Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

When the phantom cries: We all cry. We know we do.
You see, this movie requires looking at it from both sides. I find Erik's story one of the most tragic I've seen. He was abused, mocked, scorned, and treated like a monster as a child solely because of his face. He loved Christine. I don't doubt that, but he let that sorrow channel into emotions of malice toward everyone (and even murder). He let his past turn him into exactly what everyone had called him, a monster. In the end, though, he realized what it meant to love, and let Christine go.
This is the point where The Phantom really snaps in the movie. Until now, he was unstable, but after this, he's increasingly more agressive in his dealings. He felt he was betrayed, he loves Christine. He was rejected by his own mother and left/sold to the circus. And in the scene where he first takes Christine to his lair, she acts in a way that may have led him to believe that she had at least some feelings for him. That was his ray of hope, of redemption. And then she crushes that hope.
Beautiful and crushing part is when you can hear Christine and Raoul singing togethet at the same time, symbolizing their love, the new union they arw entering into, while the Phantom is alone hearing it as well, knowing she does not love him. Wonderful movie and Broadway show.
Man those last lines are so chilling. "You will curse the day you did not do, all that the Phantom asked of you." I just get these chills that let me know how much pain and love he had for her.
i wish that we could randomly start singing with background music in real life
Nothing is wrong, nothing is wrong at all....*sobs in the corner*
Did anyone else notice phantom's brilliante memory. When Phantom tied Raoul at the end of the movie he said: " Order your fine horses now" like Christine in this part.
There is nothing worse then loving someone who doesn't love you back. I love this movie so much, Gerard puts so much emotion into the character.
1:33 - 2:04
Pain! at it's finest;
When he crushes the rose, you know shit is about to get real.
When your crush rejects you...
this is so sad, crying right now. My Grandmother recently past away and she really really loved the phantom of the opera! every time i'll hear the songs i'll remember her! Rest in peace my beautiful and beloved grandmother.
Did anyone else cry? I felt SO bad for him! He's so sweet to her not really that much to others, but considering what he went through, he could have come out much worse.
it is so sad to see him cry because all he wants is love but people judge him so much, he deserves love. ( he also needs to learn not to be violent )
I almost cried at this scene. That look on his face, the sound of his face, how he must have felt, so betrayed . . . it just killed me. Second movie ever to bring me to tears.
i still can't believe how good of a singer gerard butler is
What really kills me about The Phantom is that the only thing he wanted was to be loved, truly loved for once in his life. He had experienced nothing but hatred and pity and then he found Christine, after teaching her to sing he fell in love. But because he had never experienced it before he didn't know how to react. It's kind of like a child, he doesn't know what else to do so he becomes violent in order to get what he wants. But he never meant ill, he just didn't know better.
We all know that Christine had already fallen in love with Raoul a long time ago. But when she brought him to the balcony, started singing with him, with the Phantom listening, his heart slowly being shattered into a zillion pieces, and then Christine dropping the rose he gave to her... I was crying when he went to pick up the rose. How could she not know how easily the Phantom's heart could be broken... Sure, she gave him her mind blindly, but he gave her his heart blindly. She broke it.
"You will curse the day you did not do, all that the Phantom asked of you!"
Damn right she will!
When the Phantom runs to the statue and starts singing. I thought right there like:
"Brb singing about my feelings"
Freaking beautiful how it zooms out as he sings that last note.
Found a dried rose from a project I did forever ago and took a cue from the Phantom. I found a mask, turned this song on, and went with it. And you know, pretending you're the Phantom in this part.. it really gets you in the feels.
I've never been more jealous of a rose before in my life...
The drama is in the voice!!!!! The soul!!!! Those hands!!!!
Aw I want to give him a hug now.
I cry every time I see this... Those who does not cry or pitty him, don't have a heart...
Christine wasn't too naive. If you read the book it gives more insight into how Christine feels. She did love him, but as a teacher and nothing more. The phantom (granted he doesn't necessarily know HOW to love someone) kidnaps her twice. He holds her hostage in his lair for a fort night and kidnaps her again after her performance. Threatens to kill everyone in the opera house and the man she loves and has loved since childhood. All the phantom has known is blood and darkness.
I love the ending of this song, the way the phantom leaps onto the statue is fantastic! Marvelous! An all around good song & movie!
the phantom is BESTTTT
many times I have felt like the phantom....sitting and crying, listening and feeling other peoples happiness.....Phantom I love you!!
I feel like a phantom too sometimes :/
*Sniff* I just wanted love!
I began to cry when Erik picked up the rose
I just want to hug him
This part really made me break down and cry. It's such an emotional song.
You are forgetting that Raoul was Christine's childhood sweetheart, so he does not come out of nowhere he's loved her for a very long time, longer than Phantom in fact
This has got to be the saddest story ever.....*tear rolls down cheek*
i can't be the only one that always cries at this part
This is so beautiful,if I was Christine I would have chose Phantom absolutely!
btw gerard butler is amazing i cried untill i can barely breath seeing this scene and the final scene T^T so much pain in the expression n voice i just.....just..........T^T
it kills me to hear him singing so broken while crying :( i would've picked erik (the phantom)
Just seeing him cry makes me wanna hug him!
I always cry on this part no matter how hard I try not too..
I don't think she was materialistic, she was far more "normal" than people like to interpret it. Phantom made an illusion of who she was for himself, not necessarily the truth. I think she did love Phantom but I see how she also loved Raoul. I am more of the intuitive, spontaneous, wild, creative person but I married the very opposite. And I really love my husband the most precisely for the qualities I lack.
I have hatred for neither Erik nor Raoul. both are justified I their love for Christine and hatred of each other. Raoul had been friends/ in love w/ Christine since childhood. Plus, he didn't even believe the Phantom existed until several minutes ago in the movie. Erik had taught Christine how to sing well, and had loved her for quite some time. Who could blame him? She's beautiful. The Phantom hates Raoul because he's the one Christine favors.
I cried when I saw this part in the movie. The Phantom just wanted someone to love and care for him, and what does Christine do? She turns his love away and goes with Raoul. I think that the Phantom should have gotten Christine.
I LOVE this movie. & this is my favorite song, favorite orchestra verse, just favorite everything(:
I love how phantom loves her, so passionate!!!!!!!
It's not an opera,it's a musical.
This is definitely my favorite part of the movie.
Raoul didn't fell in Christine when she started to sing. They were in love when they were teens. They have known eachother ever since they were children.
But yeah, I love the phantom as well! Butler is my dreamhusband 3
This song gives me the chills. Every time.
I was on his side the whole time.
this part makes me cry both in the movie and watching it on stage :( who wouldn't want the phantom?
*SIGH* that last note. chills.
Well I can't blame phantom for being clingy like he is I mean he was abuse in a circus and he got no love so...yeah...I would be a little more considerate for him
My favorite song that Phantom sings ♥
he meant everything he had to offer. He taught her to sing, yes. but he also made her unforgetable. he offered her a home, waqs there for her when she was child after her dad died. he did a lot for her.
I feel so touched,I've cried a million times for phantom !
so dark, it's beautiful.
he was bound to love you, when he heard you sing! and its all because of the phantom, that Christine can sing that good! this is how it feels, to be betrayed by the one whom you love, where you put so much effort on someone you love, and in the end gone to waste.
I just love the phantoms voice it's amazing ♥
when he started sobbing i started crying too. :(
Actually, Christine and Raoul loved each other even before the Phantom knew about Christine.
I personally believe the reason Christine chose Raul mainly because they've been childhood sweethearts. Deep down, Christine cared for the Phantom, but he was beyond dangerous. He was willing to kill for her, literally. She had a fear that kept her romance for him a bay.
He may have had seduced her later on before, but Christine knows the Phantom has lost much of his mind, murdering anyone for her affection, which in it's own way pushed her father back.
This song is very interesting. It reminds me of Heaven's Light/Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It shows the differences between love and lust.
i cry so hard when i watch this part...
I really want to give the Phantom a hug.
I saw both the musical with Ramin, and Sierra and the movie, I would still choose The Phantom, in my opinion he loved Christine as much if not more than Raoul. Then again I am of the opinion that sometimes... sometimes monsters need love too. Raoul will always be The Fop to me.
In the book, The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (or something like that), the Phantom was so much scarier. He was like everywhere at once and always watching over the Opera House. It always used to make me shiver.
It's true that all the murders and the mental behavior was very distorted but I I think the whole point of the novel was for the Phantom to be a depiction of everything we hate in ourselves that we just wish for someone to love. That's why it is supposed to be a tragic love story - it seems that Christine loved Erik but she wasn't able to look past the Phantom in him. Erik didn't want her pity, he wanted her love for all the flaws he had which she couldn't give him. That's why he let her go.
that's the power of media my friend. it has the ability to make the antagonist look like the protagonist. in the end we subconsciously feel like wanting to be like the antagonist.
I wish I could sing like Emmy :( and omg I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
thats the whole point !--tough choice--which makes this the greatest music ever!
true but he also disguised himself, letting her believe that it was her father that taught her to sing. That meant that she did not know him at all, he was essentially a stranger, yet he pretended that she would give herself to him. But on the other hand I don't think he knew any better
2:08 was sooooo powerful!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
He's so beautiful when he starts tearing up ;u;
this never fails to make me cry :/
2:06 to 2:48 - Sums the rest of the movie up well. This is a very good film. I own it on DVD.
We watched this movie in English because we were learning how opera effected ppl back then and what it stands for. I knew what the movie so i was singing to it and we got to the end and i was crying and my class and my teacher where staring at me like i was crazy and then i explained the movie to them, still crying, and they still didn't understand so i had to go home because i couldn't calm down. THAT MOVIE IS SO EMOTIONAL!!
While I can certainly see what you mean, and to an extent I agree with it, can you 100% call it love that the Phantom really feels though? It's more just obsession I'd say. As someone who's clearly had a crap time of it, he's latched onto this one idealised view of Christine and sees her as this beautiful angel and she occupies his every waking thought. He worships her, but not in anything close to a healthy way, he wants to "possess" her- to me that doesn't really say love, more stalker :P
I feel so bad for the Phantom. The Phantom would've done anything for her and that's how she repays him.
He is an amazing talent...sings, dances, acts...putting all the shallowness regarding his looks aside...he is a talent actor and I enjoy watching his work.
My favourite scene! his voice is amazing here.
the first time i saw this movie i thought he was gonna jump off the balcony and i was all no don't jump who needs Christine you can have me!!!!!!
most heartbreaking scene ever..and yet it is also my favorite
I'm like..only twelve, and I love this...and yea...I always cry at this part ;;
I like to sing his angry end part, the power and anguish of it really speaks to me not to mention I love hitting those notes XD
FINALLY! SOMEONE ELSE FEELS THIS WAY!
Makes me sad, like the phantom, i'm always second choice or not at all
I always cry at this point. I can find Christine daft for choosing Raoul over the Phantom. The Phantom gave her EVERYTHING, including himself. Seeing him cry makes me cry even harder :(
I saw this movie 5 years ago and it is still the best movie i've ever seen. Even though i havn't seen it more than once just because i dont want to destroy the most beautiful piece of movie memory i have.
pain despair anger----awesum!
LOVE THIS MOVIE AND SONG! ♥
Oh my God.. it made me cry.. the scene was so deep and it made me cry.. Oh my God!! :(
omg when he sang "christine i looooooooooove youuuu"... heart... melted...
FINALLY! THE LAST 2 NOTES! NO ONE HAS THEM! BUT YOU DO! THANK YOU! IT WAS DRIVING ME INSANE! I KNOW ITS ONLY 2 NOTES, BUT STILL!
I think if she had told him not to kill anyone else, he wouldn't have. After a life of solitude, your grip on right and wrong begins to fade away - all that matters is what YOU want. That's how people survived long ago, after all.
Bravo Bravo thank you for exactly uploading what I wanted.
But Raoul and Christine were childhood friends! Even though I love the Phantom, I think if I were Christine I would have married Raoul too.
Best scene ever
