Thank you for this video! It has inspired me to make my own popper lures. I have used poppers since I was very little and have always wanted to make my own. Now I have made more than 40 and still going!
That is great Travis! I'm glad I could be a inspiration to you. Keep it up and pass it on! Nothing is more gratifying than making a lure yourself and catching a fish on your creation. Good luck!
Excellent job on the lure. I have a ton of wood table/chair legs that I can't do anything with so I've decided that I'd make fishing lures with them after cutting them to the right length. So far that I've seen, you've got the best tutorial . Great job!
I use my kids old jega game for wood and care them with my pocket knife. The jenga game pieces are the perfect size for a poor type bait. Great video. Thanks.
mike conley Sounds good Mike! Use what you have! Its all about making something with your own hands and using it. Very gratifying catching fish on your own lure, especially when they are crushing it! Thanks for your comment. Good luck and good fishing!
Great video! Really helped me out a lot and gave me some mush needed 'inside' steps that I've been trying to wrap my thoughts around. Thanks for sharing!
just wanted to tell u it turned out pretty good i will be making more and i will be 🐟 fishing em thank u again for a fine 🎥 video and good fishing to u and hope i can learn more from u
I would say it’s dang good since I caught a pike first time using it! My cousin had one that cost the same price I paid, but for one. And didn’t catch anything. I say it’s a winner!
The Fishunter I'm definitely inspired. my dad has a lathe and I've never looked at woodworking this way. As an avid angler, and artist, and an amateur woodworker, I'm inspired. I wanna do it.
These poppers are works of art, and it would be a shame if small pikes stole some of them. But that would mean you would simply have to make more, right? Well done! Produce more videos please!
Great vid! Good workmanship. I found drilling a 1mm hole through and using a 1mm tig wire helps sustain the lure for much longer. It takes all the load off the wood when reeling him in.
The lathe is an old Sears brand that I got off of Craigs list. The rotory flex shaft tool is a Weecheer with a cutzall ball for a bit to cut the mouth of the popper. Good luck and good fishing!
The airbrush can run off a compressor. I have mine set up on a co2 tank, I like the lack of noise without the compressor. The Weecheer is a motor with a flex shaft and hand piece. I don't mine answering questions so don't worry about it. Good luck!
thank u for answering my question i used to buy the foam poppers from netcraft and by the way they very good people i get all my materails from them but i switched to wood and making them small as a bass popper should be i just love working with wood and they seem to cast fair using 8 weight but belive do better with 9 weight line and using basswood balsa just tires to easy thank u again
nice baits, just a little tip when painting the eyes on the wood baits try using a small nail ( like a finish nail) with just a little paint on the end of the head and just dab it on the bait. also try experiment with different size nail heads. (practice on a piece of scrap wood to get the feel for it) it does work!
Great Video! I´ll try it myself! I think you don´t really save some money until you produce a lot of poppers, but I don´t know anybody who makes poppers himself. Me and my friends always buy them. Well, mission accepted! Greetz from Germany! hol ihn!!
I already had all the tools, so the hooks are the most expensive part. I don't think it cost more than a dollar or two to make. What it does take is time! I don't do it for money, I just like to make things. Making a lure and catching some fish on your creation is very gratifying. Good luck and good fishing!
I used KVD elite, treble 2x, short 1x, strong size 6. They are expensive but they are sticky sharp, I hardly never miss a strike. The screw eye were brass 062 DI in 5/8 and 3/4 and the rings are Owner Hyper split ring size 2 35 lb. Hope that helps. You can make the same plug in different sizes and adjust the hardware to match. Good luck!
Dude, that whole production from a block of wood to catching smallies was righteous! What a great quality job and I've learned from this video. The envirotex finish is new to me. Is that a 2 part epoxy system?
🐟 fisherman i wanted to ask u do u do small fly popper too i been making them myself for a while now and streamers to i love fly fishing and love making the baits just wanted to know and like i have said before i have learned a lot watching this 🎥 video its a real good one and good fishing days to u and a blessed sunday
Yes, I do make popper flies and all sorts of other flies. I use the foam bodies and epoxy them, I also tye deerhair poppers. If you are interested in fly tying and fly fishing you should check out some of my other videos. My black leach fly is a must have in any fly box it's a proven muti species fish catcher. Goodluck and Good fishing!
That's cool there so high quality by the way how much does a small lathe like that cost I always wanted one but me and my family don't have a lot of money thanks good job
Thanks Bruen, I believe that was a 3/4 inch wrench on that one. The flex shaft is a Wecheer that accepts a 1/4 inch shaft. The bit is a cutzall ball 1/2 inch. Any ball shaped bit will work just depends on how big you want the mouth to be. Hope it helps. Good luck and good fishing!
this is awsome, i just picked up a book on how to make your own lures, but in the book they use a dremel and jig saw to form the body, you do great work. Quick question that tool that hallows out the mouth is it possible to put something like that on a drill
Tim Schroeder You could probably put it on a drill but I think it will be difficult to use at such a slow rpm. Can't hurt to try. I take that back, just make sure you where some gloves when you use it. Good luck and good fishing!
Those are beautiful and you obviously did a great job. To someone like me who has never done this before, I was surprised to see that you didn't glue the hook holders into the lure. You never have any issues with them coming out after prolonged use? I am not calling you out, just genuinely curious. Thanks for posting.
I've never had any failures, I use these with light tackle 8-10lb test. My saltwater plugs I use a through wire to hold the hooks. Thanks for the comment. Good fishing!
Wicked Video mate,Like the way u didnt Babble on like some people and just got on with the job of showing.Excellent!! Im new to this Making Lure Thingy ..Can i make Rubber Lures for this or is Wood Best? and what kind of Wood is Best or Types of wood is good to use? Thanks again Dave.
yes sir can a person make there poppers look the same I heard no two lures will look alike iam starting to belive it now no matter what i do to try to make look same they dont theres always something different about em they close but not same i make fly poppers could u give me ur opinion u make very nice lures
Thanks, I use brass screw eyes from Jann"s Netcraft. They are .062 diameter, the line tie and tail hook I use 3/4 inch long screw eyes and on the belly hook I use 5/8 inch screw eyes. Good luck and good fishing!
I've recently started making my own lures, mainly bottle-cap-rattle rooster-tails and spoons from, uhh, spoons... but I got my drummer to cough up a couple sticks. I chopped them up into various lengths for different stuff, from a big torpedo to a small cork-fly style popper, and I'm even going to try hand-carving a minnow to make one of those spinner-minnow rigs; my question is should I pre-drill guide holes for the screw eyes? Also, do you find the screw eyes and hooks enough to keep the lure right-side-up if you pre-test the pre-screwed/painted popper blank to see what way it floats?
I don't pre-drill the screw eyes. they are so small that I haven't had a problem. I don't float test the poppers but it wouldn't be a bad idea. The hooks and screw eyes are enough to keep it right side up. Good luck and good fishing!
Thanks, The first tool you would need is a wood lathe and a set of basic turning tools. Also an airbrush will give you the best results on the paint job. Good luck and good fishing!
The Fishunter Are poppers the only lures you make? I've been wanting to make my own fishing lures so I was thinking when it starts to get cold I was going to get a few tools for making my own lures, like a lathe, airbrush, possible a dremel, and some simple tools. I'm 16 so I think this would be a great hobby to try out and especially great for the winter months where I don't have any hobbies. Do you think it's worth the investment? A simple craft lathe costs like $125 and airbrush $40, so it's a bit of an investment I suppose for myself.
Hi Anthony, I make some other plugs, lead head jigs and all kinds of flies. Fly tying was how I got my start in lure making. You can get a kit with a vise and basic tools for short money and start tying flies and catching fish right away. You will learn a lot about how fish feed and what works to catch them. The lathe and other tools can be very expensive. I got mine from someone on Craigslist. You can also get unfinished lure bodies from Jann's Netcraft and finish them how you like. Just another way to get started for less money. Good luck and good fishing!
I was thinking a popper out of plastic pvc are there any videos showing how too ? The one side would be easy - a cap that fits inside snug like- but the other side shaping it down might be difficult .
The best way to make a plastic lure would be to make a mold and pour it. Check out Larry Dahlberg at make lure .com. He makes all kinds of lures. I'm sure you can learn something there. Good Luck and Good Fishing!
Great job!! I have to ask, does the water get into the wood where you screw the hooks into? Do you need to seal those areas? Just wondering. Beautiful work.
I haven't had any issues with water. You could screw the eye in, unscrew and put some epoxy in the hole then screw the eye back in. Might be unnecessary though. Good luck and Good fishing!
could u tell me what size fly rod would be big enough to cast a bait made out of basswood the lure is 3/4 in long with a 5/8 in head size thats size i been making them
First of all, congratulations for the initiative to publish a video like this. I wonder what kind of paint you use, and what type of paint gun? thank you.
I believe it was 3/4 of an inch on the mouth end and just tapered down to about a 1/8 inch or so. I believe the total length was about 2 3/4 inches or so. I forget how much they weigh. There really is no right or wrong dimensions to make them. You could make them larger or smaller in length and diameter. It's all up to you. Hope the video helps you and good luck!
Gabe Berti Thank you! I actually do some art work also. I carve and paint wildfowl. You can see it on face book at Jusin Zacek Wildfowl Carver. Thanks for the comment! Good luck and good fishing!
yes could u tell me what kind of airbrush gun to use for the kind of painting u do on ur lures I cant buy the top of line but i want something to do just what u doing I would be thankful for any thought
+Jimmy Anderson I use an Iwata HP-A but I do a lot of other painting also. You could use a cheaper Badger airbrush that you could find at your local arts and craft store. Check online to see what you can find. Good luck and Good fishing!
Do you want a hard wood or a soft one? I'm thinking of making some of these (larger versions) for surf fishing. Also, is there a stainless metal for the hardware that doesn't create a displeasing electromagnetic field for the fish?
+mtuers I make pencil poppers for the surf also. I use white cedar and stainless thru wire. the hooks I use are galvanized. I'm not sure about the electromagnetic field but I do know I catch big fish on them! Good Luck and Good fishing!
+The Fishunter thank you so much I got a lathe for Christmas and already turned a lure but don't know how to through wire the bigger ones I plan on making for surmising

What brand/type of wood lathe are you using? I'm looking into getting the same setup and doing my own lures. What tool with the ball tip is that?
The lathe is an old Sears brand that I got off of Craigs list. The rotory flex shaft tool is a Weecheer with a cutzall ball for a bit to cut the mouth of the popper. Good luck and good fishing!
With the cutzall and spray paint, does that work off a compressor? Last question, sorry. I'm new with tools (this would be my first "tools" sadly)
The airbrush can run off a compressor. I have mine set up on a co2 tank, I like the lack of noise without the compressor. The Weecheer is a motor with a flex shaft and hand piece. I don't mine answering questions so don't worry about it. Good luck!

Your welcome, Netcraft is where I get the foam bodies from and all the hardware the the bass popper in the video. Try a coat of epoxy over the balsa.
Awesome...

Except for the eyes, thank you for painting without stencils. Great job.

Thats awesome man! Great looking lure!
Thanks, glad you liked it. Good luck and good fishing!
Oh yea btw do you have a template or can you just tell me what the diameter is at the widest point and how long this is. I'm going to give this a go!
I was using a 3/4 inch wrench to calibrate the widest point and lure is about 2 3/4 inches long. Have fun with it! Good luck and good fishing!
me gusta tu banda sonora... muy buen video..
Very good !! wanna try...

What size treble hooks, eye screes, and rings did you use to make the lure?
I used KVD elite, treble 2x, short 1x, strong size 6. They are expensive but they are sticky sharp, I hardly never miss a strike. The screw eye were brass 062 DI in 5/8 and 3/4 and the rings are Owner Hyper split ring size 2 35 lb. Hope that helps. You can make the same plug in different sizes and adjust the hardware to match. Did you use basswood for the lure or some other type of wood
White cedar, but bass wood works too!
il est vraiment au top ce leurre

what type of burr are you using and what size head is it. great video

Good luck and Good fishing!
what type of wood is good for lure making or does it even matter
Do you want a hard wood or a soft one? I'm thinking of making some of these (larger versions) for surf fishing. Also, is there a stainless metal for the hardware that doesn't create a displeasing electromagnetic field for the fish?
+mtuers I make pencil poppers for the surf also. I use white cedar and stainless thru wire. the hooks I use are galvanized. I'm not sure about the electromagnetic field but I do know I catch big fish on them! Good Luck and Good fishing!
+The Fishunter please make a video on through wiring or if you know of one tell me please.
Its funny that you say that because I do plan on making a video on that soon.
+The Fishunter thank you so much I got a lathe for Christmas and already turned a lure but don't know how to through wire the bigger ones I plan on making for surmising
