The fact that the lowest speed is so gentle and quiet is precisely why I love this fan. I aim it directly at my chair in my office during the summer and get just the amount of cooling I need, but super quietly.
I found this model recently in good condition, but the bearings were starting to lock up. Gave it some cleaning and it runs fine and not afraid to use oscilation since I used a plastic lock to secure the wire
Should've told you this when I did it. But the motor is not as weak as you thought. last month I modified a blade from one of those generic Hong Chia like stand fans from the 90s with the crescent shaft and found out how light it really was. The problem is that the blade used here is that its really heavy the same weight as the lasko 2016 from the year 2000. You Should try it if you find one with the same blade
I have this exact model, and it's still working perfectly. But there is no date on the bottom. It's served me well for 20 years. It's ultra quiet. The quietest I've ever heard. Modern fans seem to not be up to the same quietness.
I run a 12 inch 1999 White-Westinghouse at night which is very similar to this fan, and it has that same grunting sound on start-up, but it goes away within 5 seconds.
@@virtualpianoman5175 A few drops on one side will not work it through to everywhere. The sound could also be coming from lack of grease in the oscillation gearbox.
I couldn't tell a *DAMN* between the two faens' airflow with that toilet paper flapping in the breeze. Absolutely a complete (panty) waste of time! Quantify, quantify, quantify.
I've seen an Eagle-branded Chinese table fan that was very similar to this SMC. It had the push-buttons in the same place as this SMC, but tilted. It had a spot for a mechanical timer, but the timer broke and was removed. Ran on 240 volts. Seemed to have the same blades, but in a green-blue turquoise color instead. And the base was larger than the base on this SMC fan. EDIT: The Eagle table fan seemed to be of much higher quality. One of the better Chinese-only products.
This is interesting. I wasn't aware that people collect these. I have the TH12 made in 98 I believe. I've run it every night for the last ten years and no problems. Considered buying something newer but I can't kill my current one.
Keep it going, it's much better than any of the ones you can buy today. A lot of stuff from the 90s is going to start becoming collectible in the next decade or so.
I have a video request, can you make a video talking about childhood fans including the 16" SMC fan. I like listening to fan collector's storys about fans that have made a impact on their life.
I still think it's not running up to par. My low speed is about 150% of yours and oschullates faster too. Mine also gets going much faster, and while it has that unhealthy sound you were talking about, it's not as loud or long lasting. I hope yours isn't on it's way out, but perhaps a servicing will improve it somewhat. They must have had fantastic bearings because the spindown on mine is about a minute.
I sure hope it's not on its way out, it looks like it was hardly ever used!.. Perhaps the capacitor has drifted.. I've been told these have steel bearings.. As long as you keep them oiled they'll work well, but once they dry out they have a high risk of binding.. The 12" one I have had a lengthy spindown too..
if you want get more horsepower out of this fan take apart back of the motor remove all the old hard oil and dump zoom spout turbine oil down the shaft that will give you more horse power
One of my favorite fan videos because i got to see 3 fans to smcs and a lasko i enjoyed the video and i like the Startup Sound on the Lasko bro Also Can you do a Startup Sound video on that Lasko as a request for me bro thanks
Nice bro what is in my video collection that is good unless SMC good good good it’s good it’s good it’s good good good that’s all it’s good evening you have a 12 inch version you can have that 12 inch model
That Lasko fan rocks..

I like it for the same reason..

Thanks for letting me know.

The larger blades move more air at slower speeds so there's less noise.. Modern fans are not built with the same quality and design..

I tend to think the bearings are just dry.
@@JordanU Might be, but I'm not throwing oil to it until it shows signs of lockup. Get the most use out of that "perma-lube" as ya can.
@@virtualpianoman5175 I'd fill the oil wicks with oil prior; running it until it shows an issue is just going to cause it to wear out faster.
@@JordanU I just put a few drops on the front bearing and it still makes the same sound. Maybe it's just a characteristic of these fans as they age.

Everyone else could..
You couldn't possibly speak for everyone else.
True, that was an exaggerated statement.. Perhaps speaking for the majority will be more reasonable..
These catch fire from OSCILLATING
No, the recall was only issued for the pedestal models..
Also maybe the desk models

Oh..
I just found that recall

These 16" SMC models were not known for their quality by any means..
Oh good
What is?

Never knew these came in 16”
The 12" ones are a lot more common..
First 16" iv ever seen.
I got a fan you've never seen before? What an accomplishment!
Great video Jordan also can you please do another phone ringing video
Maybe, but that has nothing to do with this video..
I know I'm just asking and great video

Is that a recal fan I just learned the 97 99 stand fans were the recal ones
