I’ve been racing Enduro at the expert level competitively for a decade, mixing drivetrain components mostly SRAM 12-speed with RaceFace cranks and chainrings, never a problem (except for Next SL crank-arms breaking!) Now that Shimano finally broke into the 12-speed market (at a much more affordable price,) I started racing Shimano XTR on one bike, and SRAM XO-1 on the other, both with RaceFace Cranks & chainrings. About a year ago (after Fox acquired RaceFace,) RaceFace had deep discounts on their chainrings. I bought enough to last a few years of riding and racing. This last bunch has been giving me constant issues. I just got home from a CA Enduro Series race at Northstar (8/20/23,) and I had to remove a brand new XT chain and run a SRAM chain on a brand new RaceFace chainring, but it still didn’t work well in the biggest gears while trying to hammer down the high-speed sections. I think RaceFace dumped a bunch of chainrings because they knew they had compatibility issues.
I migrated last year to 1x12, and it is a total game changer. I wanted to go full Shimano, but I also wanted to keep it in a budget, so I chose to keep my cranks (which are not hollowtech style) and went for a SunRace CRMX00 chainring which I think woks great. But now that you mentioned it, I think indeed it is not fully compatible with the chain, and the wide tooths are wider than Shimano ones, so there is some friction and noise over there, but nothing huge. When they will tear up (either the chain or the chainring), I will switch to Shimano Cranks and chainring as well, but until then I am happy with the way it works. Thank you for the explanation and the detailed video!
Well, to each his own. I have 2x11 XT (m8000) on my XC and 1x12 SLX (m7100) on my enduro bike. I'm new to 1x system, have it for 3 months only. I took my enduro uphill (1km vertical climb). I must say I'm not happy to see the chain crossed so much when I use the 51T. It's said chain is built for this but personally I feel it's just not right. It's an enduro bike, I expect this bike to be ridden mostly in bike parks. On the other hand I can't be more happy with the 2x system on my XC. It provides better gear ratio (both on the low and high ends). Probably the only downside of this setup is that I can't use dropper post lever as there's no room in the cockpit for it. I have to use one that is next to the brake/shift levers.
@@matoatlantis I had 2x9 on my bike, but I was always having issues with dropping chain. And after some thought about it, I changed it to 1x12 SLX (with Deore derailleur) and I am totally happy with it. The gear range is just what I need, and I don't miss the gears that I had on 2x9. The lowest gear is lower than what I had, and the highest gear is higher than what I had, and I don't really use all the middle ones. Basically a 9-10 speed sprocket with ratio 10/11-50/51 teeth like Box ones would have been best for my needs, but they are not available in my country. So Shimano or Sram with their 12s 10-51/11-50 where the only choices I had in this regard.
Thanks for this video. It is great to find such content on your channel. I run an oval 32 tooth OneUp chainring with my Shimano SLX 12speed drivetrain and chain together with a Sunrace MZ903 cassette. That is needed because I use the old Shomano hub. But the combination works very smooth.
I recently change the 11 speed to a Sra-Mano 12 speed system (based on your experiment). The system contains a SRAM GX axs, XT M8100 Cassette + Dt Swiss micro spline freehub, Shimano Deore XT Chain CN-M8100, and an old FC-M9000-1 crankset, these all works fine with the Shimano CR M90 34T chainring (not narrow-wide) + chainguide.
your channel is dynamite. i bought a new bike with deore 10 speed in the back and just a cheap rocky mountain crank and ring in the front with a square threaded bb. i want to get a better shimano bb and new crank and oval chainring. what do u suggest? im new to mtb so help is appreciated. thanks
On my old 11s Sram group I was using a hg Shimano chain and it worked fine. On my new Sram eagle I am using a eagle chain with a Garbaruk oval 34t and it works absolutely great 👍
That's the first time I have seen a decent explanation why Shimano HG+ chains are not compatible with other brands. And your explanation was great, like the entire video! I was kind of forced to go back to NX 1x11 and have GRX 11s on my Gravel bike. Previously I used a conplete Eagle GX drivetrain and later upgraded to an X01 chain.
Thank you for this! I am building a "parts bin" hard-tail using only parts I've taken off other bikes as they get upgraded. At this point I have 12spd SLX cranks with Shimano 30t chain ring.I also have a 12spd SRAM GX derailleur, 10-52 cassette and matching XD free-hub wheelset . I plan on running this set up and I have both GX and XT chains to choose. Based on your videos I think the GX is the chain I'll pick. Thank you again!
@@LoveMTB and even more than that, I built it with your 4-part “How to build a bike” series. I always had a pretty good idea of how to do most of it. Headsets, forks, bottom brackets etc. But hydraulic brakes and derailleur adjustment were always the biggest barriers and things I would take and pay someone to do them. Your videos are fantastic and I recommend them to anyone I can. Thank you again. 🙏
I'm running a 12 speed slx group set with Shimano cranks, shifter, derailleur, chain, absolute black chain ring and sun race 11-51t cassette. Runs well for me, I'm sure it'd shift a little smoother with a Shimano cassette, but this allows me to keep using my hg hub body wheel set.
My bike came with a Sunrace cassette (shortages I am guessing) on an HG hub. Other than that is all Shimano 12 speed. Found out it was HG after I attempted to swap it to an XT cassette (microspline)....but I have new wheels now so there is that. 😑💰
@@LoveMTB Got some Stan'sFlow MK4 with oil slick Bitex hubs in a sale. 108 poi. Swapped the grease for oil. Good so far. Can't say that the XT cassette shifts any smoother than the Sunrace tbh. It was 200g lighter though
@@LoveMTB I have some 29er, 32 spoke raceface ARC 40mm offset set rims laced to dt Swiss 350 hubs with 54t ratchet, running 29x2.8 tires, as well as some stock bontrager wheels (45i) with studded 29x2.8's, and some stock orbea wheels (30i) with a decent hub an 29x2.4 tires. I'll swap between the 3 for different conditions on my orbea Occam h30 and Trek 1120.
this video is a lifesaver! 👏 I can confirm Sram chainring (34T X-Sync 2 eagle) works great with Shimano M6100 chain, shifter, M7100 cassette and hub. I used Sram eagle power lock and it shifts so smooth and so quiet that I still can't believe how well it worked out. Even the chainline turned out ok with the old Shimano Deore M590 crankset. I would highly recommend converting your bike to 1x12! it's not as hard and not as expensive as the 3x6 fanboys would make you believe 😋 PS 10-51T range blew my mind 🤩
Thanks for the video, I’m running an eagle chainring with Shimano 1x12 it seems to work perfectly, but I never thought I’m about it wearing out a bit faster.
@@LoveMTB just the standard Shimano one, but the Eagle chainring did have about 2-3000km on it before I converted the rear and chain to Shimano, so maybe it has worn down enough that it fits fine?
Love the detail you get into in all your videos! I learn something new every time. I'll be using the Race Face Cinch (direct mount) chainring specifically for Shimano 12 speed since I already have RF Turbine cranks. Any tips or issues with that set up? Looks like Shimano also went to direct mount with their M8100 cranks. No more 4-bolt, which makes sense. For chain, I'll be using the Shimano XT M8100. Looking forward to the new set up and finally having a big granny gear for climbing the steeps around here! It will be interesting to see how fast the chain/cassette/chainring wears. Hopefully not too fast as the price of these parts is up there vs 11 spd! Also, right now there's a shortage of XT 12 speed cassettes in the USA. The current estimated wait time is March 2023! Luckily I found a buddy who was willing to sell me his that he just bought and had planned to return. Hope Shimano gets their supply chain issues solved soon.
Using a Absolute black oval "sram" boost chainring with GX dub cranks, GX cassette and GX chain but also am using Shimano XT rear derailleur with XT shifter in the drive train. Shmeagle GXT I guess? It works great for me and I sourced parts on second hand market via take offs. Saved a lot of money this way and mostly thanks to your channel I was able to do all of my own work at home! You rock!! You need a patreon or something.
Thanks for the deep dive. It's helped to verify the noise I'm hearing on my Canyon Neuron. It uses a Deore Hyperglide + 12s chain but makes a terrible sound while backpedaling especially. I'm working with an FSA Comet Crankset that are listed in multiple places as being Shimano 12 compatible, or Shimano 11/12 compatible. The Megatooth chainring on it says SH12 so and I can't find anything that specifically states its for Hyperglide + 12s. The problem seems to be the chamfered inner plates, which hang up on the edge of the chainring teeth for fleeting moment just before it seats fully into the trough of the chainring teeth. It would be easy to simply solve the noise issue by replacing the chain with a SRAM but then I would lose the simultaneous two-cog engagement that the Hyperglide + provides. I'm thinking Canyon actually may owe me a new ring that is actually compatible with this chain. Anyone else having an issue with the Shimano Hypeglide + making noise while backpedaling?
Interesting find. Assume Canyon went withe FSA's claim that they are HG+ compatible, how much riding have you had on the drivetrain? It settles down a bit after 100km or so.
@@LoveMTB I wouldn't doubt the sound could go away eventually, but it's going to take a lot longer than 100km for that to happen. Made a little video on it here. Today Canyon offered a $150 credit to purchase a Shimano crankset instead, which, to me, seems like an admission that there is no solution with the FSA. This is the video I sent to them: ruclips.net/video/duVb5NBH2kQ/видео.html
@@LoveMTB And from FSA: "According to our policy, I'm not able to "warranty" an item that is functional due to the way it sounds when being used in a way that is not related to its function [pedaling backwards]. I can offer a 30% replacement discount. I recommend using the $150 credit that you mentioned Canyon gave you for this concern along with the 30% discount I am offering, and try out the 11 speed ring."
My wife's bikes use Absolute Black chainrings and 12 speed Shimano chains, XT derailleurs, and Sunrace cassettes. One bike is 12 speed and the other is 11. They both work great with the 12 speed chain. I use her old chains, slightly worn, on my 1x11 and I get some noise from the 11 speed chainring. It works and the noise is only there on hard climbs. It annoys me. I want a new chain ring now. The 12 speed chain works fine in the 11 speed Sunrace cassette amd Sram derailleur i have. Or i could try a SRAM chain. But since I'm rotating through Shimano chains the chainring seems like a good alternative. Or maybe go back to 11 speed chains. I noticed the shifting actually seemed better with the 12 speed chain on the 11 speed cassette. Well it works good enough for what I do - long rides with lots of climbing. If i raced, i couldn't tolerate it.
Great. Thanks for the chain internal spacing shots !! Wow. Very interesting; I guess I'm good. Especially after installing an AXS only Eagle cassette which seems to jump all over the place?? My Trance X2 Mullet setup --- SLX 7100 crankset with 30T driving my new Rear 12x148 boost XD Hydra + X01 B1 10-52T cassette and GX 520% RD = super smooth (no difference in X01 rd; 1/2 price) ---- even with my KMC X12 silver chain and SLX shifter (X01 so stiff/too large?) Waiting on new copper E*Thirteen Helix R (12S 9-59T 2 piece ) cassette to test out --- We'll see - Paid $280 instead of X01 $433! Ouch. Concerned the also ordered to test XX1 copper chain works well with my SLX chainring???? The KMC X12 is still solid and smooth. So Fun.
Garbaruk is worth a mention here. Their chain ring works amazing with both SRAM & Shimano 12s, many different crank and bcd options. Long lasting & quiet , total win.
Great video as always! Using Brazilian Nottable chainring (great quality) on Shimano 12s system, but have to replace the quick link for an Eagle (too tight for the tooth profile of chainring, that is more like Sram compatible). On my gravel bike, 38T or 40T chinese generic (but great quality chainrings) with KMC 12s chain. Never had a chain drop, since using 11s chains or 12s, no matter how many parts I mixed.
Hello you might have an idea. I'm using the FSA Grid cranks but my problem is with the chain ring. I really dont have an idea what is the type of direct chainring it is. Like the inside teeth of the chainring. Is it cinch type?? im using the FSA Grid with the FSA modular system. Thank you for your help if you ever see this message.
Hi, this video kinda opened my eyes, but just to be sure - currently there's a complete Shimano XTR drivetrain on my bike and I want to get a spider based powermeter, which is avalible with either 8-100 bcd or 4-104 bcd mounting options for the chainring. The obvious choice would be to opt for the 8-100 bcd option, buy an XT chainring, dismount it from the original spider and use that, but some say this version of the powermeter is not that great and it's better to opt for 4-104 bcd. Then the obvious choice would be the Shimano HG+ chainring from Wolftooth, but that one with shipping to my place is crazy expensive. Now to my question related to your video. From what you said, it seems I could go with the 4-104 bcd version of the powermeter and get any cheap narrow-wide chainring, then swap the chain to Sram or KMC and it would work just fine with the rest of the drivetrain. Is that correct? Thanks in instance for your answer.
Hi, I love your video. I have a quiestion, Can I used the same chain? Where I live there are very few hills and I want to get more speed. I have a SRAM (1 x 12) 11-50 38t chainring. I would like to get a 40t or 42t chainring. Would I need a longer chain? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have never used the 50( just not hilly enough) I was thinking maybe a 46t but that might be to big. Thanks
Started my Shimano 12sp endeavours with a ROTOR crank oval chainring, and the chain would grind, because of the protruding links. I contacted ROTOR for a solution, and all they said was, ‘run a kmc quick link’ they even made a video about it…..🤷♂️ I ended up grinding all the wide teeth to fit the chain 👌
I have SRAM GX AXS, GX 10-52 cassette, XT cranks with the absolute black oval chain ring. The chain is SRAM 12 speed, the nice rainbow one. I didn't plan it this way, it's just the parts I ended up with. I tried to change to the Oneup oval chainring, but my chainring bolts are on too tight. Couldn't get them off. So I've kept the absolute black chainring in. After some maintenance the other day, I went for is test ride and noticed some creaking under power. Changed to chain and it went away. I hope I am not destroying the chains some how. Seems to work fine with no extra resistance though.
Currently have Raceface Next R cranks, so opted for OneUp components switch oval 30t chainring (pretty easy to install, haven't had to replace yet) - paired with ethirteen Helix 12 speed cassette (the smaller cluster with higher gears needs replacing, installed same time as chainring) and Sram GX deraileur. Been using sram NX chains, and stay on top of swapping chains for most part. Love learning about bike tech stuff, but sometimes this stuff goes over my head, probably cause what i have works great. Thanks for sharing!
II just had the chance to pick up the Garbaruk chainring for 5 bucks (!) and now I want to build a drivetrain around it. On the chainring it say 12s, however I learned it should work with 10s as well. So I have a Deore 1x10 in mind. 40 in the front, 11-42 in the rear. Its not a MTB, rather a flatbar gravel or commuter.
Good to know, @@LoveMTB . The other option would be a SRAM 1x11, also with a 11-42 cassette that comes with a SRAM PC 1130 chain. Any suggestions what solution to prefer?
Great video as always. Have you used any other 12speed chains kmc etc. I’m behind still on 11speed and only use kmc chains at the minute found them to last longer on my setup
I use only KMC 12 speed chains with my SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain and they work perfectly. I just bought a KMC XO1 grade chain but I haven’t used it yet… nothing wrong with my regular grade chains. Like SRAM, KMC is manufactured in Taiwan. This for me is a positive.
PS, if I had a fully functioning 11 speed system I would not be looking to switch to 12. Even with steep terrain where I struggle not to loop out, I seldom use my 52 tooth cog.
Im not sure if this video will solve the exact Problem I have as I am Planning on using an X sync Chainring with a Shimano 12spd Setup, but it was helpful nonetheless. This video is Just amazing. This will just remove so many headscratches. Thank you :)
#4 SRAM chainring with Shimano 12sp chain. No-go. I had excessive chain wear and really bad chain suck. I have deep gouges on my chainstay because of it. Changing to a Shimano 12sp specific ring fixed my issues.
There’s one guy on RUclips who’s taking the fixing bolts from XX1 to install onto the GX RD to improve tight tolerances between the RD and hanger. I’m not sure if this would benefit AXS since the GX AXS RD fixing bolts are almost identical to the ones on XX1 AXS.
Hi, greetings from Peru. I have a trail bike a bought second hand and it has the SRAM GX 2018 1x12. The previous owner did not care about the maintenance and everything looks pretty bad. I will change it to a Deore CS-6100 Cassette with an SLX 12v derailleur and change the chainring, is it ok to buy another Sram Chainring or use a third party? Also, should I use Shimano Chain or KMC Chain for more compatibility?
Good idea for the chance. DOn't waste the money on the SLX derailleur get the Deore, and definitely use a Shimano chain if you want to take advantage of their new tech. Chainring - get one compatible with Shimano HG+ for the Sram 3 bolt direct mount. Assume it is what yo have.
@@LoveMTB Oh yes, you got everything. I already have the SLX derailleur bc got it on sale same price as deore. So my best option is Deore Cassette, Shimano Chain and Chainring compatible with HG+ and direct mount. Do you recomend certain brands? Here in Peru most shops sell Raceface, Deckas and many other chinese brands.. 🤔
As per spec sheet, 2019 hornet is a nonboost with BSA73 BB shell that can fit 36T chainring. Now, my question is what kind of chainring is that, Is it a 6mm, 3mm or 0mm offset? because my GXP crankset 36T with 6mm offset has a 49mm chainline sometimes rubs the chainstay. Please help me, this really bugging me. Thanks.
I had to add 1 more 2.5mm spacer to the drive side making the chainline almost 52mm. To my surprise there's no back pedaling issue except ro the 11th biggest cog. I guess I have to tune the RD and Shifter. My question, is it OK for my bike to change from 6mm offset into 3mm offset? Thanks.
Right now i'm in dilema. I upgraded Back wheel to DT Swiss boost 148 with shimano SLX kasette and SLX dereileur and SLX Chain. The chainring on the front seems to be SRAM, but i don't know which one. Should i just buy SRAM X-Sync 2 chainring or just go to Shimano M7100 Crankset.
I have a complete 12-speed slx drivetrain (microspline) on my mtb and I don't like the way the chain sits on my cassette, like this 1:49. It makes noise sometimes and i can tell it's coming from the chain not sitting snug on the cassette. Please which mtb 12-speed cassette (microspline) can i get that will allow my slx chain to sit better? I am willing to go with an 11-speed cassette if that would fit my drivetrain, as i've noticed those 11-speed cassettes fit their chains snug.
ok, how about this. I have Shimano set up, but I want to run a SRAM eagle 12s cass with AXS is there a shimano adapter for 110 BCD 4 bolt to Sram 12s chainring? I know SRAM has one that converts to Shimano. having to buy a new BB, chainrings or FIND ONE!!! etc etc rn are just a bit tasky Id rather have a remedy for the time being.
Tried Shimano Chains before on SRAM GX chainring and was noisy. Settled back to GX chains and problem solved. Now using Shimano chains, SLX chainrings on SRAM NX cassette and no noise and can shift fine.

I have replaced the chain of a Sram Eagle 12 speed OEM, to a KMC compatible 12 speed chain, cut to the same lenght and it never seems to shift properly. I then bought a Sram 12 speed chain for the Eagle 12 speed and no issues. My question is: do I have to use a Sram Eagle chain for the Sram Eagle 12 set? I did this to, two other bikes and same thing. Once I got the Sram Eagle chains for both, never had issues.!??
First oval chainring I rode was the Wolftooth, worked good (or so that I tough) but had problem getting a perfect shifting on a Sram drivetrain. Switched for an oval from Sram...wow, the difference is huge versus the Wolftooth. Shifting is now perfect, no chain skip at all. Third parties are not always the best option even if it's sometimes cheaper
@@davidsuzukiispolpot The X-Sync 2 narrow wide technology is far superior versus the Wolftooth one. Even with a perfectly adjusted derailleur and B screw, something the shifting would just happens because the chain wouldn't engage. Not happening with the Sram one

@@LoveMTB KMC X-12 is definitely NOT compatible with SRAM Eagle SX chainring, space is too narrow in the chain for the teeth of the chainring, constant resistance with every pedal stroke, backpedaling on larger sprockets results in chain drop to lower rings.

Probably the only downside of this setup is that I can't use dropper post lever as there's no room in the cockpit for it. I have to use one that is next to the brake/shift levers.

I thought sra-mano was some kind of Arbic bicycle brand before read the rest words.

You’re welcome. And I would also use the GX chain🤓
LOL, now you post this just as I ordered an absoluteblack oval 32T for the spring when I'm replacing my chain on my Shimano crank. All great info.
I was just thinking if i could mix it but you have this video! Thanks a lot!

I can confirm Sram chainring (34T X-Sync 2 eagle) works great with Shimano M6100 chain, shifter, M7100 cassette and hub. I used Sram eagle power lock and it shifts so smooth and so quiet that I still can't believe how well it worked out. Even the chainline turned out ok with the old Shimano Deore M590 crankset.
I would highly recommend converting your bike to 1x12! it's not as hard and not as expensive as the 3x6 fanboys would make you believe 😋
PS 10-51T range blew my mind 🤩

Another informative video as always thx. Your videos are the go to when building a new bike or just problems with an older one. Take care

Absolute Black Oval 32 on XT 12 speed Drive train, tried KMC made noise, got the Shimano XTR Chain, nice and quiet.
My Trance X2 Mullet setup --- SLX 7100 crankset with 30T driving my new Rear 12x148 boost XD Hydra + X01 B1 10-52T cassette and GX 520% RD = super smooth (no difference in X01 rd; 1/2 price) ---- even with my KMC X12 silver chain and SLX shifter (X01 so stiff/too large?)
Waiting on new copper E*Thirteen Helix R (12S 9-59T 2 piece ) cassette to test out --- We'll see - Paid $280 instead of X01 $433! Ouch. Concerned the also ordered to test XX1 copper chain works well with my SLX chainring???? The KMC X12 is still solid and smooth. So Fun.

Garbaruk is my 12s option, cassette and chainring. Nice videos !!

Excellent video. Thanks heaps! Just answered all my questions. Currently running older 11spd GX drivetrain which is at its end. Will be replacing with shimano slx 12spd but keeping sram crank (with new chain ring). Relieved that it will be compatible. Will replace with shimano crank at later stage. Thanks again
Did it work?
good day sir love your videos!! question, 12sp gx eagle cassette, shimano crank and chainring , what’s the best suited chain for these components?
@@LoveMTB will do, oh it’s axs too how good!
Can they make it more complicated?
At least this show help good bike shops stay in business because they might know this.
Great video!!!!!
I’m using the Wolftooth CAMO system on SX cranks. It seemed like a good idea, could get a Shimano compatible chainring that fits the system in the future but I probably won’t.
NIce video. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Got a 2022 fuel ex 7 NX! Im converting to shimano, i got slx cassette, xt long cage derailer , xt shifter, xt chain, 12 speed, NX crank wt absolute oval the XT chain gets stuck so i go back to my short, double link GX chain to lengthen it! My question is should i buy shimano crank 170 ? What model? There’s like 3 for SLX and do i need a new bottom bracket pressfit? Or the sram works? Thank u in advance ! Been watching you’re video!
