- Emergency service for the deli, fresh meat, dairy and beer cases were all running warm on the refrigeration rack at the grocery store. I need to find out why they are warm and get them back to temperature as quickly as possible. This was a big job that took all day. The recorded video was 2.5 hours long originally, this is just a 28 minute breakdown of what it took to repair the rack.

Going all-in. First finding a very difficult leak, then fighting against leak after leak, after leak... Disassembling not pleasing blocks of old coils. Till the end of the day. Man, this is one of the BEST videos figthing leaks I've seen so far. Congrats Rick, GOOD JOB 👏My respects.
Thanks so much for the kind words, it was a long day
@@HVACRSurvival I know it.
@HVACR Survival, why not replace those coils? The next day, it will leak from the other side
@@Olc... my best guess would be cost and availability, they are likely 30+yrs old.
Just one of those calls where you feel defeated even though you got to the finish line. Refrigeration adversity at it's finest. Good job man.
Thanks Sean! 🤜🤛👍👍
That’s crazy that’s one of my biggiest turn offs so far.
Doing everything I think it might be, but not getting the results.
I’ma year 1.5 in. Fresh meat. Im constantly being told it’s part of the job. But eventually I’ll get better.
Boy I hope so theirs something about refrigeration that is so attrative 😂
Damn this was a remarkable job.
I’m new HVAC newbie here and seeing all this is amazing.
Wish I had someone like you to apprentice under so I could learn all I can. Doing trial by fire on my own as of now. Learning all I can when I’m home too.
I am learning these racks as well, that's why I know what to explain in more detail, because I might have just figured it out minutes prior 😲😁😁
All I can say is to watch the RUclips videos. You want the ones like this one, and HVACR Videos (Chris), because they'll leave in the mistakes as well as the 'This is how it's done".
Wow , that was a great find, 100 lb. Of ferrion!!!?? It probably cost 10k for ferrion, and at least 5k labor, i enjoyed watching your expertise and techniques of fixing things.
✌
Thank you!
time for a new sensor on ole ticky. bad/contaminated sensor/bad wiring = bad sensing. all the newer stuff is far worse, mush of them you bump the head slightly and the detection sensitivity can change by 90+% and be miles off. we're back to needing proper testing and maintenance of test equipment, everyone takes it for granted now.
I'm waiting on my test vial for the stratus, I used the calibration gas on the H10, that sensor has less than a few hours of use on it and it's never been hit with a hard hit of gas.
What you know, your tenacity, and your practical skills leave one nearly speechless. But i had to try and write something. Then on top of it all, including the exhaustion, you edit and post a video so we can all learn. Hats off to you.
Thank you very much Jay! Yes, there’s a lot of time spent and editing phase. People on average don’t watch more than 50 to 60% of a video no matter how long it is.
Thirty years ago there was a full time refrigeration mechanic working for the supermarket. Then it was cheaper to lay them off and fix on fail . Now it’s don’t replace the unit -we spent the set aside money.
I like how thorough you are and dedicated to creating a master piece with every repair. We need more guys like you in the field who sign their names to each job and stand by their work. Nicely done!
I try my best even when I don’t want to. Thanks brother for noticing!
NICE work on a system that is WAY PAST its serviceable life!
Best regards from an Expat in Phuket!
Many thanks!
Omg every time I watch a rack repair I get reminded why I'll never do rack systems. Fix one leak then you find another. How long did the repair take? Good video!
All day to fully complete
As a hvacr tech in Sweden, the closest to the unit you worked at, we had the kryotherm, it was a complete unit with several independent circuits, heat reclaim/ventilation, whole unit was placed indoors.
This multiple circuit with common suction and liquid distributor you worked at can partly be compared to the modern co2 system, but there's a modern computerized management, two suction lines (one low and one med. temp) and one liquid line going all over the store to the cold storages and display counters.
Anyway. That was a well done repair! 👍
It's always awesome to hear from my overseas viewers🙌. This was one of the oldest control systems this grocery has have left, it's getting replaced hopefully this year with a new Emerson controller.
Damn thats a nice torch both sides ^^
Looks like I need to pick up a stratus have seen too much good from it!
Now I’m going to start practicing with that torch tip, I got the fork tip in a little combo kit just always had it laying in the bag never messed around with it. 🤘🏻
Awesome
That is a very old store and even older building so I'm not surprised they had refrigeration issues especially since they only like to do the very minimum repairs. I also wouldn't be surprised if some of that equipment has been there longer than the store has.
Yeah when they get new stuff it's usually something old from another store 🤣
Finding Leaks Sucks been doing this over 30 years .. Nasty jobs Great video people have no clue the work we do. I see you cut your finger. True today the units junk. Good job buddy
Thanks Eric, yep, I got a slight cut on the finger, I didn't notice till the blood was seen, I barely feel it anymore. Thanks brother🤜🤛
i really respect the way you went all-in with that major leak , you did everything to make it run again and took the time to re-check and found more leaks and repair them ! Great job 😃
Thank you!, I was dragging butt but by end. 😩
Head up mate you did an amazing job given your circumstances
Thanks brother’
Excellent job man! As a supermarket tech I love seeing these supermarket calls you got. Especially that old rack with the gang clocks in it 😂
Thanks Andrew, much appreciated 👍👍
Stratus for the win. I still greatly appreciate you taking the time to chat with me when i was asking for your opinion on leak detectors. Based on your input i bought the Stratus and you were 100% correct.....it is the top of the heap and its already paid for itself with leak detection.
Awesome, we charge $5 for every leak search that we do in addition to the hourly rate.
soap bubbles for the win.
Fixed up a few of those older ones but have replaced many newer case coils. The new stuff is so thin it just can't hold up. Sad really. The new coils in the deli cases can barely make it 5 years. Nice work and enjoy your videos.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate the views🤜🤛👍👍
You are a true pro champ! Without a doubt some of the best trouble shooting I have watched... I appreciate the effort you put into making the video aswell I know it was difficult to do the job at hand on top of filming. Thanks I would be interested in a longer version as well.. thanks again
I have been using a large wooden handle wire brush, but that dog brush looks like it is much better. Thanks
10:17 judging by the noise coming from that door which is very obvious they dont have it maintained and considering lubricating a door is simple and relatively inexpensive comparied to refrigeration work. This place probably dosnt do routine maint but only calls when the SHTF.
You would be correcting your assessment.
I don’t think the blue monster bubbles freeze near as easily as the brand you’re using. The blue monster also doesn’t foam all up when you spray it. Just started using this a couple of months ago, and seems like a superior product.
Rick those pre made flares are handy, I love how thick the seat is on them. Good work
Love my stratus! Best leak detector I’ve ever owned, and that includes the ancient h10. I sure like that little tip you have , I’ve been turbo torch my whole career, that’s all
Any one uses here. 😊
That was some repair! Wow!
🙏🤜🤛👍👍
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Rick, just when I think you're licked.... you come deep in just vast toold bag of knowledge and show them who's boss. That tip is amazing. Oxy is the way to go. Man i really enjoyed this video. Thanx for sharing. Oh and editing, where the magic happens, is spot on. Go home and tell your lady. Maybe you get one of them sammiches again.😂
😂😂😂👍👍👍 thank you sir!
That H10 will run circles around that other leak detector. Try changing your sensor on the H10
I changed the sensor every year and never pegged it with strong hits. It’s just not as fast and the battery doesn’t lasts as long as my stratus. Sure it’s better at R22 by a little bit but that’s not worth it
Hell yeah! The Stratus is Killin it. Great job Rick
I used to work in the grocery store, and did take care of the basic stuff on the racks. But man.. the cases are dirty! That wouldn't fly at our store when i worked there.
It's in need of a remodel.
You made it again😊Not the most pleasurable to work on such cabinets.
Over the years I always had some oil on the flares to make the surfaces to grip better.
Seems like the stress on them was avoided and the tension got better.
As a young guy, I made many flares on brake tubes that alway was made as double.
The flare thickness was more solid and better working than on refrigeration systems.
I used the nylog on the flare, that's the same as refrigeration oil. I'll be replacing the flare the next time I run into this.
Great job Rick, I think your torch tips are great. You saved the day again.
Excellent job Rick.
Great job Rick, you were firing on all cylinders on this one. Clear to see, a veteran in Big-fridge stuff!
🙏🤜🤛👍👍
This stuff is huge that you work on man I wouldn’t know where to begin, I work residential HVAC! Kudos man!
Thanks for checking it out!
Dang I might have to get a Stratus. I do have the Accutrak however, and I try to use it frequently to no avail. It definitely works, but with small residential leaks in evap coils I have a really hard time hearing leaks. I tend to only find larger leaks with it, which is still very useful. EDIT: Dude, you must be one of the few techs out there that will actually repair stuff like this on that scale. Most companies won't even allow you the time to do that and will just tell them to quote a new coil or what have you. Being that diligent and thorough is kind of a curse, because you get all the shitty jobs. Keep your head up, you make a big impact.
Thanks man! Where are you going to get a coil thats 30 plus years old? Even if you did it will be weeks or months before it comes.
Well done brother , I wish the evap coils was that thick now, the new coils are will not stay as long as this one great job 👊🏻
Thanks Doug🤜🤛👍👍
Got to love the Stratus. My old H 10 that I was so proud of her for the last 40+ years is feeling abandonment issues and neglect.. she was left for a younger thinner sexier model.
That happens to the best of them🙂👍👍
Anybody remember what a halide torch is that's what we used to find leaks in grocery stores back a long long long time ago before the H 10 and other electronic detectors and cordless tools. Installed and serviced all the major grocery store chains. Loved getting them after hours emergency service calls on new store's that other companies installed and started ending up chasing moisture in system and dirty T XV inlet screen s,leaks and oil pressure switch tripping due to the quality of work or knowledge of how the rack systems worked. Loved doing air-conditioning and refrigeration for 40 years and seeing all the different types of systems and technology and I enjoy the videos and appreciate and respect you for the dedication and knowledge that is needed to do commercial refrigeration and you have to be on call and go whenever they call most have a 2 hour response time and technician on call always had a backup tech for the busy times in extreme temperatures and the backup tech even had a backup tech you have to be able and willing to work long hours and always be ready to go
Well done Rick! Thanks for putting in the time and effort in making this video.
Thanks for watching them👍👍
Heck of a good job Rick 👍. The Inficon people couldn't do a better promotion !
That Stratus i really wish I could get it , but it's too expensive for little ol' me .
Well executed Rick. I saw the frustration lol believe me I’ve had plenty like it too.
Excellent work and video 👍👍👍
Nice work and endurance, Rick. When you mentioned you were having trouble on a low-temp circuit on another rack, my first thought was maybe it had mechanical sub-cooling that was being fed from the rack you had the leak on. Just a thought. Keep up the good work vids....👏
I'm not sure why I had problems on the low temp rack that day, I didn't do anything to it and it started working and has been for two weeks now🤷🤦🏻😂😂. Thanks for the support! 🤜🤛👍👍
You are the first person I see using that brazing tip good 👍
I was a little afraid it might get too hot but it was controllable.
Man I got into the trade 2 years ago, work in light refrigeration the biggest systems we install and service are those RDT systems. This is like a whole other trade lol. How do you even get into racks like this?
I'm learning as I go, asking questions, researching other RUclipsrs that do it everyday and looking at my book refrigeration for AC technicians. I've been doing this since 1995 helps
Great vid man. I would have stopped recording half way thru the job. What a shit spot of a leak tho 😂
There are times I stop because it's a shit show I don't want to remember 😂👍👍
love all your videos. The rack videos are my fav. thanks keep it up rick!
That was another tough one Mr. Rick. Needle in a hay stack kind of stuff. Great Job. Thanks for taking the time to pass it on. I hope your day is healthy and happy..😊
Today is more restful as long as I don't get called out. Today is my last day on call this week🙂👍👍
I actually shut off tiktok to watch your videos Rick- very much awesome bueno
🥰🤜🤛👍👍🤣
Never been introduced to supermarket setup. Thanks for the intro and education. Great Job
I really enjoy learning the racks and controls because it's more limited to how many people get to work on them.
@@HVACRSurvival completely understand that. Same with the soft serve game. 1000 Hvac techs, 200 refrigeration techs, 3 soft serve techs. Specialties for the win
“Mouth breather of the group” 🤦♂️. As always, great and hilarious content!
That's the kinda job that separates the men from the boys. Cool torch tips.👍👍
I still use teflon tape and leaklock for those old flares.great work.not a fan of nylog
Good find and great repair! You definitely do a thorough job! I got turned on to the Nu Calgon fluorescent leak detector because it’s freezing point is 2°, Big Blue is 27°, I work in a lot of freezers so I definitely like the lower freezing point lol. Also, I really like how you use different tips for different applications, I need to get the one you used to braze the distributor tubes and elbows, nice work!
I linked it in the description area. They have a whole set of tiny tips and the rosebud.
There is a Big Blu sub zero as well. Rated for really low temps
@@jasonjohnsonHVAC thanks for the heads up! I didn’t know that!
@@HVACRSurvival yeah, I’ve see all kinds of tips on Amazon and true tech, I just picked up a Cap’n Hook that does up to 3” copper, sucker eats some gas though lol
Great job Rick!
Always interesting to see and learn on different systems I don’t normally see. 👍
I would love to see the unedited video and count all the swear words! 😂😂
Fantastic job Rick!
I'm surprised you did this on your own. The company you work for must be thrilled having you on the payroll lol That's a 1 journeyman job and apprentice on the side for help
🤣👍👍 Generally service doesn't get a lot of Tommy two pockets just to stand around. But if I wanted someone I could have scheduled a helper but I'm not big on helpers unless they're learning.
@@HVACRSurvival You will last longer in this business with a helper.
Great work Rick, those new teflon washers work great, they're coming out on the new units, love that leak detector whats the brand of the soap bubbles LOL.
Big Blu by Refrigeration Technologies. They also make a subzero version which is useful for freezers and it won't turn to slush in your van in the winter.
You can have the supermarket refrigeration repairs. I'll stick to refrigeration repairs at Wendys. Way easier, but still stressful at times. 😂
😂😂 Wendy's is horrible, it's right there with Arby's. Both have greasy, nasty equipment, more so than most. Not too mention they are working over top of you dropping stuff 😂
@HVACRSurvival Yes, Wendys is very very greasy!! I do hot and cold equipment and that grease destroys everything! I refuse to work on some stuff because it's full of grease and a potential fire hazard. The employees working on top on you is so true too, because the kitchens are so small. That's why I hate doing inside work during lunch hours, like hot equipment or reach in coolers because they be in the way, especially the bigger people. 😂
the refrigerant levels sensors are likely contaminated and very wrong reading/skewed miles off. or controller even reading wrong. probably best to make sure nothing is in defrost and everything on that system "warm boxes", then fill it by sight glass/receiver level and pray. 🤣
Nice! You sounded beat up there at the end.
I was. I was about finished at 400 left at 600
Great job Rick.
True HVACR survival. U are the man.
Fantastic and informative video and the fenix PD35 flash light is a fantastic that you recommended don’t leave home without it EDC
I love it too! They have so many neat lights. 👍👍
@@HVACRSurvival thanks for the great videos and knowledge
That looked like a challenging job nicely done!
It was👍👍
Awesome skills Rick!! Appreciate you making these video's
Always a good watch! Great job as always 😊
excellent!
You mentioned your dad built M1 tanks. Did he by chance work at the tank plant in Lima?
Correct 👍
Holy moly!!!! What Oxy tip is that???!?!?!??
It's in the description
Kinda reminds me of the HEB in Waxahachie
This episode is really good. I really enjoy it
Thank you, I spent all day yesterday trying to condense it to what you seen today, it was over 2 and 1/2 hours and actually took me a total of probably 11 hours to do the job
@@HVACRSurvival
Great fix
Nice work Rick
Great little job and vid ... Thx for posting ...
Nice job pal. Quality work as always
🤜🤛👍👍
Great video Rick thanks!
LOL, “I hope you enjoyed the video more than I did making it “
Great Video. Thank you for sharing
At what point do YOU quote a new coil? Is it less hassle to repair it? It’s been my experience that if you do repairs on a coil you own it and every little thing that happens they want for free.
Where are you going to get a coil it's going to fit that case?
Nice work!
You're the man!
Your too kind🙏
Great video! Showing me some stuff and I appreciate it.
I'm glad to hear it's helping 🤜🤛👍👍
Too much fun awesome job i wosh they would teach rack system in school
It's a lot to learn, I'm still learning...
This is nuts. How long you been doing this
Depends on what segment of the field you're talking about. HVAC started in 95, refrigeration for probably last 15 years. 9 years where I actually do it everyday. Grocery stores probably the last 2 years
You're a Beast. Much respect to you brother
🤜🤛👍👍🙏
Nice work
Wow they need to upgrade defrost to digital. Never seen old school mechanical defrost like that in a grocery store..everything here is cpc, Danfoss etc
Supply chain issues, this one's slated to be switched to an Emerson e2 controller hopefully soon.
@@HVACRSurvival gotcha. We do some big stores and they are starting to go from E2s to E3s. Not a fan of the new upgrades
This one is some real insight into market work. Excellent work, man. How many hours were you able to charge on that one, if you don’t mind my asking? That’s the thing about them markets… It all takes time
It used to trip me out to step outside and warm my detector up, to walk through the slider and it go ape shit 🤣
With drive time I think I had 3.5hr on the first and 10 on the other day. I was about to go ballistic when the detector went off after the repair. 😡😩
@@HVACRSurvival Dude, I know the pain. It became policy (when I worked markets) to perform a walk through leak check of every market after every service, took about an hour to walk through every time. Pain in the ass at times… I mean, we got lots of work out of that policy, but man… I wasn’t always looking for a reason to stay, if you know what I mean 😵💫
Agreed great work
Does that one timing motor run all of those defrost controls?
Although I'm biased, I thought you were being kind of hard on the H-10. Sure, it was slower, but it still got there.
Yes, one motor for all 15 or 16 clocks. I loved the H10 for several years but it always left me wanting more battery life, a more resilient sensor that wouldn't be destroyed from a large refrigerant hit and the ability to reach deep into the unit you're checking with one hand.
Great job as always!
Much appreciated 🙏
Thanks for sharing this 👍
Your welcome!
Great job and great video
Back to the H10
🤣🤦🏻
Good Job 23:32
Thank you very much!
Where do you get the drill bits that clean/sand the pipe?
I linked them in one of the discussions down below you can get them at Lowe's or Amazon
