- No commentary here, its just me cutting open a silkworm cocoon to show how tough it is (I have to use alot more force then I expected) and to see what it looks like inside (it contains the remains of the silkworm).
This silk cocoon can be bought from the normal school suppliers here in the UK.
Did anyone take science in school? The worm is not dead. It is changing into a moth. It is called a chrysalis. They live about 3 to 10 days after emerging from the cocoon. The cocoons are used cut open like this as a beauty treatment. They can also be used when cut open for hand spinning silk. The worms are boiled alive for the commercial processing of silk since cutting the cocoon results in damaging the single strand of silk that makes the cocoon.
I wonder what other ways that you can use today, to keep them alive before boiling or drying them?To let them become to that beatiful creature and then still be able to profit or put use that precious material. It was interesting when I learned that silk is also used heavily on aircraft manufacturing today for being much tougher but much cheaper material comprared to steel. or the cut open for skin and facial care..
Killing the worm is actually convenient for the grower as he will leave only a portion of the worms destined to complete the transformation into moths in order to reproduce (the minority) so that the population is never increasing.

@@halukbahadr4102 I love your thinking. Eri silk is done just like that. The worms are allowed to complete the process of changing and then the cocoon is used. It’s not the high dollar silk that can be reeled as one strand, but it is very humane and the worms are not harmed. That is the only kind I use.

I have a bunch of silk cocoon "necklaces" still untouched. My grandma's village had a silk industry and she brought some pieces to us when we were kids. I had no idea there were insects inside them. I thought they were cotton.. My life is a lie..

I had one with a dead silkworm inside in my possession once, I kept it for a bit before cutting it open to see it. It's surprising actually how tough the cocoon is.

@@Umactually1323 I know that idiot,It was literally all dried out and would rattle when you shook it, it was in my possession for like 3 years without hatching and was given to me by someone who owned it for even longer. The reason I said it was dead is because I knew for a fact that it was fucking dead.

It has a sorta thing with sticky liquid on its head which turns into silk
And that's how you kill the caterpillar before it can become a moth

Cutting open the silk wont kill it right? You will have to cut open the brown cocoon inside it to kill it.

is this the video of silk cocoon after boiling or before boiling . coz I have heard that the silk would be slimy before boiling it
suhasgowda gowda no it’s more like a glue that’s why it gets boiled to not only kill the silkworm but loosen the threads.
Once the fine threads are loosened they are all pulled through the same metal tube where the sticky stuff clings them together to form a bigger stronger thread!

The cocoon is like a silk housing for the pupa inside, if you're careful when the opening the cocoon you might be able to keep the pupa safe, they don't need the cocoon to hatch. I think the cocoon's only purpose is to keep em' away from sunlight or predators. So it should be fine
Why not wait until the moth emerge naturally. Why cut open the Cocoon before the Moth is ready to emerge?

+Audrey Mcdougle lol ppl raise silkworms for the silk thread. they won't let them fully grown since they will bite the cocoon and fly away (1 cocon gives only 1 silk thread)

To make silk, you have to kill the silkworm inside by boiling the cocoon for five minutes in order to get all the sticky silk stuff out, cuz thats not good to make silk. I bet this guy was trying to get silk thread. You can't just make silk by letting the moth out of the cocoon, because in order for the moth to get out of the cocoon, they have to spit out this chemical that makes a hole in the cocoon. That would make very tiny pieces of thread, not sufficient to sew or embroider with.

Well, even if it became a moth, the lifespan would have only been less than two weeks max! Also, they are easy prey for birds and marsupials because they can't fly as a silk moth! Nature is so unfair for these animals!

1. So the silkworms make a cocoon for themselves like they die?
And 2 if the above is the case and the silk worms die by making a cocoon how do we reproduce ? How are there more and more silk worms? I’m confused
