    thanks for that list of European folkloric creatures at the end - too often Japanese yokai (and culture in general) is presented as wacky or zany, but you're right, it's more to do with media exposure than anything else (that's one of the reasons i loved Until Dawn so much - the wendigos made it!!) on another note, i'd contest the idea that there's a direct ancestry between atmospheric 60s films like Onibaba and the J-horror boom of the 90s-00s, but it's an interesting thought! thanks for a great and informative vid =]

    Hungarian here. Small correction: the owls male appendage is made of copper, thus its called the Copper D*ck Owl. Yeah. Unruly children are told that if they don't behave, they will be taken by the owl and will be either severely punished or eaten by it. Possibly both. The owl "might" be a very warped interpretation of the Copper/Iron Nosed Hag, more popularly known as Baba Yaga.
    There is a local variant of the bogeyman where I live, called Sime Suma (I do not think it can be translated, sorry). Sime Suma scares and terrorizes misbehaving children as well (see a pattern here :v). The more you act out, the more outright evil stuff it does to you.

    • @ProperBird

    Finally got around to watching this. I was gonna say, the game you talk about at the beginning seems like it'd be limited to rich people, and then you mentioned that it was turned into a game by Samurai, so that checks outt.

  • @cord113
    @cord113 2 года назад

    My introduction to this sort of lore was a Fighting Fantasy choose your own adventure book back in the 80's called "Sword of the Samurai". In one part of the story if you make the mistake of staying in a village you get attacked at night after the heads of the villagers detach from their bodies and come after you. In another you need to get past a group of Kappa in order to cross a river. You can do this by knocking them down to spill the water in their bowl shaped heads which prevents them from breathing and forces them back to the water. It's funny how these stories evolve and stay alive. :)

    I'm Hungarian, and yes. I heard a lot of these stories, as a kid.
    Like the Kutasbéka (Well Frog), who is a large Frog who lives in wells, and pulls children in to drown them if the look into the well.
    I also know the Rézfaszú bagoly, athe Owle with the large metal man part you mentioned. Interestingly enough, while yes, today it is depicted like that, originally it was different. The word "fasz" meaning penis now, originally ment the fathery tail of birds. So originally it ment an owl with brass tail fathers. But as language has a way of doing, the meaning of the word changed. Today it means penis and people forgot the original meaning, so the Owl got a manpart...
    There is also the Frász, what is a small, ugly creature that jumps down from trees and scares people to death.
    And the Man with a bag, who takes bad children away to beat them, work them to death than eat them. ,

  • @JohnnyElRed
    @JohnnyElRed 2 года назад

    Yeah, it's weird. Even if Western studios tend to look out for Yokai more because they probably feel more exotic, and vicecersa, there definetly is a lack of originality in that regard. Hell, the only western game I have played in recent times with some variety in that regard is the Ruined King. And even then, it's not that much, and half their designs were pulled out from Legends of Runeterra. A game than on itself only had that much variety, because they really needed to fill out the card pool somehow.
    Althought, in the department of inventing weird monsters, one has to give them props for the Shark Chariot. Is a riot just to look at that thing.

    • @ProperBird
      @ProperBird  2 года назад +1

      I googled Shark Chariot and... wow, I would pay to have that in more games.

    A dullahan game would be interesting and it's a bit sad that some real true stories got mix up in with the made up ones and ppl never takes caution about supernatural things when they really need to, cant never be too certain about anything in life or u will regret it bc: "Karma is a bish"

    Uuuuh, i am the ghost who makes noises in cinema at the best scenes and whoooooo spoils the plot uuuuh.
    Seriously, make that. I know chainsawman has the futuredevil thats basically that, but it could be a yokai.
    An hy donr western sudios use weird mythologival creatures of everyday? Probably hintoism plays a role there, but still, why not, germanic and even weirder slavih folklore is so weird.
    I mean some stories are still told because ther are till monster roaming the jungle in the night that take cakeles children, becau human taficker and organ harvester are in the area :( , but you cant tell a kid that so, uuuh spooky monster.
