In this video I am kicking off a new sew along series for making clothes! The first pattern will be Butterick 6214 (B6214)- a simple loose fitting top that will be the perfect starting point for beginners and those of you who have had failed attempts at making your own clothes in the past. This will be a fun sew along so I hope you'll stick around and give it a go! You might surprise yourself!
This sew along series is for beginners who want to learn how to sew their own clothes. I hope to walk you through how to make this fun and breezy woven top using sewing pattern #B6214.
I recommend you watch this video in it's entirety to get a solid understanding of what we will be doing in this sew along since I'm taking a different approach to teaching this project in hopes of helping more sewing newbies get better results this go around.

I grew up around sewing and was hand stitching by 5 and doing my mother's hand finishing by 8, but developed a phobia of machines when I saw my mother sew through her finger when I was 5. Hand work was my comfort zone. I machine sewed a little over the years, but in fits and starts. In the last year, I've been overcoming that fear. I prayed about getting over it and feel like that prayer has been answered. :) Your videos have played a huge role in my progress! I've made a table runner, a little bag, (with your strap tutorial) several zippered bags with boxed bottoms, head bands... I found a great sewing community too. This and finding three wonderful vintage sewing machines has brought me so much joy this last year! I'm late to the party, but am hoping to get the pattern tomorrow. Thank you!

I just binge watched The Great British Sewing Bee which got me interested in garment making. I am a self taught sewist but nothing I ever made fit me properly. I have been quilting since the 70's so I do know my way around the sewing machine. I searched RUclips for sewing instructions and found this. Now I will follow your tutorials. Thanks Vanessa.

I don’t write, complaining about nasal or whiney voices to other teachers...I just don’t watch their videos. People who don’t like your teaching style can not watch. Nuff said.

I'm not a newbie sewist, but am always in need of a refresher. I've been concentrating on pillows, baby blankets & kitchen stuff (hot pads, potholders from one of your previous videos), but need new, cute tops now. Excited to follow along!
Can't wait to go thru this series. I have yet to make a top that I've been willing to wear in public!! Really struggle finding tops I like, that fit well and are made with comfortable, washable, fabrics, in colors I like. Love the way you teach, Vanessa. This is going to be fun, I'm sure.
I had a mean home-ec sewing teacher in 8th grade and she scared me off from garment sewing. Since you have successfully taught me to make quilts, bags, wallets and other fun projects in the Quilt Club, I am confident that you'll be able to help me get over my garment phobia. Great new series! I hope I can sew-along! I am always stymied by the lines on the sewing machine and knowing which one to use for sewing garments. Hi Vanessa - I really like the looks of this shirt. I too have a high waist and the length is perfect. Just like I want mine to be. So glad you are showing both how it’s done wrong and how it’s done right. I do a lot of crafty sewing but not garment. This is something I would like to make. Looking forward to this series. You were in my head! I wear a 3x because I want them long enough and not tight. I will look at the measurement video. I am a true beginner and have failed and gave up. You've always been an amazing source of information, Amazon is already out of the pattern but I am going to go to some stores and look. First diy I will be able to follow along with for clothing, I know it will be fantastic! Yes, I will be making 10 of these shirts and iron on pictures and add-ons, I know it. Hi Vanessa. I got the Butterick 6214 pattern from JoAnns for 1.99. I can’t find the right fabric in the store so I want to buy from you to make sure I get the right type of fabric. However I’m having trouble getting the free pattern to download. I’m going to try to buy the Winchester Dolman sleeve blouse using the woven fabric from your store. I think that It’s a good lesson to start with woven and then use the stretchy fabric afterwards. I’m anxious to start this project. I like your style of teaching, don’t stop, because it’s easy to follow and you make sewing fun.
