Back in 1989, I was confused at 1st and then thought it was some kind of cruel joke that the vs. mode looked better (more arcade-like) than the actual game/mission mode.
The Mode B graphics were originally intended for use in the main game, but Technos overestimated the NES' capabilities and tiny 2Kb screen memory. There's no way any more than two of those big sprites could be on screen at the same time, and you'd need at least two enemies to one Player to make the game playable as a scrolling beat 'em up. The graphics were hastily re-designed and shrunk down, and that's why the Billy sprite looks so rough and a bit rubbish.
@Skylone that's what I figured. It was funny, I was watching a completely unrelated video, falling asleep, and all of a sudden I had a vivid memory of Double Dragon mode B and had to look it up. While watching this, I was theorizing why this mode existed, and that's exactly what I thought - they initially intended the entire game to be like this, but upon development they realized it wouldn't work, but didn't want all of that work to go to waste so they put what they had into this great little fighting game mode. And at the time, this was one of the best "fighting games" you could play. It was actually pretty great, because you could play this mode against your friends. Every single one of these music tracks are permanently ingrained in my head.
The NES had an 8 sprite per scanline limitation too (8x8 sprites), and that's what caused flicker in some games. Those big Mode B characters are at least made up of 10-12 sprites, so the flicker would have been unbearable. As an extra feature, Mode B was very cool for the time. I always wanted to pit two different characters against each other though, but the nes didn't have enough RAM for that
the vs was a nice bonus since it didnt have 2 player co op. im still mad though. i didnt love the master system version but it was better than nothin back in the day. sigh.
If they put more effort on this one vs one mode The Nes versión definitevely was much better, what a strange decisión make only the subgame for one round fights with clone players and only a unique background.
I never did understand why every character was given a more detailed sprite in this mode EXCEPT Abobo.
Because Abobo is already perfected.
Probably technical and/or space limitations
This game was my childhood (one of many)!

What do you mean by “sprite”?
This was before Street Fighter. We had so much fun playing this with friends.
