An update on my fig collection. My fig orchard is shaping up and soon I will be able to publish detailed videos on the best fig varieties I have. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to help the channel grow. Share the video and leave a comment. I will try to answer as many questions as I can. Thanks for watching.
Can’t wait for the updated version of the rooting method!! Your current method gave me 100% rooting success but I struggled a bit with the transplanting …from what you show here that might change now!! Love your video material …so systematic and clear…thank you very much for your courses 🙏🏻
That's wonderful! Easing the transplant phase was one of my goals when refining my method, along with ensuring a more uniform level of humidity for the development of the young roots. The video should be ready by the end of the month.
Unfortunately most fig varieties need a longer summer to develop fully. Probably, about a third of the varieties I am growing won't show it's true potential in my area (zone 9a near the ocean - too much humidity).
Great video! With so many fig trees alone in addition to your expansive pome and stone fruit orchard, do you sell a portion of your fruit at the market? To have access to such a great variety of fruit must be very pleasant across the seasons. Cheers
I keep my trees quite small so fruit production is not overwhelming (the heavy clay on my apple orchard stuns the growth, even with vigorous rootstocks). For now family, friends, cider, jams, preserves, etc, use up all production.
With the limited space for so many varieties I place them 2,5 meters apart. Not ideal, but if you keep the size controlled with pruning, is enough for the tree to develop enough to show it's true potential, regarding fig quality.
Olá. Lamento. Por enquanto ainda não. Ainda estou na fase de avaliar quais são as melhores variedades. Muitas das que têm maior potencial ainda nem sequer produziram, pelo que não tenho informação suficiente sobre as suas características.
i have 4 different varieties of fig trees that are all parthenocarpic (three of them from a nursery and one a cutting from a tree). but my problem is, they dont produce fruits. is it possible because i have to cover them from november to late april cause of freezing temperatures that can occure in that time in germany? is it than too late for them to produce fruits?
Since they are covered for most of the growing season there may not be enough time for figs to develop. Try pinching the tips, so vegetative growth is stopped. That tends to speed up fig development. You can check my video on the subject here - ruclips.net/video/iutB8se2rgo/видео.html
I tapped the thumbs up button to feed the algorithm monsters.... Question: Why didn't you plant the trees with a small mound instead of slightly below the level clay. Won't the clay hold water and rot the root? Thank you.
The type of soil in my fig orchard is a bit more tricky than that (in most areas there's a sandy layer below the clay). I have more problems with young trees dying out in the summer than I do with waterlogged roots in the winter, so I decided against planting them in a mound.
It’s going to partially depend on your climate and what performs best there. Availability is also something to consider. Are you purchasing locally or online? Local selection may be limited but they also usually carry the most reliable varieties for that given climate.
Matty is right. Growing the best fig varieties or any fruit variety for that matter is really determined by the zone you are in. A wonderful fig variety that matures in early September in zone 10 will never produce nothing worthwhile in zone 7/8 since it won't have enough heat to mature fully.
Sorry, not for the time being. I'm still evaluating, so I don't have enough information on more than half of my fig varieties (many have not produced yet).
Really looking forward to the new fig videos. Planted my first fig trees 1 year ago. I'm ready for more information! Especially details about pollination needs
At the beginning of your video you talked about losing trees in the winter is this because of rain if it is, you should not be putting that potting soil in that part of that hole before you plant that tree and that soil is going to fill up with water and not drain that’s the reason your tree is drowning
What I mentioned is a problem on my apple orchard. On the area I planted the figs it's slightly different, as the layer of clay is thinner and the soil is sandy below it. In that area I have more problems with trees drying out in the summer and no problems in the winter. That's why I don't remove the potting soil when planting my fig trees. Thanks for the comment and the advice.
I tend to avoid using fungicides in my fig trees. Rust fungus is usually not a big problem over here and most fig trees can outgrow it, if they are developing well. If a tree is heavily affected, I control the fungus spores during the dormant season with a mix of lime and copper sulfate ("bordeaux mixture" or "calda bordalesa" as it's know over here, a mix that's been used for centuries to control fungal fruit trees diseases in the dormant season).
Yes. I'm in Portugal. I have a few favorite varieties (most national varieties are very good), but my potentially best fig varieties are still very young, so my favorites might change in a couple of years. Next summer I might do a couple of videos describing a few varieties.

That is a lot of varieties! I'm looking forward to seeing the difference between them. I won't be able to grow many if them in northern UK, though.

THANK YOU !
I will be planting in 0.5-1 meter of clay before brown soil. I will use a slight mount with my Celest.....

Здравствуйте, какая климатическая зона у вас, где выращиваете
Зона 9а в Португалии.
@JSacadura я в России в Нальчике, Кавказ. Где-то 6+, 7 зона.
