On my G the copper crush washers on the AT drain plug are the same as the one on the oil drain plug, I order a 20 pack and replace them each time I drain and it helps get proper torque and a good seal. Once the washer is fully crushed it is tight enough and no worries of stripping out the pans
Thanks for the tip. I am about to change the transmission fluid again next weekend and will grab some washers. Although the old one worked fine last time, no leaks, and I never over tighten it either.
My 2010 FX35 doesnt have a dipstick... dealer said my trans oild is supposed to be LIFE long (Life of the transmission).... its been 177K miles and i have not had my transmission services, but i think i should take it in. I dont have any issues at the moment but wondering it i should go and spend 500.00
Havent changed my my transmisson fluid either on my 2008 g35 with 189k miles. Im gonna do it too just drain pan and fill with 5 quarts thats it after a few cycles should be clean again. Never trust the stealership ok
I would double check if theres no dipstick then you might have to pump it back in. Id ask a transmisson shop before anything. Someone would builds transmissons would lead you to the right direction.
Better than before. Although I wasn't having any issues before hand, I noticed that my shifts were a little rough (thought it was normal, since it's a sports car). After doing the fluid change it felt better, shifts smoother. But again, I did the fluid change as maintenance, not because I thought I had a problem.
Thank you for the video! Can I ask something about my 08 g35? The car I bought was 87k 6 months ago now it’s 90k. I didn’t find any records that previous owner did the transmission fluid change. I really want to do it but Should I? Will the gears slide if I do that?
I bought mine with about 70k miles and did the transmission fluid change at about 90k. It shifted smooth before and still shifted smooth after. I consider it a maintenance item.
Thanks for the super helpful video. Cant believe my mechanic want over $350 for this simple work lol....I am just curious why you didnt check the dipstick level prior to draining. I know you measured the quantity etc., just thought the dipstick is a good estimate of the volume
Correct, this is a fluid change (about 5 quarts). Vs a fluid flush which replaces the majority of the fluid. From my experience it is better to do fluid change every 30k but you should check your manufacturer’s recommended interval.
The factory service manual says to drain and fill 3x to do a full replacement. That's what I did first time but now I just do a drain and fill. Last time I did it the fluid was still bright red and clean
I was about to do it for a 3rd time last month. Checked the fluid dipstick and the fluid is bright red! I decided to leave it, I'll keep an eye out in another 20k miles or so. So far the car STILL shifts like new.
When you flush that’s how much you have to do . If you remove the full pan pretty much everything empty out removing the value cover pretty much empties everything out
Appreciate the video. I have a 2007 g35x auto, having trouble reading the dipstick. I know to check the fluid warmed up and running but the dipstick itself is confusing. Any idea where the level should be when hot (in between the notches or in the hash marked area)? Not much info online.
You can check it both cold and hot. To check it cold use the back side of the dipstick. One side says HOT, the other side is used by looking at the two indents at the bottom of the dipstick. Here is what the Service Manual States: A/T FLUID LEAKAGE AND A/T FLUID LEVEL CHECK 1. Warm up engine. (see temp at #4) 2. Check for A/T fluid leakage. 3. Loosen the level gauge bolt. 4. Before driving, A/T fluid level can be checked at A/T fluid tem- peratures of 30 to 50°C (86 to 122°F) using “COLD” range on A/ T fluid level gauge as follows. a. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake. b. Start engine and move selector lever through each gear posi- tion. Leave selector lever in “P” position. c. Check A/T fluid level with engine idling. d. Remove A/T fluid level gauge and wipe clean with lint-free paper. CAUTION: When wiping away the A/T fluid level gauge, always use lint-free paper, not a cloth one. e. Re-insert A/T fluid level gauge into A/T fluid charging pipe as far as it will go. CAUTION: To check A/T fluid level, insert the A/T fluid level gauge until the cap contacts the end of the A/T fluid charging pipe, with the A/T fluid level gauge reversed from the normal attachment conditions. f. Remove A/T fluid level gauge and note reading. If reading is at low side of range, add ATF to the A/T fluid charging pipe. CAUTION: Do not overfill.
Professor, tell me, are you just refreshing the oil, putting a new one down, right? You are not flushing all the transmission oil,...because I heard that a machine is used and you are not using a machine .
Correct. This is a transmission fluid “change”, not a “flush” which I’ve read is not recommended. I’m about to do this procedure again next weekend on my g35s. It’s been over 30k miles since I did it last.
5 speed jatco 5at was developed with thicker atf, matic J. Since matic S is thinner than matic J, wouldn’t you expect transmission slip when you use matic S ?
From what I understand Matic J was discontinued by Nissan. Go to the dealer with your vin number and ask what fluid is correct, they will recommend Matic S.
@@DIYGarageNation did you notice any difference in your 5AT after switching to thinner matic S fluid? (Does it shift smoother and better than matic J?..)

Oh okay thanks I initially got castrol transmax,atf/cvt universal but didn't make a good research before getting it...guess I'll just have to go for the either Nissan matic j or valvoline

About 110k miles we’re on the vehicle. However I previously had my mechanic do a transmission fluid change at about 70k miles. I wouldn’t mind doing the fluid change every 24k miles since it’s so easy and relatively inexpensive.
I believe there are some differences, the bolt may be Allen wrench/hex key style. Also, the refill may be different. I would check the engine bay before starting to make sure there is a dipstick in a similar location to the one shown in this video.
Different transmission so I’m not 100 percent sure but I would check 1) dipstick is there for refill and 2) under the car find the drain bolt. Should be straight forward after that. Measure and refill.
Not sure about that. Should not be very different. 1. Find refill hole, if it’s on top of the engine like in this video then should be a similar process. 2. Removed splash shield under car and Find transmission pan bolt. Rest should be similar.
Unless you have records there’s no way to know. Check the transmission dipstick as shown in the video, if the oil is dark I would consider changing the transmission oil as shown.

Did you warm up atf before opening the drain bolt?

Drain when cold, it’s safer plus the ATF is at the same temperature when filling back up.

My car is G37 2009 model and Idid’t find any dipstick for gearbox oil
It may not have one, some vehicles don’t.
In that case it is important to measure the amount of liquid that you take out, make sure you replace the exact amount.
