Somehow I managed to make it until today without knowing that Tom Verlaine wrote this (despite owning this album on vinyl for ages). R.I.P. Tom Verlaine, one of the greats.
I was shocked also. Turns out Bowie was a fan of Television. Ironically, Brian Eno did a recording session with them in 1974, but Island records passed on it. Verlaine also was very unhappy with the final mix. I suppose Eno wasn’t experienced enough to produce other bands at the time.
Well I walked in the pouring rain And I heard a voice that cries "It's all in vain" The voice of doom was shining in my room I just need one day somewhere far away Lord, I just need one day Well, I've been breaking these rocks And cutting this hay Yes, I'll be breaking these rocks It was my price to pay Oh, the river's so muddy, but it may come clear And I know too well what's keeping me here I'm just the slave of a burning ray Oh, give me the night, I can't take another sight Please, please give me the night Been breaking this rocks And cutting this hay Yes, I'll be breaking these rocks What's my price to pay? Sun keeps beating down on me, wall's a mile high Up in the tower they're watching me, hoping I'm gonna die I won't be breaking no rocks (I won't be breaking no rocks) I said, I won't be breaking no rocks (I won't be breaking no rocks) Will pardon them (I won't be breaking no rocks) Oh-oh-oh-oh (I won't be breaking no rocks) (I won't be breaking no rocks) When the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes, when the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes When the kingdom comes
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT SONG needs to be covered and re released the background vocals are amazing and it has a very cool soul to it they should put out a long lost BOWIE SONG TRIBUTE ALBUM FRIPP is at his best here.
Had a listen to the Tom Verlaine version and it sounds like Chrissey Hynde having a stroke. This by Bowie wouldn't be a favourite of mine, but it's more than just a lot better than the original.
@@williamdougan9769 👍 Philip k dick , Aldous Huxley , Georges Orwell great visionary ! and a film a hygienic World 🤢 ( welcome to gattaca ) and blade runner .
Good cover david rip love you your voc chops are better than toms but tom is Yom plus you had back ground overdubs god bless you you did very well on this. 🌵👀🌵
Never liked this album, ushered in the 80s when even he conceded were fallow years. His covers are often overwrought this has everything bar the kitchen sink and the dreaded giant drum sound that was new on ' Low ' then quickly became a cliche.
Absolute gem of a cover.Out of his 26 studio albums he does a cover on at least half of them and only my second opinion but this is the best of the lot.
His vocals on this and several other tracks on Scary Monsters reminds me of the Ronettes in a great way. I wonder if he wasn't pulling from that. It seems to line up with that idea of the 20 year cycle of pop culture, i.e. reinventing something beloved from childhood as an adult. Just a thought. Love this whole album!
I always thought that this song would influence singing styles of the following years after...sadly it didn't become the big trend i thought it would..
Rob G you should listen to the original version by tom verlaine its on his first solo album after he left televison it clearly had a big influence on bowie with this album

Riposa in pace signore Verlaine ❤️

@@troutmask6800 I did not know Eno worked with Television that early! Wild.
Me too! Just found out a few days… Great song. R.I.P TV !

I seriously LOVE this artist!! Thank You for making feel not so alone!! Thank You David⚡️
Excellent cover!!!
@ jeff baker Bowie's cover is of Tom Verlaine/Television original, it's on youtube...
Severely underrated Bowie album Scary Monsters is. My personal favorite of his. The energy and atmosphere of that album is just amazing.
drums killen it
I love Tom's version equally. Bowie does a great job, and Robert is fantastic. However Tom is understated, and just as powerful.
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT SONG needs to be covered and re released

FRIPP is at his best here.
I like them both.

Nice hair bowie has a more definite vocal than tom.a lil lower end

David Bowie read George Orwell and other visionarie's writings.

Great Tom Verlaine song here. The original is better.

I prefer verlaines vocals bowie could of sang this much better.
A great song by Tom but Bowie absolutely brings it to life.
Indeed. And Robert Fripps guitar riffs are smoking.
Tom Verlaine of Television indeed penned this song for his self totled debut album in 1979!
As much as I love Television, I do not like Toms version. Bowie definitely brings it to life.
Agreed. love Tom's songs though as well.
@@danw1374 I sometimes wonder if they influenced each other; David and R
obert , in an artistic manner. i.e. King Crimson?

Powerhouse track ! Band is just smoking on this.

Just a thought. Love this whole album!
Maybe, who knows, I'm sure he was into male/female soul singing in the 50s and 60. Unrelated but sleigh ride is the only christmas song i like :)
I can hear it a little
Powerful and magical. Extreme
Would love to have heard verlaine play guitar on this track
Pass tha blunt ya no wat
I always thought that this song would influence singing styles of the following years after...sadly it didn't become the big trend i thought it would..
me too
Rob I agree. I loved Bowie from A to Z and think this is his best ever vocal.
Rob G you should listen to the original version by tom verlaine its on his first solo album after he left televison it clearly had a big influence on bowie with this album
love the drums here
LOVE THIS TRACK i had forgotten it
Боуи - навсегда!
Great song 🎵 like all the rest! RIP David 🙏
This cover song is better than the original
His performance on teenage wildlfe is masterful. This one not so much.
Where does this rank on the underrated Bowie songs list? Pretty damn high I would imagine.
Top 5
Written by Tom Verlaine, though. And improved on by Bowie and Visconti, backinvocals and all...
not really this isnt even top 5 on this album
Un artiste que j'ai toujours estimé parmi mes favoris.
EL MEJOR DISCO DEL MUNDO
Greatness.
David Bowie wrote this in the 80s and here we are with this Trump administration!
@@connienewman1343 - he didn't write it but I know what you mean.
Beautiful song....
Great. The Verlaine original too.
