    As an owner of the current 88, i like seeing the increase in shovel stability. I like what the 88 does, especially on the early days in the season where my legs arent as build up as after 15 or 20 days. However, and i know that's a really strange comparison, i grab my Mirus Cor more frequently and it outperforms the Ripstick in nearly every aspect (for me, entirely skier dependant, i'm an lightweight aggressive expert). It's more confident in crud and soft snow, the shovel just plows through everything, it's more consistent tip to tail, does not get deflected as easily, it's the better carver, it's as nimble as the Ripstick and weight isn't dramatically off of the Ripstick. I attribute most of these things to the (too) soft shovel of the current 88, and seeing them improve that aspect will provide skiers with an overall better choice and experience, without any obvious downside or taking away accessibility.
    If there _ever_ was a moment to add an 88 Black, it's now! It'll fit in perfectly with the new shovel and smaller step up in overall stiffness.

      Skied your Mirus Cor, and with a 13.0 Radius, they are slalom racers ! The 96 Black Edition will make you a believer with a radius of 16.2 and quiet shovels ! They kill in all conditions.

    For the past five years I have demo'd different versions of Elan's ripstick and believe it's the best ski I have ever skied. Haven't had the chance to try the New Playmaker, but if you’re looking for an incredible ski, I highly recommend the Ripstick 88! I was on this ski last year along with some Black 96s and really love both of these. For groomers, icy conditions, and all-around skiing, the RipStick 88s are Super light and you can really lay these down and will make you a better skier! Just learned fro you that my NEW 2025 RipStick 88s now have a bit more (90) under foot.
    If you’re looking for a ski that can actually make you a better skier, I highly recommend you try the RipStick 88 and 96 Black Edition skis!

    I would love to hear more from Bob, or even the groomer guest test guy, as the taller bigger guys comments are not covered nearly enough, I think real life testers at different sizes, weights and ages helps a lot.

    I wish this video was out over a year ago. I tested the 96black at the resort. Loved them. So I went on a goose hunt for some deals on Ripsticks. Found 106’s on sale, picked them up and they feel totally different on the snow than the 96. Kinda bummed. Can’t wait to try the 102. And maybe the play maker 111

    Love the current RS 88 for frontside carving, and playing in the late day crud. I am 5’9” 185 and loved the 172. Are the new 88s any different carving and playing? What length would you recommend with the new model length difference. I just tried Wingman CTi and thought that they were great for carving but not nearly as playful or good in afternoon crud. Trying to decide between this year’s model and the new ones. As always, love your reviews.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  7 месяцев назад +1

      I find the new 88 to be more playful and eager to finish a turn. I like the added versatility of the taper and slightly wider waist and tail. That said, I personally prefer the slightly straighter old version, but mainly because I enjoy the 188 in that ski and haven't yet skied the 189 in the new 88.

    This video is very interesting. I have been on Elan skis since I started 4 years ago. Currently on a Wingman 86 TI 178cm, which I feel has helped me progress quite a bit this season. I like the on piste feel of the Wingman, but am looking for something that will allow me to venture to the side and maneuver better in tighter areas like trees.
    I have been intrigued by Ripsticks since the beginning, but was concerned about how they cope with chopped up afternoon snow. As a 6'1" 180lb progressing intermediate that skis exclusively out west (85% on piste) a few times per year, I am wondering how the new Ripstick 88 or 96 would compare to the Black Crows Serpo or Atomic Mavericks.
    Also, if there is any other ski out there that is stable in chop/crud, maneuverable in tight areas, and approachable for a slightly less aggressive skier that I should consider, I am all ears. Your reviews set the standard, and we are all so grateful for your contributions to the community. Cheers!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  7 месяцев назад +2

      The Ripsticks are very easy to use in chopped snow, but they do not excel in terms of performance. The Serpo and Maverick will hold up better at higher speeds as those are more stable skis, but they're also more demanding. The nice thing about the Ripstick is that it's very fun and playful in a lot of different zones, but it's not terribly rugged when it comes to challenging snow conditions and terrain. I think you're in the right spot with the Ripstick, and I'd lean to the 96 for added width.

    Considering Stockli SR88 and Ripstick 96 Black. I’d appreciate your advice. I skied the Kastle MX89, then I got the newer MX88 model both in 180, but I sold them last season and started riding Faction Dancer 3s 183, thinking I wanted better all mountain and width, but clearly it’s not the ski for me. Even on front side, it’s a lot of ski for me (tall but lightweight). Simply, the Dancer 3 is way too much ski for me, and I felt the MX88 was a bit too much ski in the bumps, but awesome to rip on the groomers. The last two seasons I started doing a lot more bump skiing as my son is a bump monster. However, I’m still a front side ripper at heart.
    I’m looking for a new one ski quiver that can hang in the bumps, the crud, the trees and still have ample front side high speed grip. I ski exclusively West Coast (Vail, Tahoe, Whistler). Thanks

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Месяц назад

      The Stockli is nice because it has a lot of the same versatility of the MX 88 but with a lighter and quieter character. An amazing carver for sure, but also is accessible in bumps, crud, and trees. I fear you won't get the same type of on-trail personality that you want out of the Elan. If you're a front side ripper at heart, the Stockli is a considerably better option without leaving too much off the plate when it comes to versatility.

    Huge Elan Fan...Knowing Jeff seems to be on the fence of the Regular and Black Edition 96's, I can say with un-equivocal certainty, that skiing in the East, especially Mt. Tremblant and Sugarbush, that the need for a super strong ice grabber is as important as a playful mogul masher. The Black Edition covers all bases, and has the added pop when flying down the groomers doing the turn and burn. The regular Ripstick 96 is wonderful, but a touch more chattery when ripping, and not as strong on biting the ice. My other go-to is my Stockli Stormrider 95's but as wonderful as those are.....and they are wonderful, Elan offers a better overall Freeride/All Mountain experience with the Ripstick 96 Black Edition.
    With that said......Great reviews, Great Chairlift Chat and T-Bar Talk....keep it up ! Wonderful to watch you guys review and ski all the time ! Hello From Mt. Tremblant !

    Is there a weight difference between Ripstick 102 and 102 Black? The website shows the same weight, but wondering if that is a typo since there is extra carbon and rods?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  16 дней назад

      Keep in mind that when you add the rods, you're removing wood, so it's a neutral weight change. I just put both the 102's on the scale and the Black Edition's pair was 30 grams lighter than the normal 102. Basically they're the same weight.

    Guys, i’m a similar size to Jeff but now in my 60’s. Get to ski say 2 weeks a year and looking to replace my 9 year old camox (i know !) Back then these had a flat-ish tail so now likely to up to mid 70 length from 168. Love sound of these Ripstick 96, also rustler 9 and of course camox. In reality mostly on piste, occasional itinerary but always go off the side on the few days there is fresh. I go nowhere near to a park! Any thoughts/recommendations?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  27 дней назад

      The Rustler is the easy choice especially when you're looking for rounder tails. Nice to have the metal along the edges in the Rustler with the increased rocker for softer snow. Easier to smear than the Camox and a smoother carver! Ripstick is nice and light and agile, but doesn't have the same overall sturdiness of the Camox or Rustler.

    I’ve been watching all your reviews, great content. Thank you! I’ve been torn between a few different skis. I always ski with my kids so northeast groomers are a huge focus. I’ve considered the rustler 9’s, ripstick 88, 96, and 96 black. Low end intermediate. Given the conditions I ski a ripstick 88 is a good bet but at my weight (250-260) would a 96 or 96 black better support me carving NE trails?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, the slightly wider skis in your group will provide better support. I do think the Rustler 9 is a great choice if you already have the Ripstick 88. The metal in the Rustler is very supportive, not heavy or demanding. I'd lean that way.

    Welp crud . I just bought a brand new pair of 2024 96 blacks 172cm. How much of a change did the BE's get for the 2025 model year?? Sounds like more stability, less vibrations and smoother? Also better and more accurate sizing (175cm!) as I was in the middle. 5'9"/155lb. Ugh.

    I'm looking to add a 100+ to my quiver. Currently ski a Stockli Montero AR as my daily driver and love them but want a fun off-piste ski that is on the lighter side but still responsive when I am on-piste. The new 106 black looks interesting. I also have an original Enforcer 93 that I have pretty much ditched this year for the Montero. I'm 6'1", 250#. PNW skier. I would say advanced/expert. Recommendations?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 месяцев назад

      If you like the overall style and feel of the Montero, I'd at least give the Stormrider 102 a look--that ski is similar to the new 102 Black Edition from Elan, but with a stronger tail and a smoother overall ride. For a bit more heft, but not too stiff, the Salomon QST 106 is another easy winner.

  • @smau990
    @smau990 7 месяцев назад

    Way it looks 106 got turned into 108 and the 102 just jumps in between. Wonder what the change in flex does to variable snow handling in backcountry. 143mm tip will float allright but if there's steep ice in the mix. I tried to look, 106 had probably widest tip of any 105-108 ski out there.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 месяцев назад

      The new skis have more flexible shovels for sure, even the Black Editions. This means that less aggressive skiers will have more success in variable conditions and terrain, but harder chargers may find them to be on the soft side. The older (current) 106 Black Edition is the best of this group for faster skiing through adversity.

    I'm interested in a ski to complement my Brahma 82s, which are my dedicated hardpack skis. I'd like something softer, lighter, more playful, and more smeary for use in bumps and trees, but which can still rip some turns reasonably well. I was interested in the discussion of weight and how that affects your experience on these skis. I'm about 165lbs, and the Ripstick 102s seem like they might be good for me. Anyone have thoughts on what other skis I might compare them against for the purpose stated above?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  7 месяцев назад +1

      There's a lot to like in the low 100's, especially if you look at some of the more twin-tip shaped skis. Even within Elan, the Playmaker 101 is worth a look, Line Chronic 101, Atomic Bent 100, and Dynastar M-Free 99 are great options. For more directional skis like the Ripstick 102, I'd check out Fischer Ranger 102, Salomon QST 98, or within Blizzard, the Rustler 10.

    Bummer to see the 106 and its additional burliness over the 96 go, but nice to see Elan address the stated length issue by going straight pull. The outgoing gen tended to measure ~2.5cm shorter than their stated length. Did they address the width issue (beyond the 88), i.e., no longer measuring 2mm narrower than the stated model? Also, a little disappointing to hear that the skis got lighter. I really liked the shape of the outgoing 96 BEs, but found they had a limit and would get knocked around in chop and crud. If they put metal underfoot like the Wingman instead of additional carbon in the BE to get around 1800g @ 182 per ski, they'd have a killer ski for us 180lb + folks.

    Been skiing Elans for decades, never been disappointed! The last 2 seasons I have added wider all mountain 90ish 177ish 2 sheets of metal as my daily driver. However….as I rotated in my 74 under foot Amphibio’s , 168, I cant help realizing that the tighter skis are for me a lot more fun as a side of trail short turn specialist here in the northeast.
    I see that Elan has added in the Primetime series. The Primetime 55 looks like a ski right up my narrow alley on the 8’ edge of the trails, and also ripping the full carve GS 50mph turns. Have you guys skied this model yet? From my days out this season I know I’m going back to the narrower all mountain frontside Northeast groomer and leave the wide boards for snow storms as rare as that can be here in Vermont 2024.

      If you like the tighter arcs in skis, the Primetime 55 is sweet. We skied them last year and thought they were great. I'm not sure about the full GS 50mph aspect, but it's definitely a great short to mid-radius carver.

    How would you compare the 2025 Ripstick 88 to the Armada Declivity 88C? Mostly looking for snappy edge to edge transitions with energy coming across the fall line at decent speed (not interested in smearing/slashing, prefer to be on edge). The increase in Ripstick stiffness this year sounds like it brings these closer together.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 месяцев назад +1

      The Armada is still stiffer and more responsive from tip to tail. The Ripstick still has a pretty flexible shovel, and while that's great for easy initiation and softer snow performance, it's not as reactive on firmer snow. If you're looking for more edge grip and energetic transitions, I'd go with the Declivity 88C.

    Glad I waited - happy to see a 175 length in the 88 and that it's a bit wider underfoot. Guessed I was in between sizes in the previous version with many reviews saying the 172 measured and skied shorter. Thanks for the review.

    This review gave me a pause. I was about to add Rustler 9 as a final piece of my quiver which currently consists of Mirus Cor and Enforcer 88. I am looking for a ski which can deliver Enforcer's feel but at lower speeds as well as off-piste. Is RS 96 (regular) that ski? Or should I stick with my original plan? For reference, I am 5'9" 165 lbs, higher level advanced skier, wouldn't call myself an expert. Thanks for your help and great reviews.

      I think the Rustler is the place to be, splitting the difference between the Mirus Cor and the Enforcer 88 in terms of heft and build. I'd stick to the original plan unless you want something considerably lighter.

    Great info filled vid guys!! Looking to pick up a set of Ripsticks for Utah to add to the quiver. The current 106 compared to new 102 flex pattern has really changed….. Im still leaning towards a current 106 black in a 188 (6’0, 190lbs, aggressive, advanced skier). Owned a set of regular 88’s for on piste days and found myself pushing their limits. Am I on the right track?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  7 месяцев назад

      I think aggressive skiers will still like the current 106 Black Edition skis as they are stiffer and more capable. The new 102 is more flexible.

      @@ericaminoff I have both of these skis: 2022 Ripstick 88 and new 2024 Wingman black edition. Apart from the fact that both say "Elan" on them, they are quite different. The Wingmans are like a set of railroad tracks bolted to your boots. They are also a lot heavier. They are somewhat playful and like being tossed in the air a bit off small bumps and such and perhaps carry that aspect of the Ripstick series over. And - in a pinch - you can see them in deep snow, but you have to be really really delicate, because they will hook up, especially the tails, since (at least for me), you will end up very rear biased weight wise because they are so stiff and won't float like a Ripstick will. However, the only Ripstick that comes close to the Wingman BE in terms of "on trail" high speed stability is the 106 BE.
      I love how easy the Ripstick 88 is to ski. However, my biggest complaint with my 88 Ripsticks is that they lack stability at top speed (compared to the stiffer Ripsticks). It will be interesting to see if the new 88s can manage to keep the fun and maneuverability of the outgoing 88s while injecting some additional top end performance into the ski. The outgoing 88 is awesome in bumps, low snow depth tree skiing and "a few days old" chalky snow.
      Lots of interesting stuff in the new Elan lineup this year: almost makes me want to refresh my all Elan quiver (the above, plus 106 BE and 116) , but honestly, it's working so well right now, it's hard to imagine switching out a bunch of these models, just because there is something "newer", though the Playmaker 101 seems pretty cool. The outgoing 116 is a monster ski - super fun and very very surfy in deep snow. I'll look forward to the reviews on the incoming 108 and will probably go demo a 102 BE just for fun. I agree that the outgoing 106BE is a charger ski: awesome in crud and while not as stiff and damp as an all metal charger ski, you still need to be on top of it since it's a fairly aggressive ski. Do you guys think that ultimately the playmaker 111 will actually be the direct replacement for the outgoing 116 (more so than the incoming 108)?

    I demo'ed that new 96 black edition. I can't compare to the previous, but had a lot of fun on it. It was definitely hooking more easily into the carv than the old version of the 88 which I demo'ed just before. Both were clicking more with me than the wingman 86 Ti. Did you try their new primetime line?

      We tried a Primetime 55 last season and thought it was great. It's not a hugely popular line here in the US, but we'd love to get on them more--not very available for us.

    As always grateful for your videos!
    I’ve been skiing the 106 as my daily driver for the past few seasons and absolutely love it. So much so I purchased a pair of 116 this season to replace my previous powder skis.
    I love the playfulness of my 106 (188cm) and the only thing that has me considering replacing them is a desire to charge a bit harder on-piste.
    This has me considering:
    - 106 black edition
    - 102
    - 102 black edition
    Curious to get your thoughts. For reference, I’m a 6’ 200lb male living and skiing in the BC Rocky Mountains.

      I think if you are looking to move to a harder charging ski, the 106 Black Edition is the way to go. The new 102's are more flexible and not quite as amenable to powerful skiing as the current 106's.
