I'm thrilled that you're back painting and posting videos! I think anyone who knows anything about art will immediately recognize your painting as a study of Sargent. That's saying a lot, because most people can't draw a convincing stick man. It's a GOOD painting, especially for two hours! One of the things I love about you is your ability to see the beautiful pieces that make up the whole. It's a rare gift, so keep making good use of it!
I like that you dive right into the bold colors and then proceed to flesh out the subtleties. Many people are often afraid to get there and take much more time than needed
I am just taken with your process and how you go back over the duplication of the masters painting! You have only invested 2 hours? Yet you are well on your way to creating a wonderful painting! I am not sure how many hours Mr. Sargent spent on this portion of his painting! I would grade you at a B+ I have enjoyed watching your videos on creating painting studies, so well done! Superior filming techniques too. I know that your Patreons get more inclusive content and I hope that you are able to bring some of that content over to the free platform of RUclips. Thank you for sharing your lovely portrait with us. See you next video!
I've just done my first master study, of DaVinci's Lady with an Ermine piece. I learned so much from doing it! I'll be posting a full video of my process and thoughts in a few weeks time.
Happy to have a video like this! I notice in the art video/teaching community reference to the same language (value composition hue saturation etc) and i have noticed a development in Slew over the years from simply stating the words to actually understanding what the words represent. I know personally I'm hyper critical when i get a likeness in the way you described it, but i actually liked to see where 2 hours put you. Like you say, another 2 hours could fix a lot of the choices, but often where we are after the first hour says more than where we are after 100 hours
I always love to see you paint a portrait. I’ve painted for years, and portraits are not easy. I will agree that drawing will help you see things. My approach to portraits is not like the masters. I literally draw the subject onto the canvas with as much precision as possible until that line drawing looks like the subject. I know, all the others out there say it’s not the correct way to do it, but in the end it saves me paint time. And when you are doing a commission, time is money. And trust me, most clients don’t want to spend the money we artists need to work on a painting properly. The one thing I noticed in your painting that was the most obvious in terms of not getting the likeness is the gaze of her eyes. In the original she seems to be looking a bit downward, where as you have her looking straight on. But hey, you getting more study time than I am! I’m working on too many commissioned pieces to try and do study work. Maybe real soon! 😎 keep up the good work! You are awesome!❤️
SAME! I’ve been trying to make a commission so I’m trying to get inspired and watching other people paint makes me wants to, I guess that’s an adhd thing anyway I digress- my process is exactly like yours!! Painstakingly craft every detail, then fill in, problem with that though is sheerness and then covering the planned out lines becomes an issue so I love watching people paint like this, starting in big shapes and then slowly pull in the shading together. Crazy how much the process step by step can change
Really cool and inspiring to see small studies like this, I would say that maybe the main issue with the likeness is your eyes may have been a bit too big, its a common issue i struggle with personally but other than that i dont think the proportions were too far off or anything
It’s amazing how few artists just RUclips their work…. I don’t want to learn to do it, I want to enjoy watching your skill, like I watch a lot of wood turners for the same reason I have no wood lathe though!
Nice one Slew 😌 Was good to see your art books and visit to museum for inspo. Sometimes you don't get the feel of a painting until you see it in real life (Rothko is a good example, if you saw it in a book you might think it's a colour swatch....but if you see the giant canvases in front of you, it's really something else....not everyone's cuppa tea, but I love his work). So yeah, good to see you getting inspired by artists that came before us. It's great to learn from others and share the inspiration. Nice one! Hope you're enjoying having time to paint again, this one came out great! peace&love 🌿🐛🌻
Hey I love your videos! Is there any way you could put what pallette you are using in the future? Whether it be the zorn or just the colors listed or something like that?
I myself always struggle with drawing noses too small lol. BUT I’ve realized that, because I’m still practicing, it’s okay to not get the likeness. And there’s no use beating yourself up- you get no where with that. Of course I’ll still strive for better likeness, but as the saying goes “(proper) practice makes (better)” And training the eyes to calculate proportions is hard~!
Hi! Thanks so much for posting this. @slew - what brand of sketchbook is that? It looks like it can take oil really well. Also, how long do you let the pages dry before flipping to the next?
Honestly, I really need to do some studies like this haha-- I love these painting sessions and getting some insight into your process! If you're interested in more of Sargent's work, maybe you could do some videos going on museum trips to the places his work is exhibited? I know that the MFA and Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum in Boston have a lot of his work up, and since you're in NYC it could be a fun day trip or a weekend. idk, just an idea if you wanted to run with it, I know I personally would love to hear more about the artists that inspire you and that you study from :)
well that was great I was waiting for another master copy. can anybody help me I'm struggling to find high resolution of original paintings is there somewhere I can find them?
google arts and culture, maybe? the museum section is useful, and you can also search for any specific painting. dont know if theyre that high resolution but its a good resource to have handy.
you should do a drawing that also works as a value study one day and then another day just transfer said drawing and paint it, that way you will not get lost
I feel like it's the same girl, just a few years older..... You managed to age her up. Her face seems elongated and there's not a much shadow in the eyes, her mouth is fuller somehow as well. The background in the original seems to have a yellow undertone that yours is lacking, so that may have changed color selection as well? I love watching these, tysm for t the time to share your experience and ideas with the world.
I feel as though you NAILED THE shape of her chin, lips and nose is almost spot on- to me it’s the eyes that fall flat. Almost literally flat. Perhaps gloss them up a taaad? if I were to critique. Then that’s it. But great otherwise. It could also be a microcosm of a difference in her eyebrows I think and that can change someone from like .. innocent and pouty almost (with eyebrows? Idk..lol) and then next stroke to suddenly slightly smirky and one step to dubious, I think that’s what I love about portraits is nailing the expressions just right, even down to emotion in the eyes.
oh really. Canon in f*cking D...come on. Just say you hate bass line players, dude. You just want their little delicate souls destroyed do you? D, A, B, F sharp, G, D, G, A ...just those f*cking 8 notes in the same order with the most boring 4-quarter rhythm and you repeat that for *over fifty times* until the song is finally over. the painting process was cool though. you did a good job. I kinda like the reddish hair against the greenish background... that's kinda nice.
Dude what are you talking about? Are you really getting on the artist for his choice of background music? It’s such a stupid detail to be mad about when someone has put so much time and effort to make a cool creative video. You’re focusing on the wrong things
So glad that we're back to painting content on the channel! I've missed videos like this.
I enjoy your painting. And you have a great attitude about learning.
Slew!!! This came out sooo good! I love seeing these types of videos of yours 😊
Thanks Ana!

I love that you are sharing the struggle… it’s a myth that you just have fun and it’s easy to create all the time.
I like that you dive right into the bold colors and then proceed to flesh out the subtleties. Many people are often afraid to get there and take much more time than needed

I was in the Portland Maine art museum last week looking at Sargents. They never cease to amaze me. They are so precise, yet so loose.

Good take, always ensure the values are correct!
Love your art spirit Slew!
I can see you changed the shape of her chin at the end and that changed everything in my opinion!! Great job realy enjoy watching you do oils

I love the portrait of Lady Agnew, but his big painting the sent his career out of vogue, was Madam X. Very risque.
Wish I had the time to practice and study these people painting skills.
Masters had the advantage of having the bigger brains on how to create something without photography.
Thank you Sam !!
He’s back
Excellent
