    Great job!! Use weather stripping around the edge, it should stop the light bleeding where the plexi meets the wood edge. Looks GREAT!

      NotWatching666999 I noticed that too - if he'd put the vinyl on the acrylic before he put on the trim that held it, that would not have been an issue at all.

    You should have used aluminum extrusions for your box and aluminum sheet for the back. Would have been 1/3 the weight.

    it would be much cheaper, though the time to make would be 5x wiring LED's up yourself. 500 @ $12 for a fixed color scheme. nice video! I'm sure you're happy with the savings and how it looks

    How much do you charge for your time? Plus the $1000 in materials. Don't forget the UL label to make it legal!

    Did you apply lettering on underside of plexiglass or outside?

    hi, this tutorial is good, but the sign needs better finishing, and technology u used with less is bad, u should put led's on the bottom, and furthermore u need to put vinyl on plexiglas before applying on the board, then you won't have those lines on the corners lighting in the front that clearly sees. in my country this kind of box would not be good job and client won't pay for it. No hard feelings, just making some correction for your further job :)

    how do you make signs that you hang up on above your building? like that same concept except just not neon changing colors? please help

    • @jessvagnar4957
      @jessvagnar4957 8 лет назад +2

      +Angelo Taracena lol, I think it's interesting how people can't problem solve, but we all have our gifts, no?You can make the letters out of wood or bent metal (Since you're probably DIY and don't have many tools I would suggest blocky letters so they're easy to make. Be sure that whatever material you use is weather proof, pressure treated woods painted with outdoor paint).Then depending on the colors you want, you can go the traditional route of using thin colored inserts backed by white lights. Or you can use a frosted plexiglass cover and RBGs (be careful, if you don't use enough or make the edges lipped to hide the LED's you'll see little dots). I would suggest fitting the frosted plexiglass (CNC cut with a cheap machine, or cut by router using the wood as a guide) and then fitting the plexiglass into the letter AND SEALING THE LETTER AROUND THE PLEXIGLASS. You can do that by completing say, the whole way around the S with the plexiglass inside, then push the plexiglass up and leave the backing open. If you do it this way you still get access to the lights in case something breaks, but light will shine out the back too giving you this halo effect. You can modify this various ways based on time, skill, and how much care you want. Something to watch out for is how many LED's you line the letters with. I think you'd want quite a few wrappings so the color is super bright, I hate those dull red signs that are super old, it just doesn't look sharp. I personally would do a few things, make a black wood lip on the outside and inside of the plexiglass, the glass will be a pain to replace if it breaks, but that would rarely happen. This lip would hide the LED's individually at night, but also provide a black exterior line for the lit plexiglass during the day!!! Then I would build the SAME back plate that is inset from the lettering. I would drill a hole for the wiring and then put a reflective surface on the inside (So the inside backplate isn't just black, it's a mirror like finish of some cheap reflective backing so more LED light goes out the front). Then I would take an extra strip of BRIGHT white leds and line the EXTERIOR BACKING of the letter. So I can change the color of the letters, but it will always have this gorgeous white halo effect behind it. I would wire the electricity carefully so wires aren't exposed (Ugly line of wires avoided) by either making a decorative support trim for the letters, or running the electrical into the wall. Then I would get really technical and probably use a radio controller for the lights, but that's an electronics project. I would be able to use a radio inside the store without worrying about IR signals reaching the letters. Also be sure that using LED signs are legal for storefronts in your area, or if they are allowed to actively change colors or flash. Well, I wrote a lot, but I want to find a reason to make a sign now! I'll respond if you reply with any questions, have a good day!

    Only the letters lite up. Didn't have to put the lights around the outside of the box, just behind the letters. Could have gone with less lights and a cheaper power supply.
    If you paid someone to put the graphics on for you, ask for your money back.

      If the LED's were directly behind the letters, you would not have even illumination.... the light is reflected inside the light box, evening it.
