A Trip on the First Ever K Set Cars
An interesting one here.
K1 - K4 consisted of 2 car sets that ran the Morisset to Newcastle shuttle on weekdays.
There was also a 2 car service that ran from Sydney Terminal to Newcastle in the early hours of weekday mornings.
The consists were
K1 - C3501 - D4096
K2 - C3502 - D4097
K3 - C3503 - D4098
K4 - C3504 - D4099
In 2013 these 4 sets were taken off the Newcastle line and had the crew cab of the D cars (4096-4099) partially gutted and opened up.
The photo’s attached show the ex crew compartment opened up on D4097 on K98.
They were then reconfigured into x2 4 car sets.
A bit of renumbering happened and are as follows.
The original K98 was renumbered K91
K1 & K2 were put together to make K98
K3 & K4 were put together to make K99
They currently run suburban services on the T2, T3 & T8 lines.
The consists are now:
K98 - C3501 - D4096 - D4097 - C3502
K99 - C3503 - D4098 - D4099 - C3504
D4098 actually ran around for some time (as part of both K3 and K99) with the car number as C4098.

I used to hate catching these- especially during summer. But today I caught one (hadn't caught one for ages) and it was so nostalgic!
R.I.P Gary Goldman, you bloody legend!!!
True, I love his voice 😭
you mean grant
@@top40researcher31 Oops... I always called him Gary, lol.
Rip grant fr true legend and these stupid transport ministers ain’t letting him be remembered
Amazing video ❤❤
Thank you so much :)
4097 looks very clean and shiny.
When you said car 3501, I straight away thought of the beautiful steam locomotive. The K sets have beautiful uninterrupted window view with no joins.
would be quite a ride during travel to stand between the carriages as you did phil at 2:08. nice, fresh breeze on a warm day.
im old enough to remember when the k sets were almost exclusively on the t1 penrith/richmond lines many moons ago...back when pipita was a shuttle service operated by a rattler
Me too! I remember them in 1984! They were preferred over the Red Rattlers and the S-Set's for their air-conditioning!
I used to love 4097, I remember before they covered the doors there were no windows and you could enjoy the wind on hot summers days.
10 years ago when you made the video Remember about the string between these cars and the Orange paint
Oh yes that was one of the first 20ish videos! :)
Awesome Video Phil of K99 or K98 btw it was nice meeting up with you and Transport Vlogs today.
It was nice meeting up with you too mate :)
@@sydneytrainsvlogs All Good hope you enjoy the rest of the Expo today if are you going.
Love it
Good ol K sets
🔥🔥🔥
Great old days!!
The early service you mentioned in the description always departed at 5.07 AM from Sydney terminal then headed up to Newcastle.
It was nice seeing you at the expo today Phil! 😊
where
It was great seeing you also! 😊
So this is what you told me in the comments! 😂😂😂
Nice air con
K Sets Constructed between 1981-1985
Great video, Phil! It was nice to see you and Paul from Transport Vlog today at the expo
I remember when I watching the early morning K Set 2 car pass Berowra Station prior to the introduction of the Oscars
Which is the odd out of the F-Set, W-Set, S-Set, V-Set, T-Set, K-Set and the M-Set? It isn't the air-conditioning, or the voltage _(they all run on 1,500VDC)._ Not including the fact the early Red Rattlers, the door were operated by the passengers!
Answer: The K-Set, the pantograph is on the front of the second car, instead of the back of the first car!
The C Sets also have that.
@@TrainsForNSWVlogs Were they before the K-Sets or after?
@@jonathonshanecrawford1840 They were after in 1987.
@@TrainsForNSWVlogs Thank you! So the K-Set are older, I remember them in 1984, as I don't live in Australia any more since 1984, I have missed a lot!
@@jonathonshanecrawford1840 Thats sad. The A, B & D Sets have got non-control trailer cars with pantographs too.
Currently I live in Te Kuiti, I am an *Australian,* I miss the Sydney trains, like the S-Sets, K-Sets and the Red Rattlers. Never been on the T-Sets, as I had to go back to Auckland in 1984! The only vision of the T-Sets and later are only on
I would love to acquire a HO model of a T-Set or V-Set! As I know one can buy them on like _(from New Zealand)_ but I could never afford it!
Hey Phil have you changed your camera? Looks a bit different this video..
I was there on Saturday, n saw the driver cabin of the 3801 and the one nicknamed: The PIG
Here's a Question I've always wanted to ask. How far apart are the signals for example Ashfield and Summer Hill?
The Signals between say Gosford and Woy Woy are about 1,000 metres!
Even between Town Hall and Wynyard are very close, I think some of them are about 100 metres!
How do you know Sydney trains Vlogs that this K set train will go into the Macdonald town yard
I tracked its run on Anytrip :)
Definitely running out of time for them. With the D sets now being tested, it's only a matter of time before the Oscars start to cascade onto suburban services.
There’s still a year left before revenue service of D sets
True, Harish. Having said that, a year will have passed before you know it, so start getting your footage and photos now.
I've never rode a K set car, or any of those types of trains, and I really do want to experience it, and also, are you coming to the Transport Heritage Expo tomorrow? I really hope I can see you there.
I saw himnon Platform 4 infront of the S Set.
@@TrainsForNSWVlogs Damn, I went on the F set.
Why would ANYBODY who was not totally BORING be interested in trains movements and suburban trains?
Hey Phil, do you watch sports,? I am just curious
How do I get a k set?
They run on the T8 T2 T3 line along the City Circle
@@EricYu1 Coolangatta 👍👍
Is the Ashfield service a short line or a long line ?
Short. Back then it was all stops now with Timetable change it's no an express
Third! Wow!
Hey Phil was great to finally meet you & Paul in person. The RUclips Channel your looking for is Optimus_Prime & it's video No 413. Ok Hopefully catch up again one day. Cheers. 👍👍👍👍👍
