The following helps me remember about major, minor and diminished triad chords in root position. There are obviously two gaps involved, first gap is between leading note and middle note and the second gap is between middle note and top note. No matter what the key signature, a major chord has 4 half-steps for the first gap and 3 half-steps for the second gap. For minor chords, the first gap is 3 half-steps and the second one is 4 half-steps. For diminished chord, both gaps are 3 half-steps. You can start on any note on the keyboard and construct a major, minor, or diminished chord just by applying the appropriate gaps.

Thanks for posting this. A topic that was not brought up was, what is the point of a chord progression? I'm sure most watchers know, I just thought it was a little funny. Lol, great video! Appreciated learning the difference between 'substitution' chords and 'borrowed' chords.

@lessonsontheweb Hey there. Loving this vid thanks.
Have a question though. The vii of ii. Why in C is that C#? If ii here is Dm, isn't the 7 of Dm, C, rather than C#? Or is it rather the ii of vii? I.e. vii being bdim, and the ii of that being c#?

I have a problem following your fingers, I think that the non playing fingers get in the way on the camera, therefore U don’t know if you are playing a triad or a minor.

Thanks! I agree, I went a little further than my original notes and I didn't prepare to explain those parts. Glad you enjoyed it though.

Hi Tim. Firstly, thank you so much for the lesson. For the first time in life and somewhat 20+ years after the school im actually enjoying theory. Secondly, how come you secondary diminished is vii˚/ii and also C#˚? D minor has Bb. Or is it supposed to be harmonic Minor with both Bb and C#?

As far as mixing chords/melody/etc. A good way to learn this is how to use fake books.
