  • Boy George pops by to discuss why 1984 was "the year of more" and how Culture Club was also in competition with bands like Wham! and Duran Duran. "I think all artists have a nemesis," George said. "When George Michael came along I was like, 'He's called George? That's not allowed!"

      Copy paste below
"Thank you, America, you've got taste, style and you know a good drag queen when you see one," George offered, with a coy kiss to the camera.
In 2018, the queer icon reflected on the moment during an interview with variety: "I didn't really consider what it meant for anyone else, as I was in England…But people [in the U.S.] were freaking out when I said that. My press agent at the time, Susan Blond, literally cried.

The ambiguity in the lyrics he wrote back then was pure genius!! Such an inspiration!!
I recall having taken my time to figure out what Karma Chameleon is about, and I'm still scratching my head over Church Of The Poison Mind, considering English isn't my native language.
George Michael began writing more universally understood lyrics, but they still have lots of meaning, and he wasn't a "freak", but those were the 1980s for you.
Too bad I was to yooung to rememeber it all, but I've always appreciated the music both have made.

Really like thos interview, I'm a huge fan of George Micharl ever since Wham! broke. I always thought Boy George and Culture Club were some sort of superficial novelty act, initially, buy Boy George planned out well especially after Culture Club, also doing the DJ circuit, successful. Its really Sad what happened to George Michatl in 2016 😥 Shocking & Devastated (Still feel someone is to blame!!) but Boy George bless him and his presence and existence, he's some how 'come out' on top. Boys done good
He's bright, colourful, articulate and entertaining. Also has an opinion and very honest 👍👌

i am SO glad that he didnt say Pete Burns, whom the media was always trying pit against him. the same way they were always trying to force some rivalyry between Prince and Michael Jackson, or Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, or even Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. George isnt playing that BS, he will choose his own nemesis.

I thought he was going to say Madonna. It’s funny bc Culture Club was so big in the early to mid 80’s. Then as BG disintegrated into drugs, Culture Club faded away just as Wham and George Michael were rising. But he is right, there was something about Boy George that just clicked with America. I remember seeing him on “Solid Gold” 1984 and even the adults around me were saying “oh I like him”, and I come from a very conservative background. David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust was not as big as George. Maybe BG rode the wave of liberalism from the 1970’s. Ironic that George Michael has to play it “straight” to make his huge success in America. But careful what you wish for. GM was THE hottest thing in 1987 in America. But he has since said it was too much pressure.

Not at first they weren't. Boy George is referring to WHAM! during '82-'83 when their first album "Fantastic" was very successful in U.K./Europe but unnoticed in the USA. Wham! didn't become popular in the USA until 1984 when their second album "Make it Big" was released.

Lots of British bands did well... like Duran Duran..thanks to MTV. I still love you Boy George! But I’m a fan of a lot of 80’s music! George likes to re-write history in his favor... Wham were actually on Top of the Pops before Culture Club.

I think he was talking about the brief period between when Culture Club made it and before Wham had fully taken off here. Otherwise, yes...Wham was every bit as big as Culture Club to their respective audiences.

I really don't get the vitriol in this comments thread. It's ok if you love Wham! and George Michael - it doesn't mean you have to hate Boy George / Culture Club (or vice-versa). George is referring to a sort of rivalry he had first when Culture Club broke America and Wham! (in the fantastic era) didn't, then when Culture Club's fortunes began to slide Wham! became megastars. George always respected George Michael's talent - and envied it - he knew GM was on another level talent wise, but then compared to GM few people were on the same level. But they were actually friends, and any feud ended a long, long time ago.

Yes, Wham was massively popular in America! I know...I lived it. Right, Wham's first album didn't really take off in America, but Wham's second album in 1984 was massively popular! I was one of those screaming teenage girls who was so in love with George Michael--his looks AND his phenomenal talent as a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger.GM was perfection to me and to so many others. I liked Culture Club, but they were just a passing fancy. Wham! and George Michael's music stands the test of time! That says a LOT. American fans were crazy about Wham! in the 80s--I was lucky enough to see Wham! in concert in 1985. GM gave an electrifying performance! Unforgettable! How magnificent he looked and how pitch perfect he sang live. GM was so talented, unique, and special. My favorite singer/songwriter of all time!

GM's fame was not as massive in the US as in Europe and elsewhere after Faith because he didn't want that level of fame. He stepped off the train, which was going fast and furious, as it were. He took on Sony. If he wanted to play the game, he would have continued to be a global mega star, including the US. But for him, being an artist was more important than being a celebrity. BG was obviously jealous of GM, who was the complete package. A man among men. Love and respect.

Crazybob07 True! George just couldn’t cope with fame on that scale... few can... it messed up Michael Jackson!!

Crazybob07 All three are very different, and appeal to very different demographics. You can't compare them.

REctershi23 23 he wasnt comparing artist to artist..he was just saying who he thought could've been bigger.

Somerset I actually thought it was impossible to compare different things but I was wrong. My mental doctor made me compare antonyms..which are opposites, so it IS possible. However, this person wasnt comparing artists
.. was just saying who they thought couldve been bigger lol.
