- UV-K5, opened up via a hacked firmware. Some horrible harmonics showing now in different bands like reported by many - It also allowes AM tx now, but does it really tx in AM?

Hi - the firmware does not do AM transmission, sorry about the misconception. The chip inside the radio is FM-only so even the AM reception out of the factory is done by some kind of "hack." There is also a GIGANTIC warning about harmonics, that I hope stops anyone from thinking that they could ever make a functional radio outside the band limits without hardware modifications, but maybe I was wrong. If there is anything else I need to put on the GitHub repository to be compliant, please do let me know.

I agree, if the option to load a hacked firmware to block TX in 18-108MHz Range I would install it. Unfortunately its is all open, consider at least not to load a AM RX version up to 850MHz. You can still restrict your device by selecting FCC or EU in the Hidden menu. TX button + Power-on.
Can the hardware be modified??

uvk5 playground has a firmware s meter, band scope, text chat, even a game
Is there any other way to do this outside of a PC? Anyone make an iPhone app to flash the firmware with? Browsers on phones and tablets won't let it work. But for some reason my PC FLAT refuses to let me flash it.
I am surprised by your findings. ¨Not bad¨, right? I have the newer UV-K5(8) model and loaded the same upgraded *26 Firmware with extended range in TX/RX except 630 to 850MHz. De rest goes ip to 1.3 GHz if you type 999,99999 and go up with steps selected. Crazy device, right? I really was surprised by the clarity of 10 meter amateur reception especially in the Cityband at 27MHz. I got signal and modulation of stations even in my house miles away. This is a very affordable Cityband Receiver. You can program all 40 CE channels to scan through them all day without fraining the battery. TX is very low power and probably reaches 50-100 metsrs with several hundreds of Milliwatts or less. That is safe and not bad either.
In the airband and FM broadcast band you can transmit also and the stereo home radio set proves that. Not sure if all those FM transmitters for car stereo from a walkman are banned but the UV-K5(8) can do this also. Reception of AM Airband is a novelty and audio quality is very in-audible. You can hardly make out what is said. A dedicated scanner is better suited for this purpose but strictly better. As far as repeater use this blew my mind and i can even listen to a repeater that is more than 8 miles away from me. So the cue signal came in at them with less than 4 Watts. END OF LINE.
Thanks for your comment. Mine is no TXing at all over 639MHz . I can select 999 but there is no TX in my unit. Is yours transmitting if you select for example 950MHz? Which firmware you flashed exactly?
As you said, the AM RX is 2/10 - sometimes it sounds 5/10 and the next over it is unaccectable 1/10. They used some kind if internal "hack" to even do it at all.
But compared to other chinese radios, "it´s ok" + super cheap. There are more expensive radios with worse harmonics, that´s why i say "ok". it´s NOT inside the german specs, I know, but for RX and in a S&R situation does this matter? If you are doing regulator operations, are you using such a radio? Don´t think so.

Hello Sandor, Thank you for your videos. I recently overheard an argument about the UV-K5 radio being very bad with interferencing on channels. Just like the Baofengs are hated in europe, this UV-K5 received the same hate. Are they a catergory above the Baofengs, like Wouxun radios? Thanks.

@@DM4DS Thanks, I have used the TX version on a couple of UV-K5 and is transmitting nothing but noise on the 27 mHz band. The other versions support emission too?
