  • Modern quantum physics, and quantum field theory in particular, are unimaginable without the concept of virtual particles. In today's video, we will try to understand what they are, how they differ from real particles, and to what extent they are real themselves.

My student son drew me here: all I can say is bravo!! You have created a presentation that gives the practical with the theoretical in a splendid mix. Reminds me of my tolerant QFT prof from when I was his age.

Excellent video. It really lifted some of the mystery of VPs. Though I’ve no doubt it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Virtual particles only exist because of the limitations of our measurement tools and/or our lack of understanding limits our ability to understand. Using the concept of virtual particles, IMO, hampers us from having a better understanding. For example, the concept of dark energy and dark matter. They cause people to think of them in terms of something tangible, but they are most likely just something we don't understand or have wrong. But thinking of them as "something" makes us (researchers) think about it in a different way and that different way hinders us from finding the right way. Another example is gravity. We think of it as a force, but Einstein clearly showed it isn't a force. Yet researchers are still looking for gravitons. This shows that because gravity is still expressed as a force through equations, they end up THINKING of it as a force. Virtual particles end up being the same thing and researchers need to stop using this form of visualization, because it harms future research/discoveries.

Virtual particles and real particles occur on two sides of an event horizon of a BH, called black hole complementarity, when a virtual particle enters a BH and lowers its energy and while a real particle is released.

Am I to think after watching this video that virtual particles are a mathematical conveince that help to explain experimentally observed phenonena? Are they a way of maintaining the cohernce of present theory until better overarching theories come along. I will put these questions to Claude AI.

Good grief! A real physicist does care about whether virtual particles are real or not.
Real progress comes from penetrating contradictions.
Like: the lamb shift and the casimir effect which both permanently extract energy from the virtual domain ( or vacuum energy).
This permanent energy extraction is a gross contradiction of the time energy uncertainty principle. Ie the time energy uncertainty principle is wrong . In particular it is wrong in the application to virtual particles existentiality- which is a modelling overreach beyond measurement uncertainty.
Unfortunately you are just repeating the bad science propagated by others.
We are missing 96% of the universe in the form of an invisible charge neutral particle that influences curvature. Virtual particles are modelled as invisible charge neutral particles.
    Its practically on a plate.....
The pions carry most of the mass in the universe yet they are said to be virtual. Their energy is thus also permanently non-zero. Modelling them as violently fluctuating in and out of existence is testament to how logically bankrupt physicists are prepared to be to prop up the belief over logic.
