Maybe a new story for some, but for those involved in the water industry around Cle., OH this brilliant and selfless man has never been forgotten. Also has a large water works facility named after him. Thank you for getting this important history to many more people.
Great story!!! My grandfather was the last living survivor of that disaster. He ended up with a broken back. Most of the worker were poor Irish immigrants. When he got older, he had terrible nightmares. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Cleveland’s new fireboat, Marine 21, was christened as the Garret A. Morgan. It was delivered earlier this year, and was only recently placed in service. It replaced the old fireboat, the Anthony J. Celebrezze, which was built in 1961 and which fought several of the fires that burned the Cuyahoga River back in the day.
as the Randy Newman lyric said of the Cayuhoga ,,,, "The Lord can make you tumble, the Lord can make you turn, the Lord can make you overflow, But the Lord can't make it burn,"
As a young boy living in Newark, New Jersey’s north ward which at that time was mostly Italian/American and African/Americans my mother’s best friend was black and we where Italians and my parents taught me that color was only skin deep and what mattered the most what was in your heart and brain , I grew up realizing not just that but more importantly we are all of the human race, that you for this wonderful history lesson ! Keep this great work up !!
God bless you and your parents! My Daddy was 1/2 Greek (his Mom) & 1/2 Sicilian (his Dad) and I too was brought up to look at a person's character not the color of their skin. My husband Frank (whose acct I post on) was raised the same way, but I can tell you there are places in the south that the civil war is still going on! Patricia Gambino Harrington
This video is awesome. Format, layout, the story telling, all fantastic. Thank you for this and rest in peace to those who have tragically lost their lives due to poor safety procedures.
Yes, thank you for a very professional and informative video. Great information but so sad these men lost their lives. May they rest in eternal heaven 🙏🙏❤️
Great story, John. There have been a lot of African Americans that have had great inventions that don't get the full credit they deserve. Morgan was amazing.
I grew up in Pepper Pike east of Cleveland before I-271 and remember hearing this story in School actually it's was in highschool but don't recall the details of it all thanks for bringing back some memories of my youth and telling a wonderful story I've said before you are a very talented and gifted Man certainly do appreciate you telling the story keep up the great work you are doing and much success to you and your team Sir
Deep under Lake Erie Morton Salt mines salt ,thank goodness safety regulations are saving miners all over the U.S.today. Who knows what is under our homes and roads here in Ohio. Great historical video, Thanks!
Nearly 25 years in a Chemical Plant, I had the distinction of being an Instructor for 8 Years on aspects of Industrial Hygiene, my particular contribution (there were well over 1000 people, in groups of 30 or so - until everyone was through the course for the year, that attended mandatory Industrial Hygiene Training Each Year) was Air Purifying Respirators. Due to the Chemicals in the Plant, Jobs Done on Breathing Air (Supplied Air) and for Emergencies (SCBAs) were taught by others. Some chemical releases; where I worked, and at a number of other Facilities in the Country; are so deadly that a Totally Encapsulated "Level A" HazMat Suit is required, the SCBA is Sealed in the Suit with the Employee and the Suit must be Burped periodically to allow the air to escape. But the limitations on Air Purifying Respirators must be known, they don't supply Oxygen, they don't filter certain chemicals, the Atmosphere cannot be Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) except, I think, in Limited and very Specific Escape Only Respirators, the Maximum Use Concentration needs to be known and not exceeded, etc. Employees were required to wear a Gas Monitor that was used to Detect and Alarm on Specific Levels of Low Oxygen, or Above Certain Levels of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Carbon Monoxide, (CO) and Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), and Act Accordingly for the Conditions that cause the Monitor to Alarm. Employees were instructed to wear the Monitor at Breathing Level (often on the Shoulder) because Gas Stratifies and what is Safe Standing Up may not be Safe when Bending Over (for Example) or when working at Different Levels in a work area. The Monitors are Bump Tested Each Day before initial use, and Calibration Gas is used allowing the Alarm to Occur and the Bump Test Station to determine if the Gas Monitor is working correctly. I watched this episode with Great Interest, thanks for bringing it and so many other wonderful shows.
Just found this channel... can't believe I didn't know about it. Great storytelling & interesting subject matter... I'm definitely subscribing right now. 😊
In 1971 similar explosion happened in Lk Huron for the Detroit water tunnel. 21 dead after the blast. Another died later from his injuries. Tunnel was nearly 5 miles long. Same thing, they think natural gas collected at the lake end of tne tunnel where they were welding. At that end (lake end) all they heard was a little rush of air and heat. The tunnel acted like a rifle barrel and shot debris 5 miles away out the other end of the tunnel in Port Huron. I was a child then only 6 yrs old, but I remember eveyone talking about it for a long time. I lived in the next town and it seemed everyone knew someone who died in the tunnel. Years later I met a MI OSHA instructor/teacher for construction. He told us he was at the mouth of the tunnel and had just exited it turning up a slight incline to the right walking towards a construction trailer when the explosion occurred and blew him backwards 30 or more feet. He was uninjured, but men around him that were in the direct line of the blast were cut horribly by the flying shards of metal that were ejected by the blast. He was a trusted individual at the work site and was tasked with retrieving jewelery from the limbs of the men who perished for identification purposes. They were cut to pieces by sheet metal that turned to flying razor blades propelled by the blast. There is a history video on YT Port Huron tunnel expolsion.
Great story, something I never heard. Being from Medina, I love the stories that are close to home. Thank you. Your vlogs are always welcome and enjoyed. Again, thank you.
Thanks for this. I love trawling around for odd bits of history I've never heard of, and love even more when it turns out to be not just clickbait but an interesting and well-told story about a clearly fascinating character that I must find out more about. Also means I guess I'll be checking out more of your channel, thanks again.
Thanks for sharing this story with clarity and grace. As a Morgan descendent I think of the contributions of GA Morgan every day, and I'm inspired by his example.
What a great story. I love men and women like this - brave and ingenious, practical and humane. We need to hear of far more such people who serve humanity. Thank you.
My Dad was a Commercial Fisherman along the North Shore of Lake Erie. There was a Fishery almost every mile. Lamprey Eels and Gill Netters ruined that for the Fisheries.
So much history has been lost from generations before. We are sadly ignorant of the successes and failures of our forbearers and as a result, there is little gratefulness for the efforts of "common" ppl to reach beyond the confines of economic/racial/educational/gender status. Thanks for another excellent dose of reality!
. 06:50 I don't know what anyone else thinks, but the shot of the inventor caught in this newspaper photo, working at the accident site, should have won the photographer a Pulitzer. You don't often see pictures with this kind of impact from back then.
Always eager, curious and motivated to find your story, John! Great content! May the souls of those who lost their lives in that catastrophic gas leakage rest in peace! May Gracious God allow the warm bright sunshine to fall on the tablets of their graves and gentle murmuring breeze to sweep them always! The eternal blissful sleep! Is it a sacrifice performed by fate at the altar of the universe to add a milestone to the journey undertaken by humanity? Another remarkable invention for our safety! The safety for the future and beyond! Without them, we would not get a person like Morgan and his brilliance which is in service to humanity. May peace, love and cooperation prevail upon this planet Earth. With this, I end my pledge. Have a great day!

I agree Edward! Thanks for watching my friend!
There are many inventions that get wrongfully attributed to Blacks by folks with an agenda to push, it's very popular lately..
@ImaRandomFemale Except that he did not invent the gas mask. It was invented two years earlier in 1914.
This should be in a history book, what an interesting man/inventor.
Agreed
Thank you for this video. Learning about history that i've never heard about before is awesome.
R.I.P to all the victims. 🙏🏻

People like him should be the real heroes for our young people
Well said!
I agree - we all need worthwhile people to look up to and emulate.
My older daughter did a report on him a few years ago. I can't wait to show her this. She was so interested in him.

The brave men that produced the tunnels, I always thought about them when I drove the Detroit Windsor tunnel. .
You can see his name every time you go between downtown & points west along the Shoreway; the water works there is appropriately named for him.
Thank You , this is wonderful to know.❤
Very interesting and informative video. Thank you.
Subscribed! Thank you for telling the world about this. I didn't now. It's nice to know who the true inventors are of things.
