Sting's original seems a pedestrian love song to me. In this one, the singer counts off all his disillusionments, all the things that have failed him, things he can't believe in anymore. And then, the music gets triumphant at the end, repeating "If I ever lose my faith in you"...as people look at themselves in the mirror. Disturbed transformed this lightweight pop song into an anthem of believing in yourself. Maybe you need to watch the video to get that...I'm not sure the arrangement alone makes it clear. But I find this version of the song ultimately uplifting despite all the disillusionment.
Disturbed is one of my favorite hard rock bands! David is a such a good singer, and their covers are great! This song is so powerful.....definitely hit home with this one..
This song is soooo beautiful. The recording with Sting is great. I didn´t expect this version to be special, but they´ve really done a great job, respecting the beautiful harmony and powerful drive.
just have to say i’m addicted to your reactions and videos! yes ! . i’m a disturbed and tool lover , but i also love listening to classical and “edm” in between. . makes me appreciate their songs even more !
@Doug Helvering, I love watching you discover one of my all time favorite bands! Keep it up! "THE LIGHT" should be next on your list sir! Disturbed as a whole are some of the best hard rock musicians! I play the piano and flute myself, I'm also an alto singer and thoroughly enjoy your reactions! Rock on! 🤘🥰
Talking about The Police brings to mind their great song Synchronicity II. From the great musicianship to the fascinating concept found in the lyrics, this would be a great reaction video!
For me, that song will forever be tied to the video made for it. Listening to the song always calls up that video in my mind. It's my favorite Police song.
Been a fan of Disturbed since the 90s. David's singing prowess is nothing new. but always excites. I think the best thing about this cover to me is that the Sting version was more of a personal thing with his lover. This one is somehow a bit more. Like about losing faith in humanity.
Doug - I really enjoy your perspective on modern "punk/rap/alt rock/ who-cares-what-it -is-called" music. I love your interactive (almost ... bordering on intrusive) approach to analyzing the music!!! Please keep injecting your higher-level, intellectual comments. I love how you can discern "everything" about the Disturbed take on a 90's pop song. Time changes us all and changes our view of music. Sorry, Mr. Classical Music guy ... YOU ROCK! Keep doing your thing -- we love it!
Already Gone is not a cover, this is not the Eagle's song. Their covers are I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (originally by U2), Fade To Black (originally by Metallica), Living After Midnight (Judas Priest, 1980), Midlife Crisis (originally by Faith No More), Shout 2000 (originally by Tears For Fears), If I Ever Lose My Faith In You (originally by Sting), Land Of Confusion (originally by Genesis), and The Sound Of Silence (originally by Simon & Garfunkel)

Great review and love that you revisited Disturbed! My request is for Vanden Plas / In My Universe - great german prog band, really good vocals and interesting progressions.
Thanks. Enjoyed this one, too! I also love Sting's music. I actually enjoy his solo stuff more than a lot of the Police songs I grew up with. I'd like to see you react to / breakdown some more of his work! Thanks again. tavi.
The lyrics and the vitriol in which they are shared perfectly sum up the loss of faith in our society and all the government trappings, science, that go along with it.
Congrats on the new place! Doug, As a classical composer you owe it to yourself and to your listeners to listen to a classical album by the band Camel "The Snow Goose" from 1975 and re-recorded in 2013 no vocals and it's one long song!
They've covered Genesis; Land Of Confusion, Tears For Fears; Shout, U2; I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Faith No More; Midlife Crisis, Metallica; Fade To Black, Judas Priest; Living After Midnight Some suggestions if curious on how the song compares to the original
I really enjoy your analysis of great music...I would love to hear your impressions of some King Crimson. Maybe Starless or Three of a Perfect Pair. Cheers!
Thanks to Disturbed you could do this reaction in a church. Because Sting's original starts with the Tritone which was banned by the pope. Well, I did not feel very comfortable with the original. The Disturbed version has much more power which gives the song more meaning. Thank you for the video.

Marty Friedman - Undertow (one of his most mellow tune ever). I'd like to see you reacting and analyzing some of Marty's chord progressions, especially since they are influenced by japanese traditional music.
I will 100% always be stunned you can just "boop-boww!" a chord that's perfect. I know you're way way way more talented than any of my music teachers ever, but still. "Boop-boww" and it's perfect. Good thoughts, good wishes, hugs and love and all that to you! :D
Would love to see a Wintersun (Sons of Winter and Stars) reaction! Or Galneryus (Angel of Salvation. Full song). Also Ne Obliviscaris (song: And Plague Flowers) too!
hey doug greetings from Chile. I love your reacts, because more than a reacts, it is a complete analysis ofwhat you are listening to. I think will be interesting if you make an analysis reaction from a legendary band like PINK FLOYD with the Song SHEEP it probably doesn't have much technique, but I think it would be interesting to analyze the melodies. Thank you!
have you heard the song by sting "what could have been". its from a animated show on netflix and thats from a video game so it doesnt get much love from the "normal" music community. to me it should have been on all the award shows but we all know they are about 50 years behind the times.
Mine would be Genesis / Phil Collins. Huge fan back in the 80's. Hard to sing to? Try Judas Priest's "Pain Killer" or Steel Hearts "I'll never let you go" lol

Hi Doug, I love your channel and the tracks you choose to react to! If you are a taking suggestions I would be very excited and intrigued to see you react to Nero - Satisfy, it's something a little different from your usual track choices but I think it's one that you would enjoy and I'd be interested to see what you make of it! I actually am using the same headphones as you and the track sounds incredible through them! 😁 Also whether it be in your own time or here on the channel you should check out the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra if you haven't experienced them already! Their tracks with Magnetic Man are some of my favourites! Namely, Magnetic Man ft Emeli Sande - I need air, and Magnet Man ft Katy B - Perfect Stranger. Both tracks are performed live with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
Can you do a video one day explaining all the musical terms you use. Lot of the time you go technical it goes over my head and I don't know what you are talking about. Would love to know.
Are there any plans to expand the scope of the music you analyse, Doug? I mean, besides Opeth, Jinjer and Epica, there are way less-known bands whose music happens to be tagged as extreme metal that have been scarcely addressed at all despite their music sets them apart musically, to the point of being unique. I brought this up a couple of times before, but there is quality music outside the pure prog tag: Ne Obliviscaris, Persefone, Therion, Quo Vadis, Draconian, Virgin Black, Stream Of Passion, Wilderun, Amorphis, Anathema, A (Anonymous Confederate Ensemble), Be'lakor, Insomnium, Into Eternity, Swallow The Sun, Moonspell, The Gathering, Haggard, Green Carnation, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Saturnus, Trees Of Eternity... and I could go on. The thing is I fear that this big chunk of music is going to be neglected (as it always has been/is), be it in favour of more mainstream music or the more typical prog music. I don't want to be a nuisance here from expecting something which actually isn't planned to happen.
Please do a King Diamond song or a mercyful fate one, will be amazing. Will be also nice if you get back to Ayreon, I remember you to be surprise by their creativity and fusion but you never get back to them. Thanks for all your amazing videos.
Doug, is there any reason why most (if not all) your reaction videos are to rock/metal songs? I'd love to see you break down and discuss some of the more complex pop songs from the 1970s and 80s - suggestion of the excellent but little known band Toy Matinee perhaps?
Day 20 of requesting a reaction video of The Flower Kings - Love Supreme (Studio) :) A very talented group of people. Daniel Gildenlöw on vocals here is also the vocalist of Pain of Salvation.
I think it's a mistake to inject power into this tune. We already have Nickelback, but I guess they didn't cover it. There's a much sweeter cover of this song by Laith Al-Deen you should check out. He's a German-speaking musician based in Europe, but he recorded this one in English. Far superior, IMO, to the way Disturbed does it. I don't have the ear or the theory knowledge to know for sure whether Laith changes keys on us from Sting's original, but it sounds like he quietly takes it down a peg and gives it a lovely soul-inflected vocal. I love this tune, too, and hate to see it butchered into distortion, but that's just my taste. I really like your commentary on popular music. It's thoughtful and stays away from the bombast that some other commentators (such as I) seem unable to resist.

They also do a great cover of 'Land of confusion' by Genesis 😍
Also, 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking For' by U2.
Really, all their covers are amazing.
And also "Midlife crisis" by Faith No More.
That's where he found out about this cover.

Disturber’s Land of Confusion cover and the Light.
