This is great, Ive been on and off with the sax for years and always get frustrated.and put it down. Im not a book learner, Im a visual learner. Your accompanying graphics with a simple slow paced video is EXCELLENT> Take it form a guy who produces training videos! Thanks for this . Russ
Thanks 😊 New to sax, I can literally learn any song I want if I come to this vid and pick out the notes I need just by listening to the examples provided. Time consuming, but well worth it.
My good sir, there is not enough words in the English language to describe how much this video has helped me! I showed your video to my saxophone teacher and he very much appreciated it. He’s even shared it with some of his other students! (He just wishes there was a video of the chromatic scale for tenor.)
Perfect thank you! Been playing for about a month now, working through blues bossa. It was pretty inconvenient flipping through my book to find the fingerings to each new note they were teaching me. Thanks again!
thank you so much, thanks to you i was able to play some cool pieces, this is probably the best video for fingering charts and notes. you just earnt another subscriber :D
Thank you very much for teaching me the alternative fingerings. I wasn't sure what all the keys were supposed to do and it was too hard on the ears to find out by trial and error. This has spared me the trouble with the neighbors, given me a peace of mind and new and convenient options for playing. Thank you once more. I've liked and subscribed. :-)
Fantastically helpful. I was only ever taught the third fingering for Bb. I kept hearing other videos talking about side key or bis key fingerings and had no idea what they were talking about. This is an incredibly helpful reference to practice along with to learn alternate fingerings. Thanks so much!
Fantastic video. I have a question: I have been self-teaching saxophone for about two weeks now using nothing but RUclips and just messing around by myself. I am really getting the hang of it now and this video is perfect to help me understand the way the saxophone works. My question is are there any situations in which any of the alternative fingerings shown in this video are preferable? Or is it simply a matter of choosing the most comfortable fingering for you, or choosing the fingering which is easiest to change to after the previous note? Thanks :)
Finally I understand, I have tried searching for everything, but this, this is on point. There’s one thing though, when I press the highest key with my left hand for F# it makes a bad sound almost as if something is wrong but I can’t figure it out. Has this happened to anyone too?
Pleased to see the enharmonic naming of the notes , as used in notated music for reading saxophone parts in bands/ orchestras ,. There can be a tendency to play the higher notes too sharp , sometimes because of tightening the embouchure unnecessarily and not correcting the pitch by hearing the pitch in one’s head and using steady diaphragm breath control.
You're welcome! All of these fingerings also apply to tenor sax, they will just sound in a different key. I hope to get a video like this completed for tenor sax soon.
@@DrSelfridgeMusic any word on this for tenor sax? Would love one for clarinet and flute if you could ever swing it; I'm using this as a resource for my students and I'd love to point other band directors toward this too. Thoughts? Thank you sir!
I enjoy your methodical videos. You explain things very well. The charts you put up are crucial. My concern: fingering alterations between the B-flat clarinet and the alto sax gets confusing. Any words of wisdom to go from one to the other, outside of lots of practice? Dr. Bill
I don’t understand. There’s a b key which is just the very top one that your left index finger goes on then there is a b fingering. Can someone explain this to me please?
Thanks for the video 👍 I have a problem. I am beginner to saxophone and my notes sounds too high, even when playing the low notes. Does anyone know why?
I was a clarinet player and was put on the alto sax during hs and it was pretty easy for me since they are both woodwind instruments and the notes are not too different.
I am just hearing the notes, but I don't see the fingers being applied to make those notes. That was hard for me to figure out. I will try again later.
You're right! Since Alto Sax is a transposing instrument, when you play a B-flat on alto sax, it is actually a D-flat on the piano (otherwise known as C-sharp)

I have a question. When you show the fingering for 2 notes, like E flat and Dsharp you play those notes with the same fingering. Right?
@@sharkfriendlyanimations6081 yes. They are enharmonic equivalents.

Dr. Selfridge Music . Question when it’s like D flat/ C-sharp what does that mean? are they the same note
Your a life saver I just learned all the normal notes and I really needed to learn these one thank you so much!
Bro what do you mean the normal notes 😭 I’m a guitar player that just bought a sax
@@eznack1489 me too, the saxophone is a transposing instrument, so everything plays a minor 3rd up or 4 half steps (also an octave lower than written)
Thanks 😊

This is EXACTLY what I needed! Hand reference, diagram and how the notes look in sheet music! Perfect for a music noob like me. Thank you!
Thank you for this good video. To show the alternative Altissimo fingering along with the "conventional" ones is most helpful.
this video saved me! i had to learn the chromatic scale in an hour after not playing it in months 😅 this helped me (and my grade) so much 😂😂😂

Thank you! I am starting band and I will do this as a warm up every time before I practice the songs!
I primarily play clarinet and have been for five years. I just got an alto for Christmas. This will help a LOT. Thanks!
Finally a video showing me how to get to that top F# without the F# key. Now how to work out the best key choices to get there smoothly...
you are a life saver man.. just what i needed.. so so so so much helpful.. thank you mso much
That all I need. Thank you so much. I was searching all around for a video like this here it is.
Thanks for the video, always good to be reminded of some of the alternate fingerings I would usually forget about.
This was so helpful, thank you so much!! I'm having some trouble hitting the really low notes though, any tips?
I noticed it's usually a bit easier to get the low notes when you relieve some pressure off the reed, or move the pressure further toward the neck
I have a band test today and I forgot a couple notes and you saved the day for me
Thanks so much you made my night by helping me figure whatvnote I was playing

It depends on the notes in the measures that use a fingering that is hard to get to using normal fingerings

You maybe pressing to hard on the mouthpiece , try relaxing your embouchure.
Is it ok that I can't quite get the first low b-flat to come out?
I have the same problem. I just experimented to see how to set my embouchure. I had to tighten up the sides of mine.
