- What happens if you powder coat over galvanizing? We have turned the turning point and now we are just making things better by making our Range Rover last even longer! Or will it? Will the powder coating actually stick to the fresh layer of hot-dipped zinc or is this embellishment just a veneer of vanity?! Let's see what happens...

Many thanks! More in the pipeline…
Great To hear about the powder-coating process, reversible, sags and runs, the Faraday effect etc, but I still think John got bamboozled out of his Green 906
I love that Edd is able to ask these highly skilled technicians to explain their craft in an understandable way.
That in itself takes a lot of technical understanding, to be able to guide a conversation in such a way that they enthusiastically talk about their profession - kudos Edd...
I know how cars work, how they're built and mostly everything conceptually... but I'm still amazed at how it all starts with a barren apparently simple chassis frame. Thank you Edd for all the explanations and shows of the inner workings... beyond entertainment, you've taught so much to so many...
My brain just cannot get past the thought that all that sanding, fileing and acid washing is undermining the whole purpose and weather seal of the galvanization
Sometimes overkill is too much. I don't think it's going to extend the life as well as a double dip of zink.
Feels like order of operations is wrong.. sand file first, then galv, then light sand to key and get edges off.. then powder. Just feels wrong filing the chassis lol
This frame is going to be good for 100 years
What’s the price difference between a new one
@@chrisphipps8169 You’d still have to galvanize and powder coat a new one if you want it to be similarly rust proof.
In Canada's 'Rust Belt' of the Atlantic provinces, it's not uncommon to have vehicles' underside/chassis sprayed with any of various brands of oily products. The concoctions are mostly an oil, but may have proprietary additives that help to prevent rust. Vehicles can last almost "forever" if they're sprayed annually.
In the UK, it was Waxoyl that was blown into and over chassis. Hammerite have a rattle can product that does the same.
do we have to understand vegetable and/or biodegradable not harmful oil or the fossil petroleum oil one?
@@InternetListener
E.g. (from a Safety Sheet) Solvent-dewaxed heavy paraffinic distillates (petroleum), Solvent-refined heavy paraffinic distillates (petroleum), Mineral oils (petroleum), Calcium petroleum sulfonate, Mineral spirits, ...
After spraying, it drips on the ground for a week or so.
In Germany, they mostly use Mike Sanders which is a vaseline/wax combo (similar to PX11 from the armed forces). It has to be sprayed into crevices while liquified with a heated gun and nozzle, and it makes a mess of every place where you spray stat stuff (it will coat everything), but as far as rust protection goes, it is great. Will keep on creeping even upwards for years in warm weather, and your car will leave vaseline stains on the ground for years if coated correctly - but moisture won't have any chance to touch the metal, and without moisture there's no (further) rust.
I’m unimpressed with Waxoyl. It goes on nicely but dries up and peels off. Subsequent coats simply fall off when the original layer gives up.
I’m due to try Lanoguard, which sounds like a thinner layer of lanolin grease.
That said, chain saw bar oil thinned with white spirit does a great job.
Good to see progress on the Land Drover!
When you powder coat over anything and it gets chipped water gets behind it and rust proceeds undetected. Better to put multi layers of galvanized.
Edd if you are making so much effort on the chassis I can imagine what he body and interior will look like 😊😊
Do we have to? No, we really do have too! Lots more episodes to come then!…
@@eddchina waiting a long while for this, thanks Edd
I expect orange seats. :-)
Orange.
Tome chassis is unfinished until some other custom orange layer of PU liner is sprayed on there (you know the type of liner that had lines and x on its name). and over that if possible a deep bath on molten hot wax so to seal forever the chassis against external weather, gravel...
Edd, it is good to see some new content. I'm also enjoying the banter between you and John. The two of you just bounce off each other. I'm looking forward to seeing more Range Rover content.
This channel is like an old friend that rocks up every so once in a while and its like good ole times again hahaha defying the algorithm!
Nice to see sticking to the one project...be nice to see weekly videos to keep people interested.
This company did my original defender 50th chassis after my repairs- galv and powder coat- came out brilliant!
"clean grease" and then touch it with bare hands. lol.
Yep, put his hands on pretty-much every surface of the thing, hope his hands were clean.
I’m sure they were very clean hands!!
@@eddchinaHands are never clean. Touch bare metal with your “clean” hands and see where it starts to rust. And paint won’t stick to those places.
yeaaah, finally I'm not the only one who says "never touch bare metal with bare hands"...
@@eddchina I'm aware that it is just powder coating on a galvanized chassis and it won't change it's fate. ^^
Our skin is always, more or less greasy/oily" (don't know which english word is the more appropriate ^^ ) and if we are not fully focused one can easily touch a part prepped for paint or treatment with bare hands and more or less ruin it.
Keep up the good work !
Yaay!! That was my suggestion ,i said can you paint it fluorescent orange or purple and you said "On it " Im so glad you chose the orange itl add some brightness underneath that dark under side ,maybe you can add some more orange trim bits or something to the rest of the car

Torch? Oh - flashlight. I was thinking blow torch.
1.1M views and I fully fully agree.
Why has a company allowed to be shown to the world using a sodding phone torch and no masks.
I hope this doesent harm them because they allowed Edd to walk round in no or very little PPE.
I know the worlds gone mad on H&S but it's written in blood.
Also we must note, the company may provide all of the above, it's the staffs job to use and apply their PPE. (so check the edit before showing the world).
No mask, that powder can not be good to breathe
@@HansDelbruck53 UK English it's a torch... it doesn't flash.
Great to see you back Edd , and that zinc job looks fantastic , not jealous now , nope not jealous , not bloody half , well done guys .
Well I was taught to let the galvanising act by itself. It has been said that a small chip in the paint will expose the galvanising and all potential will be concentrated on that area and it will rust into a hole rather than the whole chassis acting as a sacrificial anode. Galvanised buckets will not leak until all of the galvanising has disappeared. 😮
Little scary but an interesting experiment. I’m sure John will be putting plenty of chips in the paint soon enough!
Wouldn't every part of zinc that was electrically connected to the exposed zinc continue to provide galvanic protection?
Great to see the process from start to finish. Keep the videos coming Edd. 👍
the cover plate of my Ford SUV was powder coated, it rusted thru and leaked, the Ford replacement part was made in Mexico and painted, the engine pan was also powder coated, when that started to leak I traded the car in. They use powder coat in the US because they're not allowed to use real paint, it's BADD for the environment but rusty cars are just fine. What happens with PC is some rock you kick up will make a small hole in it and let the water in where it creeps in between the metal and the powder film that continues to look just fine until it finally fails, by that time the entire part is rusted through. The real protection in your example is the zinc. My MB car is 25 years old, no rust, it has zinc dipped sheet metal on the bottom that is coated with MBs proper paint process and then sprayed with a coating of soft wax. I live in PA not CA so rustly cars are common. The outside paint on the car is original and very good, quality shows but the newer ones aren't built that way, that sucks.
Couldn't agree more. Powder coating a chassis is a dodgy option
Maybe the pick up bed paint would be soft enough for hard core off-roading. We all know John is going to want a different colour anyway!
Yeah, everything I've had powdercoated that's in harms way has a shelf life. I think it's really best where it doesn't get active abrasion like railings and the like. I have some powder coat hammer finish valve covers on my 84 Jetta that still look stunning
The owner wanted a Green chassis, but Ed wanted it Orange....I don't know who's paying for it, either way, why not give the owner what he wanted? Sounds like a bit of an ego trip to me...
That's been my experience of powder coating as well, it cracks and flakes and hides rust behind it, ask any TVR owner!
I was powder coater and wet sprayer for 30 years looks good job
Thanks, it does look good, now we need to avoid the chipping it all off!
Not sure what Edd is up to.
Feels like he left us hanging again.
Most excellent to see the regular updates once more my good man.
Sanding the rough high points off, will remove the galvanising from that spot. That will be the first place to start rotting.
The zinc was very thick in places but I am worried about that too…
Jeez Ed you are hard work, let the men speak.
Good to see you're back, Edd! Congrats on reaching 1M subs, by the way
You really need to get some sponsors to help you with this build, or perhaps a customer who will pay for this and you sell it, been following this for a while and months later you're still on the chassis?
The guy spraying and the old man breathing in the power, genius...
Drying in a nice warm oven whilst your waffling on with the bloody door open letting the heat out. Nice😂😂😂
Great having you back and loves the orange subframe!
Great video. I do some powder coating at work occasionally for personal stuff and i find it highly satisfying although I wouldn't recommend for a chassis or any components which are going to be subject to rocks etc as once it chips that's it and you cant really do much about it. I'd have gone for red oxide and probably raptor or something personally for future maintenance and top up. Love seeing you back China! All the best.
Looks amazing! Can't be many orange range rover chassis around.
I am wondering on how many places they broke the galvanize seal by sanding and even grate the surface. Next to that, I’ve seen so many galvanized objects down the street, balconies, garage doors, traffic posts, with peeling layers of powder coating that I’ve lost my connivence a bit. It’s that sacrificing zink that rejects anything on top of it after a few years and sometime even (les worrying) decades.
I agree. I've seen the same. The main protagonists of powder coating seem to be the companies that do it😂
Powder coating is porous. It is the WORST coating for metal protection.
I found this out when living near the coast and the salt got through the coating to rust the metal.
Proper paint is the best.
Edd appeared on BOM and saw you can (not) do a full restoration in over 8 years so he's taking over 1 just to do the chassis of RR. Way to go...
Both are faster than some Freddy named youtuber capable of starting 800 projects but not finishing one of them in any give period of years...
I think BOM are in the lead at the moment but they’ll soon get distracted again!
@@InternetListener Can't stand the comrade. Last he was any good was with the Murci.
As more different layers protect the frame as better it is. I advice after galvanizing and powder coating a layer of fat or wax under the whole car.
Don't forget the frame inside, otherwise it can rust from inside to outside.
Hey, I thought all UK cars and car parts has the same color: British Racing Green. 😂😂😂
You probably want so sell afterwards?
Regards from Belgium
Galvanising needs to weather to passivate the zinc before coating with anything. If coated too soon moisture will leach through the molecules of the powder coat over time and the zinc will blow the coating off as it oxidises. Much better to leave outside for six months then coat with tar epoxy
Can’t believe you’re suggesting we delay things by another six months!!
@@eddchina Ich habe mal gehört, dass man das verwittern auch mit Seifenlauge abkürzen kann. Ich hatte leider beim verzinkten Gartentor das Problem, dass TROTZ Verwitterungszeit der Lack nicht halten wollte. Also die 1.
there's an episode of "Loudemilk" where he tells his friend he laughs at everything like a tick, and points out his chuckle everytime he answers the phone and even on his voicemail message. I enjoy being light hearted but you don't have to be your own laugh track. I do enjoy all the information, and how this frame must now be worth 3 good used Range Rovers
Always great to watch experts at work
Ford Rangers with 4 doors powder coated the rear brackets supporting the bed in 1998. The coating released at the corners allowing water to get trapped rusting out the bracket. After market brackets are available and only painted like the fronts which had no problems. Not sure if other years models were involved. My states use brine in winter.
Always great knowledge passed on from a great teacher. Been a fan since your Wheeler Dealer days! Did notice the guy using his bare hands after using the degreasing wash on your chassis. They should invest in Nitrile gloves to handle all the clean product.
Ooh, Orange and White- good old Rocky top, Rocky top, Tennessee!
Go Vols!
Nice little twist there - preview with a nice green spray and finished product is hi-vis orange. Springs going to be that sparkly black? I did my Spitfire springs in a powder coating color called "black chrome".
That sounds cool.😎
You really done that rust bucket justice, great job 👍
Good to see you back on RUclips Edd. Long may it continue.
Looking forward to seeing more progress on your RRC
Never powder coat. Moisture will get behind coating and rust. Additionally bolt holes and threads will be a challenge.
Fun video. I enjoyed it, and I love the orange frame. 🙂
A suggestion if I might. Either do an interview or a documentary. Try to avoid asking an expert something, and then immediately answering it yourself, as he answers. My impression upon initial viewing is that you verbally stepped on Kevin multiple times in the shop. That may or may not be accurate, but it was my impression during initial viewing.
I realize that you are enthused about this project, and I have always enjoyed listening to you explain things, but try to avoid mixing your styles of presentation. 😉
"I'm just watching dry paint." LOL! 😆
I'm pretty sure that powder coating is less "painting" than "plastic coating".
Stop admiring the boxes of other power coating colors. You've chosen orange, my Netherlander friend. 😋
That is THE best protected Land Rover chassis in the world. Aside from the powder coating (which I love), if Land Rover had galvanized their chassis, they wouldn't have developed the reputation of being rust-buckets.
Cool colour. Powder paint spraying was my first job when i left school.
Love the colour..
Thanks
I'd say the biggest advantage of the orange is being able to see all the little bits of mud and gunk under the car so you know if you've washed it clean enough. Otherwise the green is a much less offensive color, but I don't know how visible the chassis is from the topside when the rest of the car is on it.
That is true, thankfully John will be the one washing it once we’re finished!
Really love the orange colour it had to be 👌 very interested to see the rest of the car rebuilt
Powder coating was definitely the way to go. Interested in what the costs associated with both processes might be.
Had a metal letter box post hot dipped, and found the folks who did it genuinely interested in getting it right - figure it was something out of the ordinary for them. Was able to watch the process up close - basically dropping it into molten zinc in vat dug into the floor, amazed just how dangerous a misstep could be working with this stuff.
It’s been great to watch these processes up close! Hope your letterbox is still in fine fettle!
Browsed the American Galvanizer Association site and found some answers. A 3 mil coating can add up to 15% additional weight to an object (which seems high to me) and despite its higher initial cost, is certainly cheaper over the long haul than traditional painting. My letter box post will cost less than $20 to maintain over 100 years (in 2024 dollars) and over $150 if it got regular repainting.
Overkill, probably. But living in a Rust Belt climate, the vehicles I treasure most never see road salt. A small guilty pleasure, but a rust free chassis is a joy to behold.
Just started powder coating a few things, lots of fun 👍
Powder coating looks beautiful on certain non-structural components, but I'm not sure it's the best thing for something like a chassis, especially if it can flex.
My worry would be that a tiny break in the coating would let water in and hold it there. It's a little bit like wrapping the steel in polythene. A few (salty) winters of freezing and thawing could lift the coating, letting in more water and making things worse than if the galvanising had been left bare.
I'd have flooded the galvanised chassis inside and out with Waxoyl. That doesn't form a hard shell; it lasts indefinitely, it can flex and creep and even self-heal minor abrasions.
Just my opinion, of course...😁
yep, powder coating can hide and help some really nasty corrosion once it fractures and lets water in, flexible, transparent waxoyl or similar would be a much better bet.
Opportunity to change the colour though!!
You couldn’t have chosen a better paint colour than that beautiful orange 🍊👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🙋♂️🙈
Thank you, it won’t be so easy to lose in the workshop now!
Edd was the heart and soul of Wheeler Dealers and it was never the same without him. It is wonderful to be able to see him back in action in the shop where he belongs. Cannot wait to see this Range Rover finished. Edd was just being modest by not picking that frame up by himself and letting the other fellas lend a hand.
Disagree. Ant was so preachy and effeminate in his descriptions. Mark “Elvis Priestly is as talented as Edd if not more multi dimensional in areas Edd had zero skills.
get over it , Ed quit , life moves on
Powder coat just makes it look good. Poor protection. Think wrap in cling wrap. Water and oxygen get under and track throughout eventually. It’s the galv doing real protection.
Great work very well done, just ignore the critics.
Big fan of orange, certainly a statement! Not such an enthusiast of powder coat in weather or impact prone applications though.
Powdercoat has a nasty habit of debonding, cracking and then trapping moisture behind it, a nightmare on bare steel.
Add to this, stone chip impacts and it just seems like a recipe for trouble, especially with road salt. I guess if its just a show car, then its not a big issue, otherwise i fear it might cause more problems than it solves.
I'm a proponent of wet spray all the way...
"What a splendid Kubota chassis" ! Petit clin d'oeil du Québec. ;-)

The 2 year process of re-assembly can f8nally begin 😂😂 at least the chassis is looking smart and is now a solid foundation to rebuild the Range Rover.

That fella is going to have bright orange lungs!
2:32 John has a to make a little decision on what .... shade of orange to go for?
Is it an Epoxy or a Polyester powder coating? Epoxy is tougher and more expensive but is also available in orange.👍
Apparently the Ineos Grenadier can be ordered with a red/orange chassis for a small premium which goes to a charity.
A "colour clash" with chassis and suspension, now I've heard it all!😂👍

Warming up the sockets as we speak…
I have to ask with the amount of money/time/effort etc would it not have been easier to get a chassis fabricated from scratch, made from something like stainless steel, aluminium or corrosive resistant alloy. Given the userbase for land rover there has to be somewhere doing something along those lines surely?
You’re bound to be correct. Stainless would be interesting…
john: can we get this range rover finished alread? edd: only if i can paint everything orange.
It will always rust again, first the contact points, where things are screwed on.
What about inside the box sections? Any plans on how you intend protecting those hidden places from rust long term?
This is getting exciting ed. I’m sad I make noises when I see you’ve put a new video on. Mrs stares at me lol. Roll on the build. Woohoo

Never much cared for the colour orange. But over the last few years it's really grown on me, and Edd is entirely to blame! 😄
fascinating, what a great colour. great content.
What happens when it chips? The zinc will start ocidizing, will that zinc oxidation spread under the powder coat and make it all flake off?
Interesting question @brianjones526 above suggests it might make the corrosion concentrate so it could be much worse!! Only one way to find out…
@@eddchina i recall the late 80s early 90s oldsmobiles had an adherence problem with their hood paid. It would come off in sheets, and my recollection is that the layer of primer was oxidizing and de-laminating the top coat of paint right off the car.
Wichtig wäre der Schutz INNEN, also Hohlräume etc.
