2:43 one of the best game music tracks ever, can't stop listening to it. I love how in Afterburner Climax for arcade you can pick the original soundtrack too
Very good port indeed for a great into-the-screen shooter from that golden age of video games, that golden Sega era along with Space Harrier; OutRun & many others... =)
Ahh, this game takes me back, it was awesome used to play it all the time before I went to school, either that or M.U.S.H.A or Sonic 2! Awesome review too!
Oh man, my local funworks had this game. It was so cool because you climbed inside a cockpit simulator that tilted left or right by how you moved the joystick. After a few years it broke and it didn't move anymore, but it was still my favorite game in the arcade.
Ah yes, stuck here sick at home, waiting on my stupid covid test, and binge watching old Classic Game Room reviews. This game was a favorite of mine in arcades, master system and eventually on Genesis and despite playing all three of them a million times my Dad could never remember it's name and still calls it 'F-14 Tom Bomb'.. to this day. So I've adopted the habit.. nice review on an old favorite of mine, F-14 Tom Bomb!
Agreed. The Final Countdown was a great movie. That movie is so old that Martin Sheen looks like Charlie and Kirk Douglas looks like Michael. I also liked the fact that it was a science fiction movie and not a friggin romance movie where a guy loses his balls after his friend dies and turns into a crybaby.
Nice review. It looks really good despite the lower quality recording. I have to say, I had a problem recording Tex Murphy 3 and had to use my dvd-recorder. It did bother me that the recoding quality took a hit but at least I could actually get it to without the glitches.
You can turn on the autofire in options, but I agree the port should have been better. They should have had more different terrain and included the plane landing sequences. Outrun used twice the cartridge size and they should never have put After Burner II on a mere 4mbit cart.
In fact, it was a Top Gun game, but without the licence. The first After Burner was released after the great success of the movie. You can see photos during the demontration which clearly shows "Maverick" in the cockpit and some shots showing the Tomcats from outside.
You should try to get hooked up with screw attack and there "My vids dont suck" contest! If it matters! cause I really think you are better then the ones I have seen on there by far plus u put way more videos out then them! Well I guess then we could not see them on here as fast if you did! anyway great review once again
one of the rare appearances of the HMS Sega Enterprises i see, a fine vessel indeed, currently in service somewhere in the mid pacific, if rumour is to be believed
my childhood in one video . maaaaaan when i played this on my sega master system 2 , i was blown away with how fast it was and responsive . the music is just an other master piece .
Two things after burner related" 1.) There's after burner: black falcon for the PSP. Its an awesome game! its everything that makes afterburner great on the PSP and more! 2.) Afterburner Climax, a SEGA arcade released in 2006, IS coming to the 360 and PSN this Spring. Thats a great game and plays homage to this after burner.
thing is i dont wanna modify my genesis/cdx so i wanna know, the quality you speak of, can i achieve it with an emu? if so, what are the best settings to use u think?
This is an excellent game, and for european collectors, this game works on pal consoles too, so you can get the ntsc version, it will work even with trms consoles. :D
You should try finding a scart RGB cable for your genesis. You might need a RGB -> Component converter, but the quality is significantly better than even S-Video.
Absolutely, the 32X version was pretty close to being arcade perfect... it really was one of the better home ports of this game... though I think there may have also been an arcade perfect port on the Saturn as well (which is kinda rare, I think?)... and Shenmue II had a playable version of the game too, in one of the arcades. There is also an arcade perfect version of Space Harrier on the 32X as well.
Ah, now that I'm old enough to know that the word exists (I played this when I was like 3), it sounds like the enemies screaming "FUCK!" whenever they die.
As simple as this game is, it's a ton of fun and I played it just about every day back then. The only thing about it that really bugs me is the autofiring machine gun. It eats up a sound channel making constant repetitive noise and seems "cheap" since there's no consequence (no ammo, overheating, or anything). They did that because there weren't enough buttons (the 6 button controller didn't exist yet). You can remap the controls to make the guns manual, but then you lose something else. They could have given the option to use Start for an action button and lose the Pause feature. I think it should also have limited ammo, regardless of whether it was like that in the arcade.
You should really try the Game "Gun Metal" for the classic xbox (may work on 360). Its a game with a Jet which can transform into a giant Roboter with mass destruction and lots of fun. :)
When I ran into the arcade machine in '88, I thought the "avionics voice" was saying "fire, fi-fire, fucking fire" , having seen "Top Gun" two years earlier.
@Troyman021 Granted it's on the default config but you can (and should) turn it off in the options. I despise autofire on general principle as it basically cheapens the game.
If you like this, you really need to get your hands on the 32X version, called After Burner Complete. It KILLS this version graphically and sound wise, and doesn't make your guns fire constantly.
At least they didn't goof the cover art up as bad as Bomber Raid on the SMS. They show an SR-71 Blackbird dropping bombs despite it being a spy plane and on top of that the player is flying a World War 2 Era fighter plane not a supersonic spy plane 😅
@nooblet911 indeed+ a saturn is worth owning.but this is the best they could do at the time and with the hardware knowledge of that time, this is as good as outrun on the genesis.
No, it's not a joke. I don't know why I got two thumbs down. Perhaps I was given the wrong information in replying to you comment. If so, then I apologize.
As great as this looks, it's a shame SEGA didnt come out with a SEGA CD version which could handle scaling and rotation way better than the Genesis ever could.
@@BenJabituya - It did. But had it come to the SEGA CD - along w/the likes of Space Harrier, Out Run, Jurassic Park, OutRunners, Power Drift & more - it's likely the SEGA CD would've faired much better.
An arcade style level like Afterburner II would have been cool if it had appeared in this years jet fighter game, H.A.W.X or After Burner II Online Arcade. Actually I can see SEGA doing this since they are milking every drop of cash out of these vintage genres.
2:43 one of the best game music tracks ever, can't stop listening to it. I love how in Afterburner Climax for arcade you can pick the original soundtrack too
Great game. Whenever I play this game, I listen to Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins on repeat.
Honestly Afterburner climax is the best in my opinion.
(KEYWORD: Opinion!!!)
ha. .I played it when I was a kid :) aaaaah. . oh the memories
Got to love how cheap most of the Genesis classics are these days. It's one of the best systems to collect for.
After CGR mentioned this in there last genesis review, i was hoping for a review :D~!!! Great like always !
Very good port indeed for a great into-the-screen shooter from that golden age of video games, that golden Sega era along with Space Harrier; OutRun & many others... =)
Hahahaha, you mentioned the F-15/F-14 disparity EXACTLY as I was typing a comment about it!!
Ahh, this game takes me back, it was awesome used to play it all the time before I went to school, either that or M.U.S.H.A or Sonic 2!
Awesome review too!

22 players had to stop because a T-1000 was pursuing them.
Nice review, it surprised me how great this Genesis version turned out! Still watching in 2019!
I just got this game for 5 bucks, thank you for reminding me of yet another game I forgot about
Agreed. The Final Countdown was a great movie. That movie is so old that Martin Sheen looks like Charlie and Kirk Douglas looks like Michael. The majority of us enjoy the ipod reviews, thank you.
Marvelous game for its time... many games that came after AB-II didn't nearly match this technology, speed, music and smooth animation.
You can turn on the autofire in options, but I agree the port should have been better. They should have had more different terrain and included the plane landing sequences. Outrun used twice the cartridge size and they should never have put After Burner II on a mere 4mbit cart.
the final countdown, man its so awesome that ya mentioned that one
Oh my god yes. Someone who knows planes and macross. You have my subscription forever.
The theme music for this game is sweet.
Looks intense, the perspective really makes you feel like there is some frantic action going on.
In fact, it was a Top Gun game, but without the licence. The first After Burner was released after the great success of the movie. You can see photos during the demontration which clearly shows "Maverick" in the cockpit and some shots showing the Tomcats from outside.

Hell yeah! With that funky sloped cartridge that never wants to come out of the system.
@soopahsoopah That's part of the game, he didn't activate any sort of feature for it.
Man... After Burner Climax comes out soon and it looks great!
I played this, or the first one on the sit-in arcade machine. Awesome experience!
'The Final Countdown' was awesome.
Really awesome game. I have played many times and never got bored. Btw nice review, it's informative and well said.
I had no idea Sega owned an Aircraft Carrier!
It's just the theme song. Our great reviewer Mark made it.
my childhood in one video . maaaaaan when i played this on my sega master system 2 , i was blown away with how fast it was and responsive . the music is just an other master piece .
i just got this game for my collection its awesome

Afterburner 2 can be found in the game "Shenmue 2" Along with Outrun, Hang on, and Space Harrier.
The 18 people who disliked this went right into the danger zone!
all hail a sega classic!
music = AWESOME!
Freakin awesome review.
i do like the FPS and graph for the time !
LOVED the arcade version when I was little. Too bad the Genesis didn't have a flight stick controller.
This is an excellent game, and for european collectors, this game works on pal consoles too, so you can get the ntsc version, it will work even with trms consoles. :D
Awesome video. I got my current copy of this game for free.
Wish I still had the 32x port of one from High School. But time to revisit this again.
This game looks great with an RGB Scart cable from retrogamingcables
You should try finding a scart RGB cable for your genesis. You might need a RGB -> Component converter, but the quality is significantly better than even S-Video.
You should review Afterburner Complete for the 32X. It is arcade perfect and a total blast to play.
I miss this game because i had it before i sold my genisis. I wgot a litle sad the other day when i found a couple of sega games in a box
That is True, THE FINAL COUNT DOWN OF 1980 WAS THE FIRST F-14 TOMCAT MOVIE
So the F-14 Tomcat inspired TWO feature films, an anime franchise, AND a Sega video game series! Whodathunkit?
Omega Boost always did remind me of Afterburner
GRUMMAN F-14 TOMCAT, I LOVE IT
Looks fun!
help does not work the infinite continues cheat Left, Left, Left, B, B, B, C, C, C, and Start at the title screen????
Absolutely, the 32X version was pretty close to being arcade perfect... it really was one of the better home ports of this game... though I think there may have also been an arcade perfect port on the Saturn as well (which is kinda rare, I think?)... and Shenmue II had a playable version of the game too, in one of the arcades. Ahh, I wasn't aware of that, thanks...
Could you make a review about the master system and ps3 versions?
There is an After Burner for the PSP, so I think you should review it. Cuz it's cool!!
I love this game :D
You can also find this as a mini game in Shenmue 2. I think you guys need to review Shenmue 2
i remember this game it awesome u.u old times well good times
Lol, Haven't seen "Final Countdown" since I was a kid.
this was fun, but i liked Space Harrier more, it was in the "fantasy zone"
:)
@nooblet911
that might be but who owns a 32x actually for the 4 or 5 okay to good games?.Saturn version is the best one, same for outrun.
yes, it is actually an F-15E Eagle
Ah, now that I'm old enough to know that the word exists (I played this when I was like 3), it sounds like the enemies screaming "FUCK!" whenever they die.
*puts it on the list*

It is not to late to change ^^
Sega did a much better job here then Space Harrier II and Super Thunder Blade on the Genesis.
you are Awesome classic man
I always thought they were saying "fuck"
When I ran into the arcade machine in '88, I thought the "avionics voice" was saying "fire, fi-fire, fucking fire" , having seen "Top Gun" two years earlier.
a bit better that the master system version because it's a bit smoother
the one on the cartridge is an eagle and the one he is flying is an f14
@Troyman021 Granted it's on the default config but you can (and should) turn it off in the options. I despise autofire on general principle as it basically cheapens the game.
i ment the one onthe cover is an F-15
Of course the one in the game is an F-14
sorry for the misunderstanding
If you like this, you really need to get your hands on the 32X version, called After Burner Complete. It KILLS this version graphically and sound wise, and doesn't make your guns fire constantly.
+5 passive aggression, level up!

I agree, CenturyGamer.
It's Phelios by Namco.
Yes there were a few good 32X games, Doom wasn't really one of them, it was very stripped down from the other versions.
The others yeah definitely.
I agree. 100%
"FIRE!!!"
Agreed!
@soopahsoopah Ahh I wasn't aware of that, thanks...
that some good musik
You should review Outrun 2 Online for the Xbox360!!!
No, it's not a joke. I don't know why I got two thumbs down. Perhaps I was given the wrong information in replying to you comment. If so, then I apologize.
It is hard as hell but shure is a fun game.
The difference is, this game is fun for a short burst of excitement. F22 is only good for long sit-down plays, and even then it's pretty boring.
Look at he comments he made on his Welcome Home video. I think he's always aggressive lol
As great as this looks, it's a shame SEGA didnt come out with a SEGA CD version which could handle scaling and rotation way better than the Genesis ever could.
But, it did get released on the 32X.

yeah and its super ironic since he has winne the pooh characters as his image.
ps. hahaha nice applooza pic.
