Remember That Time Gibson Changed Their Headstock? (...and made a new pickup?)
Today, we talk about the Gibson Les Paul DC Pro - a unique model that used a short-lived "straight pull" headstock style. Many say this was to complete against PRS as they were picking up steam - and if so, PRS won that fight. Either way, the DC pro is a unique piece from early Gibson custom shop history that came in some cool finish and spec options. 24.75" or 25.5" scale and early ones had 57 Classic Neck pickup and the 97 Classic in the bridge - a short-lived pickup name. Later ones had the 496r/500t set, but a wrap tail + p90 version also exists.

It's a PRS...with the pickups closer together! That flame top in blue with the ebony fretboard....so gorgeous! And I kinda like the headstock.
Cool guitar for sure
The best gibson solid body I've ever played was my instructors double cut. He always liked to tease me I liked it because it was basically just a PRS
You might as well say that the PRS are Gibsons, just a bit higher in quality and a lot higher in price.
SG was also a Les Paul, for a very short time.
We know, but thanks
Hey, Suggestion, use a spirit level on the neck to assure the guitar is flat and then measure the headstock angle.
Or get a second Klein angle gauge; when the one on the fretboard reads zero, take the headstock reading.
Trogly
To read your headstock angle more accurately...
Lay the guitar down. Angle doesn't matter, just that it remains stable.
Then use your gauge on the fretboard only. On the wood, or sat on top of two frets. Write that number down.
Now move your gauge to the headstock, and write that number down.
Then all that you need to do is subtract the smaller number from the larger number, and you have your headstock angle.
Great channel, thank you for all of your knowledge!
I wish Gibson offered long scale options. We who down-tune often, can benefit from the string stability associated with the long scale. Ü ♫
25.5 for life
the dave mustaine les paul should be pretty interesting for down tuning
If you want the single-cut LP style guitar with a straighter string-pull, consider a Heritage H-150.
The wraptail P90 for me by a million miles
Rory Gallagher did a million miles on a strat 🙂
Yeah, for some reason I think the DC style looks better in the 'P90 loaded slab body' Junior/Special configuration!
Man, I was so sure that the "Classic 97" pickup was gonna be a typo, amazing find.
i think that 97 classic might be a typo, they probably meant 57 instead
Except it says “97” in grease pencil on the back.
@13:00 You could replace the 3-way with a 5-way toggle to make better use of the 4-connector pickups.
If you haven't seen one before look up Fenders Elite Flame. It's an 80s double cutaway. It was my dad's final gear purchase before he died a year or two later. I taught myself to play guitar on it.
I loved the one I had. Made a mistake and sold it back around 30 years ago. Fortunately, the guy I sold it to is a great friend. He sold it, bought a Fender Esprit and an Eastwood Esprit. He decided I needed the Eastwood and gave it to me. Way better than the Fender, but not worth nearly as much money.
@reno145 I could never sell mine. It's the most sentimental thing i have of my dads. His gears all i have to remember him by since I have zero memories of him. I repaired the original fender case which had 2 broken hinges. The white has aged beautifully. I was surprised to find out years ago that there were khaler loaded versions as well. Not a khaler guy so I'm happy w the fine tuners. That espirit tou got has nice block inlays.
Ive totally come around, when it comes to double cut Gibson's....thanks trogly! For making want another model i didn't previously care about.😢
That semihollow goldtop looks like a Wolfgang.
*I like the department store/QVC sounding music playing softly I'm the background, I'm getting the warmth of nostalgia.
Definitely time for a reissue.
Either Gibson or Epiphone or both.
Just add another volume control.
Epiphone Double Cutaway DC PRO Wild Ivy has all the coil-splitting and out-of-phase circuits for $600, and it is a nice looking guitar too, but no strait pull headstock. I would like a comparison video if possible.
I have 1 Mojave burst sweet piece & I only paid about 5 for it.
I almost got one but i got an explorer instead
Love the snakehead design and shape.
I wonder if this was a late attempt at the Fender Esprit, which I think is an overlooked gem.
The humbuckers and stop bar for me the blue finish is beautiful 👏👍🤘
It wasn't the banjo, they were the A mandolins in the early 1920s that had the snakehead
I would really like to see Trogly do a comprehensive video of Gibson pickups from the last 30 years. Talk about magnet type, resistance, whether it has even or uneven coil winds, which side has more winds if its uneven, etc.
0:51 Yes, a la PRS, the strings have a straight-on pull through the nut when positioned like the "snake" headstock pictured on the right (the new Gibson flame double-cut).
Great sounding middle position!
Gibson also made a 25" (not the normal Gibson) scale before PRS made it their "standard" scale length. Can't remember the name of the model that Gibson did this on though. I'm sure Trogly will know! (I think it was one of their extremely high end Archtops from the 50's and 60's)
the les paul dc body is just gorgeous, imo. wish we would see this come back in the US lineup
The big takeaway here: Gibson multiple times has addressed the supposed design flaws of their classics.
But, when was the last time you saw even a regular headstock LP DC, much less one of these "improved" versions?
I used to look at these in 90s MF catalogs, alingside Hamers. I don't like the PRS as much. But even knowing they existed, it's very rare to see them in the wild.
Everybody claims they'll buy the 6 speed manual transmission sport wagon, yet few pull the trigger with their own money.
When I first saw this model in a catalog back in '97, it did become a Gibson model I would've liked to own. I'd get one if it was cleared of the structural setbacks you mentioned here, Trogly.
In a limited fashion, Gibson may have inadvertently introduced the straight-cut headstock. It began when they unveiled the Flying V in 1958. The strings may not cut straight from the bridge across the net to the machine heads, but they almost do. There certainly seems to be a little less tension on that model than any other Gibson predating or postdating this one.
Damn I love the 97 classic, especially the middle position
Reminds me of the old Pat Martino model
Nice guitar . Love the strange ones. Please bring back fender Friday!!
Seconded!
Firded.
I've seen photos of the snakehead design on 1924 L-3 and L-4 "The Gibson" guitars.
Trog! Speaking of the PRS headstock! You should see the 1st prototype! He did a video on youtube. The headstock was way more devilish. With like horns or hooks coming off the corners. Looked sick, but the horns kept breaking off so Paul changed the headstock to the modern style. It would've looked sick on an SG body!
That neck pickup with dirt is outstanding!
Regarding the headstock tilt, most of those angle gauges can be set to zero reference. So you'd place on the fret board, hit zero and then place on head stock. The reading would be the difference between the two. I guess like a kitchen scale when you can zero between adding each ingredient
I remember seeing these in stores when they were new. Not a lot of love back then, but they’re absolutely amazing guitars.
I never knew that a “97 Classic “ was even a thing. I thought it was surely a typo!
The Zeppelin riff sounded awesome in the middle position!
Still don't like the headstock regardless of string pull.
Average Headless guitars Enjoyer
I love the 24 frets. I am always partial to that. Love the P-90s with the wraparound too. What a combo of features.
This guitar slays on Zep's "Ten Years Gone" - that's some nice tone with the dirt on.
I always wanted one of these. So cool and different.
Evening all!!
I liked the balance of those two pickups. Bridge was warm but the right amount of grit. Sounded really good to me!
Oh ya thank you Trogly informative Ep. Peace bro
That headstock angle measurement is easy. Most of those meters have a relative or zero function. You put it on the neck, press zero, do not move the guitar, then mount it on the headstock and it will tell you the difference between the neck and heastock. If it does not have that function. Measure the neck, do not move the guitar, measure the headstock and calculate the difference.
0:02 what episode is this guitar?
@Trogly I don't know man, that's a beauty all the way around + I thought that 97 classic when you did the Zep really sounded like what JP was doing on that lead. I loved this piece. Thanks as always
I’m dying for a 2003 DC Classic in either P90 or HB. They only came in gold. Trogly, if you ever get one for a documentation video, I’ll grab it from you right after.
Are there different radius Tunematic bridges available? That’s actually something that I could utilize, but have never looked into
Is that brass frets ? They look a bit tarnished like brass does. Good clean job o the fret board . It wasn't looking to good before. I think with the knowledge that the bridge pickup being a 97 classic and being able to coil split if wired correctly with the right pot that I'd have pursue making that happen. I like how chunky them tuners are on the headstock. Had you tried putting the guitar in its case and measuring the headstock angle?
Dig that blue double cut!
@trogly it doesn't matter what the neck angle is at. Set the angle finder on the frets. Reset to zero. Place on the headstock, read the angle.
That's a nice double cut
Yeah I've found fretboard radii don't always exactly match the gauges. For example, my CIJ Fender Jaguar Bass is supposed to be 9.5 inches, but it's actually fractionally more rounded than that, maybe 9.25.
Wonder if those Plek machines could give you a dead-on measurement?
I’d totally get one, should be an option for people who like a traditional/mixed with modern to get the best of both worlds. Cool video, didn’t know they existed.
That's a sharp looking guitar love the color and pattern and blue back. Would love to hear the P'90 version too
I belive I remember hearing about the 97 pickup and I always heard it was there very hot pick up
Awesome! I love it. DC and a straight headstock. I wish they still made it.
97 had to be a typo
Gibson Mandolins used a similar headstock called the Snakehead in the 1920’s Lloyd Loar era, considered the best era of Gibson mandolins. Those are closer to this headstock shape than the banjos
There was a similar thing with one of Alex lifeson’s guitars, the ES-369…
I wish they'd gone with the swoop of the ES-369 headstock instead of the mini open book. Less goofy and it would have been a reflection of the double cutaway shape.
Awesome tones, turn that thang up Trogly 😊
Wish they’d make ‘em again
I wish I'd bought one back in the day.
Much better headstock IMHO. Love the Double Cut design. Hamer Guitars also had a headstock design similar to the ES369 style....slightly straighter string pull featured on their DC Guitars.....the early ones were called the "Sunburst"!
I like it, would be cool to see it brought back at some point
Gibson should put Explorer headstocks on everything. Heads would explode.
Thanks!
Sounds great.
This was the original Gibson Head Stock
To get a better reading on the headstock angle thingy, you could set the guitar down flat on the fretboard with the strings off and put the gauge on the back of the headstock as Gibson headstocks seem to be the same thickness front to back.
I wish they would make more guitars with this headstock, especially in a USA run
Are there still any Gibson auto-tunes on the market? I can’t find one anywhere.
Been hunting down a DC Standard myself. Most seem to be the amber.
Really like the part afteR ...looks collector (stashed) owned. Then, ya got clean-up, w/ some of bit brissle flags on fretboard close up. With interval showing(9:30), then, bringing true restore.... Just looks nice. Great survivor! Whoosh! TaDa ! they gone . . .
It's cool but I mean, I would just get a typical LP
Thank you❤
It sounds beautiful! I remember seeing a review at the time where they reviewed this with a current les Paul of the time and they said this blew it out the water… I agree, this sounds awesome.
Gibson should offer something like a SG SnakeHead special, or LP Junior SnakeHead, for maybe about a $50.00 up-charge. I'd buy that.
If I remember correctly, the DC Pro was going to be a Robben Ford Signature Model. I don't recall what happened with the relationship. Maybe someone here knows or remembers.
Snakehead is part of Gibson history. Used on L3 and L4 back in the days. Superior when it comes to tuningstability...and used by The Heritage guitars today:)
nice colour
One of the best Les Paul variations that Gibson ever produced. Sounds good too. Gibson should bring those back.
Couldn’t tell from the video but my angle gauge can be zeroed at any position and will then read the angle relative to that angle. So long as the guitar doesn’t move it should be a good reading.
Or put the neck on your neck rest, read angle on head, read angle on neck, and subtract neck angle from head angle.
Interesting....I absolutely enjoy playing the DC style guitars... I have a Mojave Epiphone DC Pro...such a good player... however I noticed the headstock is not the straight string pull... it's still beautifully bound. Was that a custom order to get the straight string pull?
F$ckin gorgeous, Trogly. Double-cut Gibsons are my favorites, and I never knew this make existed before. Now… to come up w an unallocated $4K 🤔
Nice fiddle!
Those look like they were inspired more by the Hamer Studio Custom than a PRS.
having 24 frets and the choice for scale length omg. then p90 or hums and wraptail options
find the long p90 wrap..
the volume placement is perfect IMHO.
by the time you get to the bridge the radius will be 14"
the pickups sound like a regular set you might have in an SG but a ceramic potentially in the bridge. it sounds hot but not.
hard to comment on the neck pickup being in a 24 fret setup. it is a really good guitar
I like it a lot! Although I'd prefer 22 frets.
It’s actually kind of funny, PRS Mark Tremonti pickups are 2-conductor neck, and and 4 conductor bridge with the extra wires taped off, just like this!😂
Trogster getting his 10 years gone on 🤘
I think the radius is 10-14
Heritage had been usijg a variation of that headstocknsince the mid 1980s
These DCs have always interested me. I like the way they look and there is definitely an advantage to having 24 frets. That particular case is really nice too.
The one that's in the true not the faded one is it a re-issue of a re-issue or was it one just never did see the light of day?
Yes! Thank you very much for mentioning that PRS ripped off the Mark series headstock. I’ve been putting together a video discussing all of Paul’s Gibson ripoffs and that’s one of the things I make mention of as well.
I used to have two of the LP DC’s but with the regular headstock with trapezoid inlays. Great guitars
Maybe this should be a future reissue? Looks cool, so make it a USA production.
Warmoth has a “Vortex” headstock that has great string angles compared to traditional Gibson angles, and as Ibanez has started to embrace it on their recent acoustics, I’m hoping it makes a comeback specifically so I can put bigsbys on everything without consequence. 😅
Imho the double cut is the best les paul
I'd love a double cut with a axis carve and modern hardware
Tape a tiny snake tongue on the end it lol.
Nice choice with 10 yrs gone. Always liked these but an a PRS guy.
