  • Mercedes models C, E, G, S and AMG (61 models in all) from 2008 - 15 all share a common part that will fail when you least expect it leaving you stranded and having to have your car towed. Millions of vehicles worldwide are affected and there is no recall. It will cost you thousands to fix at the dealer.

if it makes it past warranty "they" don't care. and saving $ per unit x millions of units is millions saved. the CEO always needs a bonus you know.

Your right - its the holy grail really - all they had to do is test it till it failed and build it to that spec - brushes don't last forever do they?

Saw the thumbnail and had no idea what the little motor could be for. Of course it was over/under engineered 🙄. At least it's replaceable and not unobtanium!

True - but for most Benz owners it's $2500 or the end of your car

This is a very common source of failure in many devices including cars that use cheap small dc mottors where the brushes
wear out, most repair shops would tell you that you need a complete new assembley at a crazy price.
I have replaced many in the actuators found in most modern cars, the plastic gears also fail with age, and you can't buy them
    as spare parts.

Good info Barbara - I don't mind if the wipers fail but locking you out of your whole car - that is ridiculous - Cheers from Canada!

@@carquestions You are welcome, after spending a lifetime repairing consumer electronics which failed due to the same
cheap parts that todays cars are full of.
The latest cars seem to reach 100K miles then fall apart with expensive parts required, some items like these locks can be
repaired, but a lot of them are sealed for life and you wreck them just gaining access to the broken parts.

@@Barbarapape That's why we should complain and remind government agencies they have a job to do. And bring in useful "right to repair" laws - the average person in the 50's and 60's was encouraged to do a lot of their own repair work - not a bad thing

@@carquestions I was brought up in the 60's and learned from my relations how to repair broken items
without having to buy expensive parts, all it requires are some basic tools and a bit of knowledge most of the time.
Todays society are very wastefull, but this is not helped by most products been designed to be thrown away rather
      than repaired.
I find it very frustrating when i am unable to repair an item because no spare parts are available, you can't use a 3D
printer for a lot of parts, the plastics just can't handle the stress.
We can't keep on filling the ground with items that only require simple repairs, we are destroying the planet that keeps
      us alive.

That's no recall material because it does not pose a safety hazard in traffic.
You say it should be a brushless motor... No. I'd say, no motor at all. Just a mechanical lock will do just fine, like it did in the old days.

If you pulled over in an emergency, shut it down, took the key, and then found out you're in a live lane and had to move your car and this happens - I'd argue it is a potential hazard - Cheers from Canada Fluffy!
