much!
Thx!
I will use it thanks 🤧
Thank you! I need to get rid of that terrible pregnancy walk. The mods I’ve tried aren’t actually removing it.
you absolute angel
Some things I would love to change about sims 4:
-if you could play as pets as well like in Sims 3 Pets
-if you could go to school with your sims
-change the height of your sims
They have a height slider mod on modthesims I believe
luumia has a really nice height slider mod, if you're still looking. he also made a bunch of other extra sliders for cas, like face asymmetry, ear height, neck length, hip curve, finger thickness, etc. pretty sure he has a patreon where that stuff is available for free
I really want to make more events... more random outcomes much like Rimworld... where you pick how much chaos comes into your life...
I'm stuck again on Browse Everyone is skipping steps, not being clear or our PC's are different. The path to nothing comes up like that. :/
A good video 👍
I'm annoyed that we got rock climbing in snowy escape but there's only two places to rock climb and it's super slow. I never found a mod for a rock wall and I don't want to pay for fitness stuff just for something that's technically already in my game...hopefully one day I can make/find one
that sim must be saying "there might be oysters in this sandwich because now I want to woohoo"
