First went to Portugal in 1981 - surfed the whole coast north to south, count on one hand the other surfers I saw. Saw more donkey carts. Went back in 86 - surfers common. Finally returned in 2018 --- surfing absolutely ruined by crowds of 'surfing schools' - but my goodness the amazing toll roads, and massively improved infrastructure (EU cash). And the wonderful Portuguese and countryside - perfeito! Muito obrigado o Portugal, te amo!

Cars back then, especially British cars, didn't have air con. And car seats were often made of vinyl, which you used to stick to in hot weather. So to drive in Portugal during high season must have been a nightmare. It was bad enough during British summers.
