ELAN RIPSTICK TOUR - Glen Plake's Pro Model Ski | SKI REVIEW

  • This is the most alarming touring ski of 2022/23. Honestly, I thought it would be terrible. At first glance, it just looked like a lighter, more fragile Ripstick. I’m seldom happy about being wrong, but this is my confession of glee. Elan has had an incredibly successful run with the Ripstick line, but just as things started to slow a bit, the 104 Tour entered the frame. This ski boasts a large turning radius, with stability to match. Speed was my number 1 area of concern, but even on icy, blown-out pitches, I didn’t have the gall to push it past it’s limit. Shame on me for thinking that Glen Plake’s signature model ski would be something less than impressive. My only complaints are the size limitations (only down to 166 - throw a 158 in there) and the fact that these have left and rights. The benefit isn’t lost on me, but it’s unnecessary.
This is one of the best-looking skis of the year, and a far cry from what a typical Elan product looks like. Props to the graphic design team for making a colorful but tasteful top/bottom situation.

Bought them two weeks ago; switched my Marker Kingpin 13 from my 2022 96 Ripstick to these jewels (replacing them with Elan/Tyrolia Attack 14); now awaiting snow to try both Ripstick Tour 104 while touring and 96 with their new bindings on grooms. Anyway I’m very proud of my Elan artillery. Glen rules! Fantastic review that makes me pray for snow to come back in Northeastern North America! Happy 2023 skiing year to everybody out there!

How do you like them? Was going to buy another set of ripstick 96's for touring too ( have dedicated 96's for the resort with Attack 14's), but want a tour specific setup hence the tour 104 with some ATK bindings. Thoughts?

@@AdamDeRose Adam, as my 2023 season is closing to an end, I can now testify that GP RT104 are simply the thing! Frankly, as they’re designed for very efficient climbing and overall big big fun in descent, I can’t ask for more from a ski. Big difference in ascending with R96, as RT106s feel feather-like in my feet; my 17 years old son is now always lagging on me (but he does climb with Bent Chetlers 120)! By the way R96 and Attack 14 are just a fabulous blast in resort! Go for the popsicles without any hesitation, mate!

@@algojeff Thanks so much! Yes I came from a Blizzard Bonfide and got the Ripstick 96 w/ Attacks this winter, they are the best ski Ive been on, upped my skiing game dramatically - just scanned day 35 on the frontside! I'm going for the tours then! I'm currently on 2010 K2 Obsethed with Fritschi Freeride Pros, almost 8 pounds each ski/binding!! I have the tour 104 on order, have to grab some larger brake ATKs instead of the 97's I have.

@@AdamDeRose Just so cool Adam! Exactly the same from me: I never ever progressed as much on skis. Switching for Ripstick and Ripstick Tour was/is a revolution for me. And I’m finally mastering those Kingpins, after a difficult adaptation, so ski life is now perfect!

Curious on sizing, I'm 6' 210lbs and ski aggressively, and I enjoy long turns and I really work the flex on a ski, looking for a one ski quiver. The sizing on these at the elan site suggest I should be on a 180, which seems very short to me. Also do you think the cast system would be a good match for this ski as I normally keep my din between 12 and 14 and find some other binding setups limiting on the upper range. Mostly slackcountry and 1 or 2 day tours in the Rockies. If not this ski from elan, which? I had my heart set on the Dyna M-Pro 105 which is a different animal, so maybe I'm all over the shop here but how can I not consider Glen! Woot woot!

Matty, I’m 6’2 225lbs and I bought the 180. If you read my entries on this tread, you’ll see that I was spot on the target! 180s in big forested pitches full of pow. Love my Glen to the bone!

If you haven't yet, dont be afraid to size up. Im your size and i rode the 187s, they ride surprisingly small and with their lightweight you wont feel hindered at all.
