Man, you're just amazing! I understand everything from this video, thanks! I love the way you are talking to us, let's stop pussyfication of the internet
Hey you, Tuff Guy! How quickly you would turn a complete guitar idiot into the next wannabe Van Halen boot licker? It's a serious question. No, don't tell me you didn't understand. Or else, I'll be under the impression that YOU are the boot licker...
May I know the price of the 52week guitar course please ! You are the only one on RUclips who is not teaching the stupid A-minor pentatonic scale. Every a-hole on RUclips teaches the same old scale. PENTATONIC
Level 2 made sense, just gotta practice those scales for a couple weeks. Then I’ll come back and hit the lesson. Thanks for explaining the different modes and shapes, I only knew one mode one shape lol. Big help!!
Accountability: started about almost a month ago Learning the Dorian mode, and my first attempt going through all 12 keys took 5:05 min, now after a month I’m playing 5 modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Aeonian) 3 notes per string with reversing in all 12 keys in just about 14:20 min which is crazy for me. I can finally play without stoping on the major keys😅 Thanks a lot!
Thank you for re-uploading! Not just for me, but all those who maybe new to your content!! I bet it was super annoying, not that it made you MAD, to redo the video, but I appreciate it a lot! ❤
@@stonks693 a bunch of the scale diagrams, where incorrect! And would have confused folks, so it’s great Mr Eon took the time, to make sure they were correct.
Yes no problem. For anyone who might be wondering, there were 4 scale diagrams that had the 4th note either missing or in the wrong spot in level 2. There was also an audio issue around 56 minutes in. It was honestly a tough decision to re-upload because I knew this would hurt the performance of the video but as a professional it's my job to make sure my diagrams are 100% accurate. I would very much appreciate if you shared this video with a friend. NOW JUST LEAVE!
Another explanation that helped me to understand the modes: Major scale / ionian mode intervals: whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step or WWHWWWH All subsequent modes use the same intervals, but they are shifted to the left. So the dorian intervals are WHWWWHW, the phrygian intervals are HWWWHWW and so on.
100%, refering to modes as just shapes doesn't make any sense. To understand the whole picture you have to understand that a mode is a scale with different intervals.
Yeah i get that, but how the heck do i get that to stick in my head. i can remember wwhwwwh (major) and whwwhww (minor) but idk if i got the brain powers to remember the other 5
@@KyLesCaster try learning which intervals are flattened etc., as well as tying them to songs while you learn? I've been practicing the grateful dead's dark star lately which is in A Mixolydian / E Dorian / D Major, which has helped me realize and build the muscle memory that Mixolydian flattens the major scale's 7th, while dorian flattens the 7th and 3rd, etc.
This is not modes. They're simply neck positions of the major scale. Many people teach it wrong and confuse people. Each neck position can be any mode, it's all about harmonic context.
Thank you for this I was confused by Brandon saying that modes are just major scales that start at a different note within same major scale. I thought, the major scale shape would just move to the "Mode". But in his tabs, i wasn't playing the same fret on the string. This comment clarified that, the steps you took from the Major scale to the Mode carries over and continues from there on to get 7 notes in two octaves.
I’m a big Eric Johnson fan and I try to visualize/use the fretboard like he does. It’s been rather difficult as I can see all of the pentatonics in all 12 the fretboard. But there is more to his pentatonics than that. But he can beautifully use a wider aperture of notes that aren’t just in the pentatonic scale. For the longest time I didn’t know where the notes came from but then the major scale started to make itself clear. It wasn’t just the major scale, but it was his mix of whatever mode was available to him near whatever pentatonic scale he was in. This video has helped me visualize the pentatonics in a more harmonious fashion. It’s been about two weeks and I can better recall intervals and I can see where I am on the fretboard with a greater degree of accuracy. I even got better at chord spellings which was always difficult. This video has put me one step closer to into understanding the anatomy of an Eric Johnson solo/ harmony. Thank you!

Thank you for also sharing your method of writing down your practice times, really helps to keep accountability and register my progress.
This is the best guitar lesson video in the internet. Anyone can become a matured player from beginner level by just coming back to this video again and again. What a legend.
These exercises have made a huge difference. I do the 3 note per string one in all keys every day. I also do the triad arpeggio one in every key each day which wasn’t in this video! I’ll work in a couple more of these as they do really help in mastering every note of every key as well as each mode everywhere on the neck. I have been trying to figure out how to orient myself in any position on the guitar for years now, and I just have to say that these exercises seemed to just make everything click into place in my head. I am looking at positions and seeing exactly where I am relative to the key and I think that it is a shame that not everyone teaches modes exactly how you just explained them. Really excellent work, thank you!
level 2 made sense! I finally understand modes thanks to you! Time to get to work on keys! Thank you, Brandon! Been lost on the fretboard forever (10ish years, shoulda learned a long time ago) and finally understand how it works
I didn’t comment “accountability” because I hadn’t gotten that far in the video. It was immediately apparent to me that I had to spend some time on Levels 2 and 3. So I did. For 2 weeks. Every day. In that time I: - Went from 80 bmp up to 93 bpm and then back down to 85. I make enough mistakes that I’d rather not rush through the exercises. 85 is the sweet spot though I might go up 1 or 2 next week. - Saw my times all over the place. Some of my times at 85 were faster than the same scales at 93. - Had my worst day on Day 14. Sure, it was mostly better than Week 1, but almost all of my times on Day 8, also at 85 bpm, were faster than Day 14. - Memorized a fookload of positions. For Level 3 I no longer need a cheat sheet to see what note/position to start on. This really came together in the last 3 days. - Changed picks. I’m 42, have been playing with red jazz picks since age 16. Switched to Dunlop Ultex in the last week which has changed the feel of everything (long term for the better I can already tell). Plan is to forego Level 2 and work on Levels 3 and 4 for the next 2 weeks. We’ll see where that takes me.
Only getting through level 2 so far, the way you explain things along with the editing make it very easy to understand. coming from someone who never studied music formally once
Your explanation of modes is simple and the best explanation I've seen. The practice routines are fab. You're quite funny as well. Excellent teacher. Thank you.
Ok diva… Level 2 explanation is the best of modes I have ever seen. I never made the connection between modes and starting position. It seems so obvious now. Great work.
Imma start learning this today and update y'all of the progress everyday For context, I can already play some slow solos on the pentatonic scale, I only practice one shape properly, the a minor pentatonic. Only yesterday, I've practiced the G major scale quite a few times after watching another video of Brandon Day 1: Practiced G ionion and Dorian, just played it like a hundred times each tryna get my fingers used to it Day 2: Practiced Phrygian and Mixolydian just like day 1, not too fast either, 60 bpm where I play 16th notes Day 3: got decent with all the 5 shapes, now practicing them over and over again to be able to play them at 80 Day 4: pretty much the same as yesterday, didn't feel like it but got some reps in Day 5&6 : Didn't practice much, even the time that I did, I was just annoyed that I could barely hit 70 bpm in all modes when I changed the key, I'm thinking of going to 60 and go on for a few days Day 7, 8, 9: I haven't practiced scales but played some songs, it was a fun jam Edit: I don't even remember which day it is, honestly I haven't been practicing much either for the past week or so, idek when I'll get back to it
I knew most of this information already, but I still watched it just in case I could pick up something that I didn't know before. You explained the modes very well, but I would like to say maybe next time mention that Ionian is THE KEY. I remember when I started learning modes way back in the late 2000's that I was just memorizing shapes with no concept of what key I was in (mostly because I was just excited and I didn't fully understand what I was doing). No matter how many musicians I asked and how many articles I read about the modes, it took a long time to sink in that all the shapes were key-dependent. Also, ACCOUNTABILITY. All musicians are just athletes of the fine muscles groups. When doing physical training, accountability is crucial. Playing a musical instrument is awkward to the body because it's not a key component of survival. It's not something that's instantly gratifying like most everything else these days. It takes dedication to build skills just like it would take an athlete months/years to condition themselves. If you want it though, you'll keep working at it. Thank you for the video, Brandon.
Thank you this is very helpful and I am actually improving instead of playing a minor pentatonic and my three favourite riffs every time I pick up the guitar.
your Dedication to not sugar coating and just telling straight facts is awesome. I teach Guitar. If the student Really wants to be good, they will. They will use any means possible to achieve their goals. Ask questions, even if they seem dumb at the time. Learn songs all the way through, not just the intro. The amount of Hours and Dedication a Julian Lange, Mancuso, Steve Morse, Guthrie Govan, Nuno, put into their craft is because they love it
Nice job explaining modes in level 2. I find that the distortion you have set on your amp clouds the ability to hear the tones of each interval vs. If you just played clean tones.
Not ready for the a word you mentioned. You may be one of the best teachers I’ve listened to. When I get internet back I’ll give the 2 week challenge a try.
Brandon, you’re a Godsend. I’ve been wondering what modes are, and what the hell I’m supposed to do when trying to incorporate scales into my playing. Everyone just says to learn the scales and leave it at that. Thank you!!
I would have liked a visual of all the mode shapes at once for level 3, though I could just get it somewhere else. Anyways, this video is very comprehensive and you have once again given amazing advice! Your teaching style turns away those who aren't passionate for guitar and encourages discipline, which I admire. Rock on Brandon, you're a great teacher!
Im a student at UFRGS (Brazilian University) in Popular Brazilian Music (mpb) and this video is a 10/10 everyone should watch(and practice). Now GET OUT AND GO PRACTICE(sry for the bad english)
Idk if I should love you or hate you for making spreadsheets an everyday part of my routine but... this does work. I've combined this with your fret board memorization and speed practice for my daily routine for just about a month now and its the first time I've had noticeable improvement in a while. I've done theory classes before so it wasn't a foreign concept but this practice really helps you get a feel for where they are in each key, what the intervals are, etc... Takes it from being an idea into usable knowledge. Good stuff. Oh and I'm off the cigarettes too. Just leaving now.
The is the best, most understandable, and easiest to follow yt tutorial ive ever seen, and i love that youve kept the mess ups in it, makes me feel seen😂😂
coming back to this video to say thank you so much for this video. i’m finally able to improvise without feeling lost in any key, granted, more practice for some better execution is needed, however, i no longer have to guess about what notes i can use on any position of the fretboard. Thank you again Brandon!
Can’t help but congratulate you on explaining something that cripples music casuals so simply and concisely. Would be next level if you could play with a cleaner tone for that guitar but who am I to complain. It is what it is and it’s good.
I really love how funny this guy is when teaching guitar...really comical and makes the videos more interesting... Watching from Nigeria, Africa🌍 Keep up bro 👏👏
I've heard the modes explained probably 5 ways and didnt know what they actually were or how to implement them into my playing until this video. (Level 2 made sense)
Level 2 made sense and you explained it very well. You play the shapes differently than I know them (I’m a metalhead, 3 per string 100% unless I’m ripping pentatonics) your shapes are great and I wanna cop them
Watched 2/3rds of this. Found time to sit down and play, practiced the two Songs I am working through right now. Went to improve and noodle and started picking my way through whatever the E mode is in Cmaj and memorizing that shape I was finding. 2 note and 3 note per string. I still have no idea what this lesson what about or how to use it but it didn't sound half bad, didn't sound sad which where the song was leading but it didn't sound bad.
Level 2 made sense !!! Really appreciate the intense lesson really helped alot ! Keep coming back to it , and yes six strings on a slab of wood is my main source of dopamine as peroneal of your shorts. And notice the x ring.. why I trust you ..
Accountability: i have started guitar a while back , not more than 4 months , but i just started ACTUALLY trying to learn , i have downloaded your video and i watched it probably 4 times by now in the last 3 days , Day 1 : discovering wtf my guy is on about Day 2 : learning the major shape and practicing it till 4 am Day 3 : learning the dorian shape and practicing it for 3 hours
Day 4 : which is today , as in the day I wrote the first comment , I am practicing both the major and the Dorian with a 130 bpm metronome (with 2 notes each beat , so 260 notes/min) , I'm getting wayyyyy more comfortable with my guitar ( classical, though I'm begging my parents for a beautiful telly...) . Enough with the bs , I don't know the names of the notes yet , so I'll be watching that 5 minute video of the most epic guitar RUclipsr ( Brandon OFC ) and I'll keep ya informed by editing this . Well , this is the edit , it's 3:14 am rn , and I ever watched the video again, O ly the first part though, and I finally understood that practice routine BC I didn't understand shot at first , so yeah , I still didn't learn the notes on the fretboard, I did try, watches arround 3 to 4 vids about it , but realised it's not that easy ... I'll try my best to do it tomorrow, hopefully I get it done . End of day 4
Day 5 and 6 : day 5 I felt like absolute dog shit , as I saw a short of the best guitar RUclipsr ( Brandon d'eon OFC) that showed a lot of technical mistakes one can make , and guess what ? I was making all of those mistakes , it was discouraging as hell , and I even considered quitting, but I won't JUST LEAVE ! So I picked up my guitar ( classical btw... I hope to get a tele like my boi Brandon but I got no money...), enough BS , I worked in most of my mistakes , but one that I couldn't fix was my ring finger not rounding and smashing the strings , I was too weak , I'm still working on it Day 6 : more scales , I got better at the two first ones , and I added Phrygian , Im still learning it though rn , I'll work on it with a metronome after I learn it fully in 5 minutes , and I'll reply done when I finish it . Edit : done.
Here’s all 7 modes starting from C. 1) Ionian, CDEFGABC. (no alterations). 4) Lydian, CDE-F#-GABC. (#4). 5) Mixolydian, CDEFGA-Bb-C. (b7) 2) Dorian, CD-Eb-FGA-Bb-C. (b3-b7) 6) Aolian, CD-Eb-FG-Ab-Bb-C. (b3-b6-b7). 3) Phrygian, C-Db-Eb-FG-Ab-Bb-C. (b2-b3-b6-b7). 7) Locrian, C-Db-Eb-F-Gb-Ab-Bb-C. (b2-b3-b5-b6-b7). Play them. Listen carefully and sing along. Memorize all 7 formulas. That’s how to learn the sounds of the different modes. There’s 3 Major-sounding modes, 3 Minor-sounding modes, and only one with b5 that works over a Diminished triad (1-b3-b5).
This makes sense but I’m a guitar teacher lol. But I remember the biggest stumbling block for me was understanding the difference between playing the modes as shapes ,as a lot of books have and that’s helpful but doesn’t explain how the intervals play in to making the mode say A dorian vs G Ionian. So I teach them 2 ways or what I call learning the modes liner or parallel. One is all the modes shapes in one key the other is them all being played from the same root.
If you're confused by the modes, just ignore it. You can just learn the 5 major scale positions (which will contain every mode) and later you can focus on where each mode starts on this same exact scale. you're basically changing the root notes.

this is life changing, been playing 10 years and I am sick to death of the pentatonic scale
Appreciate the beating with a stick approach
Only getting through level 2 so far, the way you explain things along with the editing make it very easy to understand.
coming from someone who never studied music formally once
Level 2 does make sense, IT ALL MAKES MORE SENSE NOW!!!!
I have completed level 2, now I shall master level 2…
Your explanation of modes is simple and the best explanation I've seen. The practice routines are fab. You're quite funny as well. Excellent teacher. Thank you.
Ok diva… Level 2 explanation is the best of modes I have ever seen. I never made the connection between modes and starting position. It seems so obvious now. Great work.
Level 2 for melodic minor modes 3 notes per string passed successfully. Now, accountability for level 3, same scale modes.
Level 2 made total sense, now i have two twins i need to take care of. Lydian and Mixolydian.
Imma start learning this today and update y'all of the progress everyday
For context, I can already play some slow solos on the pentatonic scale, I only practice one shape properly, the a minor pentatonic. Only yesterday, I've practiced the G major scale quite a few times after watching another video of Brandon
Day 1: Practiced G ionion and Dorian, just played it like a hundred times each tryna get my fingers used to it
Day 2: Practiced Phrygian and Mixolydian just like day 1, not too fast either, 60 bpm where I play 16th notes
Day 3: got decent with all the 5 shapes, now practicing them over and over again to be able to play them at 80
Day 4: pretty much the same as yesterday, didn't feel like it but got some reps in
Day 5&6 : Didn't practice much, even the time that I did, I was just annoyed that I could barely hit 70 bpm in all modes when I changed the key, I'm thinking of going to 60 and go on for a few days
Day 7, 8, 9: I haven't practiced scales but played some songs, it was a fun jam
Edit: I don't even remember which day it is, honestly I haven't been practicing much either for the past week or so, idek when I'll get back to it
Me too I'll also start today
Im so glad I got back into guitar and found this channel! Ive been getting my chops back in record breaking time!
Thank you this is very helpful and I am actually improving instead of playing a minor pentatonic and my three favourite riffs every time I pick up the guitar.
Level 2 made sense. But I now do want that video on how to write songs with the different modes!
your Dedication to not sugar coating and just telling straight facts is awesome. I teach Guitar. If the student Really wants to be good, they will. They will use any means possible to achieve their goals. Ask questions, even if they seem dumb at the time. Learn songs all the way through, not just the intro. The amount of Hours and Dedication a Julian Lange, Mancuso, Steve Morse, Guthrie Govan, Nuno, put into their craft is because they love it
Level two made perfect sense.
Yess level 2 made sense after rewatching that part some times. Good job. I think I finally get it.
Level 2 made sense, is curious that I had different shapes for the modes and now Im combining them and it's like 🤯
Fantastic explanation of level 2! You explained it laymans terms, quick and to the point!
Your gimmick wasn't jiving with me at first.. But then you hit me with that lesson 2 knowledge. I'm in.
Brandon, you’re a Godsend. I’ve been wondering what modes are, and what the hell I’m supposed to do when trying to incorporate scales into my playing. Everyone just says to learn the scales and leave it at that. Thank you!!
LEVEL 2 MADE A LOT OF SENSE
level 2 made sense. i will watch it multiple times to understand it even better. honestly though i was so stupid i would never get it. thanks 👍🏻
Thank you so much for making this video. I've been struggling with the guitar my whole life and this is the video that finally helped.
Im a student at UFRGS (Brazilian University) in Popular Brazilian Music (mpb) and this video is a 10/10 everyone should watch(and practice). Now GET OUT AND GO PRACTICE(sry for the bad english)
Bro I think I got it!!!! Lesson 2!!!!!
Now I just gotta know what to practice to hone the skill n make it real n not just mental
this sick quality video and it's not some lifeless creator 10/10
Level 2 made sense, and I'm a beginner. I'll be back to practice. This is what I've been looking for. Thank you.
Thank god for the reupload
I was in the deadass middle of the lesson when you deleted it and i was so upset lol
coming back to this video to say thank you so much for this video. i’m finally able to improvise without feeling lost in any key, granted, more practice for some better execution is needed, however, i no longer have to guess about what notes i can use on any position of the fretboard. Thank you again Brandon!
Can’t help but congratulate you on explaining something that cripples music casuals so simply and concisely. Would be next level if you could play with a cleaner tone for that guitar but who am I to complain. It is what it is and it’s good.
As with most music theory, it definitely takes some time and practice for everything to sink it, but level 2 did make sense! Thank you!
This was so helpful and you are someone I can learn from. I'll be checking into more of your stuff
Level 2 made sense. I realize now that it never made sense to me before because I wasn't ready for it.
Now i feel iam moving forward with my guitar play, thank you.
I really love how funny this guy is when teaching guitar...really comical and makes the videos more interesting...
Watching from Nigeria, Africa🌍
Keep up bro 👏👏
Just had a "light bulb" moment with learning the modes. Really good explanation on how it all fits together. 👍
I've heard the modes explained probably 5 ways and didnt know what they actually were or how to implement them into my playing until this video. (Level 2 made sense)
Bruh!! This is the video I'm searching for... Level 2 made perfect sense!!!!
Thanks for your sharing your teach are clearly to easy understand I always watching your tips.
Level 2 made sense and you explained it very well. You play the shapes differently than I know them (I’m a metalhead, 3 per string 100% unless I’m ripping pentatonics) your shapes are great and I wanna cop them
Finally, an explanation of the modes that i understand!!
I really appreciate the re-upload man, I was worried I lost a good practice method. Thanks dude! This video is a gem!
thanks man, now i have a perfect road map to perform solos. And dont worry level 2 made total sence!
Great video Brandon! That's what a teaching video should be like.
I made it through Level 2 and understand it. I’m to live another day!
Brilliant! Easy to understand and very illustrative indeed. Thank you!
i didnt expect that level 3 was THAT hard
This is actually really helpful. I know the modes but never knew how to practice them. I stopped at level 2 for now to prepare for the exercises
Level 2 made sense !!! Really appreciate the intense lesson really helped alot ! Keep coming back to it , and yes six strings on a slab of wood is my main source of dopamine as peroneal of your shorts. And notice the x ring.. why I trust you ..
Accountability: i have started guitar a while back , not more than 4 months , but i just started ACTUALLY trying to learn , i have downloaded your video and i watched it probably 4 times by now in the last 3 days ,
Day 1 : discovering wtf my guy is on about
Day 2 : learning the major shape and practicing it till 4 am
Day 3 : learning the dorian shape and practicing it for 3 hours
I hope to get a tele like my boi Brandon but I got no money...), enough BS , I worked in most of my mistakes , but one that I couldn't fix was my ring finger not rounding and smashing the strings , I was too weak , I'm still working on it
Day 6 : more scales , I got better at the two first ones , and I added Phrygian , Im still learning it though rn , I'll work on it with a metronome after I learn it fully in 5 minutes , and I'll reply done when I finish it .
Edit : done.
Day 7 and 8 : more major scale patterns , one each day , and today I'll learn em all BC I'm tired ASF and I wanna get this done asap
Learnt the whole major scale now , YIPPIEEE ! time to practice 💀( " it's just a burning memory" starts playing 💀💀💀)
It's alright we starting together now
I like the fingerings you use here.
I memorized slightly different shapes, now i will learn to blend the shapes
Truly a man of the people
I am not used to theory concepts but this was really good amd easy to understand, i finnaly got what modes are thanks to this lesson.
Here’s all 7 modes starting from C.
1) Ionian, CDEFGABC. (no alterations).
4) Lydian, CDE-F#-GABC. (#4).
5) Mixolydian, CDEFGA-Bb-C. (b7)
2) Dorian, CD-Eb-FGA-Bb-C. (b3-b7)
6) Aolian, CD-Eb-FG-Ab-Bb-C. (b3-b6-b7).
3) Phrygian, C-Db-Eb-FG-Ab-Bb-C. (b2-b3-b6-b7).
7) Locrian, C-Db-Eb-F-Gb-Ab-Bb-C. (b2-b3-b5-b6-b7).
Play them. Listen carefully and sing along. Memorize all 7 formulas. That’s how to learn the sounds of the different modes. There’s 3 Major-sounding modes, 3 Minor-sounding modes, and only one with b5 that works over a Diminished triad (1-b3-b5).
These videos are amazing Brandon thank you so much
LEVEL 2 MADE SENSE
thank you very much for doing this!!!!
One is all the modes shapes in one key the other is them all being played from the same root.
level 2 made sense, bro iove your teaching style, very helpfull
If you're confused by the modes, just ignore it. You can just learn the 5 major scale positions (which will contain every mode) and later you can focus on where each mode starts on this same exact scale. you're basically changing the root notes.
I won't remember this for like a year, but it's a great explanation (level 2 made sense)
Can’t thank you enough for the video. I’ll keep practicing and then join your classes after sorting out my finances.
