This is a huge problem where I live. The population density has grown so much in my neighborhood due to renters. In fact, there's people who make millions buying and renting rooms. However, this woman shouldn't be fined, since she's only renting for extra money, not for profit.

I have someone doing this in my neighborhood. At any given time it appears there are 3-4 guests in the home. The guests are usually quiet but there have been incidents. The guests are also taking up parking spots and coming and going at all hours. It's problematic and honestly I would have never moved here if I had any inkling this would be going on. My area is zoned for residential housing not for hotels.

Then you also have to clean after yourself and if you have hiccup you can be screwed over. It is not just hotels beating up airbnb

  • @GotLotsaFaith

You are not a good neighbor if you run a lodging service out of a residential home or condo. Having lots of guests is obviously going to annoy others and should be done in moderation. If your house is remotely situated enough to avoid disturbing neighbors then it might be ok, however, guests are NOT residents and will not have the same consideration as they should... it’s an issue

At the rate she's charging, she must be renting out roughly 100 rooms a year. So her neighbors have strangers coming and going every third day: I seriously doubt that they view her as a good neighbor. She is running a business out of her home, and most municipalities have limits on how much traffic is allowed for a home business. This is why we have zoning laws.
Limiting room rentals to someone's primary residence also keeps rich folks from jacking up purchase prices so much that locals can't afford to buy homes. AirBnB buyers can make money purchasing modest homes for double what most residents would otherwise pay, effectively keeping average folk from being able to find or afford houses.

Illegal hotels make it impossible to rent or own a place in that city at a fair rate or low regulated rate. Thus leading to a high proverty situation or homeless situation. I wish people used their brains on why some laws were made. Certain laws are pushed into place by not a big man or the 1%.it takes lots of blood, sweat and tears from regular people to push certain laws

It's the people or companies that buy investment properties to use as AirBnB rentals that spoil it for everyone. I agree that you should reside in the property if you want host a room in AirBnB. That'll keep the ones who want to undercut the hotels in the area away. I don't think AirBnB was created to be used in that way. As far as individuals needing to get a permit to host a room in their own property, that's complete horse poop. Regulators tend to overreact. That regulation is plain stupid

Lot of people in the comments who don't seem to know about the other side of this issue; that being land owners taking long terms rentals off the market and putting them up as short term rentals for only a few times out of the year in places that already have housing issues. Don't get me wrong, if someone owns their property they should fucking own their property, but among many other seemingly complex issues, you've got the obvious problem that a lot of people are finding it more and more difficult to find long term rentals, and most of those types of people are the type that are middle to lower class working infrastructure jobs as well as retail and humans service jobs that keep most places commercially viable that draw in vacation renters in the first place. I'm living in a place now that has a serious issue with expanding it's population while finding housing for it, partly because it is a somewhat remote area, but part of the other reason is that many houses up here that were once long term rentals are now short term vacation rentals that only get used a fraction of the year. People who do all the jobs that make this place nice can, at times, barely afford rent, so buying a house or something sure as hell isn't possible, and with that being the case the population has started to stagnate, which good in some regards, but if more landowners start changing to vacation rentals, the population is just gonna decrease until you get to the point that there aren't enough people to run things and make this a habitable location, certainly not during the summer when the vacationers come round. There has to be a balance here where the needs of locals are met and landowners still have viable option to utilize their properties to make money, and I'm not entirely certain that huge fines and higher taxes are the exact means to carry that out, I think it's and excellent PUNISHMENT, but not a fair deterrent or means of achieving equilibrium, at the very least it's drawing attention to the issue.
(I should note that many houses here are in fact vacation homes to begin with, so it fudges the numbers a bit when I try to figure out how many houses have been converted from long term to short term.)

I hate staying in hotels and would choose AirBnB or similar any time (unless I feel the host is too creepy for my safety). I also hosted guests in the past for free but cannot do that now because of the gate security arrangements and working long hours... The beauty is that the host and the guest choose each other, whereas it doesn't happen in a hotel. Also, I want to be able to cook my own food wherever I am rather than try to find a restaurant that is open when I want to eat and that serves food for special diets (and I still couldn't be sure what they put into it). A hotel with cooking facilities are not all that common and the price reflects the extra convenience.
I agree that any hosting gig should have limits of how many days of the year one can open the door for guests, otherwise it is no different from a hotel. But I think ruling that the host has to be present at the time is ridiculous. Say, I need to go for a seminar or training workshop for a week, during which time I have to pay for accommodation: that means effectively paying for two places at once! However, if I can rent my space for the duration, I am only paying a little more or the same (if I find a place of the same value) as if I was staying at home.

If you're renting out more than one room then it should be considered a Motel and you should need a license. And you should be collecting taxes and forwarding that to the government because you are creating an income.

NY, LA, San Diego, are all ruled by Democrats, who want equality in poverty. It's OK, chances are these people elected the politicians, that do this to them, or they gave a shit and let others decide for them. People have the government they deserve.
A Lemonade Stand in Las Vegas costs $800 in licensing. To be allowed to flip burgers costs only $100 in licensing.
Johnson & Johnson started their empire with a few bucks from the family in a Garage. Doing exactly the same, what they did would cost today a sizable 6 digit amount, primarily for legal cost.
Democrats, Republicans makes no difference. The politicians must follow party line and are tight in a power structure of lobbyists. Even if they wanted to, they cannot represent the people. Independent Candidates can.
Until the power structures of organized politics (crime) are broken up, it's getting worse, every day.

Let me tell you, you don't know how big the dark side of AirBnB is. I work for them. Their driving motto is "belong anywhere" under the guise of diversity. They are an extremely left organization. They're pretty strict about things like a Host not being able to screen guests by religion, race, or background. You may knowingly or unknowingly be smuggling people or terrorists. The safeguards are so thin. It's also easy for hosts to ripoff guests up to $5,000 with bogus insurance claims. Like getting appliances replaced for free. Remember the Las Vegas shooter was in multiple overlapping rentals at the same time and got around his ID requirements.

She was legal and wasn’t stealing taxes, being illegal, or unreasonable
    Shameful
There are websites with hundreds of rentals by certain ethnic groups that are VERY illegal ... not reporting the business, no tax, guilty of exploitation... etc...
    Please get them,
not the honest ones who are easy to gain profit from.

I'm in favour of regulation, safety & standards but hate to see petty over regulation from local authorities. If the Mafia were taking a slice of the action it would be called extortion!

This is horrible. I don’t blame Airbnb as much as I blame the stupid governments.

"Place isn't that nice" .... I'm guessin' you still believe "Motel 6" actually has rooms for $6.00 a night?
Even cheap fleabag hotel/motels, by the freeway are minimum $50 - $60 bucks a night; plus, you got to be out of the room by 10 or 11 am.

The only reason I do not like to rent Airbnb is because I suspect they have cameras everywhere watching me. In a Holiday Inn or Hilton I don't worry about a camera in my room or bathroom. But I've used Airbnb all over Europe because it was the cheapest way to go.
