  • Today I'm joined by engineer turned watch entrepreneur Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch for a brand new #WatchTalk episode where we discuss watches we wish would be rereleased. In this video we select a variety of watches from Tudor, Seiko, Casio, and Rolex that we'd like to see brought back from the brands' archives for a modern update, or succeeded with newer versions. In discussing our favorite picks, we unwittingly discover a little known patent pending for a perpetual calendar complication that reveals Rolex's next big move, further indicating the brand's future and higher end ambitions. We also delve into an underrated, rich legacy of aviation watches that is often overshadowed by Seiko's focus on Olympic timing, as well as a new direction for Tudor that could be the antidote to the oversaturation of the watch world with their Black Bay variations that have been released ad nauseum. In this video we also discuss a Casio diver that would completely change the entire watch industry, and could certainly be described as a license to print money. What do you think of the watches in this video? And what are your picks for watches you'd like to see rereleased in the near future? Please share in the comments.

    Fun fact about the "Superlative Chronometer" certification : Rolex started doing it after losing several chronometric contests so in order to avoid the embarrassment, they made their own standard and tested everything themselves and delivered their own certification to their own watches.
    Which completely defeats the point of chronometric certifications, which is that they are delivered by an independent third-party and not by the watchmaker.
    The idea of testing assembled watches for certification was also first started by the french chronometric observatory in Besancon which no one used because it was in France.

    • @skylineuk1485
      @skylineuk1485 3 месяца назад

      It should be pointed out that ALL Rolex superlative movements are COSC certified first and then after that Rolex test them and then in the watch case also. So they are all at least COSC but are further filtered out to -+2 secs in the watch case.

    perpetual calendars are super interesting from an engineering standpoint. and i can totally appreciate the technology. but as a watch wearer, in reality it’s absolutely no issue to manually skip 1 - 4 days. it’s only 5 times a year. but to me a watch is primarily a functional piece, i‘m too rough with my stuff that i would put some delicate work of art on my wrist just to bump it into the next steel door frame or forget to put it off before doing the dishes or something like that 😂

    27:52 We skip a leap year on years that are not divisible by 400 but are divisible by 100. The closest one will be the year 2100.
    A year has approximately 365.2422 days. Every four years we add a day because of accumulated 0.25 from each year. The remaining 0.0078 would add up to approximately 3 days after 400 hundred years. That is why we skip 3 leap years in every 400 years.

While 003 is virtually impossible to find, the 001 can still be founf for around grand and a half and they are amazing watches. Love the light bezel spin on the II mockup! Mmm... I'm not sure the Duro automatic is for me. The Duro is quite large, and I prefer a smaller diver. While I do own a Duro, I wouldn't want an automatic version. At the Duro's price, I'm willing to accept its rather massive and inelegant size, but at the same price point as a Mako, I'd definitely choose the Mako.
    I think "Cheap watches that watch people wear" would be interesting, there are obvious things in there like the F91W on a NATO strap, or even Once Again Swatch... But what about more obscure things?

    Based on the final cut of M:I Ghost Protocol, if Tom Cruise's wearing of that Tudor 70330N WAS product placement, then Tudor did not get their money's worth. Hi TGV, Im thinking that Tudor may have something up their sleeve with the 'Monte Carlo', heritage range. Although discontinued now, I keep thinking this could make an incredible comeback, only in the RedBull F1 colour ways, like the recent collabs with the FXD. Maybe they could just put out another FXD, but how cool would a new Heritage Chrono look in RedBull F1 colours, or even in the big block case design. They did, after all, tease us with the solid gold one watch version last year , with a brand new column wheel movement! Surely all that work won't be 'wasted' on one watch?? Both fit the racing theme perfectly of course. Any thoughts on this? Would you like to see it? Kind Regards Barry

    What I would have really wanted, is a 1953 style Airman with 100 meter resistance, instead of the measly 30 and sort of ok 50 they currently offer.
    The Airman Contemporary is so much better to read with the plain steel bezel, and without the total blackout and overdone and impractical camouflage type dial schemes, but those are not available new anymore anywhere!

    Excellent video guys. Been very busy for a while and missed a lot of videos. TGV, there's an interesting movie if you haven't seen it, I know you like the classical design period. It's simply called Ferrari and is a biopic of Enzo Ferrari and what was going on in the 1950's, the golden of Ferrari and Maserati, Jaguar etc. The racing scenes are fantastic and those red Ferrari's are incredible! Anyway to get to the point, can't really see any wristwatches but you will see the old style stopwatches. I noticed one from Universal Geneve and what really pleased me, one from ACAR of which I actually own one! The movie is on Prime, hopefully it's on in your region and if so, I highly recommend. It has wonderful class and style written all over it.

    Love the show, but what is this Casio hype about? Casio was fresh and innovative once, but now makes mostly over priced, HUGE, very uncomfortable watches with mostly proprietary straps, and are loaded with spikes and protrusions, as if they copied a porcupine! To add insult to injury, prices are big as well, for plastic watches that are cheap to make, but are sold for several hundreds and even thousands. Their "stainless steel" cases look very cheap, and have silver painted plastic areas as well. Casio really tries to out-do Invicta in big and ugly designs, but Casio's plastic monstrosities do look very cheap. The only good Casios are their 15 to 50 dollar digitals, and those displays are still as small, as they were in the 70s and 80s, no good for my aging eyes. Casio lost me a long time ago!
    So, why is Invicta getting soooo much hate, with their very diverse catalogue? I browsed through their collections, and was surprised how many styles and designs they offer. They make a living with what sells, but nobody wants to admit buying them. I have 3 Pro Divers, and after seeing a Casio Duro in person, I really love my Invictas. Yes, they have gaudy, huge, bling loaded watches fit for a drag queen stage show, but they are done in a weirdly good "FUN" taste, mostly in metal, and some with glitter stones. These drag-watches are just so far over the top, they are good. I also just browsed Rolex and Omega, and they have super expensive bling watches, covered in glitter stones, I find gaudy in a bad way! Invicta also have many very affordable small and mid sized watches of simple and elegant design, that anyone can wear in a dress event without drawing negative attention.
    Come to think of it, trying to come up with a short description of their catalogue, "diverse" nails it. "Diverse" is of course also an indicator, that always attracts a really bad attitude by certain groups. Could it be, that Invicta is simply hated for being the best known maker of watches that include something for everybody, and does so on a wonderfully low budget? Is this a class, gender, and race warfare thing?

    Perpetual = automatic.
    Rolex is too snobbish to use common words used everyday by working class mob.
    Still, in terms of features and accuracy Rolex is not even close to Casio F-91W. 😂

    There's a leap year every 4 years. However, the end of every century (1700, 1800, 1900, 2100) is not treated as a leap year (this is the one that throws most perpetual calendars off), but the end of a millennium is treated as a normal leap year (so 2000 was a normal leap year). Most perpetual calendar watches just have the 4 year repeating cycle, so they will usually need to be adjusted at the end of every century: the 1st of March 2100.
    I have a Seiko kinetic perpetual - mine is a Sportura sports style watch with auto relay, which makes the watch go into suspend mode when you're not wearing it to save the battery and resets the hands to the correct time when you pick it up again. The Sportura perpetual has been discontinued for some time. The only remaining kinetic watches that Seiko still listed in the UK are in the Premier line. These feature a mixture of perpetual calendar and moon phase models

    I love the beauty of a quality mechanical; but my latest watch is the stainless Marathon quartz because I love Tritium lume and this quartz is an outstanding Swiss movement that has the charm of always lining up the second hand with every dial marker. I wear mine on an Invicta rubber strap ordered from Utah. The Marathon rubber strap was overpriced junk.

    These guys seem like an odd pairing. Divergent style taste with respect to everything… except watches. I don’t get the Long Island watch guy. His videos are interesting but his wardrobe seems limited to jeans and hoodies bought at Target. When I got into watches it prompted me to improve my overall look. I started wearing more collared shirts, long sleeves and jackets more often, and by now that is simply how I dress. He is never shown below the waist but my guess is that in addition to his hoodie and jeans his ensemble includes a chunky pair of New Balance sneakers.

    The obvious watch person might be tricky. My nephew is not a watch person. I switch between a bunch of watches, so he's seen me wear lots of different watches but has never commented on any of them, he just doesn't seem interested. Some years ago he talked about maybe getting a watch, which naturally peaked my interest, he had no clue what watch except it had to be "one of those with a second hand that slides rather than jumps" in his own words. I got him a Seiko SRPG35 and I've never seen him without it since, according to his parents he never takes it off, so it seems he likes the watch, but I've never heard him talk about it, he still show absolutely no interest in what I or anybody else wears. To be honest, he might not even like the watch for all I know, he might just wear a timepiece that he happens to own? My point being, someone wearing a nice watch might just being someone having it gifted.

    I own one of those Tudor Heritage Chronographs in Orange & Blue (Go Gators!) and I love it. I need to wear it more.
    Yes.....more variety.....less damn Black Bays. The BBs are overplayed.
    Duro leaves me cold.....but with an automatic movement? Why not?
    Flighty is good......needs to be upgraded with a sapphire crystal. Not sure about the white bezel though.....to me that's a bit jolting. But that's just me.
    Oh yeah....I'd love to have a Rolex perpetual. That would be epic. The SkyDweller was oh-so-close.....but not quite there. Rolex needs to do this. And one with a moon phase too. I love moon phase watches.
    Once again another great "Buddy Video". I love these. I look forward to them. Thank you for this. Onwards......Upwards.......Ciao!
