In this video we talk more about the rayon challis fabric I'm using, grainlines, pattern markings and we finally start laying out our fabric and cutting out the pattern pieces. I also share tips & tricks and pointers on my favorite way to cut notches.

The pattern we are using is Butterick 6214 (B6214)- a simple loose fitting top that will be the perfect starting point for beginners and those of you who have had failed attempts at making your own clothes in the past. This will be a fun sew along so I hope you'll stick around and give it a go! You might surprise yourself!
This sew along series is for beginners who want to learn how to sew their own clothes. If you are impatient or need a quick fix this is probably not the sew along series for you.
My teaching style lends itself to a super in-depth understanding of the different factors that will play a role in the garment sewing process. If you are tired of wasting time & money on trying to make your clothes and have had repeated unsuccessful results I challenge you to take your time, be patient, take notes and watch this entire video. You can do it!

Explaining the Single Notches as well as the Double Notches and how important they are, along with the helpful to clipping them and to make sure to catch both layers. Grain line and Crossline grain - I heard of them, but never really understood it. Now, I understand it's pretty important and can't be cheap about it.

I have been sewing a very long time and I am still learning. Thank you I have always cut my front and back with the neck openings heading in the same direction just in case the fabric is a subtle directional pattern. You are doing a great job!!!

I’m getting more comfortable with sewing since I got my newer older machine. The only thing I still and probably will always struggle with is, measurements. Trying to read a tape measure or cutting fabrics to certain sizes is like I have discovered this unknown never before spoken foreign language. That’s where the hubbin comes in because he works with a measuring tape every day at work plus it gives us some quality time together along with giving him an idea of just how much time and effort goes into these projects.
It’s funny how great minds think alike. I Use washers as weights too as well as the small and large rotary cutters. I am a seasoned sewer however I have throughly enjoyed this series as a refresher. Ha, I thought I knew how to read a pattern but you showed me a few things I did not know. Good job! When I learned to sew we learned in school. The rest I learned from the School of Hard Knocks. Self taught. Thank you for the series and I look forward to many more projects in the future.
These videos have been great with wonderful tips!. May I suggest you tell them why they cut on the grain other than it won't turn out right. It makes a huge difference in the way your garment hangs on your body. If I understood this in the beginning I would have measured more often instead of eyeballing it on the larger pieces.

Or another website called Craftsy. < I know for sure they have several sewing courses on grading that you can purchase. You can also subscribe to a monthly subscription and have unlimited access to all the online course on there website. Just an extra tip: Aligning the pattern piece along the grainline (parallel to the selvege) there isn't any stretch. If you were to place the pattern piece with the grainline perpendicular to the selvege, there will be stretch to that piece of the garment. Stretch and no stretch to the pattern pieces does make a difference. :)

Another great tutorial, you gives me inspiration to start making some of my clothing again, I have tons of apparel fabric that I have not use in a while, I looked into my boxes tonight and found few pieces of Challis and linen, I like your pattern, need to buy one for a top , and the linen for a cool summer pants.

I use rotary cutters too, small one for curves is the best. I can’t cut a straight line with scissors to save my life. I also use the metal washers for weights on pattern pieces. Ain’t nobody got time for pinning pattern pieces LOL thank you for your great videos

I just ordered the pattern and fabric...found both at Michaels since you are pretty much out of stock. Hopefully won't take too long to get. And because of the ease charts I too am needing the Med in this pattern instead of the Lg I usually get. Thanks so much for such excellent info.
Hi Julie, if you don't mind me piping in: As long as the design on the fabric is the same both ways, it doesn't matter. If the design goes only one way (trees, houses, faces, etc.) then it is important to make sure the "top" of the design points up. (As opposed to upside down.) Also, it matters for fuzzy fabrics like Corduroy and velvet. And anything that is directional. Hope this helps.

Just finished to this point, 1 thing that slightly confused me is you say that the grain line runs perpendicular to the selvage but I think you should have said parallel to it! Luckily you had mentioned there was lots of info on the pattern instructions and I found the info there.
Hi, Vanessa. Great videos. They are worth every moment of my time. Tell me, WHY do you recommend that fabric is folded pretty sides together? I can't think why it makes a difference.

The top you are making is exactly what I like to wear so pattern and fabric ordered! 2 questions, when is the next video due? and you mention making your own bias binding...I do this for quilting what width strip would you suggest I start with for this kind of project?

Love the video but would still like to know a bit more about adjusting the pattern especially for bigger bust than the rest of the measurements. Would you go to the bust measurement then adujust the waist hips or vice a versa? if so how do we alter the patern to suit?
Hi Beverley. These kinds of custom fitting changes cannot be briefly explained in this video series. There are full weekend workshops and in depth online courses that you can take to learn how to fit your unique body. A starting point would be to cut the size that has the finished garment measurements at the size bust you'd like it to finish at and grade down to a lower size in the waist and hips. You'll need multiple sizes of the patterns and some tools like a french curve, tracing paper, ruler and pencil to get started.

I'd love to know more about how you get the fabric lined up on the grain - I really struggle with my light weight fabrics and rayon. Do you have a video that goes further into this? I noticed that you did the notices, but not the circles - like the one in the centre of the shoulder in this video - what's your technique for marking them, I always end up marking the top one (where i'm cutting two layers of fabric) but the the bottom mark is all topsy turvy

I watched you series on the pattern with great interest. My only question is. My hip size is 44,1/2 so going on the finished garment length as you suggest I would need to cut out a small size?. But my bust is 47" and my waist is 42". Surely even with the 8" ease that will make the top, too tight. I would like some wriggle room in it. Your thoughts please? Also I love your tape measure, Thank you.

You should lay out the pieces the way the pattern tells you especially if there is an arrow on the pattern! That arrow should sit parallel to the edge of the fabric. The finished garment will hang better when it is sewn. It shows you the grain of the fabric, saving money if great but you should still lay out the way the pattern tells you!
Did you watch the video? The front and back are placed on the fold as instructed and the grainline on the sleeve is clearly explained. There is no arrow on these pieces-- that's usually for bias cut pieces. Thanks.
You spent so much time on reading the backs of the pattern package, I kinda surprised that you didn’t review the pattern directions. What all the notes mean, how they recommend you lay out the pieces, trimming the pattern, etc. I read in some other comments for previous videos in the series that we should iron our pattern before cutting material. Is that something you do??

I always get mixed up with the pattern pieces. Face down then cut or face up and then cut. Your 2 piece you cut with the paper pattern face down. Does it make a difference.

Lots of great info but I’m concerned about cutting fabric before making pattern adjustments, especially for those of us whose size range fits multiple patterns. As a way of preserving my patterns I trace the tissue onto medical paper so I don’t cut into the tissue at all. Should I wait till the next tutorial or go ahead and use the bottom measurement to choose my size? Thanks for the series!
This is meant to be a beginner series to get viewers to make something wearable as an introductory course for free here on RUclips. I chose a loose fitting top because it can be made with minimal adjustments and at least you’ll have something wearable to start with. Unfortunately, I cannot cover fitting adjustment content also in this series as it is a wealth of information all on its own. We all have unique bodies and those adjustments will take more time, patience and trial and error to perfect beyond making this simple top. I would suggest seeking out a fitting course online or in person for more custom help with the fitting concerns you may have. Happy sewing!
TheCraftyGemini - thanks for your quick reply! I certainly appreciate your hard work and instruction. My question now is, if I choose the size dictated by the lower edge width, it would be a medium (like you 😉) however I have the pattern for large which doesn’t include this size ( thanks to your great instruction I will shop for patterns differently from now on). So should I just stick with the large and try a few adjustments on my own. I am a quilter and have often sewn Children’s clothes but not many garments for myself. Is this something I should undertake. Again, I love your videos, and have been following you for years, so thank you!
If you don't want to get the smaller sized pattern yes, I would make the large and see how it fits first before you make any adjustments. You might like it as is.
Curious, is there a reason why the back piece is placed in the opposite direction or doesn't it matter?

Vanessa, why do we HAVE TO cut the sleeve on grain? What would happen if you had cut it on the small piece of fabric left instead? I always wondered that. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I sometimes have found myself short on a certain fabric and had had to ignore that request. Beginner big mistake for sure! 😉
Cut on grain so it will drape properly. Otherwise, you'll end up with a funky sleeve.

You did not explain how to take the difference in the sizes for waist, etc and cut the pattern accordingly. Do you cut the pattern by the X size for bust, then move the scissors to the XL line for the hips? Please do a video of cutting the pattern! I am stuck in limbo.

That's what I used to cut out the size Medium through the whole pattern. Custom pattern alterations require in depth instruction that I can't briefly cover in this beginner video series. Everyone's body is unique. I would seek out some videos on your specific issue or consider signing up for an in person workshop or one of the many in depth online courses that specifically cover pattern fitting changes. If you are blending (grading) between sizes then you'll need to redraft the lines of the pattern to cover the sizes you need.

You said over and over and over that the pattern wouldn't fit people as it was in the packet, and I was looking for some kind of adjustment based on the measurements, but there was none. You just took the pattern out of the packet and used it as it was. I don't get why you kept saying over and over and making such a big deal about reading the pattern measurements vs. your own measurements if you weren't going to do anything with that, other than the length, which is easy to do anyway. I don't mean to sound critical, but all that jabbering and you just took the pattern out and used it as is anyway. Guess I will look elsewhere for help with pattern adjustments. Disappointed.
