4:45 it's interesting because the possible assault of a female character is so shocking that it glosses over the fact that this Male character was INDEED assaulted and possessed.....
Yeah, I was struggling to judge that in the moment. Ayase's assault gets much more screen time and suspense. Okarun meanwhile has his junk eaten off screen.
I binged what’s out so far after watching this and that shift in episode 7 caught me so off guard, I did not expect a show that seemed so light hearted and casual to hit me like that emotionally out of nowhere
I love when stories with absurd premises take themselves seriously. it literally doesn't matter how bonkers the setup is as long as you're willing to do the work and make a good story. one of my favorite books is Snowcrash by Neil Stevenson. the main character is named Hero Protagonist and he's a ninja pizza delivery boy & racecar driver who works for the mob and also he invented the internet, and he faces off against a man who drives a nuclear motorcycle, and he has to save the world from a magic ancient sumerian computer virus. this all makes perfect sense in context.
The themes i'm picking up so far is that of discovery and exploration. Ayase and Okarun are discovering the supernatural world they never saw, while discovering romance with eachother in highschool. It's not a conincidence that Okaruns junk is a source of spiritual power.
As someone who has read the manga I will say, while it never gets as deep as FMA (which, duh, nothing really does.) Dandadan does really try to tackle a lot of mature and interesting themes and while I won’t go into spoilers, there are plenty of characters who are just… very tragic by nature.
Savage, do you mind considering talking about the Smile franchise? I just watched the second one tonight and I love the use of the “fake smile” concept as a horror theme. Both movies make great use of keywords too. Both of the movies take every chance to blend the word “Smile” into the dialogue when possible
People can really handle gore in media better than SA in media and i have never understood it. Like in DDD it happens to both characters but people only talk about it happening to Momo. But most people have no problem with the deadpool movies or AoT.
@victordaniels600 I dont think it makes sense for people to be disturbed by intimate violence while not being disturbed by murder. There are tons of movies and shows where a character can kill a room full of bad guys and nobody bats an eye. But sexual assault always causes controversy. When you'd think mass murder would be worse.
@@rohkandagoat7679 I can understand how it can be seen as a double standard, I can only describe how it affects me particularly, but that wouldn’t be useful enough Is your preferred reaction to be that people shouldn’t be bothered to both being depicted in equal severity & frequency?
@victordaniels600 I dont have a problem with either being depicted as long as they're both treated with the same level of weight regardless of gender. Murder and SA should both always be seen as horrible things regardless of who/what's doing and who/what it's being done to. But that's just not the case sadly. Like the fact that we can make an entire comedy centered around mindless killing is crazy. But try to do that with mindless SA and it would not fly.
@@rohkandagoat7679 I’m not sure but it seems we share the same distaste for violence being taken lightly in media. I can also say that although I hate gore I can also fully watch it if it is taken seriously & handled competently I’m breaking my own rule of not talking about my own experience, but sexual violence is harder for me to handle because it’s like a violation that’s a degree higher & I worry that if it’s depicted more frequently then it’ll get into the sphere where it is taken lightly & desensitized like in Deadpool which I really hated for it’s comedic approach to dominating & abusing people’s bodies even if it’s not real But then again I’m open to not keeping people from depicting whatever they want to, but I don’t have to like it lol
Not gonna lie I did give the show a huge side eye after watching the first episode, but the second and third episode were already out and I didn't have anything else to do so I gave it a chance. I'm really glad I did honestly, it's such a good show so far!
As a manga reader (not caught up), episode 7 was executed beyond my expectations. I’ve been enjoying the show, but nothing until episode 7 connected with me quite as much from an adaptation standpoint. Superb shit.
On top of everything else, Dan da dan has easily one of the best romances in this type of manga / anime. It's just handled so mucn better than almost anything else in its class.
I’m super behind on my anime watching too. Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Vinland Saga have been my top three must watch anime for I don’t even know how many years now, but I just haven’t gotten around to them yet. Too much to watch, too much to read, too much to play, not enough time.
Dandadan rocks. The manga continues to pop off and the anime is incredible. It’s hilarious, visually impressive, the romance is surprisingly touching, and when it wants to hit you with emotional weight, it does a beautiful job. Episode 7 might just be my favorite episode of anime this year and that’s with stacked competition. Great shout out.
Sorry but I'm opting out of many shounen stories right now. Especially with how(pulls out list) many stories like jjk mha and another three letter anime ended in trash
Tbh RIGHT NOW, Dandadan does not seem to be heading in that direction. I say that because if you pay attention you can usually know if a shonen will end badly. For example in JJK, the bad ending that it had didn't come out of nowhere, there were sings since the Culling Games arc onwards. Piles of text, poor character interaction, focusing too much in the power systems, villains with lackluster or straight up non-existent motivations when throughout the whole manga it seemed like otherwise and information that plays a big role in the origins of the characters but it's completely left out like the heian era. Dandadan doesn't suffer of those problems (at least not yet), the only thing that can be criticized is the plot sometimes not moving forward but that's about it.
Mmm this one is actually as much of a rom-com as it is action-adventure, and knows when and where to get serious, and it can be quite wholesome too. I’ve been watching anime for about 15 years and I’d say its pretty unique overall. Cool things do happen but I wouldn’t call it an action manga that is all about fighting (it happens, but it isnt what its about)
I know I will probably not be liked for that take and I really love everything else about Dandadan, but, actually, I wouldn't say I liked how they handled the contrast between the weird high school shonen anime and the waaaay more serious stuff. It felt really cheap and mishandled to me. Like what is implied to have happened there (especially to the child) is just a lot, especially if you see the "monster" in the episode prior. Just throwing that stuff in there and then making a joke about golden balls is really distasteful to me. "Oh, that funny dick-eating turbo granny ghost? Yeah, she watches over the ghosts of young girls that have been raped and cut into pieces btw. Anyway...dick joke!!" I think Dandadan avoids many of the pitfalls of shonen anime, but the way this show handles these things feels like it wants to prove it is mature and can talk about that kind of stuff, when it really hasn't a lot to say about it. It just felt very emotionally manipulative to me. Don't get me wrong-visually, the whole scene was super impressive (like the rest of the show, honestly), and it is crazy how well they got that story across. But to me, it felt like an edgy Gamemaster in a TTRPG who will put all kinds of depravity into their campaign because "that's more realistic," with no other motivation to do so or a thing to add to it. I hope the show handles that better going forward.
It's fair, even though is not real is understandable that some people don't like at all depictions of messed up situation even if is done for the good of the plot and technically there's nothing wrong about using it like that (the situation to move the plot I mean).
No I mean I'm not gonna make a fuss about it, I get what it served to the narrative, I just don't care for general sexualization of young people in anime. It's a handful of isekai and relatively popular anime I can't fw because of that, but for the most case it's just on principal and less about how explicit the content is. Probably why I've only ever seen 20 or so anime all the way through since the 90s.
Not to mention the show falls into the trope of the male protagonist essentially getting assaulted and it was glossed over & trivialized I understand that people can tolerate really screwed up depictions of violence but what does it mean to be so desensitized
Weird doesn’t make me watch an anime, and neither is just the anecdote that “its good”. I had the same issue with Chainsaw Man until I watched it. People need to say what the show actually is about. Not the inciting incident because thats not the actual character conflict right? That kids vs ghosts and aliens is just the vehicle for some other character based conflict, that otherwise no one is able to say what? Until then I wouldn’t check it out, cause the last time hype was universal around a new anime I was mad disappointed. Especially when the anime gets weird, the rule of cool and good animation isn’t enough for me
i been on board with everything that I've watched from you, but I've never been more in disagreement about anything in my life than with this. I find the intro horrid, the premise of the show is grotesque to the point that it feels like a 12 year old masochist's wet dream and thus far completely unenjoyable. i stayed current on the show hoping for some redemption, but there just doesn't seem to be any. there are a few funny bits of decently written humor... but this show is bad.

Over the summer I finally watched Afro Samurai. Awesome characters, good music, and a cool techno-oriental world.
YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED GOING FORWARD IT ONLY GETS BETTER TRUST
That intro opening became my ringtone after watching the first episode
PLEASE talk about this with its utmost extent, this episode broke me 3 times in a row!!!!!
7:13 100%, its like Up’s opening by way of Satoshi Kon’s darkest work.

Turbo granny as the villain? Now she may be an “evil” yokai but I will not take this villain slander!
After Episode 7, this is now a story that I want to see reach its conclusion because DAMN
Every creepy nuts anime opening has been fantastic! Been really enjoying the show :)
When I read the manga of the episode I thought the exact same thing it was a short but super powerful vignette just like the first few minutes of UP.
