You are a master artist and teacher andthat is rare. I have watched this vid 10 times and each rose gets a little better. Appreciate your generous spirit. More petal vids please!!!
Hi Dave, I just wanted to say thank you for being such a patient and caring teacher. Your art and tutorials have really inspired me to explore painting in a new way. Today I had a break through after months of pure frustration. Anyway, I appreciate you. Thanks again!!!
God knows how much I appreciate your teaching, explanation, colors, setting,....., and the beauty of your painting !!!! I am so glad to have the opportunity of being here and have the chance to see your videos. Thank you so much !!!!!
Great inspiration with the subtle differences on highly controlled techniques and more free style techniques - and I love the phrase “ always paint for movement” and for artistic purpose “ each rose has to have its own personality” - “ no two roses are the same” -
Thanks David for sharing such a beautiful demonstration of roses... I am definitely going to try out painting some of those ...you are a wonderful teacher ....thanks once again
So far I have been painting ugly blobs. But, I know that if I persevere, I’ll someday soon catch on. I am so inspired and impressed with your teaching! Carol
I picked up a paint brush for the first time 2 months ago. I have a lot to learn! You’re an awesome teacher and I thank you so much for videos. I’m a bit confused about the bowl and shadows. I’ll continue to watch and paint. Thanks again.
Hi Roy, I have a playlist called "How to correct Roses" Watch that one. There is a video in there where I show in great detail how to petal a rose and the bowl. That may help. ruclips.net/video/4LodVht8WVw/видео.html
I have been a decorative artist for 25 years and roses have always been my nemesis! I recently started watching your videos and have to thank you for all you do to teach us to paint these gorgeous roses! If I end up able to paint them even half as good as you, I will be the happiest woman alive! Again, thank you sooo sooo much! I pray you have a truly blessed day!
As a newbie painter, I am soooo glad I found you. Not only talented x 10, but you're a fantabulous teacher..thanks millions....onward to next video (Petal to the metal)
Thank you Dave for the plethora of vids to help us eager artists!! I would love if you could share you fave art books as the history of the artists and their techniques are quite interesting. Your passion is clear from your extensive book shelves. Love it!!!!
David you have a very gentle touch with that brush too. Thank you so much for all your efforts, not easy for some balancing the colour, movement, brush touch and petal placement without making it look stiff and amateur 🥰
Thank you Joy. Took a lot of practice and time. In the future I will show some of my roses from few years ago and how much I have changed. Lots of practice and trail and error.
David another great teaching video. This is so helpful now to practice, practice, practice. I love hearing birds, dogs and crickets 😊. Say hello for me to Martha. Enjoy being back in the east.
Thank you. Especially about 30.30 on the video where you almost slow motion calligraph beautiful petals with explanations. I could see very well your movement, the brush angle, everything we usually can’t see. 🌈🌹👍

Thank you so much for the awesome video! So inspiring. I know what I'll be practicing this weekend. Great work. Thank you for making this available to us
Always a great video! You're so right about needing to hear the same thing over & over until it sticks in our brain. You have a knack for re-explaining & re-demonstrating each video so that the information feels fresh but still familiar, keying our memories & linking the knowledge. 🤗 I'm curious though...what do you do with all of your practice paintings? I know I've seen some framed on the wall of your studios in the background, but do you keep each one, give them away to friends as gifts, or sell them?
BRILLIANT!! JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! Would you do just a drawing diagram for us, of the bowl, center...IDK I just want to paint like you do!! Roses just flow from your paintbrush :) even when you were wiping out the paint in the beginning with the paper towel, it looked like a rose AMAZING!!

This is just what I need to start to paint a rose! Think I'll watch it several times to absorb so much helpful info. You explain so well the steps and I really appreciate your empathy of a beginner. I love your soft roses. The 3 layers is very helpful to picture. I don't have a canvas yet but do have watercolor paper to practice with...Is that ok to start with? Thank you for your teachings!

Mosty is does, and it is a good way to think that way if your just learning. As you open the rose or it gets older the postion will change a bit but what your saying is a good way to look at it.
As usual - wonderful - one day when you have time, would you consider painting a "blue moon" , I wonder how many blues you would use and what other complementaries you would use. thanks '
David I started painting at age 72. I am now 76. Do you think there is still a chance that can paint just a tenth of how you paint? Am very diligent , paint practically daily , but I just can’t seem to do this petaling !!! Am frustrated !!
Could be your technique or also the products you use. A lot has to do with habits you may have formed in your first 4 years of painting. You can fix that, just take practice and trying new things. Yes, you can learn really fast. I have some students who have been painting 4 months and are making awesome roses. Just need to find the techniques that work with your brush. 😃
Right now I teach on the internet. I don't teach in my studio in PA any longer. My online classroom is at jansenartonline.com The only seminars I do right now with the covid are in our large building in Sidney Nebraska and limited to my online students. Thanks so much.
When I thin my paint, as you illustrate, it becomes transparent. What am I doing wrong? Love your tutorials! Just bought two of your books...gotta figure this out. Lol
Hi John, I thin my paint to make it a little transparent. It all works together. Could be the amount of paint your putting on the surface in relation to the amount of paint your stroking. I can but blue roses are really real. The one that comes closest to it is more of a lavender color. Most blue roses are dye white ones. Might be fun to paint though!

Dear David - you really hit the nail on the head with how you describe learning. It is a real challenge to let go and just relax and paint.
It is so true. The main problem is we all fall into a "copy" mode and it makes the roses a little stiff. Better to just relax and paint 😊
Wonderful
