It's hard to imagine how someone 2 months past their 9th birthday could not only song this song, but also arrange the lyrics and music to give honor back to the song's originator, Screamin Jay Hawkins (1956). Yet, it's time to wind back the clocks even more. At 7 years old, Angelina was the last to audition for Norway's Got Talent. The judges saw this tiny girl with her permanent teeth still trying to grow in sporting an Amy Winehouse hairstyle and 2 bare feet step onto the stage to sing from one of her heroes, Billie Holiday. Angelina taught herself to sing beginning at 2 years old and had been asking her parents to be allowed to perform at this venue. So at 7, the finally relented.
Here are her 4 Norway's Got Talent performances. Of these, be sure to use the links provided for NGT 1 and NGT 4 ("Summertime" and "Gloomy Sunday"). The NGT 1 video is of her performing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday. This video has English subtitles on the screen. It has pre- and post-performance content in which Angelina talks about herself (this is the earliest video we have access to that has Angelina speaking about herself). She's so tiny that she twice fails to get into the chair for her interview. I recommend playing this entire first video.
The final performance, NGT 4, has English closed captions that you will need to turn on at your end. This video has a lot more pre- and post-performance content, which are missing in all other RUclips links for this performance. The NGT 4 video begins a lot like an AGT spotlight would, featuring the singer. While she now has 2 permanent teeth, side-by-side, she's still so small that her feet stick straight off the edge of the bench she sits upon. She talks about her experiences on the show and what she's about to show us. This is followed immediately by her singing "Summertime" in the style of Ella Fitzgerald's and Louis Armstrong's rendition. The third segment of NGT 4 contains the judges speaking to Angelina about the effect she has left each of them with. Many of their comments are quite prophetic, and they are called to mind again and again whenever I hear her sing. Two of these judges appear alongside Angelina in several RUclips videos, weeks and months after she won.
The final segment of this NGT video contains the naming of the three highest scoring performer(s), and from there, the naming of the victor. This segment runs almost 5 more minutes. Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. Angelina Jordan creates a genius performance once again of a legendary song. This was the finest recording ever made of a 9-year-old vocalist! Your comments were insightful and much appreciated. Angelina made history here. It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl (9yo in people years, approximately 37yo in artist years!) can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this!
"I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video).
You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). She has a Musical "palette" of vocal techniques unequalled by any current singer and an Instinct as to When and How to use them which is superior to most singers past or present, AND at 17 years old she has room to improve beyond even the greats! Listen to her covers of Rihanna Or Adele and you realize she is the best interpreter of modern songs you've ever heard. Listen to her original songs and you will realize you cannot imagine how good a songwriter she will become. Listen to her catalog of 170+ cover songs and realize that she is Already one of the best Arrangers in the music business!

As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.

Thank you for continuing to discover Angelina. She is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed.
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
(k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

This was AFTER she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent and won it, ages 7/8. She auditioned at age 7 with Billie Holiday's rendition of "Gloomy Sunday." She sealed her place in the competition with an a cappella rendition of Billie Holiday's "I'm a Fool to Want You." Just to show she is more than a Billie Holiday mimic, her first song for public voting was "Bang-Bang," a Sonny & Cher song also sung by Nancy Sinatra. Her finals song (again, public voting) was George Gershwin's "Summertime" sung in the style of Ella Fitzgerald. If you're into the old school sounds, definitely go for those. Be sure you get the Gloomy Sunday audition with the English subtitles, so you can understand what the judges are saying to her during and to each other after the performance. I advise against doing the four in one, because everything is clipped too short. If you don't want to do them all, then do the audition and Summertime. You'll get to see how she evolved over the months of the show. I'm sure the angels below me will have a ton of info for you. I'm glad you explained yourself briefly---it affirmed what I had sensed about you. I think "I'd Rather Go Blind" is a great one to hear AFTER you kind of know who is Angelina Jordan, and you understand that a very casual take on a song with a birthday present mike (12th birthday) is mind-blowing. It is so intense the way she does it, sitting on a couch in Norway. LOL! I see so many reactors not say it: "What is that little white girl in Norway doing with all that soul?" LOL! You would think she's a reincarnation of the greats in plural because you can actually hear a bit of a combination of several classic artists in her vocals like Louis Armstrong in those growls, the improve and blue note like Nina Simone and even those outburst like Screamin' Jay Hawkins. At just 9 leaving an imprint hard to duplicate is brilliant.

Yes she just turned 17 on Jan 10th 2023,, you want to go from extremes watch her MUSIC Video Elvis tribute, "Suspicious Minds" she was 16 on that and then go hear her sing Disco at age 10 singing "I Will Survive" very different that what you will expect from a 10 year old
She recorded this around 2 months after her ninth birthday. Angelina chooses her own songs and does the musical Arrangements on many of them as in this one. You see her making last-minute changes on the music sheet.. the picture on the candle is Screamin Jay Hawkins, the original artist.She makes sad songs her own but stays true to the original artist's version.

This was the first performance of hers I ever heard, thank goodness, so as to get me hooked for good. Talk about a PHENOMENAL first impression, right? Perhaps my favorite from her. But it's difficult to have a favorite with Angelina.
This is kind of what we expected your reaction to be on the first encounter. It's hard for some of us to understand how any song that Angelina does doesn't impress. I think I've seen them all and, for me, there are one or two I don't care for (song choice), one or two I simply can't handle because of the emotional impact, but we are talking about over 130 RUclips videos. I know you will come to see the amazing talent in this young lady as you travel down this very enchanted rabbit hole.

There is a video of her with a mic. At 1- 1/2 years old she started singing at that age as you check out her videos you will come to know this before you go forward with her videos. Check out her cover of I who have nothing at the age of 6 years old it's pretty good at 6. She won Norway's got talent at 7 years old and was on AGT in 2020 at the age of 13 years old you really need to check out that also. Her voice gets better and better and can stand up against any major music star. As you watch her videos her voice sounds and feels like a warm blanket it's incredible. God bless

When I first heard her it was this video. I was shocked. Up until then, I didn’t realize that this was something I never thought possible. It challenged my beliefs about what I thought children could express. Her music touched me in a way that made me see the world with new eyes, more hopeful and open-minded.

I want to let you know one tidbit about Angelina Jordan at a very young age you start singing at one and a half years and I don't know when she started redoing songs to fit her but she always we does a song to fit her style she does a rap song called Bohemian Rhapsody she did that song I think in 2021 on AGT America the she did a very strip-down song on that one but she is capable of taking any song that has a high-backed high-paced song and she'll strip it down to a real slow pace she does that all the time on almost every song she does but she doesn't in our way that plays homage to the song
