Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

If a guy ever sings this with me, they better be prepared to marry me too.
I had this song on my wedding day..x
The casting for Raoul was fantastic
They're all so good-looking. I feel like a potato
This is the best love triangle to ever exist. I mean, it's not just a love triangle; there is so much symbolism that the guys represent. The Phantom is darkness and being stuck in on place. Raoul is the light and he's freedom.
This orchestra arrangement is heartbreakingly beautiful, I want to play this piece so badly.
poor heartbroken Phantom :(
*completely un-related side note, but I find it kind of funny that Christine and Raoul are having this mad make-out session and are then like "oh, hold on babe, just gotta bust out this high A real quick"
This for me is the vocally strongest song in the movie as Patrick Wilson's voice is divine and Emmy has had training.
Growing up is realizing that I can no longer sing along with this...
if i could sing like emmy rossum, my life would be complete
Great depth to this story. Even though the phantom is a murderer you can t help but feel sorry for him. You can relate to all the characters, actually. So human...so tragic
Raoul's voice is so rich and warm, Christine's voice is just beautiful! :)
But my heart just breaks for the Phantom... >
I'm 13 too. Yet one has to be logical. Christine couldn't love him, because she feared him too much. Not just by his face, but the fact that he killed people and was overly possessive.
My personal interpretation is less a symbol between Lust and Love; I like to think Raoul and Erik stand as a the difference between Love and Obsession. While I understand why my fellow females swoon over the Phantom, I see his actions more out of an absolute obsession over Christine rather than love for her. Despite what those romantic movies tell you, being obsessed with someone is not attractive; it's scary, as Christine can testify.
But- I- and he... I'M THE PHANTOM!
Putting aside the fact that the musical motion picture completely changed the point of the story into a romance, I will say that I enjoyed this movie very much. And I want to say that I love the phantom as a character, BUT if we are going to look at this in a realistic way I would not have chosen him either if i were her. He's crazy enough to lock me in a cellar if he doesn't get his way, he kills innocent people, builds shrines to me, is more than twice my age and prone to killing himself.
That moment when Christine kisses Raoul and the Phantom turned around because he wouldn't want to see the love of his life kiss someone else. :(
Just because I like the phantom's character and wish he had a better ending, doesn't mean I can't acknowledge that this is a fantastic song :)
YOU'LL CURSE THE DAY YOUDID NOT DOOOOO ALLLL THAT THE PHANTOM ASKED OF YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
Yes, thank you! As much as I love Erik's character (he's certainly fascinating), people don't seem to realize that there was no "choice" for Christine in the original story. She was all for Raoul the entire time while trying to fend off Erik. She only kept going to his lair because she had hoped to calm down his feelings a little so he would leave her alone. :/
Finally others on Raoul's side! I was beginning to think I was the only one
The most romantic and beautiful song in the play and movie
Holy crapola, I love this song. A lot. It makes me sad because I don't think that people sing to each other out of nowhere to describe their feelings for each other anymore. :'( I'd be overwhelmed with happiness if someone sang this to me. :-)
I'm on Raul's side too, I love this song so big
Can't believe the phantom is Gerald Butler and it's actually him singing! wow that man has some lungs on him!
the moment she dropped the rose, my heart broke
3:30- I wish someone would twirl me like that!
And this is one of the best musicals ever!!
My heart breaks every time I see the Phantom cry
"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something." ~ Wesley, The Princess Bride
The story of the phantom isn't one of a woman choosing beauty and youth over a poor deform guy. It's about a monster of a man, who forgets his own humanity in search of a woman that could never love him.
i can understand his need to control. it comes from his past in controlling the opera through the previous owner & his painful childhood. He's a genius, all the plays that played at the opera are written by him & they're a hit. He's hideous & longs for affection. When he found someone that he loves only to find that she's in love with someone else, it enrages him & think of the best method to own her.
I know what does.
I agree, the fact that he let her go shows it was love; in the end.
Before that he demanded she leave the man SHE loved. A show of love is just the want for that person to be happy. If he loved her before that final scene, he wouldn't have stalked and kidnapped her.
We sang this in Choir.
My heart cried
EXACTLY! In the book she loves Raoul and Raoul only. The Phantom is an interesting character yes, but he's also a murderer, psychopath, stalker, and in my opinion, a bit of a pervert. Now I'll sit back and watch how many people disagree with/hate me for saying that. ;D
I wish I could sing like Emmy and I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
omg!!! Raule is so ADORABLE!!!!!
I say that Christine is a lucky lady! For anyone to say words like this to someone is only a dream to me. I want!
I can't watch this without everyone in my house telling me to shut up--I make weird walrus noises because it's so sad.... Poor phantom... But then Raoul and Christine... And... fdsjaklfsajfl;sa ... I just... I don't even know anymore.... bdshajkfd
One of the best love stories of all time.
Plus that song they sing together makes anyone fall in love LOL! So pretty
I cried...
Love this musical!! Such beautiful music and the acting is wonderful!! Always makes me cry!!
This song is always stuck in my mind!!! Even if I don't hear it for a whole year!
LOL! That's true. Plus, Raoul's voice (Patricks's) is just perfect!
Best love song EVER. Period.
i can't even handle this movie its too perfect
She ran off with him because she loved him, not Erik. Sure, she may have felt sorry for Erik, but pity does not equal love. Plus, she was /terrified/ of Erik; he murdered innocent men, kidnapped her, stalked her, pretended to be her deceased father. I'm as much of an Erik lover as the next person, but Raoul was definitely the better choice for Christine.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, I just get worked up when there's Raoul hate despite the fact that he didn't even do anything.
This song is the GREATEST song in the world
Love Emmy roseu!! This version is so much better.
Raoul was the better choice. One day when some of you grow up (that wasn't meant in a rude way) and look at the situation from a different light, you will see why.
and her hair is perfect throughout the movie!
This is my favorite song in the entire movie!!!!
That's the most perfect music ever!
PERFECT!!!
Everyone says "I love the Phantom" or "I love Raoul!" If I were Christine, I would have left both of them behind. Raoul pressures her into trapping the Phantom and the Phantom tries to kill her fiancee. In the scene when the Phantom tries to strangle Raoul I would have walked away and told them they could have each other.
Now that is an amazing proposal!! But can't help feeling sorry for the Phantom ;/
also he sort of pretended to be the ghost of her father which makes it quite creepy
I never get tired of this movie... and most especially THIS song! Thumbs up!!! :')
I like him too! You are not alone!!! I understand Erik, I just think that ultimately, she picked who was right for her. She had to be true to her feelings, if she hadn't been, then it wouldn't have been fair to Erik or herself.
i have seen this play 6 times ---god willing ill see it 6 more more times before i die
I wish I could sing like her!!!!! So amazing!!!!!
Love this song. Perfect and wonderful!!
...this is so beautiful it gives me chills!
exactly i super agree with u, and i love that christine still smartly choose raoul that just follow her heart randomly :)
I sympathize with the Phantom most, and feel that I would have chosen him. Because he only ever wanted to be loved. In a world where he was treated so cruelly, he only wanted one person to be loved. And he wanted something he couldn't have. Beauty. But he also wanted an equal. Christine was an equal in that she was so gifted musically. But she was also highly beautiful, and beauty is something the Phantom always dreamed of.
i agree. this could not have been better cast. my fav movie of all time!
Beautiful
tears me to bits to see how much this kills the phantom
I completely agree and that's the beauty of the story
That song is really best one that I have listened to ever !!! Bravo !!!!
This is my favorite movie!!!
I can't watch this without crying
39 Phantoms out there, i feel your pain people.
I've watched this movie bare times, and every-time i watched it, i loved it :)
Such a heart-breaking song!
How is it a betrayal though? He taught her: that doesn't entitle him to her life or her love. Is every singer required to fall in love with his or her tutor?
Aw, people, leave them alone. They're an adorable couple!
The problem is, the Phantom needs someone who can smack him upside the head when he's being an eejit. Christine is not that person and shouldn't be forced to be that person.
The Phantom's face when Christine and Raoul kissed just KILLED MEEEEE!!!!!! :'(
the most beautiful love song ever
I love te Phantom. I know he might have been misunderstood, he loved her....But he was cruel. BUT I LOVE RAOUL AND THE PHANTOM!
THIS IS THE BEST OF THE BEST
I think that's why it's such a memorable and powerful story
This is such a beautiful song! IT is probably my favorite one out of the entire musical! I have seen Love Never Dies, and I am probably going to get flamed for this..but I am glad Christine chose Raul. Sorry Phantom fans, but I wish that Meg and Erik (phantom) had gotten together.
My favourite song in the movie!
Gyönyörű szerelem!
Szegény Fantom mit élhetett át!!!! Együtt érzek vele!
i always hear people say this and i dont understand how they could think like that. Its the choice between a handsome rich life long friend, or a murdering psychopath.... how is that a hard decision?
Sang first part of song with Raoul in it as solo at school choir concert got best singer award
Did some one just mention gerard butler, now theres 1 handsome man, then that would b about right he is scottish after all. x
From the outside, it's easy to say that you'd choose the phantom. However, in my own life, I was recently confronted myself with a choice between a childhood sweetheart and a guy who would do ANYTHING for me... and I chose the childhood sweetheart. I realized that I might say I'd choose the Phantom, but if more history was given to Raoul as a character and we saw what led up to their falling in love... I may have thought differently. Until you're in her shoes, you can't judge.
Awesome song!!!!
i honestly feel sorry for the phantom. every time i watch this musical, i keep wishing the ending would somehow change. it's just too sad how he never got the one thing he desired. plus the fact that everybody hates him. stories like this bother me for days after watching.
O_o this is the first time i've ever seen so many Raoul fans gathered in one place.... I can't stay here! *runs*
I love this movie...
I feel bad for the Phantom. All he wants is love. :)
I lobe his song and I love singing it! Me my friend and another girl were singing songs on your way to a vollyball game and I started singing this song and both my friend and the other girl said I sang this song beautifully!
Emmy y u sing like an angel?!?!?!? It makes me jealous.
i can see how it would be very difficult to choose between those two! wow..
I'd really would like to have a guy to hold me and to guide me.. :( Rarely get any hugs...
Sang Raoul's first part of song as a solo, got Top Singer Award at Highschool.
