Not mentioned, but should be, is the Stoner 63 modular weapon system machine gun/automatic assault rifle chambered in 5.56 mm. It saw limited use by the Special Forces and Navy Seals and they loved its firepower. It was designed by Eugene Stoner and manufactured by the Cadillac Gage Corp.

I was a Marine in Vietnam in 1968. Trained as an 0311( rifleman) and 0341 (81 mm motorman) prior to being sent to Nam...never used the mortar training but did use the M-16 rifle..which produced a double fed on my first ambush.. another time needed to use a m-72 law ...it failed to fire. Although.... My machete worked flawlessly 😅😅😅

The main reason the M16 was shipped without cleaning kits was: the ammunition first being used by American soldiers was stick powder. At the time, stick powder burned cleaner meaning the rifle didn’t need to be cleaned as often. That all changed when President Nixon’s cabinet got involved. They discovered ball powder was cheaper to produce than stick powder. So they decided to change to ball powder just to save money, but never to the soldiers in the about the change. Causing jamming while in battle. Which in turn caused more casualties.

I have 2 Remington 870s & 1 Remington 1100. I absolutely love them! You forgot that they were also used by the Tunnel Rats. The amount of care that the 870s needed was miniscule to the M-16. Whenever we were out on patrol & we came to an RP or whatever, I had my men clean & swab their 16s as well as me doing mine. The 16 doesn’t need much cleaning, just enough to clear out the gunk in the firing mechanism. And.... "can you see the light?" "I see the light!"

My Bat commander had a Stoner 63 in Nam. My first year in the Army was in 93. He had it hanging in his office. The trigger and receiver had lots of damage on it. A certificate was next to the Stoner 63. It was for a silver star. A b40 rocket killed the guy in front of my Bat commander in Nam. Part of the b40 rocket hit his stoner. It saved his life..

But it's most effective when the guy holding it is a marksman and not a near spray and prey grunt. IMHO the only real world in use advantage the m16 had was lower weight. But I'd still rather have m14

It didn't have such a high rate of fire, the German MG-42 far exeeded it,with the supply problems that came along with it, so the real ravenous pig was the MG- 42 chewing through 8mm Mauser! It was sensible to give the M- 60 a lower cyclic rate, the Germans opted for the high cyclic rate because they knew they were going to face a vastly numerically superior enemy esp on the Ostfront, their machine pistol MP- 40 had a substantially slower cyclic rate 500-550 rpm than the ppsh used by the Soviets, 900rpm, but the individual soldier was less burdened with ammo carry.Everything is always a trade off sometimes a high cyclic rate was advantageous and sometimes not so much!

XM177 Commando is another example for the war, and the prototype of the iconic M4 Carbine series. That said, the jamming with this weapon is worse than the M16, to the point where you had to take two cartridge out of the weapon, especially with the 30 round mag. That said, the XM177E2 Commando was a much improvement over the original E1.

Those of smaller stature often traded their heavy battle rifles for the M1/M2 carbine. This started in WW2, especially in the jungles of the South Pacific islands. The M2 is not very controllable in full auto because of it's very light weight. The GI 30 round magazines were also prone to jamming in semi-auto fire as I have seen in my own GI M1 Carbine.

In basic and advance training, there were a number of weapons I was trained on, including a bazooka, as well as various explosives, such as C4. In Vietnam, due to my assignment, I only had a. 45, but later discovered a grease gun in a small attic space over my bunk bed. I used to go out shooting practice with a couple of CIA guys who trained and were responsible for a small contingency of montagnards, who were an elite, for a lack of another word, elimination team.
Occasionally, I would fly as a gunner on a chopper with a. 50 cal machine gun, into LZs, as well as a midnight rescue into Cambodia. Unfortunately, as I came back from an R&R, I learned that a Special Forces colleague of mine and his interpreter were ambushed and were killed on a road I used to travel quite often alone. After that, a .45 was insufficient, so I packed a couple of frags with me all the time. Returning to the States I will agree that we weren't all that welcomed, especially in uniform and changing planes to get back to Bragg. Most of us were drafted, not necessarily interested in being in the military, nor going to war.

The truth to the Vietnam War that was never fully told. United States had No intention of winning the Vietnam War from the very beginning. Fear it might become like the Korean War with mass continuing Communist Chinese troops from China pouring against American military force in Vietnam. And the threat of a thermal nuclear War with the Soviet Union. The Vietnam War started during the Civil Rights movement and racial tension between whites and blacks all across America. Several members in the US government were segregationist and they had their eyes dumping their Blacks problem on Vietnam with the chaos that was happening in Vietnam at that time between Communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam. At that time, the South Vietnamese had 250,000 troops and North Vietnamese had 60,000 troops and the DMZ line had already been establish at the 17th parallel. Many Vietnamese peoples from both North and South did Not support going to War and killing each other over the idea of Communist. Even though several North and South Vietnamese leaders believe Vietnam should Not be divided and try to distrupt one another. But they couldn't rally enough support among the Vietnamese peoples in Vietnam to support going to War. Until Nov. 2, 1963 When JF Kennedy and LB Johnson order his CIA to stage a military coup assasination on a catholic South Vietnamese President, Ngô Đình Diệm and his young brother Ngô Đình Nhu. This give America the power to do what ever they want to Vietnam and to the Vietnamese peoples. And they appointed an ex-Vietminh soldiers for Ho Chi Minh, Nguyễn Văn Thiệu as their puppet South Vietnamese President. The South Vietnamese President who cause the lives of 500,000 South Vietnamese troops killed or capture by the North Vietnamese army and their communist allies The Pathet Lao army, and the Communist Khmer Rouge army of Cambodia when he order them to be station and patrol in Kampuchea. And who told Nguyễn Văn Thiệu to do so? The United States, fear more Americans troops will be killed in Kampuchea. 20 days after the military coup assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngô Đình Diệm and his young brother Ngô Đình Nhu. US President JF Kennedy was assasinated in Dallas, TX on Nov 22, 1963 and LB Johnson was sworn in as the 36th US President. On Aug 10, 1964, US President LB Johnson declare US military action to Vietnam over an alleged attack on a US destroyer, Maddox that was on patrol past the 17th parallel near Hanoi, the capital of North Vietnam. While supporting the South Vietnam. 500,000 US ground troops was sent to fight in Vietnam. 40% of those US troops that were sent to fight in Vietnam were adult blacks male along with high school drop out white male, non-college white male, trouble teen white male, and white convict male were all sent to fight in Vietnam. And when these US troops arrive in Vietnam and they did their "Search and Destroyed mission." The Communist North Vietnam gain mass support for their cause and their army grew from 60,000 troops to over 1,000,000 troops. In 1975, the Democrats control congress cuts off funds to all US promise military aids to South Vietnam causing the Fall of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975. Thus began a mass flow of Vietnamese refugee fleeing out of Vietnam. 10 of thousands of Vietnamese refugee died at sea from hunger, thirst, illness, Thai pirates, and Chinese warships. Today over 100's of thousands young South Vietnamese childrens are born of birth defect from the US toxic biological chemical, Agent Orange which the US military spray all over rivers and forest of South Vietnam. 3,000,000 innocent Vietnamese civilians of women, childrens, and old peoples had to die in their country during the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War is the worse United States War Crime in history. From Truman, JF Kennedy and LB Johnson were all were WWI and WWII veteran who sent the next young American men to become killers. Why I post this is because for years I'm tired Americans use Vietnam War as a Propaganda War story. Telling peoples that they there to help South Vietnam fight against communist North Vietnam. When America is the root cause for starting the Vietnam War and the Fall of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam

@@boondocker7964 it was simple and easy to use but much too vulnerable for some situations. Add that the usefulness went down over the last decade of use and we had to switch. The Panzerfaust replaced it as the Spike replaced the Carl Gustav. Just a matter of becoming obsolete. And with the draft being suspended we needed more versatile weapons that could cost more. For bunker busting they would still be useful but armour is too thick for it.

We still use the M72 LAW, be it in modernised form, in the Finnish Defence Forces. In basic traing, every conscript is taught how to use the weapon. I had the opportunity to fire a life one at a T-26 at a range. Unfortunately, the rocket didn't fly true. It struck an embankment, a metre or so beneath the tank.

Let’s also remember that the US only entered the conflict because France’s colonization of Vietnam wasn’t going well… Sure, the cover story was something about “communism and a children’s toy”, but it was purely about economic considerations (probably closer to economic exploitation if we’re still being honest). Those facts take nothing away from the service people who served, my displeasure sits entirely with the government. Funny how that’s not at all how it was represented to the public, nor does it resemble what I was taught in history class…

Was that actually an M60 Rambo was firing in the end of the Rambo: First Blood 2? I know it looks very much like it but I thought there was a similar gun that was almost identical to the m60 that was also fromthe Vietnam era and mounted on Hueys sometimes. Possibly a Mag58?
