A real, true ambassador for the airgun community, love the vids, keep em coming!! 💪🇬🇧
The most elusive pest is that center of a paper target.
I've got the Cowboy repeater. Lots of fun.
The only way I would use it for pest control would be using it as a club.
Here in the states : Such Co2 pistols as The Crosman Vigilante or The Pumpers and break barrels like The Crosman 1377 or Benjamin Trail Mark 2 are commonly used to dispatch pigeons, barn rats , crows , and even opossums at close range .
We take the extra power and feet per second , for granted .
I get frustrated for our overseas cousin's that are so restricted .😒
Having to obtain a certificate to own an air rifle or pistol is condescending at best .
I love the videos , I'm looking for something very quiet & not overpowered for my backyard , over 4pumps & the crosman 760 & the .22 benjamin are both loud , my privacy fence is an echo chamber.🤫
( My neighbors dog food attracts rats , too fat to climb the fence , so they dig under .
I fixed a cement block backstop covered in sand where they enter my yard and make a small cardboard hide so they slow down..
It's just not quiet enough.
( Suppressor is a bad word to law enforcement however )
@@tomwebber4015 we don’t need the certificate to own a pistol. We can own any air pistol we want without a license because pistols above 6ftlb (not sure what that equates to in joules or FPS) are outright banned. It’s a shambles over here with some of the laws although same could be said for US 😅. I would prefer the freedom of your country but it would be nice if it were possible to get a mix of freedom and safety/security
@@tomwebber4015 Umarex Fusion is a great choice for stealthy pest control, it’s a co2 rifle which comes with a 10 round mag (pellets). It’s extremely quite when shooting lol and I have neighbors on all sides of my house and I haven’t had a complaint.
The Crosman 1377 that usually sells in the UK is the Canadian version designated 1377c, which I think limits it to about 4.5 ft pounds. But we can legally have the US version as I think that shoots at just under 6ft pounds maximum, but for some reason its always the Canadian model on sale. Luckily you can easily buy the parts required to turn a 1377c into a proper 1377.
i regularly use my cp2 .22 for pigeons and rats. as long as your within 15ft they are lethal . a 5.5 ftlb pistol in the right flavour , ie an smk cp2 is plenty enough power and with magazine the odd follow up shot is no problem, i use my cp2 over my rifle alot of the time
Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 .177 cal with the Utg 3-9x40 AO scopw it absolutely drills gophers, while being surprisingly quiet and really accurate. I Highly Recommend getting the 10 for 10 test at Pyramid Air to make sure you're not getting a faulty gun.
Only done this "pest control" thing once with a pistol. And that was with an old Gamo pellet co2 revolver with a built-in laser. Did the job well. A small mouse that had been already trapped (gotten stuck by it's leg). Shot from 1-1.5m away (or close actually) - so it was an easy and clean job. Was stuck in a tight spot - and therefore had to be put down before could get it away from it here and dispose it. Sad for the lil mouse though..
I do not recommend co2 replicas for pesting though. I just had by chance fixed, tested and sighted in my dad's old Gamo revolver the night before I stubled upon this poor trapped mouse, so I knew there was plenty of co2 left in it. Mostly I just shoot paper for accuracy.
Thanks Andy. I am a subscriber to your RUclips channel and always enjoy you content. I totally agree with your views on using pistols for pest control. Fortunately, I live in the US and am not restricted to the 12 FPE level. My purpose when I first entered into the this world of airguns was to protect my bluebirds from harassing sparrows. I have three nesting boxes at 25 to 35 yards from the house. Initially, I found that I was not accurate enough with my first airgun, a Diana 34 in .22 caliber. Later, I invested in a Gamo Urban (rebranded BSA Bucceneer) for this purpose. I found it to be very accurate and capable of 1/2" groups at 35 yards. It also has 22 to 24 FPE at the muzzle. I have taken many sparrows, starlings, and a couple of woodchucks with the Urban. It's a great pesting tool. The reason I chose the Urban was due to it's linage in the UK. It's topped with a UTG 3-12x44SWAT compact scope and I found the JSB 18.13g pellets to be the most accurate of those I've tested. Thanks for the continued great reviews. 😎
Geo from USA
Chris Packam’s pets - as a fellow Brit this made me laugh.
Airguns for pest control yes most definitely as long as you are realistic about their limitations (and your limitations) I'm using both sub 12fpe and a 34fp rifles pistols for me no practice then practice some more and when you're quite sure you've got it practise some more please respect your quarry and by doing so respect yourself. Stay safe and well regards from an old shooter
Absolutely. You owe it to the prey and to yourself to put plenty on paper before you start shooting live and you need to keep on doing it. Even a week away from your gun will have an effect on accuracy. There is nothing that upsets me more than failing to make a clean shot.
Great and clear as always Andy. One small bug bear I have: I used to do quite a lot of pest control/shooting for the pot using my Air Arms s410 carbine. Fine tool for the job etc. but a bit on the heavy side once scoped and with a bi-pod. From practical, in the field and on the range experiance, the MOST effective pellets I found, for that rifle and application anyway, was Bisley pest control. These flat headed wad-cutter type pellets were both accurate and carried through the stopping power far better than anything else. I never seem to see these type of pellets either reviewed or recommended despite, as I say, finding them to be superior for actual dispatching. Always love the channel by the way - just struggling with whether to save and try to buy anything other than a Leishy 2, go for a Leishy 1 (more available but definitely a compromise, albeit with the benefit of two calibers or more) or the HW100 bullpup. Hard choice! All the best and please keep up the great and informative work that you do. Dave
Happy Friday everyone!
Well, happy Friday to you too:)
If it was"Thursday " I'd sing " HAPPY THURSDAY TO YOU, "
( Like happy birthday , but for Thursday ,)🙄😄
Hi Andy and Mrs AAR. This takes me back to the time when you’re program began with the oral and written introduction of what this program was and wasn’t about. It pleases me to see you explain to some what these airguns are and are not capable of. I frown on the use of inadequate weapons used as pest control. Thanks for the education.
Your friend in Phoenix
Rudy
Very useful and 👍
We had a rat problem that last week, I decided to move from target shooting to pest control.
All sorted now. 👍
What gun did you use?
In south africa you can have up to a 50 cal airgun without a license and or 6.72 cal in rifles that put out up to 60 pounds per square inch impact
Interesting! very informative. Thank you.
In Canada 4.2 foot pounds. 500 feet per second. Anything more than that need Firearms license.
Great video as usual 👍, I found the most effective way of seeing off small vermin with a BB gun is to throw the co2 replica glock at the little buggers
Not that I do any shooting of small critters just target and plinking for me, but my go to gun would be slightly modified pcp converted cp2, love it
As always andy - the voice of reason, knowledge and entertainment. Keep up the good work lad 👍
The highlight of your Vlogs for me are many of the gems you intertwine in the great information. "Knock the skin off rice pudding", is one that I particularly liked. I won't bore you with repeating the others that were equally as good. Just know I'm following and listening.
I have a Milbro Explorer .22 which is a bit on the heavy side but litterally knocks rats over by the side of our bowling green. They're so used to people walking up and down that I can get quite close to them. I've even got a few with my fishing catapult and glass marbles.
On the farm I worked on years ago. I used my Weihrauch 77k. 1.77 pellets. 4=12 x 50 scope. And took out rabbits at 60 yds..
Thanks Andy I’ve got a gamo phox.22 and I tried the Hades pellets in it and it loves them once I zeroed my scope in I got all 10 shots in the target at 35yards the size of a 1p coin. So thanks very much and please keep making the shows. 👍🏻👍🏻🐇
Hi Kevin, I was thinking of a gamo phox for rabbit but mainly rats, but unsure to go for .177 or .22...What's your thoughts?
Hi Andy great to see a video on pest control with out seeing the quarry having its head blown off, the theory behind pest control is a must before anyone goes off for the hunt
All i do with my pcp is shooting spinners and rats.. Tried almost every pellet there is and JSB Hades is absolutely the best. No running away after getting smacked by Hades
I found when I switched from RWS Super field .22 to Diablo Exacts accuracy dropped by 30% and they took forever to dial in. Gone back to the RWS.
I must be getting old, look forward to your weekly post! Funny story, I purchased a hw45 during lockdown to deal with some close range rats in the garden. Only to find out a few days later that one of the neighbours had called in pest control. The only rats I have seen since are poisoned ones. Still it's a nice gun, and at least my beer cans have a second use now. Great show keep up the good work
Appreciate you are constrained for time, but along with power and accuracy, the length and weight of the rifle to be used? Horses for courses, a light weight carbine in farm buildings, a heavier full length rifle from a rested position in a hide? I'm zeroed at 75 feet and 100 is a mil dot and a half in .177, feathered targets. In a barn, zeroed to 50feet, shorter barrel better suited to elevated targets in the rafters. Choosing the gun best suited to the environment it's primarily being used in?
How ay Ft lbs would you need for MPs
this is exactly the video I was looking for!!!
thank you very much Andy, stay safe and happy shooting!
I’ve only been subscribed for a few months, but I now find myself waiting for Friday to come round for the latest review. Well done Andy, another informative, interesting, humorous and well balanced episode. Well done 👏👏👏
I have the Gun(AAs410 carbine) you have on the table and she has done all iv ever needed
👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🎣🤞✌️
An excellent and informative video well done. But it also maybe worth adding a footnote or another video on what you can not target
I.e. a domestic moggy.
After all it's one of the reasons air gunning gets bad press.
Hi andy it was great to see you at vector on Wednesday the moderator my dad bought is spot on he is very happy with it big thanks.. dave.
Was going to pass out for the night then this popped up.. I can hang for this for sure. O and happy Friday to you too Great job 👍👌👏
Brilliant contribution to giving clear advice
Andy your channel is simply Incredible
I'm new to this hobby. This is a great channel. I'm learning a lot. Thank you!
Hi Andy,
As usual mate, a great video..
As a pest control tech I was very impressed with the way you put the point across.
I've unfortunately come across one man band cowboys using replica pistols that just makes them look foolish or at worst cause damage without a clean kill.
Personally I use, where there is no other option my phox 2 rifle and for a close up clean dispatch my CP2 pistol.
Do it safe and humanely or not at all.
Stay safe and healthy everyone.
Best off using a phased plasma rifle for this kinda thing. Something in the 40 watt range I'd say, right?
For the hands on approach, definitely.
I like to lace the areas with a few mines and a couple of claymores.
Job done, head home for the day.
Hey, just what you see pal.
Good old Mk3 standard pattern lasrifle should suffice.
Loved the u-turn, mmmmbarrel 😆
Joking aside, another great and informative video, cheers Andy. 👍
Another great vid thanks. Brought myself a Hammerli for rabbit stalking and it is very good out to 30m for the job, all PCPs require a firearms license in NZ. I would love to see a review of the Hades in .177... maybe in the M2 hint hint. Cheers
Love that review and I've got a little gem of a co2 rifle that I know you haven't done too much of a review on the umarex fusion 2 I use for small pasting and hunting its wonderfully pleasant for what I want as an affordable air gun and accuracy along with its price point it is well built and sturdy but everything you said you are right on the mark and this is coming from an American vet love your channel bud keep it up
I used the Air Arms s310, a superb rifle.
Co2 or break barrel BB & Pellet pistols are useful for pest control , if there are flies on the target ! and You can hit them . Power required ? Nicely explained there Andy .
Very informative video again andy, people do need educating regarding this subject. If you are a parent and your wippersnappers do partake in a bit of shooting on your property and dont watch videos like this, then its up to the parent to educate them. I would happily use a pistol for pest control around the 10 metres or less mark. However if you want to reach out a bit further and are confident in yourself with shot placement and your pistols performance, then depending on quarry ammo, weather conditions etc then 15metre kills are certainly achievable. Any further then you need to step into rifle territory. All the best from lancashire
Excellent presentation
Andy, I’d be very interested to see you review and test a sub 12 ft/lb .25 Cal rifle at some point if you could? These can be very effective at short range pest control. Thanks and keep up the great videos 👍
I agree. I have FAC 25cal 86ftlb, can't decide between 30/35cal though 😂
Pedes Read the high powered air rifles can be very useful but you are touching on .22rf territory at that power. The sub 12 ft/lb in any Calibre has many uses especially round barns. The .25 in sub 12 has amazing hitting power still. It also retains a lot of its energy for longer range shots as well but needs practice for the massive loop it creates
0:45 - you forgot "bunny bopping" 😅
nice like always, we can't have replica's, but we have no power limit here in the nethetlands,, like replica but more power is better
We can have replica's with an airsoft license.
@@Romin.777 indeed we can have airsoft, but an airgun for pest controll cant be a replica
Great video!
Excellent advice Andy, very well considered.
Pest control... .177 - FWB300 (chipmunks, sparrows); .22 - HW100 FAC (grackles, starlings, squirrels); .25 - FX Royale 500 (groundhogs, raccoons, porcupines) and 30-06 for anything bigger :)
Excellent video💯 all explained clearly humane and ethical
I do a lot of pesting, my main is .410 Hushpower. However, l love setting up with a .177 Scorpion PCP for a rabbit session. Its as the video rightly states, power, range and being sensible. Forty-five yards is about my limit with a sub 12lb. And for rabbit/pigeon, it's all you need. A half-decent BSA Basics scope, silencer and ammo that the gun likes is the key. Also fieldcraft and more importantly, accuracy, practice on paper before attempting to shoot live quarry. I actually laugh at people with all this expensive night vision and high tech gear, just get your bum out at dawn and dusk, save on butchers bills for meat too. Pistols can have a role in dispatching trapped rats at very close range, better than drowning or gassing.
Great video and a perfect easy explanation of what you can and cant use. As I remember you are a believer that 6ftlb on impact is the small pest clean dispatch power. Thus a 12ftlb will have a max range of about 50-60m depending on pellet. With more and more Hi Power air rifles in the UK, users need a slight reminder as to how far they will go and how much energy it still carries. Slugs are a different world and we dont have unlimited space alas here, they can still easily carry over 50%+ of its energy at 200m. Always know your backdrop and that your shot will be safe. I know I'm being a granny and sucking eggs for most.
I'd be more worried about accuracy over 100m. I'm sure lots of people can shoot that well but not me freehanding it.
Scott Tuttle that’s the point if you can’t guarantee you hit it you have got to know where it’s going to go. No matter how good a shot we can all miss at any range despite what RUclips seems to tell us.
So glad I live in the USA! 😎
My break barrel .22 Gamo Wildcat Whisper has plenty of power for accurate, backyard shooting. 😆
same here with my benjamin quest 22. you can sure tell the difference cocking it after a while compared to a regular 177.
Been thinking of getting the Webley VMX D-RAM (.22 cal). But I'm not sure yet.
Fantastic review Andy. Exactly what I have been waiting for mate. Brilliant. 💯💯💯🌋🤠
Took out a possum last night with Umarex Morph 3X from about 12yds. I am looking for more power to hit squirrels from distance.
Good weekend to everyone Happy shooting from me here in 🇩🇰
Sorry to call you out, ( 5.45 )" pistols struggling to take the skin off a rice pudding at any farther range", on an earlier video I've quoted you saying you've killed quarry out to 30m with that pp700. 🤔. I do agree though, decent rifle with scope 10+ftlb is best by far, I do think though a capable pistol such as pp700 or cp2 in the hands of a reasonable shooter can be a viable option in certain circumstances, up to 10m ideally barn /under garden shed type of situation. My current rifle of choice AA s410 I bought in .177 for longer range capabilities but most shooting with it takes place within 15m. Rabbits at 40m far easier with .22lr. especially if your in a windy spot. would have been as well sticking with previous .22 air arms. 👍
Hi Andy
Going to start calling you THE KNOWLEDGE.
Brilliant as always bud, keep em coming
Stay safe.
Happy Friday Andy, whot. a great subject to cover. Right tools for the job. Great to remind us, the purpose of whot we might do... Most pistols /rifles for rats, started with Crossman 2250. Gas bulb powered. Lot's of fab information today Andy... Have a super weekend. Stay safe... Cheers Simon from York England 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Simon. Stay safe. Andy & Mrs AAR
Great info again. Just received my new vector scope based on the review on here.
As I got older I found myself more tolerant of most rodents , live and let live is more the way I think ! Still love my PCP’s and springers for plinking and marvel at their accuracy !
I thougfht I was doing the same and then I brought a sack of dog food in from the garage with four rats living in it...
The older you get, the more likely it is that you will succumb to a disease these vermin carry. You are tolerating a higher risk of dying.
Not trying to be mean but if you had a pack rat infestation on your property you'd think differently
@@thisolddog2259 you didn’t read carefully , I said most rodents ! We have squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, opossum , mice and rats ! Rats & mice at my house I do not tolerate , they damage to much ! I have chickens so I trap the raccoons and opossum in a humane trap and let them free out in the country ! We have a fence around our garden so the rabbits aren’t a problem ! The squirrels can be a problem sometime but the hawks do a good job of keeping the population down !
If you knew what sparrows do to nesting bluebirds you might change you mind. My main use of an Uban PCP is to protect the nesting bluebirds in spring. We had two successful fledgings this year due to not having been harassed by sparrows or starlings. The sparrows also drive the native song birds away.
9.36 was that pets...lol
Styled it out but somewhere there’s a dead parakeet in Milton Keynes
Good balanced information. A bit more on prices maybe?
Great video Andy taught me a lot.
We are using 30 cal a lot over here there is a comption shotter
Hello sir,
प्रणाम (Pranam)
I am from India. I watch your videos regularly and like the way you explain things. In India only .177 caliber Airguns with max power level of 15 Foot- pounds or 20 Joules are allowed for free purchase. Any thing above this I.e. a .22 caliber or more power level will require licence, which is nearly impossible to get. Although any kind of Hunting is illegal in India but I want to know how much energy will a average .177 pellet (9 to 14 grains) retain at different distance. We do get PCPs rifles like Marauder and springers like Diana 350 magnum with restricted power level.
Will love to hear from you soon.
The FX hybrid slugs are supposed to be for FAC rated air rifles, but I used to be my sub 12 foot-pound and quite comfortably. Kill rabbits up to 30 yards.
Thanks Andy, really useful
Amazing to see the difference between UK and USA, in USA some people shot rodents in their farms with a 36 gauge shotgun, and in UK people are usually discussing the possession of airguns for defense and/or pest control.
A mate of mine shot a rat with a 410. he live in an old cottage the walls were wattle and daube couple of hundred years old . He blew hole in the wall
@@geoffpriestley7001 If he wanted a window, there were better ways to cut the wall hahaha
Just kidding, but good to know, because it's not that common to shot rats inside buildings with guns, and even the ricochet may be too dangerous.
@@vigilantesdobrasil some of the stuff you do then think about it later crazy
Good basic intro. Would have been nice to hear something about which the limits of this or that caliber for this or that pest, as in, when should you think about using a .22 over a .177, etc.
Great informative video, thanks 👍
Do you have a video of the brands of pcp and spring pellet rifles that’s the best. There’s just so many companies and brands out there. Can you help us with this problem here in the USA. Thanks.
Gamo is great 22cal
Which airgun brand's have got the highest shot count per fill with highest velocity and the most durable? 😀
Daisy Powerline actually works pretty good for chipmunks squirrels and certain birds
At 66 years old, I have used a legal limit air rifle since I was 9 years old. Along with shotguns and rifles for hunting and pest control. At the end of the day, it's horses for courses, I have probably shot twice as many rabbits with air rifles as I have with shotguns.
You have a great skill of keeping things interesting
I use airguns for pest control by telling friends and family that I use the inside of the front door as a target backstop. Stops them (pests) from dropping by unannounced. As for outside wildlife, they are safe from me. I only buy pistols for inside paper and can shooting.
beautiful PCP
I've had air guns in one form or another since I was 9 (im 31 now) and I have only ever shot two small house mice in the kitchen with an Umarex C02 Walther CP88 and another a few years later with a Beeman P17 2004E. Not the tools for the job, but from 5 meters on such small rodents they were sufficient. I own two Walther LGU in 177, and a Gamo CFX in .22. All scoped and zeroed perfectly, but I just have never wanted to commit to hunting quarry.
I'm not sure how I would feel about it, the mice didn't bother me too much as we had a genuine rodent problem in the house and the humane trap we bought turned out to not be humane at all when we forgot about it and a poor mouse starved to death. But I do eat meat, and I know that sadly those animals are not always reared or slaughtered in a humane fashion. But for now it's still not something that I am sure is for me.
But if you are going to do it, then doing it properly is the way to do it, like this video explains. Sadly too many creatures have suffered from idiots with a £30 rifle and or no idea. At the minimum you need a Hatsan 900x or Remington Pest Control type of rifle with a £40 scope. Or up close indoors you need a Crosman Ratcatcher or a CP2.
Can you do a Crosman armada review ?
UK citizens with an FAC, are they allowed to own a semi/fully automatic air rifle like the LCS Air Arms SK-19? BTW, great subject and video. God Bless.
true semi auto is not allowed other than in a .22lr and .22WMR rimfire. . A semi auto that fires from the MAGAZINE is allowed in airguns as it does not load it into the barrel. the steyr semi autos are allowed in the UK from Steyr UK Quote
Maximum safety: The pellet is shot directly out of the magazine. No pellet remains in the barrel when magazine removed.
As the pellet is fired from the magazine then its not a true semi auto in the sense of loading one into the barrel .
I was shooting peanuts at 25 meters with my 4.5 carbine for one month. After that, shooting rats was too easy for me.
I also live in the UK and my gun has been modified and is measured at 18 ft lbs even tho its classed as a firearm now I don't see any reason to reduce the power, as it's a million to 1 chance of the police actually taking your gun away to test with a chronograph.
But if they do you'll find yourself at Her Majesty's Pleasure. Worth taking a risk?
What gun do you have
I want an 18fp but I most likely won’t be allowed a fac because this country is a joke
tho .22 cal in a pistol or rifle is best with a min of 6 fpe. i use .22 cal non pal or sub 500 fps airguns for small game hunting and pest control out to 30 yards with clean kill shots so i dont see any reason to have any thing hi powered unless your out past 40 yards ,, pistols lacks accuracy past 15 to 20 yards and lose power to it really carries on the gun..i would use a pistol for close stuff with in 10 meters/11 yards but a rifle at 10 to 40 yards due to a bit more speed thats avaiable as well as more accuracy from a rifle.. .177 cal airrifles that are under 500 fps are ok for small pest birds at 10 to 15 yards and i have seen guys get rabbits with .177 cal but i dont see how at under 500 fps but over 500 fps it can be done with 600 + fps but they are still weaker then a sub 500 fps .22 cal till you break over the speeds in the .177 to be stronger but then that has its own things to deal with ..
I like birds 🐦
Change of perspective... I thought anyone considering a CO2 pistol for "pest control" was thinking about the case of having to shoot mice inside their home if poison and traps failed and mice started running around at the middle of the night. For me, the realistic range would be between 1 to 4 meters, so we are operating at very close to V0. In such scenario any air rifle would be just unnecessarily bulky and especially a scoped rifle would be useless. Shooting a mouse indoors with a .177 CO2 steel ball is about as extreme as I'm going to get - the Luger replica or a 2240 has got to do. There's still slight potential floor and furniture damage, but at least it's somewhat tolerable. It's still dangerous even if there are no other people around - remember eye protection.
Obviously outdoors a higher powered airgun or a .22LR rifle would be preferred, and that's in case "pest control" even then means really small animals.
Andy I think you should do a review on the Barra 009 full auto bb pistol

rabbits must be controlled by law by landowners www.gov.uk/guidance/rabbits-how-to-control-numbers Quote Your responsibility to control rabbit numbers
You must obey the law to control rabbit numbers on your property or land. England (excluding the City of London and Isles of Sicily) was declared a rabbit clearance area under the Pests Act 1954.
You must control rabbits on your land in this area. If this is not possible you must stop them causing damage to adjoining crops by putting up rabbit proof fencing. If you don’t take action the Secretary of State for the Environment can enforce control and prosecute if this action is not taken.
Wild birds are controlled under the General license www.gov.uk/government/collections/general-licences-for-wildlife-management#birds

Hi there and a very informative video. You mention the Hades which is what made my ears prick up. I use them in a sub 12ft/lb .22 air rifle and have taken out Mink at 35 yards with single headshots, while others have said they're no good with sub 12's. What's your thoughts?
