- Sri Lanka Street Food - Let’s give it a go! My 1st time trying!
My Sri Lanka First Impressions video ➡ • I Feel Overwhelmed! Sr...
There is a street food place here in Colombo, Sri Lanka that got recommended to me: Galle Face Beach. A popular place in the evenings for both locals and tourists. You can get Sri Lanka Street Food here. Many stalls selling different snacks, sweets and drinks. I really enjoy to explore the local cuisine in each country, so of course I had to come here in Colombo to try some Sri Lankan Street Food for the first time.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently in Sri Lanka, making Sri Lanka travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Sri Lanka. I will be traveling Sri Lanka, showing you around local places and try lots of different Sri Lankan food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Sri Lanka now from a more authentic local point of view.

You should definitely try Kottu, curd with honey and definitely a local rice and curry.
@@maniduhimasara8813 true try it
You must try kottu
chicken kottu
Try egg hoppers and string hoppers too
all the food you experienced in galleface beach are authentic sri lankan food except maggie noodles and milo drink. those prawn cakes are very popular snack among locals we called them as prawn 'WADE' . fruit you tried which had seed inside is sri lankan OLIVES. no one overcharged you in this video. when you travel across the country always use a tuk tuk with meter on or use pickme app or uber app. we don't call them rickshaws we call them three wheelers or tuk tuk. nice to see you enjoying our country and foods good luck and nice video... thank you ken
Thanks for useful comment.
Awesome, thanks for all the tips 🙌😊
In singapore and malaysia, vadai are quite common too.
@@akulegenda Yes and its a must in india and srilanka bc it is cobsidered as tamil food
@@akulegenda my regular favorite.
Seems to be locals are so friendly and honest even with tourist rather than scamming them “love to see that” respect ✊
Dude it's so amazing how Sri Lankan people are giving you all the local prices. So proud!
exactly machan. really proud of them
Actually, I'm surprised with this prices. 👍
6:20 - Prawn fritters (Isso Vada)
6:33 - Urid dhal fritters (Ulundu Vada)
9:30 - Sri Lankan Olives (Veralu)
12:10 - Cassava chips (Manjokka)
13:50 - Pancake (Lavariya - not the original which is made with string hoppers) The filling is coconut, molasses and spices
it's all authentic Sri Lankan street food.
And prices are also Local.
12:10 Casava = Manniyok = in sinhala Mangyokka
9:30 Sri lankan Olives is a fruit getting it after mature, but he eats one shud be veralu pickle
♥️ thanks for ur support
Sri Lanka looks really fun. And they speaks good English. I need to go there someday! Nice video, Ken.
Welcome.. akhi
All the students in Sri Lanka must learn English from grade 1 to 13. And also it essential to take a job
@@crazyfan1282 not the street hawker jobs!
'You're my first subscriber in Sri Lanka' LOL love that feeling :)! Awesome video buddy
Thanks for commenting ... now i found another youtuber to watch
People are so kind and friendly.
The good thing they speak English.
Enjoy Ken
Thanks Ken for showing us a little bit of Colombo. We were there over 20 years ago first of all, and we went to Bentota on the coast. The second time we went to Negombo just outside Colombo but didn’t enjoy it as much as the first time. Going up into. The hill country is a MUST! We visited the elephant orphanage, the spice plantations, and the tea plantations, along with Sigiriya and Dambulla, all worth doing. You will find the food quite spicy, and do try the toddy it’s a national spirit. It was very nice in a cocktail!
Ken welcome to the paradise on the earth, all snacks and foods that you find in the streets and local restaurants are authentic, Sri Lankan foods are no where close to Indian foods, Sri Lankans have their own way of cooking , totally different to any other nations and the best taste, 99.9 % fresh and never from frozen, there are so many types of foods and you will be spoilt for choices, you can try all as you plan to travel across the Island, just to mention few string hoppers, pittu , kiribath, hoppers, egg hoppers, Ceylon bread, kottu roti, veechu rotti, egg roti, rolls, patties, cutlet, malu pang, lump rice, Ceylon rice and curries, biriyanis , kola kentha, pol sambol, pol roti, ambul thiyal, kiri malu and list goes on... the yellow/orange coconut that you see is native to the Island and its called King coconut, there are other types of coconut too available, cinnamon is also native to the Island and pure cinnamon only can be found in Sri Lanka, Faluda is a type of drink originated from Persia modern day Iran but Sri Lnkaan have modified and added a different dimension to it, if you are to be in the Island till the end of March, we can meet up for a memorable trip to the south eastern coast of the Island, please mention how can I be in touch with you , I am sure you will enjoy the best of centuries old Sri Lankan hospitality wherever you travel, have a wonderful time in the land like no other. all the best. Aayubovan, Vanakkam.
He is best contacted through his instagram
Wow so many helpful explanations, thanks a lot 😊 and yeah best via Instagram, trying me best to read as many messages there as I can ✌
It's same as india.. Whatever you get in Tamilnadu and Kerala.. You have Srilanka.. May be a 20 % different
@@gopynathgm752 no it's not. it's completely different to india
@@vasanthasamaranayake1830 yes, Spices and cooking methods are different from Indian food.
When you in kandy try "hela bojun hala" these are food courts run by government, local ladies cook food on the premises. Very healthy and cheap. (only vegetarian). You can find them in most parts of the country.
Cool tip, thanks 😊
After living in Malaysia and Thailand for a long time, your tolerance of spicy food is at an elevated level. Ceylonese Tea is to die for.
I hope they can create sweet smelling cinnamon drink n food to help tourist promotion.
Cinnamon in most other countries are slightly bitter and nauseating fragrant cassia.
Echt traumhaft . Liebe Grüße aus Oldenburg
Klingt sehr gut 😊
I think we are all going to enjoy the trips around Sri Lanka. Keep safe.
So surprise that you can get Maggi noodles in food truck in Sri Lanka. The instant noodles is manufactured in Malaysia and it is something that we can easily cook at home, so we do not have it in food trucks in Malaysia. At 5:08, the objects flying in the sky are called kites. At 7:36, the man served you the cracker like cakes and he said vadai. It is an Indian spicy cake made from either beans or lentils and deep fried, so surprise that it is served with prawns and veggies on it. It is originally from Southern India, since the Malaysian Indian 's ancestors originally migrated from Southern India, this cake is now quite popular Malaysia, even among other communities in Malaysia. I love the cake too but we never serve it with prawns and vegies in Malaysia. I think seafood is very popular in Sri Lanka, but I don't think you need to worry since you have already overcome your fear of eating seafood. Congrats for getting your first Sri Lankan's subscriber.
i have seen videos of a lot of countries where they are oversharging, i appreciate srilanka as to how honest they are.... very impressed. \i wish to visit srilanka....
Sri Lankan foods are a combination of several cultural influences. Indian, Arabian, Malaysian,Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and also local. Foods in this videos are also a combibation of several cultures. You cannot say exacly which cultural foods are these. you will be able to see and taste more and more verieties of foods in the future. I would recomend you to tasete Kottu, Egg hoppers, Crab Curry, traditional srilankan rice and curry, coconut rotee with pork curry.
Do they Poutine in Lanka?
@@headlinesgenerator5426 this dish is not populer amoung locals. But I found few places arround colombo in google maps.
When you say Indian, it’s closer to South and East Indian. North and West Indian cuisine is more wheat, daal and dairy based.
@@user-cp3wc5yj3g thats true. 👍
srilanka food are the best and the most rarest. actually what sinhalese make is rare but idk about others
Happy to see you in Sri Lanka.I have been there twice. Lovely country. beautiful places to visit and lots of exotic food to try. I'm sure you could find some similarity with Malaysian food.
Oh mate, you're in for a treat! I hope you enjoy the rest of your 90 days here to the max. I think that's a good enough time to spend visiting the beautiful landmarks and beaches. A warm welcome to our little island home. I'm looking forward to watching your other videos! Enjoy!
Try Kottu, Hoppers and String Hoppers! Those are authentic Sri Lankan food as well! And also try some local curries
very beautiful view ken, by the beach with sri lankan flag and a sunset in the background.
Ah excellent Ken, seemless transition. Most of the Sri Lankans appear to speak English pretty well as a 2nd language maybe and that makes things easier for you. Really enjoyed this vlog. Looks like you are up and running mate. Noted that you have already picked up on a few words and phrases. Well done :)
It was part of the UK, it’s a member of the common Wealth. Virtually everyone speaks English, it’s easy compared to Thailand.
Love the video. I’d say the food in Galle Face beach is typical of the street food you’re going to see in Sri Lanka. If you want a memorable experience, check out the ministry of crab (owned by Sri Lankan cricketers) for a luxury experience to Sri Lankan cuisine. The restaurant is altered to cater for foreigners but it’s definitely worth checking out.
If you want a local experience, check out pillawoos restaurants that you can find throughout Colombo. Cheese kottu is a big recommendation
The food in sri lanka is delicious. Try it all. Super country. And wonderful people 🇱🇰❤️
Thanks you i am srilanka
Try cool drink of milo in sri lankan grocery stores. I live in Canada, whenever i go back to my home country of srilanka, i buy a carton of cold milo drinks. My children love it so much, we even buy a box of it and bring it to Canada.
15:30 it's the fast food version of Sri Lankan food.
Sri Lankan authentic food is basically rice and curry
If you haven't tried Milk Rice give it a try in the morning !! Love your style of videos and honest reviews 👌 As a Sri-Lankan I can agree with everything u said !
Try "Hoppers" "String Hoppers", ' "Kothhu Rotti", "Kola Kandha". (Toast paan) with coconut sambol.
I think we call the "String Hoppers" Puttu Mayam in Malaysia. Not sure what "Hoppers" are, or "Kothhu Roti". I think Paan is the folded leaf with the areca nut inside, right? Turns your mouth bright red...
@@iskandartaib" paan" is bread in SL. I think you are referring to to "bulath" ( beetle leaf, with areconut)
@@travelbugtravelbug5501 VERY interesting. In most parts of India paan is the leaf. In French "pain" (pronounced "pan") is bread (and I'll bet it's also something similar in Spanish, Portugese, probably even Italian), so bread is also "pan" in Japan. Is "paan" sinhalese? And a Portugese loan word? Not sure what the proper word for bread in Tamil is, here we just call it "roti". The northern Indian tadoor bread is called "naan".
You better try a lot of dishes here in srilanka. Mainly string hoppers(indiaappa), pittu, kottu, friderice, plain hoppers egg hoppers, thosa, idly white (kekulu)rice and fish curry and many more
Jedes deiner Videos ist so besonders. Wir freuen uns darauf, mehr zu sehen.
Welcome to Sri Lanka...It's called "Three Wheelers"(Not Trishaws)
Enjoy my city Colombo and all over Sri Lanka..Lots of Love 🇱🇰💞
They didn't over charge you at all...Normal rate which we locals pay...You gotta visit at night..It's super interesting.. Children will play kites..Lights around..More night stalls with rotti and more local based stalls.
Those fruit pickles are called "Acharu"..It's popular all over the Island...You tried some local dishes...As I said above u will find more stalls @ night...❤️
Cheapest mode of transportation in Sri Lanka is 1) Train , 2) Bus , 3) May be Bike service ( Available only in few places ) , 4) Three wheeler and list goes on :)
Thank you very much 😊happy to be here

Try Lampraise, a rice and curry packet wrapped in banana leaf, An authantic dish of Sri Lankan with Dutch influence.
Another great video. Don't miss the beautiful train trip from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya when you explore Sri Lanka.
Your videos are giving credit to Sri lanka tourism, thanks, you’re doing great job to rebuild sri lanka tourism.
Ken you are so polite, humble and like to help local businessess.👍 Have you ever tried WOODAPPLE juice. You also can eat it like a fruit. Enjoy and stay safe.❤️🙏
Many people love to travel the world and document their experiences. That's what life is about. Having fun and enjoying life.
Respect from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Hi Ken, I am a Sri Lankan who came across your video series. Keep it up! You are doing all the right things as a tourist and I find your videos very entertaining. As some of the other commenters noted, other than the maggie noodles and milo drink (falls under the Nestle brand) are Sri Lankan street food. However, if you want to try out non-street Sri Lankan cuisine I highly recommend you try out 'Upali's by Nawaloka' restaurant, which is located in Colombo 07, and also `Nuga Gama`, which is a restaurant at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo hotel, both of which I have personally tried out. Even though I am not sure if these restaurants would fit your budget, I feel they give the best experience of what Sri Lankan cuisine is about. When travelling, Sri Lankans usually use tuk tuks, but should you be in a situation where tuk tuks cannot be found (late in the night for example), it would be better if you could download the Uber and PickMe ride-hailing apps (they have tuk tuks to small cars to large cars). If you need some guidance on what places you should visit in Sri Lanka, let me know! I'll be happy to help :)
You are so nice 😊 very polite person. Love from Sri Lanka ❤️🙏🏻🇱🇰🔥
Welcome to Colombo Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 🍻 Wht you have tried most of day to day Sri Lankan street snacks like ISSO WADE( Shrimp 🍤 cracker),

Well , those are typical Sri lankan foods and they didn't over charge you. It's nice to see you are enjoying...💕
Thanks for visiting Srilanka
Galle face green is a park for everyone. All kind of citizens come there to relax. And lots of tourists too. Children been brought here by parents for them to play. You can see lots of kits in the wind . Once a year kite festival is held here . you get lots of different food here try everything. Few dinner serving open air restaurants will start after the sunset. Try at NANA S . They are pioneers. Nobody will charge you extra. Same prices for all when it comes to food and drinks. But entrance tickets to many places foreigners has to pay more.
Other than that every thing for everyone is fixed price. All products has to Shaw there prices. .
It's nice to see you mingle with locals. Have a wonderful stay in this beautiful friendly island.
Keep going all the best ❤
I love my country Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 ❤️
Actually It is Sri Lankan food, when you are trying those foods I feel jealous, Lucky you enjoys it.
Things brings back so much memories for me . I wish I can come back visit again.
The food you had at the seaside looks authentic traditional Sri Lankan food. Maybe it’s snacks.
The time you have visited gall face beach was not the real place we used to be visit. Those green colors mini shops were restaurants now closed due to Corvid. They offer various taste of seafoods with naan rotis etc please visit again once everything restored the Country is having tough time. Thanks for visiting us may God bless you
Dear Ken, If we don't say Thank you, it won't be a sign of humanity because you are doing a great job making a video about Sri Lanka. Actually, this is like a promoting program about my motherland. So Thank you, gentleman.
Hi Ken, thank you for showing the us how Sri Lanka Street food like...and glad you have good memories of your stay in Malaysia before.
Feeing home sick and these videos are a perfect antidote….

It’s mostly snacks , yellow pancakes you get everywhere in SL but maybe not the prawn fry thing those pickles fruits you get everywhere too , pricing they are charging you local price which are fair what you paid
Sri Lankan beautiful country,,,,
Sri Lankan foods are good,,,,,,
Sri Lankan people are very friendly...
thank you, Commagene
15:30 Answer is that those foods are just snack items and chilling with a beautiful view. In Sri Lanka yous should try Sri Lankan rice and curry and the most popular food is "Kottu" there have many varieties like roast chicken kottu, Vege kottu, cheese kottu, dolphin kottu (not dolphin meat lol).
Finally yes ken you got the local price that is the good thing entire videos for as a Sri Lankan :D
Its getting better and better Ken. Someone earlier mentioned the curries, have a taste. Im sure it tastes fantastic.
That sunset was awesome.
Bro.welcome Sri lanka ❤️ 🇱🇰
Always interesting to watch your adventurers!
Hi Ken 👋🏻 this is awesome , trying all the street food whenever you found one 🤣👍 very interesting place where there are lots of food vendors at the beach 👍 amazing panoramic view of the sunset 👍 you are very generous and thoughtful Ken always pay extra , anyways hope you had a great time exploring the street food there take care 🥰👍
In SL u can have various experience from low to upper class based on how much money u want to spend. Where u r now which is the street shops r the lowest level of food u can have there. It’s cheap but I assume it’s nice experience. I’m from Australia and been there a few times. But never tried street food. May be next time I will. Enjoy the trip mate.
Try milk rice with lunumiris , kottu, string hopper, coconut sambal with bread, for curries, crab curry, fish ambul thiyal, eggplant moju, tender jackfruit curry, mango curry, gotukola sambal, papadam, hot butter cuttle fish ..and many more... with rice
Ministry of crab restaurant is popular , but bit expensive , if you go to "The station" restaurant you can have best seafood dishes for reasonable prices..

At Galle Face food was the normal prices
but you paid too much for the Sri lankan t shirt
things in Sri lanka to eat
Biriyani
Lamparise
Thosai
wadai
hoppers
String hoppers
A general rice and curry
Khottu etc
please try the fruits
Woodapple
Soursop (crusted Apple)
We have many types of bananas
Mango
Rabutan
And if you drink Alcohol try arrack
Loved the wood apple smoothie, which is available only in Sri Lanka near the jungle or forest of Kandy. Must try, Ken.
Soursop is easily available and very cheap if you go to local or whole sale in Dambulla. Soursop is a super fruit and is very expensive in many places. There are lots of avocado and custard apple (similar kind of fruit to soursop) in Sri Lanka too.
They charged you with local prices, Ken. This is a very good thing about Sri Lankans. Iam a Vietnamese lady living in Colombo for 5 years. You cannot get that price for food at the beaches in VN.
Can you try sri lankan best foods Kottu, hoppers, crab curry, and lot of foods.❤💕🇱🇰
Good Luck!! Welcome To our Country!! don't think about more than people very goods 85%, Blessing Triple Jem!! Gods Blessing!!
Sehr spannend Dich begleiten zu dürfen, ein ganz anderes "Pflaster" im Vergleich zu Thailand. Good Luck! Best wishes
it is wonderful to see many of these vendors in Gallface gave you a real local prices for all the items Ken, so they actually have treated you like a local, Good luck enjoy that beautiful country with some of the real innocent honest people
The sri lankan olive is called “veralu”.. try some egg hoppers, coconut roti, sri lankan rice and curry with polos… kottu roti, egg roti, and there are so many 🥰
Love from sri-lanka🥰
I've got so many memories in and around Galle Face, man. Nostalgia galore! Thanks for the video, mate. Freaking miss those "isso wade"

What a lovely place, everything is very cheap, as a Thai a quite surprised, love it ken.
Hi Ken, You got to try Pol Sambol, Black Pork Curry, Jaffna Crab Curry, Beetroot Curry, Amabarella Curry, Jackfruit Curry, Mango Curry, Gottu Kola Sambol and Vambutu Moju ( Eggplant Pickle). Also try our Sri Lanka Muslim Style Biriyani its one of the most unique in tastes.
Love from sri 🇱🇰
It is very proud moment for srilankans and also I suggest there are gem markets as well in Srilanka
how cool!!
Did you try egg hoppers?
Milk rice with " Pani Pol" ( coconut chutney cooked in honey wich you have tasted here with the Sri Lankan pan cakes. )
And authentic sweets like " Kalu Dodol" , "Kavum" ( known as oil cakes), " Mun kavum" , " Aasmi" , Kokis , " Pol Dosi" ( coconut rocks)
Try some Sri lankan bakers such as Perera and sons, Sensal, Fab outlets. Their food has European touch but with more of a Sri Lankan twist. Fresh and clean. Famous among locals.
You better visit places like, Colombo museum, Douch museums, craft stores like Barefoot outlet in Colombo, Laksala outlets, Lak Pahana with good market located in the same premises.
Don't you go to ancient national heritage sites like Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa?
Hope you will have a great enjoyable tour around Sri Lanka.
