  • I Was Told To Avoid These Buses In Sri Lanka - Bus ride from Ella to Bandarawela
    Video about the scenic train ride to Ella ➡ • Sri Lanka 3rd Class Mo...
    I heard a lot about these local buses in Sri Lanka. I was told the drivers are driving crazy, they speed a lot and you get motion sickness pretty fast. Still, I was curious to experience a local bus ride in Sri Lanka. So, I started a journey from Ella to Bandarawela. Join me on this bus ride in Sri Lanka…

    I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently in Sri Lanka, making Sri Lanka travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
    You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
    There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Sri Lanka. I will be traveling Sri Lanka, showing you around local places and try lots of different Sri Lankan food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Sri Lanka now from a more authentic local point of view.

    Few things
    1. The seat you sat (right behind the driver's seat) is normally reserved for religious persons like monks and etc (in any religion). Anyone can sit there but when such a person gets on the bus normally he or she is given that seat.
    2. Normally when the bell is rung, the bus will stop the most nearest next bus stop. After the people get on and get off the bus at a stop, the conductor (the person who gives tickets) rings the bell (once or twice) signing to driver "Ok let's go".
    In case of an emergency, you can ring the bell continuesly. The bus will stop and everyone will look at you... ! 😄

    The bus drivers who operate on these routes are very familiar even with the people who ride their bus in a daily basis, then they oblige by dropping them off at the point closest to their neighborhood because these people have to walk miles to their homes. I have asked the bus drivers many a times to drop me where I need to be dropped off. Upcountry drivers have road discipline and are safe particularly because it’s a dangerous and windy routes. They are conscious drivers. Enjoy the hill country. The place is breathtaking

  • @SLtraveller98

    Well, you travelled from a Government bus. Government bus drivers drive safely when comparing to private bus drivers.

    • @rukshandezoysa6171
      @rukshandezoysa6171 2 года назад +22

      Yes. Private drivers are former lorry drivers carrying chickens, cattle, pigs to slaughter.
      They have no regard to the passengers.
      They have no education.
      They were living in jungles before they got driving license.
      They speak foul language.
      They are hot tempered
      They are ever ready to get into a brawl.
      They don't care about road rules.
      They don't care the police.
      They don't care for the passengers inside.
      They don't care the safety of passengers.
      They go very slow killing passenger time if they want.
      They also go very fast , reckless , if a Government bus is following them.
      This is called the Sri Lanka bus culture. It's unique to Sri Lanka.
      It might be a tourist attraction in the future. Because travelling in a Private bus in Sri Lanka amounts to a roller coaster ride in another country.
      All they need is Income.
      Passengers can go to hell.

      @@lostgirl2798
      I travel in private busses everyday. 99% are like the way I described. Conductors are also no better. They complement the drivers.
      To drive a vehicle :
      He should be disciplined
      He should have patience
      He should follow rules
      He must have basic education (OL)
      To drive a passenger bus he should be :
      Mindful that he's carrying people.
      He should not enter into a race with CTB busses.
      Private drivers cannot judge the speed of the vehicles in front because they apply brakes every 5 seconds. Why ?
      Because they can't judge the speed of the vehicle in front. Suddenly they realise it's too close , and immediately apply brakes, causing discomfort to the passengers. This happens every 5 seconds.
      They accelerate very high as if they have to beat all vehicles on the road.
      They sway the bus , it's easy with the hydraulic steering.
      Total disregard that there are people inside. These drivers have never travelled in a bus when they were small boys. I think they travelled in bullock carts. They have no idea what passengers go through when they apply brakes always , sway tge bus and sudden acceleration.
      I blame the Government for giving driving license to hooligans and risking the lives of passengers.
      Bus drivers license should be a special license. Not the normal heavy vehicle license. Normal heavy license, he can drive a Tipper or container. Not a bus.
      Bus driving should be different.
      It's the don't care attitude of Government as well.
      Government knows people travelling by bus are poor people and foolish too, so don't bother about them.
      CTB drivers are disciplined. They don't go fast unless the road is clear.
      There is a big difference between travelling in a CTB and Private bus.
      CTB drivers have some education, they are not jungle boys. They speak politely. Speak good language. They are Mindful that these are people in the bus , not cattle.

      @@rukshandezoysa6171 why are you so rude towards bus drivers lol. I know what you are saying is true. I hate those bus drivers too. But everyone is not like that and what the hell are you keep repeating they are not educated and jungle boys. And according to you people who are travelling in bus are foolish people. WOW.......what kind of mindset do you have my friend. ....

    When someone rings the bell driver stops the bus at the bus stop... Then after the conductor rings the bell driver starts to go... That's how the bus system works... We should ring the bell a few distance before the stop that we need to get off 🚌

    In my experience in Sri Lanka, bus drivers in the upcountry are more disciplined than in the low country drivers. Sloping, winding roads are dangerous and they do not have races to catch passengers.

    • @ude3333
      @ude3333 2 года назад +2

      That's because they don't have the liberty to drive like maniacs on the winding mountain roads.

  • @kingsexploits
    @kingsexploits 2 года назад +12

    That was a CTB bus and they do not drive crazy like the private buses. These drivers are well trained and they respect the rules and people they carry. The conductor of the bus rings twice to indicate to the driver, it is OK to leave now and passengers ring twice when they want to alight the bus. Always ask the bus Route number from someone who speaks English and that would be easy for anyone to find the right bus in a place like that.

    Those orange coconuts are called king coconuts. There are several verities too and the age and environmental conditions affect flavours. Some are very sweet, some are more salty with lots of electrolytes. Some give you a tingle in your tongue which I assume is from partial fermentation. Bad ones are usually full of tanning.

    Bus rides on Sri Lankan coastal roads can be quite scary. It's a good thing that the roads mostly don't have long straight stretches for buses to build up speed. Scary bus rides are a worse experience if you sit directly behind the driver as you can see the impossible overtaking attempts etc. It is best to sit further back so that there is less awareness of the crazy driving - 'ignorance is bliss'. It also good to avoid the back seat as it is the bumpiest ride. The worst & scariest bus ride I ever had was in Karnataka, India.

    These buses reminds me of what we had in the 80s or early 90s..... Travelling using the local buses like the locals.....After extensive travelling around Malaysia, Thailand & now Sri Lanka, your tolerance towards spicy food, fish or seafood has definitely been much better than before..... In other words, exposing and experiencing different cultures, trying out different food has made you more adaptable in any situation.... Glad to part of the journey....As always, stay safe, be vigilant.. Take care on there...

      These type of mini buses are bit rate here in Sri Lanka..You can't easily see a bus like this here in Colombo...These are used in rural areas(a bit slow + these usually doesn't travel between cities ) that too functioned by the government :)

    1.10 the fish cost only 41 rupees, which is 80 Malaysian cents. That fish would cost 15 Malaysian Ringgit = 700 Rupees in Malaysia.

    • @KenAbroad
      @KenAbroad  2 года назад +3

      I think he said 700 though and not 70. Think there might was a misunderstanding 😅

      @@KenAbroad yes mr.ken , that fisherman didnt know how to pronounce 700 rupees. He meant 700 rupees. That is the price of 1kg of Tuna fish in Srilanka.

    • @user-fl8om7yb3l
      @user-fl8om7yb3l 2 года назад

      Actually that fish was not a tuna , traditionally called ATAWALLA , fresh tuna is usually exported , only lower grade ones sold here and those are too bit expensive ,may be around 800 to 1000 rupees

    What a vibe by Ken exploring the cool mini bus ( a rare bus in cities, you could find these type of buses mainly in rural areas ) ❤️🤛🏼
    That fish might be Rs.700 per Kg most probably.( he didn't know the numbers in English )
    Btw what I like is that you can get off the bus whenever you want where it is the vice versa here in Colombo, Sri Lanka 😐
    Waiting for next 🇱🇰❤️:)

    Ken , survival tip, try to avoid sitting on the same side as the driver as in most accidents passengers on that side get hurt/ killed Also in an empty busvavoid the seats reserved for clergy and pregnant ladies as you will have to give up your seat if the bus fills up later and they get on.
