Have You Ever Wondered How Elephants Walk?

  • Join us in a lesson on elephant walking!
Elephants' unique walking style captivates us for many reasons - the way their large feet carry them for kilometres daily, across harsh landscapes, from winter to summer, how they manage to move relatively quietly for such massive animals, how they in fact walk on their tip toes and not flat footed as it appears...
Watch our video in our elephant behaviour series, Have You Ever Wondered....? And see if you can learn a few insights into the march of the elephants.

Watching the herd walk in the dirt path, hypnotic. Each step looks like a giant plunger pressing into the ground. Large squishy feet. The rhythmic sound of each foot, as it scuffs the surface of the path. Just love the sound. Today, I learned to pay very close attention to how they walk. Fascinating. -Seattle Family 🇺🇸

Such big and heavy body on their toes is always boggling my mind. I remember ballet lessons and that was painful... Too bad my toes were not as well padded as elephants. All participants were perfect but Buby was particularly kind to show us in slow-motion how she walks. Thank you HERD

I am also so very impressed with Fishon and what all he can do and is also determined to do too.🐘❤️😊👍🏻 I think it is also so cool how most of the time when they all are walking together how they usually always walk in a line behind each other. It reminds me of children in a kindergarten class where they all had to walk in a line.🥰😁🐘❤️ I am so pleased at how so wonderfully Fishon is doing and very determined he is to do the things that the others do and more too. He is truly my inspiration for sure and I wish him continued success and hope he never loses that determination.❤️🥰🐘 Sweet Khanysa is in a wonderful herd family because she has a lot of wonderful mentors to continue to learn from. How well can elephants see? My understanding is that creatures like elephants are critical to regrowth of plant life through stimulating growth as the plants are 'pruned' or 'trimmed' if you will. I loved the part of a video showing the dung beetles and the recycling so that no nutrients go to waste.

Its like two people walking in single file when Elephants walk.
The hind legs are timed just a fraction of a second ahead of the front legs.
But the movement as a whole is very casual.
    When they walk fast...
You just double time the casual stride.
I never actually took the time to study the movement.
    Its kind of peculiar.
But if you weigh 10,000 lbs...
    It works.
I bet sauropods walked just like this only a bit slower because of their larger size.
    Thank you Adine.
Its about time we got a little more indepth about Elephants.
