- Mathura is one of the Holiest Cities for Hindus and is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. But many are unaware that Mathura was one of the most important centres of Buddhism in ancient India.
Buddha visited Mathura once before his Parinirwana. It was home to the famous Mathura School of Indian Art between 2nd Century BC to 6th Century AD and The ancient city housed more than 20 large Buddhist monasteries. This was a period when Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism all flourished across India. Mathura became India's most important artistic production centre in the second century BC.
The Mathura School was contemporary to the Gandhara School of Art of ancient North Western India during the Kushan period (2nd century to 3rd century). Mathura was the place along with Gandhara, where the first images of Buddha were carved. The statues produced in Mathura were exported all across ancient India. Gandhara School shows strong Greco-Roman influence. In contrast, Mathura school was a native sculpture tradition
The Mathura School of Art was nearly wiped out during the 6th century along with Gandhara art because of destructions caused by the Hun invasions from central Asia in both of these regions. Mathura as a centre of sculpture art in north India was completely destroyed between the 12th to 14th centuries because of successive Islamic invasions.

Thanks
Great to see the ancient artifacts!! I'm both happy and sad looking at these artifacts...how magnificent and "complete" they would have been back in ancient times. Were you able to come across any ancient buddhist manuscripts as well?

Mathura art is second only beautiful after gandahara art . Ghandhara art is influence by both Indian and Greek style actually in gandahara the Mahayana sect established during king kanishka of kushan dynasty in buddist council held in peshwar ( capital of kushan empire) . The first Buddha Statue were also develop in gandahara and idol worshiping started in gandahara. Pure land Buddhism is transferred to china by mock of swat . Gandahara was invaded by Hun and later turks .but artifacts are present in Pakistan museum.
Is Art of ashoka mathura or gandhara style, plese explain me.
I am happy yet sad to see them. The Buddhism has so much artifacts and history in India yet , i don't see that promotion and respect from govt and people that it should get like majority faiths in India.
The idiol of Buddha which is used all over the world is a gandahara art.
There are Hindu idols of krishna and Vishnu as well ..
These people will not show you so as to fullfill ambedkarwadi agenda ....
In ancient times,Hinduism faith was destroyed by bhudhist after ashokas reigns
Thats only the truth ....
Huns distroyed the Buddhist artifacts shrine temple in All over Pakistan region and also north India.
Please add your voice also as I information
In an upcoming detailed video on Mathura School of Art !!

No evidence of kirshna
So strange and creepy
It’s because the concept of shivaism and vaisnism religion was created after 12th century. The reason buddhism disappeared from india was because of the brahmin and muslim. Archeology finding is a proof that buddhism and Jainism much more ancient than hinduism. In mathura i have witness statue of buddha and lokeshwor worship as krishna or other hindu gods
There is no evidence of krishna, It's a Buddhist place...
In 4th century bce megasthenes a greek historian confirms that people here worship heracles which is greek pronounciation of. Hare krishna in mathura ...
