Pat Martino’s “SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS” is his genius view of the guitar.
In standard tuning, both the 3-note Augmented triad (1-3-#5) and the 4-note Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7) are “symmetrical” in that each note is equidistant from the others (a major third, or a minor third apart).
OK- Now try this. Play C augmented on the top 3 strings; so strings 1-2-3 on frets 4-5-5. Now move each of those C Augmented triad notes down, one at a time.
    You will get a C, then a G#, then an E triad.
So 3 major triads from that Augmented “parental form”.
Instead of pulling a note down, push one up instead. Starting from that same C#Augmented triad (frets 4-5-5 on EBG strings), push one note UP this time instead.
Now you will automatically get A-minor, F-minor, and C# minor.
    - Now finger a Diminished 7th chord, top EBGD strings, frets 5-4-5-4
Now try “pulling down” one note at a time.
    You automatically get these 4 Dominant 7 chords: G#7, D7, B7, F7 .
(Tip: just quickly move the entire Diminished 7th “parental form” down by 1/2 step to quickly “see” all of the 4 related Dominant 7th chord roots.)
I believe that Pat Martino’s observations are worth investigating thoroughly.
    Pure genius!

Addendum: 1) those minor triads are the RELATIVE minors to those major triads.
      2) on the Dim7 form, if you push UP you get Half-Dim7 or min7b5.
      - So 6 other triads parented by each Aug.
triad; and 8 other 7th chords parented by each Dim7.- That’s the take-away.

His way at viewing the fretboard and the guitar itself is just mind boggling. Shows his pure genius and talent of his craft. Superb!

Why Lee plays over constantly Pat while improvising? Kind of disrespectful in some way....Pat is one of my all time favourite jazz guitarists. Consciousness is a masterpiece... Great loss, forever remembered....
