This was so helpful Miguel! (landscape photographer very much learning portrait) Thank you. I've struggled a few times exposing for the highlights while still trying to use HSS. Keep it up, your videos are awesome!
Nice! Back when I first started with my old Alien Bee strobes it was pretty much the only way I could get away with using them outdoors. Now with HSS it's not as necessary, but in certain situations it still comes in handy.
I have a sigma 30mm f1.4. I want to use the filter. So the 52 mm protector filter is correct for the 30 mm f 1.4? I want to use it for portraits. Thanks
Greetings! nice presentation, congratulations. would you please give me your opinion on whether I should buy the original Canon or the soft one, Canon EF-EOS R adapter with neutral density input filter (V-ND)
I had never understood why ND filters exist (known unknown) and I had never heard of high speed sync (unknown unknown). Thanks for the video. Very well done.
The only reason I like this version of ND filters over my Kase or OTC clip in sensor ND filter, is for faster removal or attachment. What I want to know since this is a variable ND, do you still get the dreaded X at some point within the adjustment range?
My OCD when Miguel took out the naked ND filter from his pocket! And then my surprise when there was no dust particles! …witchcraft! Love it and thanks for the insight with knowledge
I love this tutorial. It took me back to learning the basics of photography and back when Francisco was doing everything in HSS. Thank you for not being "above" an ND filter tutorial. I appreciate your genuine passion for photography, my friend. And how DID you run that fast in the other video? 🤔😂😂
Thank you! I decided to take it back to basics this year and cover some topics that sparked my photography experience. Glad you enjoyed it! As for how fast I ran, I can neither confirm nor deny 😂😂
Potentially. Anytime you add glass in front of your lens you're messing with the optical formula that the manufacturer intended. Might make a video about this soon.
Hey I need some help I have the godox ad200 with the Sony a7c max shutter 1/4000 with HSS enabled. However when I shoot at this level shutter with both HSS enabled on the strobe and the Sony, the photo comes out completely black? Why is this
I'm interested to see your HSS and comparison video. A lot of photographers claim you get more power using the ND method but I did a few tests of my own and didnt find that to be true at all. What I do agree however is that HSS likely drains your battery power more/ is more taxing on your flash than ND(slower recycle at max power etc)
@@MiguelQuilesJr Love it! I use VND's outside with flash as well and this is the first time I've seen anyone do a video on it. Good to see another take on it, thanks!
Great video!! Quick question - Can you use ND grad filters to reduce overexposure of neon lights?? I am doing talking head vids in low light with a neon sign in the background. The problem is that the neon sign appears overexposed (white & blurry) even after I've made changes to the camera settings (Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed). Plus I am using 2 soft box lights and a Sony ZV-E10 with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. Yout thoughts to using ND filters in this case??
Thank you and great question! You can use an ND to bring the overall exposure down which will bring the neon lights to where they need to be, but then you'll have to add even more light to yourself and the rest of your scene. That's how I do it at my studio 👍
@@MiguelQuilesJr thanks! Would you know if there are any ND filters where you can use them for only certain portions of the lens? From what I understand from your video, the ND filter will affect everything that you see through your lens. But let’s say that you only want the ND filter to affect a section of the footage, then is it possible to do this?? In my case, the overexposed neon sign takes up the upper top right corner of my talking head video, so preferably I’d just want the ND filter to affect only the neon sign.
You could use this type of filter, or you can use ND film to place over the neon sign itself if it lends itself to that kind of application. amzn.to/3fCLRtA
@@MiguelQuilesJr Once again, thanks!! So, if you use this ND film, then you just put it directly on the neon sign and when I start recording my talking head video, then the ND film will reduce the level of exposure of only the neon sign in the footage. Is my understanding of how the ND film works correct??
That is correct. It would lower the exposure of the neon sign which has the film applied. The sheets are usually square or rectangular so it may not look great depending on the sign, it's an option though.
Really great video. There are some cameras that are incapable of high speed sync,,so using an nd filter is a great option for shooting with open apertures
Watched Joel Grimes use an nod with at 1.8 on an overcast day and got motion blur in the clouds. Cool method and it really does give you back your flashes power.
Can you please do this with the Sony a7c? Since I want to buy this Camera and some reviews point it's limitation to the shutter speed. Can you do similar Video using ND Filter but with Sony a7c shooting wide open like f/1.8 or f/1.4 etc....with external flash? Thanks!
Happy new year Miguel. Thanks for putting this video together, may I ask a question. How do you manage with focus and depth of field with using a nd filter?
Happy New Year and thanks for watching! Focusing here was the same as usual for me. I use wide area, continuous focus using Eye-af. It makes the process super easy!
I'm stuck with an old Paul C Buff Einstein that doesn't support HSS. Great for studio work but no good in an outdoor scenario like in the video. Would you buy an ND filter or try to sell the Einstein and buy something that supports HSS?
That's a tough one. Einstein is a great light, but you'll need a batter PA k to use it on location. That will probably cost a couple hundred dollars, but then again so will a good variable ND filter. I'd sell the light and buy something modern that supports HSS and TTL personally.
Very succinctly explained Mr Quiles. Thank you. One question though. HSS and ND filters allow you to achieve the same thing, right? Expose for the background and then expose (light) the subject. So how do you choose one over the other?
Hi Miguel, Would you please test using a long lens 70-200m zoom in all the way? I think you should get same effect of shooting wide open and cheaper. ND is a must if you want to shoot video at low frame rates too. Great video! Thanks
Great video tutorial on the use of ND filters and HSS ! But can anyone out there , tell me if using a reflector while photographing in HSS . Have any adverse effect on your image ?
Not really outdated at all. You actually loose a ton of power using HSS. Also needed for high end cameras like the z9 that are starting to ditch mechanical shutters all together.
Hello Miguel, thanks to share this interesting video. Allow me 2 questions please: 1) Do you prefer to use a good solid ND or a good VND to shoot documentaries in Log 4K? I mean documentaries around the world to shoot cities and people. 2) Why everybody always uses the lens hood to shoot in sunny days, then when guys use a ND filter, nobody use the lens hood anymore? I think it is a bad habit not to use a lens hood with an ND filter. Thank you.
Nice! This concept had been on my mind and you’re right on time with this example thank you. I was wondering about introducing a CP filter into portraiture in much the same manner. I don’t currently use any types of filters is why I ask. All the same should basically apply when using a CP filter I’m guessing, except I may still have to use the HSS on the flash in that case. It’d be nice to polarize the harsh highlights say reflecting from blonde hair or off leaves in the shot.
My typing sucks😂 Great video!! Question: How did you know to set your Profoto strobe at 5 (when you started to shoot)? Did you use TTL to meter the light? How do use your light meter with high speed sync and the ND filter! ALWAYS GREAT VIDEOS FROM YOU!
Thank you and great question! I dial in my light power settings the same way I cook, it's all to taste! You could use a light meter as well, but after awhile you get good at just doing it by sight. 📸
Been using them for a while. What I hate is having to have a different one for each different lens. Canon on the R5 had the EF to RF adapter with a built in variable ND filter. It's absolutely awesome as with a L grip on the R5 my finger tip is right at the dial for the ND. So it's like it has a built in adjustable ND filter that fits every lens. I set shutter speed and aperture and just dial in the ND I need to get under 1/200th with my fingertip. It's awesome. And I'm not looking to change to RF lenses at all.
If you're using a DSLR it can definitely be challenging. On modern mirrorless cameras that use phase detection its a lot easier. You can always use a slide in filter instead, where you would focus, drop the filter, then take the shot. Might make a video about this soon.
@@MiguelQuilesJr I'm amateur at harsh sunlight I use sony mirrorless (Nisi variable ND + 2 godox speed light) I decrease ND to it's lowest stop first and focus manually and increase more stop ND before shoot which I find time consuming !! Which one you recommend AD200 or 300 I'm planning to get one after mastering this technique!!
If you have a strobe that does HSS then go that route. Personally I use 2 speedlights (no HSS) attached to a dual speedring softbox, and a 6 stop nd filter
