I have a further interpretation based on the verses you essentially did not comment on: "Find me and I'm gonna live with you" & "Find me and I'm gonna bleed with you" These lines immediately precede "Bring the pain on" so they give us a clue about their pain. Add to this Jin's reference to the "beautiful prison" of fame that as you mentioned is referenced in Black Swan and Shadow. "Carried myself into this beautiful prison Find me and I'm gonna live with ya" Plus the meaning of the song "Louder Than Bombs" of BTS choosing to use their fame as a voice for those who are suffering, which is the track immediately preceding "ON" = To me, this song is about what you described, but deeper. Ultimately it is about BTS deciding to accept themselves AND their hardships ***for the good of others*** which is the message that naturally grows out of the place of self-love: self-giving love for others
Agreed :) I think most of us already know that everything BTS does has a deep meaning and they are selfless even though they themselves may be in pain. And we should never forget that. I actually think the dancers represent more Army. They might be part of the shadow, too, but also have always been there to protect bts while they grew. Furthermore you can recognise bits of other songs like blood, sweat and tears, dionysus, chicken noodle soop, singularity, not today, aso by lyrics, dance moves and musical beats. While every of this songs has flown by itself, they have now become one like BTS. That might also be the reason why Jungkook has such an intense part, as he once said he feels like the manifestation of all the other hyungs. In my opinion the shadow and innosence are represented in their black and white (and gray) cloth and hair colours.
The dancers always represented shadows in all the videos, imo. They just usually were hooded (buried) and now they are all out in the open and BTS even play around with them, now they are even contributing, playing drums and dancing. They only used to chase them before. Just my oppinion.

I don't like changes. I'm not consider a risky person so I must confess that every time that BTS has a comeback I not always like their songs right away but they always achieve growing in me after the second or third time. I can't explain how but I not complaining 💜
To be honest, every song that BTS released before ( even BLACK SWAN and ON ) looked to me so good, but solos of this album first looked to me not so passionate - like BTS has changed! This song and message touches so close to home. In the struggling of growing up and finding tribulations in our lives, I’ve been faced with the mindset of not wanting more pain, that because there was more pain ahead, I didn’t want to live anymore. And I rejected my past self and rejected my shadow. But then I understood that my shadow and my past are all myself and that I don’t have to reject them and can accept them and use them to grow. And then I learned that life is inevitably pain and suffering, but once you know that and once you know and trust yourself, you keep going and keep fighting, because it will no longer be able to tear you apart. I love this era so much because before we got the message to love ourselves and now they’re telling us to know, accept and trust ourselves.

V's neck tattoo is connected to the cracked mask of Jin's bs&t. It's kinda like his persona is cracked and shadow (the unconscious / unrealised part that has been repressed ) is finally seeking self- acceptance by merging or being whole.
That sounds possible and you might be right about this :) The masks they wore to hide their true nature connects to them facing the shadows head-on instead of hiding from them since the shadows are a part of their soul. Not hiding behind a mask anymore. In Fake Love, Singularity, The Truth Untold, BS&T, (and maybe some other songs too) they have a fear of the temptations/shadows. They could probably have used the masks to hide the pain and fears from themselves; that they couldn't deal with back then.
Awakening Decadence I suppose you are right since this track is powerful and the lyrics "Bring the pain on" means that they are now ready to face the pain- most likely the inner pain caused by shadows' fear and anxiety as well.
I'm not sure if they are repeating themselves because they can. It's more like we always deal with ups and downs in life, this is why it feels repetitive; a cycle. But there are changes too, even little changes; like the ones in the songs on this album. They just have a way with words. BTS like talking about ironies, it's poetic but also true :)

People are just always expecting that BTS has reached their peak and cannot keep up to it the next time, as that is the normal success curve of a musican. ..but with BTS, nothing is normal anymore. I am amazed by this video, is beyond of any expectation, I can't explain my self. I observed a thing, like RM said if you listen the whole album in order, is growing in you more and more. For sure is a master piece and I'm expenting that majority of fans will discover this. Is an emergency to understand the lyrics and the album flows smoothly. I don't say the other albums aren't good, all are good, i love them all so much, ut this is another level, so high that I don't know if any album exist. I mention Inner child of V, it is a mature song with a great texture, is beyond Kpop that I'm used, is a universal sound and his voice is amazing.I love the solo song, all of them.

It was a written manifesto for a band I created, original characters, and everything. (About not giving up, being brave, and being yourself. Also, I had a bird/wing theme going on; I just couldn't think of anything else at the time and I made up the names from a book about birds. A book I had in my room lol) This is ironic because BTS is a band that talks about this in their music, especially in the new album. (Wings and birds; doves.) Well, BTS has shown their intentions are pure, sincere, and selfless; always trying to make others feel better. Also, accepting themselves as they are. This is a well thought out Manifesto. This album made me feel better and this song made me feel better :) I don’t know how to explain it. You're right it really sounded like a self-empowerment and encouraging song. A part of "Filter" made me remember something. Jimin singing “I can be your Genie. How about Aladdin?” or something like that. Was I hearing that correctly?? (Edit: Yes, I heard that correctly.) Something about Aladdin in “Filter” reminded me of a scene in that new Aladdin movie, when Ali “tried” to buy the princess’s love 😳 lol He was so bad at speaking to the princess; terrible (he really wasn’t trying to buy the princess, it just came out that way.) They explained in an interview yesterday that the song wasn't called ON from the beginning but they decided to call it ON because of N.O and because they wanted to make that connection to the past. Didn't sound like it had more connection than that.
naylonlove it does have more connection than that. In N.O mv they were sort of confined and here they are free ( performing under open sky and moving freely), so there is escapism from the bonds or confines of N.O mv. Also one thing that stood out was that in N.O mv they're being suppressed by people wearing white suits and BTS were in black and ON there is a mild reversal of that monochrome color theme, BTS is wearing white shirts and the background dancers are wearing black. I think it symbolises that those people who were trying to suppress them in N.O are now powerless and BTS are the ones doing ( moving ) according to their own will and choices. Not quite sure about that but that's what I thought, maybe I am wrong though!

My language get butchered all the time so this is refreshing! :-) PS: I think Big Hit used this specific phrase because it was often used by Mozart (the phrase is written on many of his music sheets) which was kind of a Suga of his time and used to get bored very easily and since he didn't like to write the "reprise" parts of a concerto over and over again, he was used to simply write "come prima", "like (written) before" :-)
The dance moves themselves are also telling the same story as before! Look closely, and you can see moves from every single one of their old videos incorporated into this dance. There are obvious ones like Suga's kick from IDOL and V's right hand turning his own head like in Singularity. There are a lot more call-backs in the dance. There are bits of movement from Boy With Love, Mic Drop, Fire, Save Me, Run, Not Today, Anpanman, Dionysus, Bapsae, N.O, Go-Go, DNA, and many others, including things from iconic live performances. The woman front and center in the beginning is Sienna Lalau, a choreographer who BTS has worked with many times. She is 19 years old.

Can I add up? ^^ There is a saying, 'to go together through fire, water and trumpets' which means smth like 'to go to hell and back together preserving ties with someone (the members)'. Here this could also be a metaphor of the personal individuation process: the hero goes to hell and back and dies twice then being resurrected. I think the fire was in FIRE, the water was in Blood Sweat and Tears, and trumpets which also represent one's relationship with fame came in ON the most vividly. But all the three (fire, water, trumpets) came up in other songs, too. And all this also adds up with the words in ON that BTS are in heaven now. And I also liked how this film says only the sky is the limit (meaning there are no limits and the cage is what you perceive it = there actually is no cage,). There is also the Dalai Lama's saying that pain in your life is inevitable but it's you who choose whether to suffer. This is deep like that blue sky.

I wonder if they will use it at the end of their concerts, it's a bit like Mikrokosmos. On Taehyung's cheek it says: "THE SHADOW LIKE ME" in capital letters; as in this is the shadow or he is the shadow of himself.
That's an interesting saying. Kind of reminded me of the fall of the angels painting, that's also referenced in Blood, Sweat & Tears. What about 'birds of a feather flock together?' When applied to people, this means that people who are similar to each other or share similar interests tend to spend time with each other. They're always talking about flying; going to newer heights with their music and wanting to do that together. I mean them being swans and all of that too. Also, when birds flock together, it enables them to fly further using less energy because when the strong leader/bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the birds behind - each bird (except the leader) is flying in the air from the wing of the bird in front. This enables the flock to use less energy and reduces fatigue.
First, I have to say this whole album is amazing 😯🤭🥺 My first listen last night and I already love it. I had a feeling it wouldn't be fortissimo(loud), annoyingly repetitive or overly aggressive. I was a little surprised by the album because most of the songs sound so soft and matured (musically); they've found a balance between Western and Korean sound. Feels like each one of them are introverted in some way; showing their true selves and there's this delicate feeling to most of the songs in the album. It doesn't sound too aggressive; it sounds like they have accepted all the pain/struggles and have accepted it and are taking it with them. “It’s because of the fans that we are able to accept who we are, carry all we have and move forward." This is what Jimin said. I love these parts in the song "Can’t hold me down cause you know I’m a fighter" and "Bring it, bring the pain" stood out to me when I first listened to this. It sounds like something Sia would write/sing about too. When looking at the song BTS thought of Sia. There's something about the beat and sound in the background, it's an interesting sound. Also, Sia is in the chorus of the audio version feat. her from 1:15 to 1:31 and near the ending too. It feels like she had hand in helping write it or helping with the melody or something too. This mv reminded me of a bit of “Not Today” with the band and dancers in black. "I can't understand what people are saying, who and what do I need to follow?" "I fly together with that black wind" "Throw myself whole into both worlds" "Gotta go insane to stay sane." All of these parts in the lyrics really stood out to me. "Throw myself whole into both worlds" sounds like they are talking about the light and shadow but also the inner and outer part of their souls. I love Jungkook's parts at 2:57 to 3:25 in the mv, his voice sounds so beautiful here (the reverb of his voice, just wow). I also love Hoseok's parts; sound so smooth. I would love to see an analysis on Louder than Bombs, 00:00 (Zero O’Clock), Inner Child, Friends, Moon and We are Bulletproof: Eternal. 00:00 (Zero O’Clock) reminded me of Jungkook's Decalcomania and Jamais Vu; like a bit of the melody around the beginning of 00:00 (Zero O’Clock). I don't know why it reminded me of that, probably because it's connected to Map of the Soul: Persona.

I agree with most of this theory but I disagree with who the backup dancers and drum line are. I don’t see them as the shadow. I see them as BTS ARMY, backing BTS up, always there to provide help and security for the boys.
Honestly the album didn't blew me away compared to their previous body of work BUT I do know why the album is such because they're aiming for radio airplay, western mainstream. They are making drastic changes to see what they can aim for while being at the top of the game. And yes I'm a vet BTS army and I'm proud of them no matter what. It's a let down they had to combine ego and shadow together because of military enlistment.
I don't know why but listening to it, the whole album, gave me a strange feeling as though they were saying bye but a happyish one. A farwell that contained strong messages that were necessary for us to understand. I thought it to be weird but it might have been a bit true because of the whole military ordeal. That's how I felt about the album, happy but sad.

Also I don't know if anyone noticed but the ON video has military movement on it and it sounds like a war song, so yes foreshadowing military enlistment. Also in the album subunits were made, foreshadowing the future of the rest of the members while the older ones go to military? This is one of the reasons why the album is 50/50 for me. It gives me a sense of feeling of happiness yet not really.

The masks they wore to hide their true nature connects to them facing the shadows head-on instead of hiding from them since the shadows are a part of their soul. Not hiding behind a mask anymore. In Fake Love, Singularity, The Truth Untold, BS&T, (and maybe some other songs too) they have a fear of the temptations/shadows. They could probably have used the masks to hide the pain and fears from themselves; that they couldn't deal with back then.
Awakening Decadence I suppose you are right since this track is powerful and the lyrics "Bring the pain on" means that they are now ready to face the pain- most likely the inner pain caused by shadows' fear and anxiety as well.

I'm not sure if they are repeating themselves because they can. It's more like we always deal with ups and downs in life, this is why it feels repetitive; a cycle. But there are changes too, even little changes; like the ones in the songs on this album. They just have a way with words. BTS like talking about ironies, it's poetic but also true :)

People are just always expecting that BTS has reached their peak and cannot keep up to it the next time, as that is the normal success curve of a musican. ..but with BTS, nothing is normal anymore. They did it again.

I am amazed by this video, is beyond of any expectation, I can't explain my self. I observed a thing, like RM said if you listen the whole album in order, is growing in you more and more. For sure is a master piece and I'm expenting that majority of fans will discover this. Is an emergency to understand the lyrics and the album flows smoothly. I don't say the other albums aren't good, all are good, i love them all so much, ut this is another level, so high that I don't know if any album exist. I mention Inner child of V, it is a mature song with a great texture, is beyond Kpop that I'm used, is a universal sound and his voice is amazing.I love the solo song, all of them.

I think it could be a brilliant typography & design choice meant to visually show that the “on” is on top of a surface, indicating that they are On, they are in control now, they are on top/at the top/ of their shadows rather than the other way around.

I’ve written one before, for a class back in college. It was a written manifesto for a band I created, original characters, and everything. (About not giving up, being brave, and being yourself. Also, I had a bird/wing theme going on; I just couldn't think of anything else at the time and I made up the names from a book about birds. A book I had in my room lol) This is ironic because BTS is a band that talks about this in their music, especially in the new album. (Wings and birds; doves.)
Well, BTS has shown their intentions are pure, sincere, and selfless; always trying to make others feel better. Also, accepting themselves as they are. This is a well thought out Manifesto. This album made me feel better and this song made me feel better :) I don’t know how to explain it. You're right it really sounded like a self-empowerment and encouraging song. The crew and the Drum and Bugle Corps are amazing too.
@Bookish Theories I don’t know if you’ll do an analysis on "Filter," but I just wanted to say this before I forget it. A part of "Filter" made me remember something. Jimin singing “I can be your Genie. How about Aladdin?” or something like that. Was I hearing that correctly?? (Edit: Yes, I heard that correctly.)
Something about Aladdin in “Filter” reminded me of a scene in that new Aladdin movie, when Ali “tried” to buy the princess’s love 😳 lol He was so bad at speaking to the princess; terrible (he really wasn’t trying to buy the princess, it just came out that way.) It was so embarrassing to watch that. He had many jams; many different kinds. When I watched the movie my thought was Namjoon saying Jimin has no jams 😅 If anyone's seen the movie you know what I’m talking about. I couldn’t stop laughing 😂 🤭
Edit: Also, now that I read the lyrics for the “Filter” track. The lyrics “I will take you to a whole new world.” make sense with the lyrics “I can be your Genie. How about Aladdin?” lol
Because Aladdin did play a fake prince in the movie it's like he filtered himself to be someone he's not. When he is just a poor boy from town. A boy who has nothing but still cares about others. No one sees his humanity. People only see what he looks like on the outside. People see him the way they want to see him. But no one sees the real him. Just like people do with Jimin, do they see the real him or just his duality and stage persona.

They explained in an interview yesterday that the song wasn't called ON from the beginning but they decided to call it ON because of N.O and because they wanted to make that connection to the past. Didn't sound like it had more connection than that.

In N.O mv they were sort of confined and here they are free ( performing under open sky and moving freely), so there is escapism from the bonds or confines of N.O mv. Also one thing that stood out was that in N.O mv they're being suppressed by people wearing white suits and BTS were in black and ON there is a mild reversal of that monochrome color theme, BTS is wearing white shirts and the background dancers are wearing black. I think it symbolises that those people who were trying to suppress them in N.O are now powerless and BTS are the ones doing ( moving ) according to their own will and choices. Not quite sure about that but that's what I thought, maybe I am wrong though!

PS: I think Big Hit used this specific phrase because it was often used by Mozart (the phrase is written on many of his music sheets) which was kind of a Suga of his time and used to get bored very easily and since he didn't like to write the "reprise" parts of a concerto over and over again, he was used to simply write "come prima", "like (written) before" :-)
The dance moves themselves are also telling the same story as before! Look closely, and you can see moves from every single one of their old videos incorporated into this dance. There are obvious ones like Suga's kick from IDOL and V's right hand turning his own head like in Singularity. There are a lot more call-backs in the dance. There are bits of movement from Boy With Love, Mic Drop, Fire, Save Me, Run, Not Today, Anpanman, Dionysus, Bapsae, N.O, Go-Go, DNA, and many others, including things from iconic live performances. The woman front and center in the beginning is Sienna Lalau, a choreographer who BTS has worked with many times. She is 19 years old.
I noticed all that movement too with the choreography in this song :) Combining a lot of their other choreographies and making it look new as well in this mv.

There is a saying, 'to go together through fire, water and trumpets' which means smth like 'to go to hell and back together preserving ties with someone (the members)'. Here this could also be a metaphor of the personal individuation process: the hero goes to hell and back and dies twice then being resurrected. I think the fire was in FIRE, the water was in Blood Sweat and Tears, and trumpets which also represent one's relationship with fame came in ON the most vividly. But all the three (fire, water, trumpets) came up in other songs, too. And all this also adds up with the words in ON that BTS are in heaven now. And I also liked how this film says only the sky is the limit (meaning there are no limits and the cage is what you perceive it = there actually is no cage,). There is also the Dalai Lama's saying that pain in your life is inevitable but it's you who choose whether to suffer. This is deep like that blue sky.

Also, I've realized that the line on Taehyung's cheek may literally say: 'Shadow, love me'.
@@olha1311 We are Bulletproof: the Eternal actually sounds ethereal with the softness of the melody and their voices. I wonder if they will use it at the end of their concerts, it's a bit like Mikrokosmos.
On Taehyung's cheek it says: "THE SHADOW LIKE ME" in capital letters; as in this is the shadow or he is the shadow of himself.
That's an interesting saying. Kind of reminded me of the fall of the angels painting, that's also referenced in Blood, Sweat & Tears. What about 'birds of a feather flock together?' When applied to people, this means that people who are similar to each other or share similar interests tend to spend time with each other. They're always talking about flying; going to newer heights with their music and wanting to do that together.
I mean them being swans and all of that too. Also, when birds flock together, it enables them to fly further using less energy because when the strong leader/bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the birds behind - each bird (except the leader) is flying in the air from the wing of the bird in front. This enables the flock to use less energy and reduces fatigue.
First, I have to say this whole album is amazing 😯🤭🥺 My first listen last night and I already love it. I had a feeling it wouldn't be fortissimo(loud), annoyingly repetitive or overly aggressive. I was a little surprised by the album because most of the songs sound so soft and matured (musically); they've found a balance between Western and Korean sound. Feels like each one of them are introverted in some way; showing their true selves and there's this delicate feeling to most of the songs in the album. It doesn't sound too aggressive; it sounds like they have accepted all the pain/struggles and have accepted it and are taking it with them. “It’s because of the fans that we are able to accept who we are, carry all we have and move forward." This is what Jimin said.
I love these parts in the song "Can’t hold me down cause you know I’m a fighter" and "Bring it, bring the pain" stood out to me when I first listened to this. It sounds like something Sia would write/sing about too. When looking at the song BTS thought of Sia. There's something about the beat and sound in the background, it's an interesting sound. Also, Sia is in the chorus of the audio version feat. her from 1:15 to 1:31 and near the ending too. It feels like she had hand in helping write it or helping with the melody or something too. This mv reminded me of a bit of “Not Today” with the band and dancers in black.
"I can't understand what people are saying, who and what do I need to follow?" "I fly together with that black wind" "Throw myself whole into both worlds" "Gotta go insane to stay sane." All of these parts in the lyrics really stood out to me. "Throw myself whole into both worlds" sounds like they are talking about the light and shadow but also the inner and outer part of their souls. I love Jungkook's parts at 2:57 to 3:25 in the mv, his voice sounds so beautiful here (the reverb of his voice, just wow). I also love Hoseok's parts; sound so smooth.
I would love to see an analysis on Louder than Bombs, 00:00 (Zero O’Clock), Inner Child, Friends, Moon and We are Bulletproof: Eternal. 00:00 (Zero O’Clock) reminded me of Jungkook's Decalcomania and Jamais Vu; like a bit of the melody around the beginning of 00:00 (Zero O’Clock). I don't know why it reminded me of that, probably because it's connected to Map of the Soul: Persona.

Honestly the album didn't blew me away compared to their previous body of work BUT I do know why the album is such because they're aiming for radio airplay, western mainstream. They are making drastic changes to see what they can aim for while being at the top of the game. And yes I'm a vet BTS army and I'm proud of them no matter what. It's a let down they had to combine ego and shadow together because of military enlistment.
I don't know why but listening to it, the whole album, gave me a strange feeling as though they were saying bye but a happyish one. A farwell that contained strong messages that were necessary for us to understand. I thought it to be weird but it might have been a bit true because of the whole military ordeal. That's how I felt about the album, happy but sad.
@@beckypaul603 correct. I felt that they were saying goodbye but it felt so abrupt. Also I don't know if anyone noticed but the ON video has military movement on it and it sounds like a war song, so yes foreshadowing military enlistment. Also in the album subunits were made, foreshadowing the future of the rest of the members while the older ones go to military? This is one of the reasons why the album is 50/50 for me. It gives me a sense of feeling of happiness yet not really.
