Oooh, this is a tough one. I'm a die hard Supraphonic guy but fell in love with the original Gretch Copper shell, but the cost was out of the question. The Ludwig copper seemed like a dream come true. But now I'm not so sure. The copper is a bit "fuller and drier" but the Chrome is a bit snappier. I'd be curious how they compare recorded. At any rate, there doesn't seem to be that much of difference to justify the additional $300 in price.
@@NickCostaMusic I think the fuller /dry sound has a nice character and I imagine it'd be more appealing when playing solo, and it might even record nicely (depending on the music) but in general, a good snappy snare always works, and tends to cut through the band live. I also play bass and there's something about the timbre of a Supraphonic that slices through the bass register that I prefer.

I truly appreciate the comparisons with the copperphonic. I ran two fibreskyn heads on my raw 6.5 copper to experiment. The fiberskyn seemed have had a shorter life at med-high tensions. I don’t consider myself a hard hitter. The copper came with a heavy Ludwig head. I love ambassador heads & the ambassador x is perfect on my copper. Thank you Nick. I had a fiberskyn on my solid shell padauk for brush work, but after switching to an ambassador x, the drum went from dry and really boxy sounding to really waking up. I love the ambassador x since it's pretty close to the sound of an ambassador, but more durable. As for playing, no song or click - I hit the drum a few times to hear the tuning, then play what comes to mind!
Loved them both and the copper is definitely drier. I personally prefer the vintage Supra but both are really great drums. I have a ‘64 Supra which is one of my favorites. These drums seem to shine at mid to high tunings.

All valid points, and I agree 100%. Would you prefer the snap or a fuller/drier snare sound?

Totally agree! There's a reason the Supra is the most recorded snare drum of all time.

I enjoyed the Supra phonic more than the copper phonic in this comparison. I have a 67 supra, but I have not tried it with an ambassador X yet.
