I have owned a vintage tint FS800 since 2016. Other acoustic guitars have come and gone from my collection because they just don’t get played as much as my FS800. It’s a fantastic little guitar. Yamaha definitely flies under the radar compared to the bigger name brands. Budget friendly top quality instruments for sure!

I purchased a Yamaha FGX5 (Red Series) mid last year after watching a review from Heart Breaker guitars in Las Vegas on your show. At the time I was tossing up whether to buy a Maton or Cole Clark (I live in Australia). Both were not making guitars at the time due to Covid and there were none in stock anywhere. I went with the Yamaha and have no regrets, thanks to your show.

I have two Eastman's, a Ibanez 12 string and a Yamaha FG 441S, 35 years old and it is great! Solid top, ovangol back and sides, very good sound and playability.
The crazy thing is that my Eastman's did cost a thousand euro's, the Yamaha was the same price then but now it is worth nothing, on reverb they do 200 dollar or so, ridicoulos for such a great guitar!

Old guy here ........Grew up in the 60's - 70's when Yamaha were the 'go-to' guitars for most 'folkies' . I recently bought a Yamaha LL16 - - - Amazing Guitar for the money !!! They have top notch solid woods with Yamaha's 'ARE' ( top wood aging system ) .....to my ear they sound almost as good as a Martin D28 and they're built like tanks. ( The bracing though, is pretty stiff and they require at least medium gauge strings

I'm a guitar teacher at a small private music school, and one of my students recently brought in a Yamaha ac3r. I had never seen or played one, and after trying his, I have to say that it's an excellent quality guitar at a very competitive price point. It's obviously a great student instrument, as well as a very good entry level professional one. I'm going to recommend Yamaha to all my students from now on.

    • @mikkeljulius7313

I completely agree! I have a FS5 as well, and these days I want to play it every day. I love the aesthetics of it. From the semigloss to the tuners, the warm mahogany look and the tinted top. I actually like it more than my Martin OM-21 which costs four times as much (I got the FS used but in mint condition). It's so crazy! This guitar can do everything and it feels sturdy and like it can take a punch live. I've recently installed the LR Baggs Anthem SL in the FS5, and it justs sings live! It has become my main guitar and I will not let go of it. If you find one on the market, don't hesitate! I was lucky to find one in Copenhagen for 7.000 danish kroner = 1.100 US dollars. RIDICOLOUS!!! But guitarists here in Denmark can be very conservative. Everyone thinks that if you're a serious musician, you need to play a Martin. Martin, Martin, Martin everywhere. And yes, they ARE amazing guitars as well. Like I said before, I also have an OM-21 which sounds beautiful. But way overpriced compared to what the Red Label Series from Yamaha is capable of. I'm excited to be a Yamaha player!

Nice to see Yamaha get some love. I have a 45 yr old Ovation Model 1612 but wanted to add something with a warmer sound but still able to plug in for gigs. I ended up with the Yamaha A5R A.R.E. (the A5 series is the hand made in Japan series). Absolutely love it - in addition to the sound, the neck taper and the hand-rolled fingerboard make it feel like I've been playing it for years, even tho it's brand new. And the SRT pickup system is wonderful.

Had I bought a Martin or Taylor of the same tone woods and level the instrument could have been $2800+ . A great value. Kind of following along with your description Tony, quality instruments that a fair price.

I owned 3 different models of Yamaha guitars. One model when new cost $300 to $400 others under $300. Each of them had a sound significantly better than other classical nylon string guitars I owned. Somehow they sound louder and it feels like the whole guitar is resonating strongly from less force applied to the strings. One was CG111C (cedar top), G-55A, third one is CG10. They all sounded very good. Each was a classical guitar model.

It has a warm sound that I really like. I did have the strings changed about a week ago which is giving it a brighter sound. I'm very satisfied with it considering I knew nothing about guitars at the time of purchase.

Hard to fault your choices as most things Yamaha are superb, although I believe your No 1 compares poorly with the Fender CP60, which comes with a modest solid spruce top, 00 size and 24.75in scale. When I was a young teenager. Yamaha red labels were the coveted budget guitar, so not much changes there after 50 years! Surprised not to see the LL16 in there which at about £800 (so probably $800 as well!) comes with an Engelmann spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides. Stands up ver well against my 3 high end Martins at about 1/4 the price. That said, great to see so many budget guitars getting an outing.

I've bought and sold much more expensive acoustics but these 2 are keepers and prove that the cost of an instrument has nothing to do with the enjoyment.

Take it outside all the time or just on the couch because it's so comfy. My wife rolled her eyes when I brought it home, but if I had to downsize I may get rid of one of the others first.

For anyone interested in the flamenco style.. it is hard to go wrong with a Yamaha CG172FS for the price ($380), as an entry level instrument. Mine, has brought me countless hours of playing joy. Yamaha does use a plastic (urea) saddle and nut. Easy to change out to bone though.. and did improve the tone a bit, on just changing the saddle to bone.

I watched AT53 about 'guitar case no-nos' and I got a question. How on Earth do Molly Tuttle & Billy Strings tour on the road in scorching desert sun and frozen Nebraska snows without cracking their beloved Thompsons? How do they sling a +$15,000 guitar into an aircraft cargo hold flying at 30,000ft (-50c) travelling from Boston to LA without them cracking?

    • @johnviolette5511
      @johnviolette5511 3 года назад +1

      1) they probably have a heavy duty case like the carlton cases. 2) they probably have guitar techs that watch the guitars like a hawk to make sure they don't suffer from weather extremes. But most people do not realize that back in the old days, touring musicians had issues with their acoustic guitars as well. They suffered from the weather extremes just like today. Only they didn't have the modern tools for humidification like we have. And if they did suffer a major issue, I'm sure Thompson would take care of it for them. Molly and Billy have a spare or 2 in case that happens. i don't think it would be uncommon for touring musicians of old to have had cracks and repairs done on their guitars quite often.
I would like to say that short term extremes are ok. It's the long term exposure that is the problem. So, a day or 2 in a high humidity area will not do much damage as long as the guitar is put back in the case after the gig. but if you were to leave it out in the open for 2 weeks, or take it out of the case after being in a sub 0 temperature without letting the case and guitar acclimate to the indoor environment, then the guitar would start to be effected by the conditions. I also think most planes have temperature controlled cargo holds. After all, some people ship their pets in the cargo area of a plane. The guitar case like the carlton also provide a very insulated environment. It will help protect against the extreme weather conditions outside the case.

Upgrade the saddle to bone, ebony pins, throw medium strings on it and lower the action you’ll have a guitar that when you look to purchase a 2k-3k guitar you’ll compare it to that Yamaha and it will make you question the money you’re about to spend. Mind you it is a bigger body and will have a bigger sonic presence. It’s versatile and it gets better with age, for me.

But it sounds a bit thin and brassy - both acoustically and through the SRT2 pickup system. In fairness, I think my tastes are changing. I've fallen in love with the sound coming out of my Martin DC-16GTE. After installing a bone nut and saddle and a K&K mini - that'll just about do it for me.

TP Dude, thank you for your personal gravitas gift to earthly global axe grinders everywhere, and possibly beyond. I've said to many people, many times, "Yamaha offers the best musical value at almost every price point." Almost, just to temper my credibility. IMHO all. I've owned 35+ guitars, sold all, then started again 5 years ago. Then gave guitars to Guitars4Vets and my schools. I have 4 Yamaha acoustics, no others.
Yamaha means "jagged summit" or "peak of the peak". As you know, Yamaha takes their mission very seriously. The humble addition I'd make is, you reinforced Yamaha dominating the low price points. Yamaha also crushes it in the upper and bench made echelons. If I may....
Yamaha sent its 26 master luthiers to their Chinese factories for knowledge transfer. No other company that I know of did anything like that. Y is always pushing value down through their line up. BTW, one in 6 musical instruments in the world are Yamaha. Yamaha started as a musical company waaaaay before they got into high tech engineering enterprises like motor cycles. For example, Time Magazine named the Yamaha Clavinova digital piano one of the TOP 50 digital inventions ever! FG800 / FS800 (formerly 700s) are the most widely sold acoustic guitars in the world.
Yamaha Red Labels are MIND BLOWING value in the $700+s. So are their A Series and LUTHIER SERIES. I've chastised Y for not making their Luthier Series more well known. Values can also be found in this amazing line under $500 and < $1K but also >$3K. I consider Yamaha Luthier Series usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/guitars_basses/ac_guitars/l_series/ll_series.html and Yairi bench made guitars www.alvarezguitars.com/instruments/yairi-series/ , still 24 guys hand carving axes in the Kani mountains of Japan ruclips.net/video/-yxz6BiG_JE/видео.html , some of the greatest guitar values available on earth.
This is the golden, goldener and increasingly goldenist guitar era ever. So many to choose from Thanks for pointing out Yamaha.
    I own
FS800 - bought it so my friends could sign it. Crafted 4, yes 4 sound portals in it. It sounds amazing, like a multi point stereo.
    NT1200 @ $700 used, it's predecessor, 'cos no NTX5 ($1,750) could be found.
A1CR - at $400 new on Reverb outplayed $2,500 rosewoods in the shops. Y's layers rosewood, I kid you not, outplays solid rosewood.
Luthier16M at $775 new, ridiculously stunning value. I found 2 and gave one to my high school.
    Thank you.
Deeply appreciate all that you do.
    Best & cheers,
    Sean
